RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - City
employees are looking for this
year’s scholarship recipient! The
2016 Community Pride Scholarship
is open to graduating 2016 high
school seniors who live within the
City limits of Rancho Cordova.
Last year, the City of Rancho
Cordova helped to make Puspita
Hutajulu’s college dreams come
true by awarding her a $500 scholarship. The Cordova High graduate
came highly recommended by her
peers for outstanding leadership
and a passion for serving her
community.
“The Community Pride
Scholarship is a great way for
the City to give back to Rancho
Cordova’s graduating students,”
said Puspita, “and it can help in so
many areas. Since it is given out
like cash, you can use it to help pay
for a new laptop or iPad, or if you
don’t need new technology, you can
always send it to the school to be
used to pay for tuition or books.”
To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must have a
minimum 3.0 GPA, submit a
700-word essay, letters of recommendation, and an application
by 5 p.m. on Monday, April 4th,
2016. Applications are available
online at cityofranchocordova.org/
scholarship.
The Community Pride
Scholarship program was established in 2009 to show City
employees’ support of youth and
education in Rancho Cordova. For

it was founded in 1987
by a group of concerned
Rancho Cordovans.
The Food Locker has

meals to feed 500,000
hungry families and 1.7

our community. None
of this would have been
possible without a sturdy
truck to pick up food
donations and deliver
them to those in need.
Now, the Food Locker

donations, they are looking for generous persons,
organizations, and businesses to pitch in to help
them reach their $40,000
fundraising goal.
“Our clients come
from all walks of life—
unemployed or between
jobs, seniors, the homeless, working poor, or
simply those having bad
luck,” said Founder Walt
Little. “Big-hearted volunteers and donors have
always pitched in to
make the food locker the
best it can be in Rancho

Family History Fans Find
Help in Search of Roots
Story by Margaret Snider
RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) -
This year’s RootsTech Family
Discovery Day on March 5th
provided genealogy and family
history aficionados the opportunity to network with others
and to learn about many related
subjects.
The event, put on by The
Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints, offered more
than ten instructors and more
than a dozen classes on various topics including Tips and
Tricks for Successful Research,
Introduction to FamilySearch,
Creating Life Stories through
Pictures, and Personal Ancestral
File on Steroids – Ancestral
Quest. Event coordinator Allan
Bosch of Rancho Cordova said
the workshop was a family
friendly event with something
for all ages, and classes were
scaled from beginner to expert.
A course in Latin American
research was offered, taught in
Spanish.
Snacks and refreshments were
provided, as well. “But the greatest enjoyment comes through
discovering family relationships
that had been lost, both living
and deceased,” Bosch said.
A difference in this year’s
workshop was a special focus
for youth. “After the last one,
we decided we didn’t really have
engaging classes for the youth,”
said Wayne Jensen, first counselor in the presidency of the
Sacramento Cordova Stake of
the LDS church. “They kind of
felt like they were in another
classroom situation, almost
attending school on a Saturday.
We didn’t want that necessarily
to be their experience.”
One thing the youth have
been especially good at is in
helping with indexing. This
FamilySearch project began
in 2006 with the purpose of
creating searchable digital
indexes from scanned images
Students attending the RootsTech Family Discovery Day on March 5 work
on the FamilySearch project indexing names from an online collection of
millions of scanned historical documents. Photo by Margaret Snider
of historical documents. The
documents are drawn primarily from a collection of 2.4
million rolls of microfilm containing photographic images of
historical documents from 110
countries and principalities:
census records, birth and death
certificates, marriage licenses,
military, property, and other vital
records maintained by local,
state, and national governments.
The indexers, in this case the
young men and women, put the
data from the documents into an
online format in FamilySearch
so that they can be more readily
found by researchers.
Katrina Huhtala, 14, of
Rancho Cordova was one of
those doing indexing. She said
she got started at church last
year when the youth received a
challenge—whoever indexed the
most names in three months got
a prize. She did 1,000 names and
won first place.
“That got me interested,”
Huhtala said. “It was fun to do
it in competition.” She enjoyed
indexing the draft records from
World War II, because there was
a lot of personal information
included. “You get to see, oh,
they have blond hair and blue
eyes, they have a scar on their
left wrist, all about them—where
they came from, and where they
lived. “I think that’s pretty cool
that you get to hear their life
story.”
Family history is a growing
field that will be enhanced and
improved over time, according
to Josh Arnold, family history
consultant. “One of the most
fun things is that it’s addictive,”
Arnold said. “The technology
is getting so much bigger, it’s
hard to keep up…it could be on
your handy-dandy phone even,
where you can do family history
research. It’s very interactive.”
Arnold taught a workshop class
on mobile family history apps,
and also offers family history
help from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.,
Tuesdays and Wednesdays at
the LDS church meetinghouse,
2400 Cordova Lane in Rancho
Cordova.
There are wonderful resources
around the Sacramento area,
Jensen said. The Sacramento
FamilySearch Library, at 2746
Eastern Ave in Sacramento is
open Monday through Friday
and every second Saturday. See
www.sacfamilysearchlibrary.
org/

the FamilySearch indexing project, go to www.FamilySearch.

