Needless to say, quality journalism, stunning photography and cutting-edge design are always at the forefront of beyond’s philosophy along with eye-catching and effective advertising campaigns. We pride ourselves on our close working relationships with businesses of all shapes and sizes, listening to and understanding their advertising requirements and ensuring their message is delivered as successfully as possible. At the same time, our growing reputation within the industry has attracted exclusive celebrity interviews with some of the biggest names in entertainment, sport and business and helped beyond become such a recognisable and popular publication. THE LIFE OF RILEY Menston star Sam Riley on his rise to Hollywood fame. by Mark Bowness edition 10 32 43 beyond leeds stevengerrard “It is for that reason players need to raise their game and realise just how important they are in the lives of so many youngsters.” And the midfield maestro also had a word of encouragement for every Leeds fan when he revealed how he would love to see the beleaguered Yorkshire club back in the big time. He said: “It would be great to see a club like Leeds back in the top flight. They are a Premiership outfit and with their fan base and tradition, it is sad to see where they are now. “When you think how strong they were and the players they had a few years ago it makes you realise how small the gap is between success and failure. Hopefully though they will soon be back and challenging for things once again.” Gerrard also gave perhaps the biggest indication yet as to where his footballing future lies after announcing he has just bought three luxury penthouse apartments in the heart of Liverpool. The player, who was born and bred in the city, has followed the route of fellow ex Anfield legends Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen and Steve McManaman and jumped on the property bandwagon. To add to the luxury mansion in Formby which he shares with wife Alex and their two young daughters, he has snapped up three palatial pads in the city’s stunning new Mann Island development plus a penthouse apartment in the exclusive French ski resort of Laschappe. It is a portfolio which shows just how committed Gerrard is to ensuring his family have a secure financial future and an indication of just how at home he is in Liverpool. Speaking of his move up the property ladder Gerrard said: “While we earn fantastic money, the career of a footballer is very short and so I wanted to make sure my family are financially secure in years to come. “Property is something I have looked at before and when I saw the stunning development at Mann Island I was very impressed.” And one look around the spectacular three bedroom penthouse apartments he has snapped up and it is not hard to see why. Completely new, distinctive and stunningly original, the Mann Island residential complex comprises of 376 one, two and three bedroom apartments and is destined to become the epitome of city living at its very best. Ranging in price from £125,000 up to £1.5 million, they occupy a unique waterside location next to the shops, bars, and tourist attractions of the Victoria and Albert Dock stevengerrard “IT WOULD BE GREAT TO SEE A CLUB LIKE LEEDS BACK IN THE TOP FLIGHT, THEY ARE A PREMIERSHIP OUTFIT AND WITH THEIR FAN BASE AND TRADITION IT IS SAD TO SEE WHERE THEY ARE NOW.” with views spanning across the city. It is the latest and most impressive addition to a Liverpool skyline that was once dominated by tenement blocks and docks but is now awash with investment. Currently revelling in its title of European City of Culture, Liverpool has recently been described as a world in one city, and it’s easy to see why. Along with its cosmopolitan shops, bars and restaurants, Liverpool’s rich heritage and impressive selection of landmarks and galleries regularly attract the attention of visitors from across the globe. The Walker Art Gallery and Tate Liverpool are among the country’s top cultural attractions. It is something not lost on Gerrard. He said: “Liverpool is really enjoying a boom at the moment and you just have to walk about to see the prosperity of the city. “The shops, restaurants and developments in the centre are fantastic and there is nowhere else I want to be, I love the city and wanted to make sure I have a place in the centre as we spend so much time here.” As for the luxury penthouse in the French Alps, Gerrard says it will be a while before he’ll be able to make the most of it as he is not allowed to ski for risk of getting injured. He said: “Again that is a long term investment and something in years to come we’re really looking forward to enjoying as a family. “Unfortunately now my playing insurance prevents me from actively skiing but hopefully when I hang up my boots we’ll be able to get the most out of that property.” And speaking of relaxing away from the game, Gerrard and his fellow team-mates are resigned to doing just that this summer following England’s failure to qualify for the 2008 European Championships. He said; “Of course it will be incredibly hard to watch knowing we could have been there but we just have to move on and with Fabio 33 Capello now in charge we have a real chance to move forward.” And he believes with the arrival of the Italian coach, the future is looking bright for England. He added: “It is an exciting time for everybody. He has brought a whole new direction to the game and although it will take time to settle in I’m convinced he will take us to the next level.” ■ Vivienne Westwood 09 ‘‘ ‘‘ I S S U E 29 Forget New York, it is old York that now has the very height of fashion at its fingertips. The UK’s greatest and most controversial fashion icon Vivienne Westwood has brought her creative vision to the city. And in an exclusive interview with beyond york, the Queen of Fashion tells Mark Bowness why she is delighted to be bringing her passion for fashion back to her northern roots. A s fashion’s grande dame and one of our most brilliant eccentrics, there is nothing Vivienne Westwood doesn’t know about the cut and thrust of her industry. She is the woman who re-wrote the rules of taste, an original and a genius who has done more to inspire mainstream style and fellow designers than any of her peers. So when she chooses a location to house her latest designs, the fashion world sits up and takes note. Little wonder then that all eyes are suddenly on York with the arrival of her stunning new 2,000 sq ft threelevel Hervia boutique in the heart of the city. Home to names including the lauded Anglomania range, Gold Label, Red Label, MAN menswear, jewellery and the full range of Vivienne Westwood accessories, the opulent boutique is suitably decorated with Vivienne’s trademark Orbs and dramatically oversized imagery. And in an exclusive interview with beyond york, the 67-year-old who was recently rated one of the six most important designers of the 20th century has revealed her love for the city; why she chose York for her latest boutique; her affinity with the north and how the fashion world has changed since she fi rst exploded on to the scene over 30 years ago. She said: “I am absolutely thrilled that my clothes will now be available and have such a big presence in this beautiful city. “York is close to where I was born. As a northern girl growing up in a northern village, you always had a thirst for something exciting and new and I think this is what my clothes offer. “My customers are the best ambassadors for my clotheswhen people wear them, they feel it gives them an edge and that is my aim. “I think to dress well in an age of conformity where everyone looks so poor and sad is culturally very important – clothes should help, not hide personal expression. I am sure York will embrace this.” Her polite and ladylike demeanour betrays a northern accent as thick as a dry stone wall and the self-taught daughter of a Derbyshire sausage-maker has certainly come a long way since her early days as a primary school teacher or dispensing sexual fetish gear to a generation of pimpled rebels from the emporium she ran with Malcolm McLaren. Westwood’s journey into the fashion world got underway after she spilt from her fi rst husband and found a new life with McLaren, who later became manager of the Sex Pistols. In the 70s, the couple’s boutique on London’s Kings Road became the flagship store of the punk movement, where Westwood designed and sold the items that would become synonymous with punk – bondage trousers, provocative tee-shirts, safety-pinned jackets. / NORTH YORKSHIRE MOORS HAWES LEYBURN PICKERING HELMSLEY THIRSK YORKSHIRE DALES INGLETON RIPON WHERE WE GO GRASSINGTON KNARESBOROUGH HARROGATE Aimed at an affluent readership of 25-50 year-olds, beyond is a quality quarterly publication with a print run of 25,000 meaning every issue is read by over 100,000 potential customers.
