MISSION STATEMENT
Senior Center
The mission of the Faribault Area Senior Citizens, Inc. is to promote the physical, emotional,
intellectual, economic and social well-being of older adults and to promote their participation
in all aspects of community life in Faribault and the surrounding area.
Fashions on Central
The mission of Faribault Area Senior Center’s Fashions on Central is to provide essential
financial support for the Senior Center. In addition, the Fashions on Central provides
volunteer opportunities for its members, donates clothing through the voucher system and
is environmentally responsible in encouraging the reuse of serviceable items.

It was late in 2014 that a legal Development
Agreement was signed by the Senior Center
and the City of Faribault paving the way for
a building expansion of the FASC. Since
that time we have hired Crescendo Consulting, professional
fundraisers, to direct the capital campaign efforts. Throughout 2015 committees were formed and met regularly to create the materials necessary to start soliciting funds.
In November, 2015 the Celebrating Seniors Capital Campaign kicked off with 350 community members in attendance, raising $200,000 in just one event. By the end of the
year over $800,000 had been raised. Coming up next is the
hiring of contractors and finishing the fundraising. 2015 will
be known as one of the most important in the Senior Center’s history- just wait until next year!

Fashions on Central continues to be 
a major funding source for the Senior

Store manager Kathy Dodds took
retirement during 2015 after 5
years of employment.


We utilized many different types
of advertising in order to reach
our customer base. Those include: Daily News coupon book,
downtown event participation,
FCTV, newspaper articles and
Facebook.
In addition, we brought in outside
vendors to display their products
as a way to also entice shoppers
into our store.
The competition of numerous
thrift stores in Faribault caused a
dip in store sales, which was reflected in a decline of net income

SENIOR CENTER PROGRAMS
SENIOR DINING
We continue to offer a variety of programs designed to enhance the quality of life of our members
and the community at large. We offer health and wellness classes, opportunities to be creative, venues that
contribute to social connectedness, services that assist
with financial well-being, and presentations just for
the joy of learning. Member involvement continues
to be the driving force of our efforts and a program
committee gives guidance.
While Senior Dining strives to maintain its mission, “To
promote the independence, dignity, good health, and nutritional well-being of older persons”, my hope is that we are
serving those we are meant to serve, provide fellowship and
a welcoming site that everyone appreciates, and offer nutritionally balanced home-style meals so many enjoy.
Senior Dining also provides volunteer opportunities to
keep seniors active, connect them with others, and give
them a sense of value. The volunteers who give of their
time and talent in the dining program are not only vital to
the success of the program, but also very much appreciated.
Senior Dining cannot not say thank you enough for the
hours you give.
In 2015, choices ranged from a tour of Sage Glass
to painting on canvas, learning about Dietrich Bonhoeffer or bluebirds, or enhancing skills for falls prevention or safe medication use. We couldn’t do this
without the individuals and agencies who partner with
us. We also enhance our programming capacity by
hosting programs such as the evidenced-based series,
Living Well with Chronic Conditions, and more recently, Cannon Valley Elder Collegium (Northfield)
classes.

CAREGIVERS & COMMUNITY
The FASC has a long tradition of working with
Family Caregivers - those who provide help to an
older or disabled adult relative or friend. Along with
information & referral help and classes for family
caregivers, we maintain connections with professional care providers and facilitate classes to provide
those providers with continuing education credit.

SPECIAL EVENTS
In the community, we provide co-facilitation of a
family caregiver support group. A partnership with
the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP)
assists the local Senior Friendship Volunteer outreach with meeting space and in-kind support. And
staff serves on an Emergency Preparedness - Special
Needs work group as well as Faribault Public
Schools Continuing Education committee and the
RSVP advisory group in Rice County.
A special event is a one-time or occasional event provided
outside the usual programs and activities.