Andy Warhol: Portraits
Now at the Crocker Art Museum
SACRAMENTO REGION, CA (MPG) - The status sym-
bol of the disco era was the commissioned
Warhol portrait. Opening in March 2016 at the
Crocker Art Museum, “Andy Warhol: Portraits”
features more than 160 works exploring the
development of the artist’s iconic portrayal of the
famous or wealthy. Included are Polaroids, fashion sketches, photo-booth film strips, and more.
Visitors will also have the interactive opportunity
to create their own Warhol Screen Test using a
1960s film camera outfitted for the digital era.
“Andy Warhol: Portraits” spans Warhol’s lifelong preoccupation with self-portraits in addition
to images of the 20th-century luminaries who
eagerly sat for him. Featured in this career survey
are fashion scion Yves Saint Laurent, playwright
Tennessee Williams, Pulitzer-Prize winner
Truman Capote, and artists Keith Haring, Robert
Mapplethorpe, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Actors
Judy Garland, Jane Fonda, and Sylvester Stallone
epitomize Warhol’s fascination with Hollywood
and filmmaking.
“Celebrity fascination never goes out of
style. It evolves with us generation by generation, through the transformation of media,” said
Crocker Curator Diana L. Daniels. “Andy Warhol
was an original in making us lust for what we
already have in abundance: images of sex appeal,
power, and wealth.”
Significantly, it was Warhol’s commissioned
portraits that became synonymous with power
and beauty, wealth and accomplishment. The
basis for Warhol’s paintings was always his
Polaroid photography. After
1968, sitters
posed privately
for dozens of
unique images
taken by the
artist. Only
one from a session resulted in
a final portrait,
and commissioned works
were sold in
pairs. This
practice was
profitable, but
also paradoxical. The dual

presentation effaced the notion of the sitter’s
originality, or being one-of-a-kind.
The exhibition, which runs through June
19th, 2016, will be complemented by additional
Museum programming, including portrait-making workshops for youth in March and April,
live performances, Warhol-inspired parties, a
symposium, and more. The Crocker is the only
California venue for this career survey, which
was organized by The Andy Warhol Museum,
one of the four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh.
The Crocker Art Museum was the first art
museum in the Western U.S. and is one of
the leading art museums in California today.
Established in 1885, the Museum features one
of the country’s finest collections of Californian
art, exceptional holdings of master drawings,
a comprehensive collection of international
ceramics, as well as European, Asian, African,
and Oceanic art. The Crocker is located at 216
O Street in downtown Sacramento. Museum
hours are 10 a.m.–5 p.m., Tuesday–Sunday; 10
a.m.–9 p.m., Thursdays. Every third Sunday of
the month is “Pay What You Wish Sunday” sponsored by Western Health Advantage. For more
information, call (916) 808-7000 or visit crockerartmuseum.org.

SACRAMENTO REGION, CA (MPG) -
SaveCalifornia.com invites you to
join national Christian leader Franklin
Graham in Sacramento, Thursday, March
31st, for an important election-year rally
supporting faith, family, and freedom.
As our nation hangs in the balance, the
“Decision America Tour” is your opportunity to unite and take a public stand for
Godly, moral values and for your constitutional freedoms. It’s a time to pray
for God to do what only He can do, and
a time for you to commit to what He’s
called you to do.
The vision: “Franklin Graham is traveling to all 50 states in 2016 to hold
prayer rallies, to preach the Gospel, and
to challenge believers to take a stand and
take action. He’ll be urging Christians
to vote, to live out their faith in every
part of their lives, and to pray for our
nation just as Nehemiah cried out to God
to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and
restore hope to His people.”
This totally aligns with the moral,
family values of SaveCalifornia.com—
and you!

