All first year MMS students assembled in M501 at 2:00 pm for the lecture. It was very knowledgeable session especially for the students who were from IT background. Mr Uday Sawant who has an extensive experience of 28 years in software services industry ranging from business development, delivery, and technology development had opened up our minds to the new technologies and gave us all a brief understanding of upcoming technologies like COGNOS, MICROSTRATEGY, SAP & much more. He gave us insights on what role we will play in corporate world as business analysts, data scientist, data custodian, business intelligence, data warehouse experts & enterprise architect. He spoke on various challenges he faced at L&T Infotech during his tenure of 28 years. He also briefed us on what challenges as managers we all may face in future and for that we require in depth understanding of business & thorough domain knowledge. Further he told us about the upcoming technologies like cloud computing, business intelligence, micro strategy & big data analytics. He enlightened us with his job profile at L&T and the way he dealt with his clients & interacted with them. His current interests include Business Strategies for SME industries, Agriculture and Food processing Industries, Biotech Industry, Digital Transformation and Internet of Things. He also trained employees as a part of L&T InfoTech’s Leadership Development Program. Conducted various sessions for topics such as Negotiation skills, Financial Awareness for Managers, etc. At the end of the session he gave us feedback forms to rate the session & asked us to give feedback on how his session was helpful for each one of us as a management student who aim to be successful managers 2 years down the line. I would conclude it by saying overall it was a very interactive, career oriented session which would serve as a tool for bringing out the best in every management student. By Manisha Arutla MMS - Part 1, Div. - B MMS Page 3 MAKE IN INDIA A session on Make in India was arranged for MMS students in M501 on 10th of October 2015 where Mr. Deepak Pathare enlightened students on what ‘Make in India’ is all about. Before starting the session, he sang the National Anthem along with students to spread positivity around and create patriotic feeling among everybody. He then started the session by giving figures of Imports and Exports, and said that, “Make in India is all about lowering Imports and Increasing Exports.”. Mr. Deepak Pathare explained this concept of Import and Export with a simple example of McDonalds’s Meal which hardly costs them 30/- to 40/- rupees and they sell it to the consumer at 90/- to 100/- rupees earning a profit of around 60/- rupees per meal approximately. This they sell it daily to millions of customers in hundreds of outlets earning a profit of 365/- crores in a year and this money instead of staying in India goes to their headquarters in United States of America (US), draining some part of India’s wealth outside India which could have been used by Indians otherwise. According to him this is what should be stopped. Make in India is making India rich and no other country. It is to develop manufacturing in India so that money comes to India and stays in India. This can be done by creating strong factors such as skilled labour, availability of resources, building strong values and by overcoming the weak points such as lack of technology, research & development and lack of consistency. This will ultimately help India to grow strong. He ended the inspiring session by suggesting the students that “Change your habits to make India what it actually deserves to be”, and that, “to Make in India it is necessary to be Made in India.” By Mansi Chandan MMS – Part 1, Div. – B INTERCOLLEGIATE DEBATE At Vidyalankar Institute of Technology every day is a new learning experience and a new opportunity. One such opportunity where the students could showcase their communication skills came in the form of an invitation from BSE Institute Limited. BSE Institute had organized inter college debate competition on 26th October, 2015 and the topic was “Make in India Initiative: Is the SME sector ready to Lead?”. After some brainstorming the faculty shortlisted two teams to participate in the event and to talk ‘For’ and ‘Against’ the given topic. As per the rules each team consisted of 2 members and a time of 5 minutes was allotted wherein each member had two minutes to put forth his/her points and the last one minute was reserved for rebuttal. The day of the event arrived, after all the hush and rush the VIT team reached the magnificent BSE Complex at Dalal Street. The auditorium on 18th floor was packed with different teams representing various colleges such as Jai Hind, SIES, St. Xaviers, Lala Lajpat Rai, and many more. The event was judged by Mr. Vinod Nair (Head-Academics & Product Development, BSE Institute Limited) and Mr. Ambarish Datta (Managing Director & CEO, BSE Institute Limited). The topic “Make in India Initiative: Is the SME sector ready to Lead?” was very interesting and the challenging task was to summarize all the facts and figures of such a vivid topic in just four minutes. All the teams were well competent and all the sessions of debate were very informative and mind boggling. As every competition gives a winner, so did this debate competition too but here all the teams were winners as each and every one learnt to express their perspective and ideas effectively. It was a great learning experience. R. Doongaji in the auditorium, which was attended by all MMS Students (Seniors and Juniors), Faculties of MMS Department and few invitees from the Engineering and VSIT college. They also called a guest speaker, Mr. B K Soni, who is working in the area of destroying E-Waste. Mr. B. K. Soni, AICWA, is a first generation entrepreneur who founded ‘Eco Recycling Ltd.’ in 1994, a company which is listed on the BSE since 1995. The session started with felicitation of our guest speaker, Mr. B. K. Soni by Dr. S. C. Deshpande, followed by speeches from Mr. Doongaji, Prof. Ankush Sharma, and Dr. S. C. Deshpande. The session proceeded with the screening of a 90 minute film on the subject, “An Inconvenient Truth”, by Al Gore who was the Vice president of USA during the Clinton era. This short film threw light on the journey of Earth and what horrific changes mankind has brought about in the world. It informed the audience about how the growing population and pollution worried Al Gore, showing his