Ohhh, What a Night!
What a smash hit we had last month, when the Young
Theatre Company brought their acclaimed production of
Dimboola to Murringo Hall. The wedding bells were
ringing, relatives were fighting and good old Morrie was
calling out, “No Worries!”
A magnificent effort from a dedicated group of locals
saw this night such a success. Most notably, Tricia Mack
and Leah Taubman are to be congratulated on their
organisation and Christina Hammer for her catering co-ordination. They were
ably assisted by a number of people in the kitchen, cooking beforehand, cleaning before and afterwards, setting up electrical systems and more. A big thanks
and shout out to everybody concerned.
We were very grateful for the support of the wedding band “The ReVamps”
fronted by our own local talent Judy Barker, who generously donated their time
for the this prestigious Murringo event.
The audience had a fantastic time and the
laughter could be heard all around the village
throughout the night. The event was a joint
fundraiser for the Murringo Community
Association and the Murringo P&C and raised
some much welcomed funds for both
organisations. Congratulations to all!

Local Lad does it again and again…...
When Alex Rotzler received the award for the Apprentice of the Year in Motor Cycle mechanics for NSW/
ACT he thought that was the end of it. But no! To his amazement he was called on again twice to receive
two more awards. At a ceremony in Oranges he received the “Outstanding Student of the Year Award”
from the Western Area of TAFE. A second ceremony in Orange, which was for the combined rural TAFE
areas of Riverina and Western, he thought he was just going to receive his award for Apprentice of the
Year but was blown away when it was announced that he had won the “Top Apprentice in Vehicle Trades”
award. He now goes on to compete in this category for the state award at an event in Sydney.
After taking home not one, but two apprentice of the year titles in recent weeks, you could forgive Alex
who work at Adam Besedic Motorcycles in Cowra for being a little bit smug, but the 22-year-old is keeping
both feet firmly on the ground, thanks to his down-to-earth attitude and some gentle ribbing from his
work mates.
His graduating student profile said while not a natural scholar, Alex showed great determination to put in
the hours of study to make sure his theory marks were equal to his practical skills.
Pegged as a future leader in the motorcycle industry, he achieved an average theory mark of 81 per cent
in his assessments across the three-year course. It added his commitment to hard work, attention to
detail, community involvement through the Rural Fire Service and ongoing development is "beyond
reproach". Alex, who's now fully qualified as a motorcycle mechanic, said he believes it's his hard work
and dedication to his job that got him over the line.
"It was probably the dedication I have for motorbikes, the passion towards them. I've had it from a young
age, I was brought up with bikes and I love them," Alex said.
Naturally, his mother and father are enormously proud of his achievements and we am sure everyone will
wish him well in Sydney. Whatever the outcome, he has done so well and we are so proud of him.
Alex with his current awards for motorcycle mechanics :
1-Apprentice of the Year
2-Outstanding Graduating Student’s Award Apprentice of the Year
3-TAFE western apprentice of the year
4- NSW Top Apprentice in Vehicle Trades.
Murringo is very proud of you, Alex!

Marie is still looking over her beloved Parramatta….
You may remember seeing this little old lady driving her faithful
blue EH Holden out the Murringo Road, stopping to open and
close the property gate at the end of the Murringo straight. Marie Gaul was this little old lady with a heart of gold, who lived in
the log cabin on top of the hill overlooking Murringo and who
will be missed by many. Here is a little bit about Marie….
Long time Murringo resident Mrs Marie Gaul passed away on the
23rd May after a long illness. Many people may have known Marie through her role at the Young Neighbourhood Centre where
she worked for many years. Marie loved her log cabin tucked
away behind the trees up on the hill near Wambanumba Hill.
She enjoyed looking east out her lounge room window for a
magnificent view of the sunrise - as well as the sprawling views
north east towards Cowra. She also dearly loved her blue EH
Holden which she drove for many, many years. Marie was a loyal
and very passionate Parramatta supporter and since her passing
her beloved Eels have been playing very well. Marie must be
sending down good vibes to them and it has been said that she is
‘helping’ the Blues star Jarryd Hayne ride to victory in the State
of Origin.
Marie is in our Murringo Footy Tipping Competition and her tips
are going quite well. We have decided to leave her in the tipping
competition and if she comes away with some winnings, the
money will go to one of her many charities that she supported.
Before living in Young, Marie lived in many places including
Queensland, Sydney and Moree- where she was born in 1925.
Marie passed away at the age of 89 years.
Rest in Peace, Marie.
A lucky escape…………...
A very lucky father and daughter escaped their
fiery utility a week and a half ago, when it
became engulfed in flames just as they were
leaving their property, “Bundaleer” on Maloneys
Road, Murringo.
Nathan Taylor and his daughter were on their
way out when he noticed smoke coming from his
vehicle and then suddenly saw flames. Nathan
jumped out of the ute grabbing his daughter and
fled the burning vehicle.
There was nothing Nathan could do but stand
back and watch the family vehicle burn until it
was almost unrecognisable.
Nathan and his lovely wife, Emma are thanking
their lucky stars that both their daughter and
Nathan got away without any injuries or with any
burns.