Books Here and There and Everywhere
Continued from page 1
young people long after his passing. The
many Seuss books that have been continuously in print have marked the literary
starting point for generations of young
readers.
President Barack Obama declared that
Dr. Seuss’s 112th birthday on March
2nd was to be a day to celebrate “the
power of reading.” In his proclamation,
the president said, “I call upon children,
families, educators, librarians, public officials, and all the people of the
United States to observe this day with
appropriate programs, ceremonies, and
activities.”
In that spirit, Rancho Cordova Vice
Mayor Donald Terry said, “We reach out
and partner with city departments and
council members and involve the community in every possible way.”
According to Cordova Villa
Elementary School Principal Jessica
Hutchinson, “community members and
representatives of the police and fire
departments would serve as readers.”
Having police officers and firefighters read to them would not only expose
the kids to the value of reading, it would
also give them a close-up look at public servants, putting any of them within
touching distance for the first time in
their young lives.
Each child received a book. For some,
it was the only book they owned. They
even got to write their name in it, which
Rancho Cordova Communications
Specialist Ashley Downton said “gives
the children a sense of ownership.” It
was hoped that this small gift would
ignite the children’s curiosity and
inspire them to get into a regular habit of

reading for the rest of their lives.
The books were available in both
English and Spanish and varied in subject by grade level. The books covered
every topic imaginable, ranging from
flowers to facts about California.
Dozens of youngsters in Bussman’s
class also took part in a live KCRA
Channel 3 television broadcast with
reporter Brian Hickey doing the interviews. The group was even visited by
the “Cat In the Hat (AKA: Ed Austin),”
an iconic Dr. Seuss character.
Vice Mayor Terry signed up for a turn
at reading. “There’s no better way to start
the day than reading to kids,” Terry said.
“It’s also a great opportunity for leaders
to see what’s happening in schools.”
Angela Griffin Ankhelyi, in charge of
community outreach, joined the event
to involve the entire city of Rancho
Cordova in the program and to encourage literacy.
As Dr. Seuss wrote those many years
ago, “The more you read, the more
things you will know. The more that you
learn, the more places you’ll go.”
For the room full of eager children,
this day would be the start of their journey.

And Another Thing ...
Welcoming New
Additions to the City
I was working on this column
Monday, and I saw a nice report
on Channel 10 that showed the
inside of our new and beautiful Cordova High School
Performing Arts Theater. This
is a new chapter in the history
of Cordova High. The students
who are lucky enough to go to
Cordova High will have new
memories of their high school.
In the future, when they go over
their Cordova High remembrances, they will see in their
mind’s eye this beautiful theater as an addition to all that was
part of high school. The pictures
in their yearbooks will show not
only the music, shows, friends,
and teachers that were part of
their past, but it will show them,
possibly, on stage with their families in the audience.
The Rancho Cordova River
City Concert Band will perform
there, along with the Rancho
Cordova Civic Light Orchestra.
It will be something that the residents of the City of Rancho
Cordova will also cherish not
only because of what they see
there, but because they are the
people who made the decision to
pay for and create this theater.
Many of the citizens of
Rancho Cordova who voted for
the school bond had children that
went to Cordova High in the past
and have now grown up with
families of their own. Something
that was talked about in the
Channel 10 story, was that it is
the community’s theater as well
as the Cordova High students’
theater. I am looking forward to
seeing a musical performed on
that stage. When our kids were
going to Cordova High, they
performed musicals in the Little
Theater. That was then, and
this is now! The Cordova High
School Performing Arts Theater
grand opening was on Thursday
evening, and I hope everyone
will see it very soon.
Over the last eight or nine
days, we have been given the
rainy and stormy weather that
we were hoping for. The weather
reporter on T.V. said that the
Sacramento region is only
two-tenths of an inch from the
average amount of rain. Building
the Mather Veterans Village
apartments has been done faster
because of the dry weather, and
building the Performing Arts
Theater has been done faster
for the same reason. But I think
we can all be very thankful we
have gotten through the drought
thus far. And we’ve been able to
get the buildings completed that
will mean so much to so many
people. We’ve been given more
rain than many people thought
we would receive. We are only
halfway through the month of
March, and we still have the
rest of the rainy season to go
through, but I think the rain this
year will leave us much better
off than we have been for the last
four years. We will continue to
move forward into the future of
Rancho Cordova together, and
we are able to do that because
we have been through some
pretty rough times in the past,
and look where we are now.
Speaking of the past, the
Rancho Cordova Historical
Society has been working very
hard gathering years of copies
of the Grapevine Independent,
and they will be putting them
online soon for everyone to see.
Maybe you will be able to find
something that happened to your
family because it was in the
paper, and you have been trying
to find it for a long time. I am
looking forward to being able
to see our past in our local paper
The Grapevine Independent.