journey as he realized the disastrous consequences life on Earth would face in the near future if man continues to live in the same manner. In the film, he explained that the mankind and the flora & fauna are under various kinds of threats as man, having succumbed to greed, is causing great damage to the globe and its environment due to his irresponsible conduct, and unless something is done immediately to stop the rot, we alone will be responsible for the extinction of our species. And, hence opened everyone’s eyes and made them realize that it is extremely important that we understand what is happening around us and do our little bit that would contribute to the restoration of a healthy planet. After the film sensitized the students towards the harm which we, human beings, are causing to the environment, Mr. B. K. Soni followed it by giving a presentation on the scientific management of electronic waste such as discarded computers, mobile phones, batteries, etc. Mr. B. K. Soni, who is an expert on the subject and is widely recognized as an authority in India in the field of e-waste management & recycling, explained how to discard e-waste effectively. He showed what kind of work he carried out and how discarding e-waste effectively will help to reduce pollution. The movie screening followed by the presentation my Mr. B. K. Soni spread awareness throughout the audience and made a deep impact on the audience’s minds as they left feeling inspired and pumped to do something that’s in their power to save the world. Prahalad batch gave a Tech Review on ‘SOLOSHOT’ which is used for filming a variety of outdoor activities without the pain of someone having to hold a camera for hours. It’s also great for making amateur films and professional documentaries. It consists of a waterproof and shockproof ‘Armband’ worn by the subject and a ‘Base’ tripod to which the camera is attached. The Tech Review is a great initiative taken by Prof. Sudipta , a trend which was started last year. It was a nice experience to learn about this new technology. Students were very active and enthusiastic to know more. In the beginning of SEM 1, we had one week of induction which helped us to know our classmates because of the various activities that were carried out during that week. It also consisted of ‘UDAAN 0.1’ which included our first presentation on PRO KABADDI LEAGUE, which had 15 members each. This experience of one week made all the students feel very involved. The normal lectures after the Induction week were not like graduation lectures, they were more practical and interactive. First semester journey was a big roller coaster ride which had its own highs and lows, but mostly highs. Soon STUDENT COUNCIL for MMS- 2015 was formed, and out of 120 students only 11 deserving students were selected based on their merit and capabilities by the MMS faculty to organize events round the year. There were a lot of presentations carried out during the entire semester in which students learnt to face and conquer their fears. We had Teachers day, Engineers day, and Diwali celebrations, Fresher's party, and literary and sports events. Many guest lectures were conducted and also a movie screening about global warming was showcased which was an eye opener to a number of issues prevailing in the society. A Job fair by the Times Group was also conducted in VIT Campus which was volunteered and assisted by the students and faculty of Vidyalankar. Number of domestic as well as Multinational companies recruited candidates in this job fair. And there was a huge footfall of jobseekers for this event. VIT MMS also created history by making the hashtag ‘#VidyalankarMKTG’ trending at the topmost position in Mumbai on 13th October, 2015. This was made possible by the efforts of a team of 4 students lead by Mr. Jeevan Munde, Prof. Nagesh Pai and Prof. Ankush Sharma along with the help of 120 MMS students who sincerely carried out the activity of tweeting and retweeting meaning marketing posts with the above mentioned hashtag from 9.30 am to 11.30 am. This activity was the biggest learning experience for us as it taught us how brands use social media to market, publicize and promote any products, service or company. The beginning has been splendid and amazing. And the support from faculty has always encouraged us to do better. The journey has begun and now, we are looking forward to the next semester for more interesting learnings. By Shalini Kumari MMS Part - 1, Div. - A MMS Page Page11 5 MMS 20QS Good questioning skills may be the world's most unsung talent. We generally start questions with "how," "what," "when", "where," or "why". Well, how many times have you begun a question with "Does it…?" or "Can it...?". The Literary Council of the MMS Department, Vidyalankar Institute of Technology, Wadala organized an event “20Qs” on 28th of October, 2015 to develop student’s intellectual capability and ability to frame questions & manage time. The Literary Secretary, Ms Shubhra Sewalikar, started the event with a welcome speech, followed by felicitating judges Prof. Smita Mukherjee and Prof. Mansi Phatak with bouquets. The game of asking questions started by giving instructions to be followed in the game. There were 6 teams with 4 participants per team from the first year students of the MMS Department, and the game had 3 rounds. Each team at a time was called on stage, to play the game. A person from each team, picked a chit from a pool of chits and the person had to keep quiet for the questions to pour in. The team member of the respective teams had to guess what that word was by asking only 20 Questions. The twist in the game was that nobody could ask ‘WH’ questions. This twist made it tough for participants to think and form questions. The game had a time limit of 8 minutes in which a person from a team had to pick as many chits as they could. The event captivated the audience and made them sit with curiosity to know the answer of questions asked by participants. With every round, 2 teams were eliminated. The final round was a real challenge for both qualifying teams as they were given only 4minutes to guess the word. Both teams were not able to guess the respective words but due to highest score in round 1 and round 2, Team 2 was the winner for ‘20Qs’. The event came to an end by felicitating winners with bookmarks and a thank you speech by Ms. Shubhra Sewalikar. It was very challenging and a good learning experience not only for the participants but also for the audience.
