It’s not what you say that ma ers; it’s what people hear. Just because you said it doesn’t mean they heard it. Just because you wrote it doesn’t mean they read it. Be sure your message is re‐ ceived and understood. 2. There are lots of things you don’t know and lots of people who hope you don’t find out. The boss rarely hears the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. You’ve got to walk around, look around, listen, and ask direct ques‐ ons. 3. Hire for character, train for skills. Integrity, re‐ sponsibility, and the ability to work with others are vital competencies. You’ve got to screen out or weed out people you can’t believe or rely on or who are toxic to the team. 4. Se ling for warm bodies turns one problem into two. You s ll have to get someone who’s right for the job, but first you have to deal with and remove the wrong person. If you can’t find the me to do it right, when will you find the me to do it over? 5. What you allow, you encourage. If you don’t en‐ force your values and rules, they’re not your val‐ ues and they’re not rules. 6. Doing nothing is doing something. Indecision and inac on cause as much harm as poor deci‐ sions. Indecisiveness is incompetence. 7. It’s all about rela onships. Your most important job is to get the most out of the people who work with you. You’ve got to be ready to be a boss, mo vator, mentor, counselor, disciplinari‐ an, or friend. This is Michael Josephson reminding you that character counts. Top 5 New Mexico business‐news outlet Al‐ buquerque Business First changed up its ranking of New Mexico chambers of com‐ merce in 2014 by reviewing the total reve‐ nue and net income from their publicly available Form 990 tax returns. Although that translated to the Hobbs Chamber si ng at No. 15, Hobbs Chamber execu ve Grant Taylor welcomed this new way of comparing chambers. Since the list was released, Taylor has pointed out that three chambers in neigh‐ boring communi es — all with smaller popula ons and fewer businesses— made the Top 5. We have learned from Carlsbad, Artesia and Clovis that they entrust their chambers with most—if not all—lodgers tax proceeds.. Albuquerque Business First invited Hobbs Chamber execu ve Grant Taylor to offer input on the 2015 list, and Hobbs Chamber staff did preliminary research of 2013 returns to suggest lis ng total reve‐ nue and membership dues. “Since we chambers must be member‐ ship organiza ons, and since we must demonstrate a meaningful extent of mem‐ bership support, according to the IRS,” Taylor said, “I thought it would be benefi‐ cial to exhibit reported membership dues. Some of the results for chambers in neighboring communi es and communi‐ es of similar sizes and industries are listed in the lower le table. 400 N Marland Blvd Hobbs, New Mexico 88240 hobbschamber.org Urge your vendors to join the Hobbs Chamber!