encompass a variety of delivery styles including presentations,
discussion groups, social activities, and private appointments and
cover needs and interests related to health and wellness, creative
expression, legal and financial issues, and life-long learning.
Group Activities
Presentations and Programs
Ask the Pharmacist meets monthly to discuss a
health topic. Open to public; no fee.
Coffee Chat is an informal discussion and questions
session that gives community members the opportunity to learn about various community programs and
services. No fee; open to the public.
Book Club meets monthly; variety of genres. Members only; no fee.
Connected 4 Learning is a live video conference
format that takes the participant to museums around
the country and even to other countries “Live from
the Ukraine”. Or the group reads a book and then
has opportunity to visit with the author. Fee for members and non-members.
Cards (500, Euchre, Pfeiffer) and Bridge meet on a
regular daily schedule. Members only; minimal
charge includes coffee and treat.
Card Making Class meets monthly. Learn how to
create special occasion or seasonal cards using
stamping, embossing, etc. Fee: $3.
Encore Academy provides speakers on a variety of
history and humanities topics. For example, Prohibition, C.S. Lewis and the Inklings, and Mount Rushmore. Fee for members and non-members.
Coloring Club for Adults meets monthly. Bring
your own supplies or use supplies provided. Coffee
available for purchase.
Healthy Living topics are presented by local providers and have included Overcoming Exercise Barriers,
Health Care Directives, Brain Health, and Eye
Health. No fee; open to the public.
Kitchen Band meets monthly for practice and performs at area care facilities.
Life Writing Group meets monthly. Simple technique and topics to record personal and family stories. Members only. No fee.
Hobby & Special Interest presentations have included Blue Birds, Ham Radio, Photo Organization.
Open to public; fee may apply.
Out to Lunch Bunch meets monthly and visits area
restaurants. Members only; meal cost Dutch Treat.
Local Tours are held in the warm weather months
and have included Sage Glass, the Woolen Mill, and
Academy for the Deaf. Open to public, fees apply.
Trips
Dining Program
Friendship Travel of Faribault arranges the trips
with registration taken through the Senior Center.
Open to the public. Trips are offered throughout the
year including one-day, overnight, and extended stay
options. They are regularly scheduled to Old Log
Theater, the Plymouth Playhouse, Jackpot Junction,
and more.
The Faribault Senior Center is the congregate dining
site for Faribault. Designed for seniors, meals are
open to all. Served M-F at 11:30 a.m. No reservation needed unless otherwise noted for holiday
meals. Monthly birthday party celebrated on the last
Tuesday of the month.

Support Services
Bone Builders Classes meet regularly at Milestone
Senior Living. This exercise program improves
strength & balance, enhances energy & well-being,
and increases socialization. An RSVP program.
Open to public;no fee.
Blood Pressure Check offered each Wednesday at
noon and provided by staff from local agencies. No
fee; walk-in.
Caregiver Support Group for persons caring for an
adult family member or friend. Meets monthly at
Milestone Senior Living.
Bridge Marathon meets at the FASC twice a month
during the school year. Group membership.
Cannon Valley Elder Collegium founded in Northfield and recently available in Faribault. Lifelong
learning opportunities for anyone age 50 & over.
Held at FASC and other sites in Faribault. Fee.
Checkbook Balance Service provided by appointment. No fee.
Estate and Will Advice Clinics offered several
times a year. Thanks to local attorneys, participants
can meet for a private consultation to discuss questions & concerns. By appointment; no fee.
Civil War Roundtable meets monthly at FASC.
Open to public; group membership.
Continuing Education for Care Providers
in partnership with Rice County Public Health offering
classes for local long-term care providers. Held at
FASC. Open to public; no fee.
Foot Clinic offered twice a month by appointment.
Fee payable to nurse.
Health Care Directives assistance available by appointment. Complete a document that describes
health care wishes. No fee.
Driver Safety Program classes held monthly at the
FASC and provided by AARP trained instructors. For
persons age 55 & older updating driving skills and
reviewing the rules of the road. Open to public; fee.
Health Insurance Counseling provided by trained
volunteers, a program of the MN Board on Aging.
Assistance with Medicare enrollment, health insurance questions, benefits check-up. By appointment;
no fee.
Flu Shot Clinic at the FASC annually by Rice
County Public Health. Open to public; fee.
Gallery on the Go at the FASC with group guide
Suzanne Schwichtenberg. Complete a painting on
canvas in an afternoon. Open to public; fee.
Information and Referral Service
Providing connections and assistance to anyone who
has a question or concern about the well-being of an
older adult. No fee; offered by phone or stop in.
Golden Kiwanis group meets at the FASC several
times a month; group membership.
Medication Review provided by a local pharmacist
by appointment to review all medications, answer
questions, and help with problem solving. No fee.
Hometown Holiday held in December and hosted
by the FASC, Buckham Memorial Library, and Faribault Parks & Recreation. Open to public; no fee
The FASC also facilitates and/or
provides space for the following:
National Night Out/Night to Unite held in August
and hosted by the FASC, Buckham Library and Faribault Parks & Rec. Open to public; fees may apply.
Red Hat group meets here monthly for lunch. Group
membership.
Pickleball Clinic periodically held at Community
Center. Open to public; fee.
Senior Friendship Volunteers are persons age 55
and older who assist seniors by doing the types of
things that friends do for friends. Monthly volunteer
meeting at FASC. If you need a volunteer or want to
volunteer contact the Retired and Senior Volunteer
Program (RSVP) at 507-450-1518.
Living Well with Chronic Conditions is a 6-week
workshop series for persons living with an on-going
health condition to gain tools for better living. Taught
by trained leaders. Open to public; no fee.
