PNoy inspects infra project in Bulacan
By Charlene A. Cayabyab
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO –
President Benigno Aquino
III inspected on Tuesday some of the major
infrastructure projects of
his administration in Bulacan.
En route to Hagonoy,
Aquino had an aerial inspection of the Plaridel
Bypass
Road
Project
Phase II and Valenzuela- Obando-Meycauayan
Flood Control Project.
The completion of the
Plaridel Bypass Road cuts
travel time from Barangay
Burol in Balagtas to San
Rafael by around 45 to
50 minutes, as travel distance will be shortened by
5km.
Also, 15,000 vehicles
will be diverted to the
bypass, which would decongest traffic at PanPhilippine Highway by 40
percent thereby restoring
its original function.
Moreover, the VOM
Flood Control Project intends to build a 15 kilometer-dike in the shoreline of
Obando to prevent water
from Manila Bay to come
in during high tide as
well as a pumping station
which pumps water out to
the other side of the dike
during heavy rains.
In Hagonoy, Aquino
inspected the construction of two, two-storey,
10-classroom
school
buildings at Ramona S.
Trillana High SchoolSta. Elena Campus which
are being built under the
““Matuwid na Daan sa Silid-Aralan” project of the
Philippine
Amusement
and Gaming Corporation
(PAGCOR).
Under it, Department
of Education identifies the
public schools, which are
in need of new classrooms
while Department of Public Works and Highways
handles the construction.
Each classroom measures 7 x 9 meters, which
is bigger compared to the
typical 6 x 7 meters to 7 x
8 meters. They also have
higher ceilings and are
elevated and can accommodate up to 60 students
with still ample space to
move around.
Other major features
of the buildings include
storage rooms, a stage,

By Froilan E. Magtoto
CAMP OLIVAS – Operatives
of the Central Luzon Philippine Drug Enforcement
Agency (PDEA-3) seized
P175,000 worth of shabu
and arrested two persons
the other day during a
drug sting in Sta. Maria,
Bulacan.
PDEA-3
Regional
Director Gladys Rosales
identified the suspects as
Sancho Matias, 59, of Sta.
Maria, Bulacan and a minor whose identity was
withheld but a resident of
Bagong Silang, Caloocan
City.
Rosales said PDEA
agents at first were able to
negotiate for the purchase
of 50 grams of shabu and
persuaded the drug dealers
to meet at the mall in Barangay Sta. Clara, Sta Maria, Bulacan.
The suspects were collared after they handed
the shabu to an agent who
acted as a poseur buyer.
Rosales said the operation yielded a plastic bag
containing 50 grams of the
illegal substance with an
estimated street value of
P175,000. The agents were
also able to recover the
marked money used in the
sting.
The age of the minor
suspect is still the subject of
verification, said Rosales.
The two suspects are
now detained at the PDEA

Subic Freeport gears up
for summer tourist season
By Dante M. Salvana
SUBIC BAY FREEPORT — Central
Luzon’s most visited tourist
destination is gearing up to
keep everything hot — that
is, sizzling hot for a n exciting
and enjoyable stay of tourists
trooping here for summer vacation, especially during the
Lenten season.
Subic Bay Metropolitan
Authority (SBMA) Chairman
Roberto Garcia said the agency has already implemented
major face-lift projects in
most tourism facilities and
infrastructures here in preparation for the usual surge of
summer visitors.
“For the past weeks, maintenance and ground personnel
have all been busy with
various projects to make sure
that Subic Bay Freeport would
be ready for the big volume
of tourists arriving during
summer, especially this Holy
Week,” Garcia said.
“And because Subic is becoming more and more of a
hot item among travelers, we
really have to make sure that
the Freeport remains to be the
best destination they’d always
want to return to,” he added.
Referring to reports from
the SBMA Tourism Department, Garcia said that tourist
arrivals in Subic reached 7.3
million in 2015, an increase
of 14 percent over the 6.4-million record in 2014.
He noted that tourists
who actually stayed overnight or for several days in
Subic reached 1.4
3 million
in 2015, or 21 percent higher
than the 1.18 million recorded
in 2014.
The figures were based on
reports from hotel operators
in Subic, who noted that the
occupancy rate also increased
to 70 percent last year, the
highest in the past four years.
“This is why there is a
need to really work hard to
maintain our status in the
top list of the Department of
Tourism-Region III (DoT-3).
All of us should be ambassadors of tourism of the SBMA,”
Garcia also told employees on
Monday.
Subic was conferred the
Number 1 Tourist Destination in Region 3 by the DoT-3
for the past two consecutive
years, and was namedas well
as “Premier Convention Capital of Central Luzon” in 2012.
Garcia said that the SBMA
is now refurbishing all the
road features in Subic
, and
placing police and travelers
assistance outposts in strategic areas in time for the summer season.
Meanwhile, tourism-related businesses are also making necessary renovations and
upgrading their facilities, he
added.
Garcia said the most important project that SBMA is
completing today is the renovation of the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center
(SBECC) in the amount of P21
million. This will be the venue
of Ad Summit Pilipinas 2016,
which will bring together
the country’s top advertising
and marketing practitioners
here on March 9 to 12. •

