emphasis on function, program, aesthetics, experience, throughput, and patient outcomes. VCBO has
developed a depth of experience in LEAN, both in the planning and design of medical spaces as well as in
the project management and delivery of projects. VCBO approach to LEAN is informed by a commitment
to continuous process improvement and waste reduction. In a healthcare setting, we are also motivated by
the needs of the patient with the goal of providing the highest quality care while reducing costs. We have
VCBO healthcare
The diversity of the firm’s work is one of its greatest assets. Over the past three decades, VCBO
Architecture has gained significant expertise in a variety of project sizes and scope ranging from $100,000
remodeling projects to $65,000,000 healthcare projects. VCBO implements several six sigma processes
into healthcare design. Pulling together the team through the LEAN method increases patient and staff
quality, advances the design process, and ultimately drives towards a more efficient building.
experienced firsthand how incorporating these principles into the design of healthcare facilities can have a
positive impact on productivity, cost, quality, and timely delivery of services.
VCBO design approach
Our passion for designing excellent Healthcare projects is rooted in our knowledge that good architecture
is transformative, that creating healing environments positively effects the lives and health of patients,
families, staff, and physicians. Flexibility in healthcare is the concept of being able to use spaces for more
than a single function, on both a daily basis and throughout the life of the facility. We extrapolate pertinent
information and propose options based on information gathered. Select options are test-fitted via work
sessions, mockups, rapid prototypes, 3D modeling and physical models to ensure they meet the original
goals of the project. Spaces are combined into one function or split so various specialties can make
better use of them. Careful location of shelled spaces is critical to building flexibility. It can be difficult
to accurately predict which departments may experience the most growth over time and future needs
for shelled spaces. However, careful planning assisted by a modular system, increases the likelihood of
successfully meeting both current and future needs. Intelligent interior design decisions also enhance
flexibility of space. We work diligently to use furnishings, materials, textures and colors that create as
much flexible use of the space as possible.
The new Salt Lake Clinic is a replacement facility for an existing building which remained operational during the
entire construction process. The new project consists of an underground parking structure, construction of
the new 130,000 S.F. clinic, demolition of the existing facility, and the creation of a community park and healing
garden. This facility contains approximately 22 medical specialties and includes a Pharmacy, Instacare, fullservice Lab, Infusion, complex Imaging modalities, Home Health, Food Service, and LiVeWell.

The renovation of Logan Regional Hospital consists of three separate parts: interior demolition and remodeling
of sections of the hospital, remodeling of the existing Budge Clinic, and the addition of a 105,000 S.F. clinic
that includes new main hospital entries. VCBO worked early in the design phase to master plan the entire site
plan for future development. This plan helped to establish the best location for the new facility. LEAN design
processes were used specifically in the clinic areas. Care givers from all the 20 specialties located in the Budge
clinic, along with administrators and designers were involved from the beginning to help determine layouts,
adjacencies, and all important features in the clinic. An on-stage | off-stage suite layout scheme was settled
upon for care team and exams and all unnecessary building elements were ‘LEANed’ out of the building to
make a very efficient design.
The hospital portion of the project houses a new Physical Therapy Suite for adults and children that include
three therapy pools, an Audiology Suite, Infusion Suite, a blood draw area, Plastics Suite, and general hospital
admissions area. The clinic houses an Imaging area with Radiology, CT Scan, Dexa, and Ultrasound, Pediatrics,
Orthopedics, Dermatology, Podiatry, Internal Medicine, a Gastroenterology Surgical Suite, a future Operating
Room Suite, and many other specialties. The Pharmacy in the existing clinic space was completely remodeled.

Sited in the upscale resort town of Park City, Utah, which is home to the US Ski Team and famous for skiing and
all types of other year-round outdoor activities, this facility serves an international clientele. The architecture
is reminiscent of the surrounding mountains and features local stone, rough mountain timbers, fireplaces, and
has a resort ambiance instead of the usual hospital environment. The food service is managed by a worldclass chef and the café serves patients, staff, and locals.
This project, currently in the design phase, includes an 82,000 square foot addition, remodeling to the existing
hospital, and master planning for future expansion. One of the early aspects of the project is programming
verification and modifications. A full LEAN exercise is currently underway as part of the design process.
Scheduled are five Integrated Design Events (IDE) at which designers, administrators, maintenance, and IT
personnel, along with caregivers at all levels participate to establish goals and design parameters and metrics.
The process will facilitate a design that is efficient and effective in delivering world class care for their world
class patients.

simulation lab
The Taylor Health Science Building is a 3-story, mixed-use facility that contains several health sciences
departments including administration, nursing, medical radiology, respiratory therapy, dental sciences, surgical
technology, physical therapy, academic shared space, a 150 person lecture hall, a 65 person lecture hall, and
student lounges. The lobby offers spectacular views while the attached staircase links all levels of the facility
together vertically. Usable outdoor space was integrated into the facility. An entry courtyard to the sunny south
and a second courtyard on the shaded north have been implemented into the design to offer more of a variety
of student gathering spaces within the site. Integrated audio/visual technology in the facility is state-of-the-art
and allows for modern health science instruction.

central utah clinic
Central Utah Clinic, conveniently located in heart of American Fork, offers medical services to meet a range
of healthcare needs. The two-story 80,000 square foot medical clinic. provides oncology, gastroenterology,
cardiology, respiratory therapist, internal medicine, dialysis laboratory, radiology and a surgical center. The clinic
was master planned for an addition of a 30,000 square foot expansion that would have limited interruption to
daily business practice as the clinic grows
offices (for health care clients)
VCBO has designed many office type projects for its healthcare clients. These have been new multi-story
facilities, large interior renovations, small tenant designs, and corporate remodels. They also include IT projects
which have required flexible and collaborative spaces along with very technical laboratory and equipment
testing areas. We employ LEAN design processes that are critical to assure workable spaces that promote a
healthy environment and lead the market in sustainability.
selecthealth
Select Health features executive offices, conference rooms, 800 workstations, training rooms, fitness
center, and two auditoriums. The plaza has been designed with water features, benches, greenery,
and full xeriscaping. The “column-free” floor plan design allows for flexibility of interior spaces as well
as improved sight lines. High ceilings add to the open ambiance as do the floor-to-ceiling windows. The
building’s glazed, fritted low-e glass is energy efficient while optimizing daylighting. Select Health was
designed and certified as a LEED silver project.
parkside office complex
Intermountain Healthcare needed additional office space for a growing I.T. department. VCBO was
asked to take an existing office building that they had purchased and transform it into a collaborative
workplace environment that emphasizes idea sharing and supports a vibrant and innovative work
environment.
The solution provides an office plan that features a central avenue, workspaces occur to either side of
the avenue in neighborhoods. Each neighborhood has one or more collaboration areas that allow for
casual gatherings or small meetings. Vertical circulation occurs at either end of the avenue and at its
center. A cafe space is also included which doubles as a collaboration area, and on the second floor
a HUB area focuses only on touch down workspaces. The interior finishes and artwork emphasize an
active, vibrant and healthy lifestyle focused around the outdoor activities available in the mountain west.
transformation lab
The transformation lab is home to 40 employees and approximately 20,000 square feet. The design of the
building was centered on a collaborative work environment, including a briefing center where teams can meet
and talk about ideas, as well as a large, open warehouse space where employees can test out ideas and do
demonstrations. The building’s function was based on rapid technology advancements, and a place that will
house healthcare development and prototyping.