Murringo Masters Footy in October ……...
6th Annual Masters Rugby
League Carnival
YOUNG - 18/19 OCTOBER 2014
Murringo is entering a team in the 6th Annual Carnival which will be held on the 18th & 19th October.
You know it has been over 60 years since Murringo had a league team and it’s great to see our little
village represented and on the field again.
Games are played to modified rules, no scores are kept and no ‘winners’ – just Rugby League played by
35+ year olds, having heaps of fun in various coloured shorts that allow ‘touch to tackle’!.
Imagine seeing names like the Maloney’s, Dowling’s, Price’s, Patterson’s, Parkman’s, O’Dea’s, Cummings,
McDonalds, to name but a few, represent Murringo!
If you would like to have a run on the paddock for Murringo, please give Bill Maloney a call on 6384-6248
or 0419 698 631. We already have a few names but we would like a few more to add to the team.
Check out this blast from the past which I think is a University Shield team with a few Murringo faces!

We bid farewell to June Crowe
Some Murringo residence may recalled June & Tommy Crowe living down the
Murringo Flats Road for over 22 years back in the 1950’s and 60’s. June sadly
passed away on the 11th May at the grand ol’ age of 89 years. Below are
some memories shared by the family at her funeral.
June was born in Young on the 18th June 1925. Her mother died when she
was only 2 years old during childbirth. She was raised by Clarrie and Snow
Phillips who were her aunty and uncle and lived at “Sunnyside”, a few miles
outside Young. Her brothers were split up to live other family members.
June married Tom on the 4th July 1944. As she was only 19, a few problems
arose, as in those days one had to obtain consent from the parents to be
able to marry before the age of 21. But being a very determined young
woman she soon obtained permission and she married the love of her life,
Tom and stayed together until his death a few years ago.
June and Tom spent the following 22 years living on the farm on the Murringo Flats Road. They raised two
children - Judith and Keith. One day, Keith decided to drink some kerosene, luckily mum was a quick thinker
and made me throw up and rapidly drove me to the hospital.
June was a very hard worker - as well as raising their
children, she did all the cooking for the workers on
the farm, undertook farm duties such as feeding pigs
and chickens, milking the cows and all these made
her very happy as long as she was helping out her
husband, Tom. June was a great cook. Nothing was
too much trouble, even when they would often have
twenty or more people for Christmas dinner. Keith
can still remember the fabulous meals she would
prepare especially her cream puffs.
June and Tom moved to Canberra in 1966 and bought
a house in Hackett. Keith can remember his mum and
dad looking at a house in Curtin and she said it was
too far out of town and she may as well stay on the farm.
Tom and June in their younger days.
The family had a great life living in Hackett as they did on the farm in Murringo. June was very patient, tolerant
and understanding when it came to her children. They were always bringing friends home after dinners and
after attending balls and footy matches to carry
Tom and June
on having fun and having a few drinks etc.
sometimes they would stay on for breakfast.
June worked at David Jones in Canberra in the
china and glassware department where she
particularly loved selling her Villeroy, Bock and
Waterford Crystal. She also worked at the
souvenior shop at the Lakeside Hotel and at
Crowes Curtains. Due to Tom’s failing eyesight,
June joined Tom in his manufactures agency
business where she took on the major part of the
work. June had to do all the driving, writing and
ordering. June had a great flair for decorating and
she helped Keith greatly in his business in
Canberra called Crowes Curtains.
Page 6
We bid farewell to June Crowe
June loved sport and in her early days she played tennis and
golf. She even took up croquet at one stage. June enjoyed
watching football and in particularly her beloved team - Manly.
June also loved the coast where her and Tom had a caravan at
Bateman’s Bay for many years. She loved all her children and
grandchildren and all their friends staying over at the van.
Many a time they would have five to ten people staying with
them and water-skiing for the weekend. It was no problem for
June - she love every minute of it. June loved having people
around her, especially the men, including Jack O’Connell and
Rex Chaffer who she always jokingly say that they were her
special boyfriends. She had a great sense of humour.
June kept in contact with many of her long time friends,
especially Lorna Parkman who she loved to catch up with and
find out all the events that were happening around Murringo
and Young.
June moved into her unit at Goodwin Village in 2008 so she
could assist Tom and be close to him. She would walk over in
the morning to help him with his breakfast an d leave after he had his evening meal. June was dedicated to
Tommy and loved him dearly.
After the heartache of loosing Tom, June was able to start a new phase of her life. She made many great
friends at Goodwin and she enjoyed the may lunch dates, bus trips and croquet days. The family would almost
have to make a booking to fit into their mother’s busy schedule.
June was very loyal to her friends, if she made a commitment, she would always honour it. She was always on
punctual and be ready and waiting on time. June was loved for her caring and helpful attitude and even in her
eighties if one of the family were sick, June would cook and send food over to them. Always the wonderful and
thoughtful mother!
June will always be remembered as a happy, bubbly and an elegant
lady. She will be missed greatly and remembered fondly by all her
children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Judith, Tom, June and Keith