SSS, Tesda Bataan
to execute
pact on trainees’
membership
By Butch Gunio
BALANGA CITY – The Social Security
System (SSS) and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) Bataan are scheduled to
sign a Memorandum of Agreement
(MOA) on SSS membership of Dual
Training System (DTS) trainees in the
province, according to SSS Mariveles
Branch Manager Jordan Herrera. “The MOA signing is scheduled
on February 26 at SSS Balanga Office,” he added.
SSS executives Professional and
Informal Sectors Department Assistant Vice President Noel Coyupan
and Luzon Group Senior Vice President Josie Magana, accompanied by
Balanga Branch Manager Joel Villafuerte and Herrera, met last November at the Tesda Bataan Provincial
Director Grace Castillo regarding
the agreement.
“The program is being discussed
with Tesda higher-ups for the possibility of making it a policy to be implemented nationwide,” the Tesda Bataan
provincial director earlier disclosed.
Herrera pointed out that their
target is to make all Tesda DTS
trainees in the country become SSS
members.
“DTS trainees have income and
they will be registered as self-employed employees,” he explained.
DTS is a training modality implemented by Tesda that combines
theoretical and practical training. It
is called dual training because learning takes place alternately in two
venues: the school or training center
and the company or workshop.
Herrera said SSS is working to
expand its membership particularly
in the informal sectors of the society.
In Bataan, tricycles operators
and drivers, members of homeowners associations, some barangays,
LGU job order employees, vendors,
and inmates have become members of the social security through
diligent effort of SSS Bataan officers
like Herrera. •

Free MDRs
GOVERNOR Lilia Pineda has
recently chosen to spend time
distributing free Members’ Data
Records (MDRs) to indigents in
the province. Last Monday, a day
after her birthday, she distributed MDRs in her hometown of
Lubao.
Lubao Mayor Mylyn PinedaCayabyab expressed gratitude to
the Governor, as well as the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) for the activity, which benefited some 10,073
local folk.
While the good mayor has lauded the efforts of the Governor,
Nanay has cited the national government for the renewal of the
MDRs, which can be used by the
beneficiaries for health services.
These also entitle them to benefits as members under the
National Household Targeting
System for Poverty Reduction
(NHTS-PR) of the Department
of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
And again, Nanay has reminded
the indigent folk about the “no
balance billing policy” wherein
they will not have to pay for their
hospitalization.
The Governor will continue to
distribute free MDRs all over the
province, in line with her vision
to uplift the lives of her kabalens,
especially in terms of the health
services due them.

West Point (class of 1914),
was born in Calamba, Laguna.
Lim served as brigadier
general and became the
top–ranking Filipino under General Douglas MacArthur, tasked with the
defense of Southern Luzon
when the Philippine Army
was incorporated into the
American Forces on July
16, 1941.
He survived the infamous Bataan Death March
after American and Filipino forces surrendered to the Japanese forces on April
9, 1942.
The event was called Death March
because Filipino-American troops who surrendered were forced at
gunpoint to march from
Bataan to San Fernando, Pampanga, under
the hot tropical sun and
later proceeded to Capas, Tarlac. Those who
could not march because of physical weakness were shot down or
bayoneted.
Subsequently, admitted for injuries at the
Philippine General Hospital, Lim convinced the
Japanese of his incapacitation and pretended to be confined
at the PGH while managing to conduct
secret guerrilla activities in Luzon.
In 1944, Lim was ordered to rejoin
General Douglas MacArthur in Australia. He attempted to travel but was
captured en route to Australia by the
Japanese. He was held for months at
Fort Santiago and the Bilibid Prison before being beheaded, along with Colonel
Antonio Escoda, shortly before the liberation.
He received the Legion of Merit and
the Purple Heart awards. General Lim
also appears on the P1,000 banknote in
recognition of his services to the Filipino
people.
He died on December 31, 1944 at the
age of 56. He is listed among the Tablets
of the Missing at Manila National Cemetery.
Camp Vicente Lim in Laguna was
named in his honor. •

