42 Years of Great Success
The Gary Center has been open for 42
years and I am very proud of all of the
work they do there. All of the programs are
wonderful because each one of them has a
special meaning and important purpose. I
am extremely satisfied with The Gary
Center because it is a part of me and it is a
part of my son, who I named the center
after. The Gary Center helps people better
their lives through counseling, dental care
and a food distribution program.
I am looking towards a bigger and more
vibrant Gary Center in 2013. I am happy
that we opened up SACS on 17th Street
(Substance Abuse Counseling Systems)
because we are expanding to a different
area in the county and doing a great job.
Allen Stafford, Founder of The Gary Center
I am very proud of our Executive Director, Martha. She is a great leader. The staff, interns, trainees and
volunteers at The Gary Center are all wonderful. They make a big difference in the work we do.
The Gary Center has done a lot of fundraising over the years; we have had dinner dances, rummage sales
and food booths. All fundraising that goes on is phenomenal, especially the golf tournament. Tim Domis,
our chairman, is wonderful and does a great job in helping the tournament be the success it has been.
I am happy to know John Rees, the center’s Board President, he is a great guy and has done an outstanding
job. I look forward to many more years of continued good work from The Gary Center.
New Beginnings in 2013 and Highlights of 2012
In 2013 we are expecting growth and increase in the strength of our organization. As we leave 2012 behind
it is always rewarding to look back at all of the progress we made:
● Implementation of Electronic Health
Records in our Dental Clinic
 Installation of Smart Boards at SACS on 17th Street
and at The Gary Center for group instruction
 Enhancement of our website and Facebook page
 New Women’s Counseling Support Group
 Expansion of our counseling & psychiatric program
through increased collaboration with other agencies
throughout Orange County
 New partnership with the Lowell School District
 New trainees, interns and volunteers at The Gary
Center & SACS on 17th Street
 Continued to have the support and advocacy of
The Gary’s Guild & Board of Directors

Welcome Mark Phillipi from State Farm Insurance
to The Gary Center’s Board of Directors
My name is Mark Phillipi and I am very excited to join The Gary Center’s
Board of Directors. My experience with The Gary Center goes back to 1985
when I first established my business in La Habra as a State Farm Insurance
Agent.
Providing professional insurance services to my clients has been my focus
for the last 27 years. My career as an agent continues to offer many
opportunities to become more involved with the local community, including
its residents and businesses.
Volunteerism is very important to me. I recently completed 6 years serving
on the council at Messiah Lutheran Church. As president of the council I was
most interested in building consensus of the members and working toward
positive and effective management skills. As a leader within my church I have
learned valuable experiences with non-profit programs. It is my hope to bring
these acquired skills and knowledge to The Gary Center.
On a personal note, my wife Nancy and I have been married for 28 years.
We met at U.C.L.A. where I earned my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political
Science. In my spare time I enjoy playing softball, attending sporting events
and spending time with my family. I look forward to getting to know new
friends as I join this most worthy program.

‘Sandra,’ was 39 years old when she came into The Gary Center for counseling services due to having symptoms of
depression. She was not able to sleep well, ate too much, was gaining weight, felt withdrawn and was feeling worthless
and hopeless.
During her intake session, the counselor asked many questions about her symptoms and discovered Sandra was
living with a physically and emotionally abusive husband. It was suggested that the husband come in for counseling as
well, but he never did.
As she worked on her issues and began to start to take better care for herself, her husband saw changes and abused
her more. She realized she needed to get away. One day, after her husband went to work, she left with her three
children to a shelter for abused women and children.
She continued to come to The Gary Center for her counseling services and brought her children in for therapy.
Sandra and her children began to work on improving the communication and interaction between family members and
learned about the cycle of abuse. Her children learned through family counseling healthy and positive ways to interact
and communicate with each other.