Peddle Power Rewards for Kyle
You may have come across this young man on his bicycle
peddling out from town, through his father’s childhood village
here in Murringo then back to Young almost every afternoon
after work. His name is Kyle Williams, the determined son of
Garry and Helen Williams who also took out the Wagga
annual handicap road bike race only a fortnight ago.
Kyle has only just started competing in races and the 85 km
race is only Kyle’s second race event, competing in a field of over
100 riders from around the state. The course wound over rolling
hills from Wantabadgery to Junee and back down the Bomen
Road for the first 65 km. In the final 20 km the track headed east,
back to Wantabadgery into the hill section. It was here that Kyle
followed a Wagga rider as he attacked up the hill. Kyle then pulled around his opponent and put time into
him. By the second hill he had pulled in front of the group by 500 metres and kept that advantage to the
finish line.
With all of Young’s cyclists signed up with the Cootamundra Club, it was the first win by a Coota Club
member in the open handicap event in living memory, according to club members. The Wagga event
draws riders from all over NSW and includes members of the semi-professional National Racing Series
teams, as well as a number of ex- Olympians and Australian masters representatives, including Young’s
own Kevin Goodman.
Being a handicap event the amateur riders are given different starting times. This particular weekend Kyle
had a 15 minute start on the scratch riders and out-rode the handicap, coming in three minutes before
the group, a strong ride in the rain.
Kyle’s father, Garry used to ride with Kyle until he couldn’t keep up with him any longer. It used to be
Garry cycling up front when Kyle was younger, now Kyle just leaves him for dead. Hence Garry’s cycling
retirement.
If you see Kyle
on the roads on
his bike with his
little flashing
light around
Murringo, you
might give him
a little toot for
support.
Well Done,
Mate!

News from Murringo Public School
Term Two is almost at an end, and Murringo Public School has been a busy, productive and exciting place
to be. There have been some interesting units being studied in class, as well as a wide range of
extra-curricular activities to extend the children’s learning.
This term Lower Division have been studying a unit of work called ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Learning’ – all
about the weather. It has been very cute to watch little 5 and 6 year old kids laying about on the grass,
discussing whether the clouds are cumulus, cirrus or stratus. They have also been conducting scientific
experiments and presenting these to the class.
Upper Division have been immersed in a unit of work called ‘I Love a Sunburnt Country’, in which they
have been learning all about Australian history. In an interesting twist, they have been working from the
present day and going back through time – studying 1 or 2 decades a week. They have learnt about
multiculturalism, Aboriginal rights, the Vietnam War, the Australian movie industry, the Great Depression,
both World Wars, Federation and a myriad of other topics along the way.
Alongside the impressive learning in the classroom, the students have been taking part in these other
exciting learning experiences:
Cross Country – Small Schools, District and Regional Carnivals
We had 2 students make the Regional Carnival this year – Archie and Anna Dowling. Both of the kids
were very sick on the day, but still managed some amazing results. Archie came 20th in his field (of over
50 runners) and Anna came 4th (even though she hadn’t been out of bed for the previous 4 days). This
means that Anna will be heading off to the State Cross Country Carnival in Sydney early next term.
Athletics – Small Schools and District Carnivals
A team of 5 kids from Murringo made it to the District Carnival
this year – Anna, Michael, Abbie, Archie and Zac. They all did a
fantastic job and Anna and Archie made it through to Regionals
for their individual events. Our relay team has also qualified for
the Regional Carnival and has been practising hard with their
relay coach – Sonya Dowling.