John Lloyd denies Bea Alonzo
JOHN Lloyd Cruz is currently attending
the Berlin International Filmfest in Germany where the 8-hour, black and white
movie he made for Director Lav Diaz,
“Hele ng Hiwagang Hapis (Lullaby to the
Sorrowful Mystery)”, is an official entry
in the main competition section, where
multi-Oscar winner Meryl Streep is the
head of the jury. Also attending the prestigious Berlinale with him are his co-stars,
Piolo Pascual and Alessandra de Rossi.
Before he flew to Berlin, Lloydie allowed himself to be interviewed on TV
Patrol and he was asked if he’s really now
into a relationship with his perennial
ka-loveteam, Bea Alonzo. “Hindi po,” he
says. “Magkaibigan lang po kami.”
So, he really does not have a romantic relationship with Bea? “Wala po,” he
insists.
What the interviewer forgot to ask
him was that if it’s true that he has called
it quits with Angelica Panganiban. This
is something he cannot deny as Angelica
herself has posted some messages in her
social media account clearly indicating
that they’ve indeed parted ways.
Lloydie also temporarily said goodbye
to Jennylyn Mercado, with whom
he’s currently shooting a rom com
under the direction of Cathy Garcia-Molina. “I’ve long been wanting to do a movie with her,” he
says. “Noon pa dapat kami merong
gagawin pero hindi natuloy. Finally, ito pala ‘yung kapalit, so I’m very
happy. I’m really excited to
experience her talent.”

CCA celebrates 4th founding anniversary
BY Charlene A. Cayabyab
ANGELES CITY – The City College of Angeles (CCA) celebrated its fourth founding
anniversary on Monday.
The celebration, with a
theme “Moving 4ward, Pursuing the Dream”, highlighted
the college’s growing achievements and its students’ talents throughout the years.
“Education is the only solution in stopping the people
from wallowing in poverty,”
Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan
said during the celebration.
“The only way that Angeleños, along with the rest
of the country, can move to
greater heights is to prioritize and give emphasis on
education,” he added.
Pamintuan firmly believes that having at least one
college graduate per family
could help decrease the incidence of crime, while at the
same time, increase a city’s
economic activity.
The mayor also recalled
his experience as a young
student during the Martial
Law years, when he was a 23year old Law student at San
Beda and the struggles that
he and his contemporaries
have undergone to battle
the ills of Martial Law. He
enjoined the students to ap-
preciate the freedom they
are now enjoying and to fight
their own struggles to free
themselves from poverty and
helplessness.
Meanwhile, CCA president Averell Laquindanum
said that the campus is not
only focusing on cognitive
development and competence, but also on holistic
growth and character development.
“Receiving positive feedback from the community
proves that we are doing the
right thing in upholding the
core values of the college:
excellence, stewardship, and
resiliency. We are indeed
developing the total human
person,” Laquindanum said.
The four-day event consists of various sports activities such as volleyball and
basketball, a cheer dance
competition, and an academic quiz bee, among others.
The City College of Angeles is a project of the city
mayor to provide high quality education. It is a college
built for the less fortunate
who cannot afford the high
tuition fees of other private
universities in the city.
The college is also set
to hold its first ever graduation rites for its first batch of
graduates this year. •

