JULY 2015 1550 1st Street North, Willmar, MN 56201 Executive Director Message This Fourth of July we might find ourselves barbecuing, congregating with loved ones and enjoying our precious free time. But July Fourth is also a time to step back, take stock and appreciate the deep freedoms we enjoy every day. Mark your calendars for Thursday, August 20th for an Open House that will be held here at Copperleaf. We are planning on having a 50’s themed grill out. We are still in the planning stages, but certainly it will be a great time! We are currently narrowing down who our entertainment will be for the evening. Stay tuned for more details. Vacations, whether they are short, long, close or far away, provide everyone an opportunity to get out of their typical routine and look at the world in a new and different way. We also usually make many memories with our loved ones that can make us either cry or laugh depending on the circumstances during the trip. Many of us are familiar with the Chevy Chase movie; National Lampoons European Vacation. Many of us can connect with at least one or all of the characters throughout this crazy journey of a family trip they have. So this month we’ll be offering some new and different opportunities to bring in some more sun shine and happiness to Copperleaf. Some of these include having a World Map on display in the Dining Room and asking each member of the Copperleaf family to use a thumb tack to pin point the location of a favorite vacation. If people are willing to bring pictures and or memorabilia from these trips, then everyone can share in the fun of seeing why your vacation was so memorable. We’ll be having a Hula-Hoop contest before lunch with anyone willing to try. We’ll be using the large colorful swim noodles to play a fun balloon game. Also, to enliven our taste buds, we’ll be enjoying some tasty S’mores and special tropical drinks that many have enjoyed while away from home. For music this month, we’ll have Lyle Nelson playing some of our familiar tunes that are patriotic and reflective of July 4. Judy and Ron Hedke will also be sharing music while we have our Vacation themed Happy Hour on Friday, July 17 at 3 pm in the Grand Loft. Family and friends of Copperleaf—please come and join us for this special time of fun and reminiscing. For crafts, we’ll be doing some sand art projects and dry pasta art works with prizes going to the art pieces selected by the Copperleaf family. We look forward to seeing you around our neck of the woods here at Copperleaf! Regina Hatzinger Activities Director Health news Happy Birthday America! It is hard to believe that 2015 is half over already and this month we are celebrating July 4th! Summer is full of lots of celebrations. Graduations, weddings, family gatherings at the lake, camping, fishing, backyard grill outs and picnics. While we are busy running around and planning all these fun activities, we sometimes get so focused on our tasks that we sometimes forget about protecting our skin from the sun. According to America Cancer Society.org (4/2015), “Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. About 3.5 million cases of basal and squamous cell skin cancer are diagnosed in this country each year. Melanoma, a more dangerous type of skin cancer, will account for more than 73,000 cases of skin cancer in 2015.” Risk factors for skin cancer include: May 18th – May 22nd we had a staff appreciation week here at Copperleaf! Monday was Jungle Day filled with lots of animals prints all around! Tuesday we showed our American pride and played a game called “Minute to Win It”! Wednesday residents and staff wore their camouflage and had some tasty tacos in a bag. Thursday everyone lounged around in their pajamas all day and had some pop and popcorn! On the bright sun shiny Friday residents and staff dressed in their bright/neon colors! A potluck was had by the staff. Memory Care had oh so much fun with a cotton ball game. The need to be useful, to care for oneself and others, and to have self-esteem boosted is just a few of these needs. For a resident in Memory Care, the simple task of mixing and making muffins for the other residents for a snack made her feel needed, and allowed her to have her self-esteem boosted when everyone raved about how delicious the muffins were! Chrissy Elton Memory Care Coordinator Culinary Corner This colorful traditional salad is one of my favorites. It’s fun to eat because of its crunchy texture and the raisins give a slightly sweet flavor. Plus, it’s easy to prepare.