News from Murringo School…...
Soccer Report
Murringo Public School has truly
embraced the Soccer World Cup this
week, with our Knockout Soccer team
taking part in a gala day on a very dull
and cold day in Cootamundra. This
competition is specifically for small
schools and we fielded a team ranging
from our gorgeous Kindy student Max,
through to our Year 6 superstars. We
played three games on the day, against
Binalong, Wyalong and Stockinbingal
schools. Our team convincingly won all of their games and have now progressed on to the next round of
the state wide competition, next term. Fantastic work team!
Cowra Eisteddfod – Speech and Drama and Music
We had some fantastic successes at the Cowra Eisteddfod this year, with students entered in a total of 15
categories. Our most successful competitors were:
Tennyson Neville
Encouragement Trophy for 10yrs+u Drama
Lower Division Marimba Ensemble 1st in Stage 1 Untuned Percussion (music)
Abbie Grant
1st in Story From A Picture (drama)
2nd in Reading from Sight (drama)
2nd in Prepared Prose (drama)
Highly Commended in Prepared Reading (drama)
Abbie Grant and Tennyson Neville
2nd in Telephone Conversation for Two (drama)
Tennyson Neville
3rd in Prepared Mime (drama)
Debating – Year 5 and 6 Premier’s Debating Challenge
Our debating team of Anna, Michael, Tennyson and Abbie are having their very first go at this fantastic
learning experience. They have been training hard and are improving with every debate. Two members
of our team are actually only in
Year 4, so they have done an
amazing job so far in their
debates against Murrumburrah
Public and Young Public
(the local powerhouse in
debating).
Page 11
Murringo Community Association News
The Murringo Community Association met again this
month, with a productive and informative meeting
well attended.
We spent some time discussing the Crown Lands
White Paper and the possible implications that is
going to have for Murringo. There were also some
new, exciting events to discuss, which will be coming
up over the next 12 months.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to our
community and keep up the good work.
We have had some new community members put their hand up for mowing in the village
and they are currently in talks with Marty about future plans. The village is looking nice
and green at the moment (except for the much needed roadworks at the moment!) but
still a pleasure to drive through.
The ground has not been dug yet for our much anticipated footpath and we are always in
contact with Young Shire Council to see just what is going on. Dirk Wymer has told us
that the wet weather has slowed work down so keep your eye on this space.
Again, this is our area of greatest need at the moment. We are going to have a short
working bee, on Saturday the 5th of July from 1.00-3.00pm. Bring along your shovels, we
are going to do a little bit of work on the downpipes and drainage around the hall.
No movement has been made since our last Murringo Matters, as we continue to wait on
Young Shire Council to formalise their control of the paddock. It has been about 10 years
since these discussions started … a little frustrating to say the least. We do keep on
asking the questions though, and will continue to do so.
Our historians were pretty busy over the past month, preparing for Dimboola, so
Heritage has been put on the backburner for a little while. Our first oral history, with
Gordon Dowling, is now on the village website – www.murringovillage.com – and is a
fascinating listen. Thanks to Frank for his work on our oral history project. We are
starting to put together some local family profile
Gordon Dowling
pages on the website as well, with
information/photos that were supplied for
publication in the 150th anniversary of the
school. Our first family profile page is the
Gruber family. If you would like to see your
family profiled on the local history section of our
website, please get in contact with us and we
will start compiling the information.
Page 12
Murringo Community Association News
At the moment, we are concentrating our efforts on a response to the NSW Government’s
Crown Lands Legislation White Paper, which has proposed some significant changes to the
way in which Crown Land will be managed in NSW. This will affect Murringo in a number of
ways, that are yet to be known. Certainly, the proposal means that we will no longer have a
‘village common’, as this will revert to Crown Land. We will publish our submission to the
White Paper in the next issue of Murringo Matters.
There are heaps of ways to get involved with your local community and we always like
seeing new faces. Here are some of the ways that you might like to get together with your
neighbours and friends:
Facebook Page – https://www.facebook.com/Murringo?ref=hl
Village Website – www.murringovillage.com
Murringo Motor Mouths – Netball Team – always looking for more players. We play on
Monday nights at the PCYC in Young. Call Kellie on 6384 6437.
Murringo Football Team – we can’t wait to see these guys hit the field after a LOOONG time
away from competition. The big carnival will be held sometime in October. If you are
interested call Bill Maloney on 6384-6248.
MCA Meetings – the next meeting will be held on the 2nd Tuesday night in August. This will
be our AGM and we would love to see some new blood on the committee. Membership
fees are due at that meeting.
Tennis – Ladies play on Tuesday mornings from 9.00am and Family Tennis is held on Sunday
afternoons from approximately 2.00pm. You don’t have to be a great player, come along
for some fun and fitness. There is play equipment for the kids and the BBQ is available to
cook your lunch on.
A massive congratulations to the people involved in making Dimboola such a success last
month. There were a large number of people who had something to do with the event, but
our biggest thanks go to Tricia Mack and Leah Taubman (from the MCA) and Christine
Hammer (from the Murringo P&C) for their leadership on this event. The MCA and P&C
shared the organisation and it was a great example of how we can work together to achieve
great things in the village. Thank you to the Young Theatre Company and The Revamps,
who brought the show to our village and gave us such a great night. The Revamps, in
particular, donated their time for our event, because Judy Barker is one of the lead singers
and is a valued member of our community.
There are some great events coming up during the rest of the year, including:
Country Music Gig Fundraiser - Saturday, 19th July in the Hall. See page 7 for details.
Car Rally/Observation Run/Scavenger Hunt – 2nd Sunday in August
Murringo Markets – 4th Sunday in August
Community Bike Ride – from the Hall to the Gap – 2nd Sunday in October or November.
Progressive Dinner – we have entrée and main sorted, still looking for a host for dessert-Oct
Cricket Match between Murringo and Wombat cricket teams – in November
Boxing Day Cricket Match – obviously in December down the main drag.
Some new events for 2015 are also already being discussed and planned, including:
Euchre/Poker night - Set down for in the Hall
Bonfire/Cracker Night – June long weekend in the Well Paddock
Murringo Masterpieces – a poetry/song writing/sculpture/art competition