The mayor expressed gratitude during the distribution of free MDRs held
respectively at Sto. Tomas Covered
Court, Lubao Gymnasium, Sta. Maria Covered Court, Calangain Covered
Court, and Lourdes Covered Court last
Monday.
The mayor also thanked the Governor and the provincial board headed by
Vice Governor Dennis “Delta” Pineda
for the P50-million budget allotted for
the renovation of the Escolastica Romero District Hospital (ERDH).
During the activity, Gov. Pineda cited the national government for the renewal of the MDRs.
The Governor also urged the beneficiaries to maximize the use of their free
insurance to check and maintain their
good health conditions and to avail the
benefits entitled to them as members
under the National Household Targeting System for Poverty Reduction
(NHTS-PR) of the Department of Social
Welfare and Development (DSWD).
Pineda also advised the PhilHealth
members to use their MDRs in any government hospital to avail the “no balance billing policy” wherein they will
not pay for their hospitalization.
“Maximize your PhilHealth membership. Our provincial and district
hospitals are ready to serve you,” the
Governor said.
Present during the activity were senatorial aspirant Manila Vice Mayor Isko

David-Dizon, PSWDO Elizabeth Baybayan, and other local officials.•

Last year alone, two summary execution victims emerged in a farming
community here.
Tiguelo said he relayed the information to a nearby police station to
check whether there were any missing
persons. He also dispatched policemen
to different places in this town as part
of their effort to identify the victim.
There were reports that the victim could be a member of a local drug
group but the police declined to comment about it.
“As long as the victim remains unidentified, it would be difficult for us
to reach to establish the motive and
the victim’s previous activities,” said
Tiguelo.•

“The selection of the Philippines as

very timely. We have much to share with
our colleagues and from our experiences particularly in the implementation of

Paje said the government was able to

2011 to 2015.
FAO records showed that the Philippines ranks fifth among 234 countries

started in 1948 at Wack-Wack Golf and Country Club, is the country’s oldest, largest and
most prestigious golf team competition –
widely acknowledged as the national clubs
championship of the Philippines.
The PAL Interclub’s stature derives from
two factors: the high level of competition – it
is a showcase for the country’s best golfing talent – and the strong team spirit and fellowship among its players, said the website http://
www.mabuhaygc.com/palinterclubgolf.html.
According to Gozo, Clark Development
Corporation President Atty. Arthur P. Tugade
was among the responsible persons in convincing PAL executives to conduct one of the
biggest golf tournaments for the first time in an
area north of Metro Manila. The event is usually held in golf clubs in the
Southern Luzon (mostly in Davao and Cebu),
after it was held in Wack-Wack on its first staging in 1948.
For the seniors’ category, the tournament
will start on February 25 to 28 while the regular golf games will tee-off on March 2 to March
5, Gozo said.
The website also said that from the start,
the PAL Interclub has been about gathering golf aficionados from across the country
and overseas for an annual reunion, where
they could renew old friendships and gain new
ones. Participants return year after year, not so
much as to win the championship - though that
is a principal goal – but to bask in the warmth
of fellowship and tradition.
The tourney also forges the remarkable camaraderie among its players and its hallowed
history of over 50 years, has imbued the PAL
Interclub with a unique character and made it
an enduring institution of Philippine golf, the
website said.•

Pelco I aims for zero
accidents in barangays
TEXT & PHOTOS BY
DENCIO PACHECO
IN ADDITION to the number of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
Projects of the Pampanga I Electric
Cooperative Inc. (Pelco I), the electric power distribution firm has come
up with yet another worthy endeavor
when it distributed last week several
“Slow Down” signages to barangays of
Candaba, Mexico, San Luis and Sta.
Ana in Pampanga.
The “Slow Down,
School Zone” signages
were fabricated by Pelco I
employees and are made
of steel pipes and metal
sheets.
The said signages were
distributed with Pelco I’s
aim of helping reduce, if
not totally avoid, accidents on roads and streets
especially those near
public schools. It can be
noted that many accidents
happen because of speeding vehicles and the lack
of road signages to warn
motorists.
Last year, Pelco I
distributed the same kind
of signages to barangays
in the municipalities of
Arayat and Magalang. The
said towns are likewise
under the coverage areas
of the said electric coop-
erative.
Engr. Loliano E. Allas,
Pelco I General Manager,
said that the said signages
are a form of help to
barangays in their aim for
zero accidents on the road.
John Eric Tumang, the
barangay captain of San
Antonio in Mexico, Pampanga meanwhile thanked
Pelco I for the said signages, saying that they are of
big help in accident-prone
communities in barangays.
Pelco I has a number
of CSR projects, among
which are free medical and
dental services at its CSR
Clinic at its main office
in Sto. Domingo, Mexico,
Pampanga, Fire Brigade,
free Life Insurance, among
others that entitle and
benefit its members-consumers.•