Congratulations Catherine
Our very own local girl and Murringoite,
Catherine Cusack was selected as a finalist
for the NSW State Training Awards as VET
Trainer of the Year. Well Done, Catherine!
Catherine has been working tirelessly on
numerous work based programs with
employers and employees and is held in
the highest regard by all her peers and her
many students.
The award ceremony was held on the
evening of Thursday, 12th June in Wagga
and even though Catherine didn't come
away with the gong she should be very
proud of all her efforts, her tireless hours
of work and her beautiful nature - just as
we are!
On the right is an excerpt which was
published in The Daily Advertiser in Wagga
elaborating just how committed and hard
working Catherine has shown to become a
finalist in this very prestigious award.
Congratulations Catherine!
During all this, Catherine even had time to
help make the dessert for the Dimboola
production at the Murringo Hall. She is a
jack of all trades!

30 years apart…….
Get a load of this……………..Leah Taubman has taken a photo of her husband, Richard Taubman at Brunette Downs in
the same place with the same Toyota Landcruiser and the same trailer as the photo above which was taken 30 years

Something for Everyone……..
A 90-year-old man goes for a physical. All of his tests come back with
normal results.
The doctor says, "George, everything looks great. How are you doing
mentally and emotionally? Are you at peace with God?"
George replies, "God and I are tight. He knows I have poor eyesight,
so He's fixed it so when I get up in the middle of the night to go to the
bathroom poof! The light goes on. When I'm done, poof! The light
goes off."
“Wow, that's incredible," the doctor says.
A little later in the day, the doctor calls George's wife. "Ethel," he says,
"George is doing fine! But I had to call you because I'm in awe of his
relationship with God. Is it true that he gets up during the night, and
poof the light goes on in the bathroom, and when he's done, poof, the
light goes off?"
"Oh sweetheart", exclaims Ethel.
"The Silly Old Bugger is weeing in the refrigerator again!