There could be lots of reasons
Martin´ chose to become the
“crossing sergeant.”
Oh, there have been rumors
that she may give Martin´ a hard
time at home, but you know how
rumors are.
Martin´ retired from the Field
Ranch a while back after about
40 years. After that, we’d see
him out walking or maybe fishing a little along Lewis Creek.
Then one day in September,
Martin´ found his new career
as a crossing guard down next
to the elementary school. He
got a blaze orange vest, a paddle sign with “stop” on one side
and “slow” on the other. And
they gave him a whistle. Oh
yes, the whistle. At first, when a
child was spotted a block away,
Martin´ would trot out to the
middle of the intersection, blow
his whistle, hold up his paddle
and turn it around so everyone
saw “stop,” regardless of where
you were. And we’d wait until
some third-grader got safely to
school.
Then we were waved on
through. And with each wave
of Martin’s hand there was a
blast on the whistle. Oh yes, that
whistle.
The school sure picked the
right guy for the job. If you want
someone who can stand out there
every morning in heat and rain
and snow and spring winds, just
look for an old cowboy.
Martin´ took all his “tough
lessons” ages ago. His assistant each morning was Billy, the
town dog. The two of them make
a dynamite security squad.
The problem Martin´ was having, however, was that he had
more time than children, and
that led to his current trafficcontrol methods. He watches
carefully, and if a car is coming from a right angle, he steps
out and blows the whistle and
stops us. And if the car slows,
Martin´ waves him on whether
he wants to go that way or not.
And that’s when there aren’t any
kids around.
But no one complains. He’s
there early, he’d stop a train to
let kids cross the street, and he
works for free. So what’s a few
whistle blasts and marching
orders among friends?
You have to admire professionalism wherever it may be
found.

What Is All the
Stress About?
By Sal Arrigo, Jr.
If you have ever experienced moving from one house
to another, you know this can
be a stressful time in your life.
If you are someone with dementia, it only adds to the stress.
I spoke about this with Carrin
Jankowski, owner of Silver
Lining Transitions, a company
that assists families in moving
older people from their homes to
a new living environment. Often
these senior citizens are moving
from a home they have lived in
for decades, and now, because
of circumstances beyond their
control (e.g. dementia, a loss of
spouse, or the upkeep of residence that is too daunting), these
seniors must move.
Carrin started Silver Lining
Transitions in 2014 and is
currently a student in the
Gerontology Department at
American River College. As
Carrin made her way through
the educational system she came
into more and more contact with
people who were facing the difficult task of transitioning loved
ones to a new living environment. It was not just simple
tasks, such as what should a person take or leave behind, but it
was much greater than this.
A medical diagnosis called
“Relocation Stress Syndrome”
is affecting senior citizens. It
causes “physiologic and psychological disturbances that
are triggered by transferring
a person from one environment to another.” Symptoms
may include exhaustion, sleep
disturbances, depression, and
disorientation. These symptoms are increased in someone
who has dementia, or who is
already in poor health. One of
the findings is this: people usually developed this syndrome
when, without much notice,
were moved into an assisted living facility. However, it is not
just being forced to leave one’s
home, but findings show that
people who are moving of their
own choice are also developing
relocation stress symptoms.
signals a loss of control in their
environment.”
Silver Lining Transitions provides a wide range of services
that includes placement, geriatric counseling, downsizing,
packing, removal, staging, move
coordination, and setting up the
new home. Carrin said she does
this “with a sense of humor.”

Blessings Can Really
Use Your Help!
Carrin Jankowski, owner of Silver Lining Transitions
When Carrin is hired to help
move an older family member, she told me: “This is more
than dollars and cents.” Carrin
engages the family in all aspects
of the move, from packing boxes
to taking pictures of the new
surroundings, and, as much as
possible, “creating the exact
setup of the living space from
old to new.” As Carrin told me
about her business, she mentioned that “people have their
whole life story in front of
them, and this is unsettling, and
The move is tough enough she
said, so maintaining some sense
of normalcy is a positive for all.

list of professional references,

Carrin provides, you can contact Silver Lining Transitions at

High School baseball team can focus on Sierra Valley Conference
action.
After its SVC home game against Union Mine was stopped
after one inning because of rain (continued on Wednesday)
Cordova hosted El Dorado on Tuesday. Despite banging out eight
hits, the Lancers fell to the Cougars by a 6-3 score.
“We made some little mistakes,” said Cordova head coach
Doug Hughes. “We are still learning but I’m happy with our
effort; my guys never quit.”
Three Cordova players had two hits each in the game: Jeremy
Buck, Logan Appino, and Jerimiah Anderson. Buck and Anderson
had a double each.
Spencer Gudgel, along with Michael Brown and Jarrett Harris,
had an RBI each for Cordova (0-1 in the SVC, 0-3-1 overall).
After Wednesday’s make-up game with the Diamondbacks,
Cordova hosted Galt yesterday, Thursday.
Tomorrow, Cordova will play at Florin in a non-conference
game that is scheduled to start at noon. H

Conference honors have come in
for members of the Cordova High
School boys and girls basketball
teams.
Three Cordova boys hoop players were honored by the Sierra
Valley Conference during the
coaches’ All-SVC meeting recently.
Guards DeAnte Wilkins along with
fellow backcourt players Damion
Baldwin and Jason Novik, were
named to the all-SVC team.
Wilkins, a senior, led the Lancers
in scoring, averaging 14 points
per game in 25 games this season.
Wilkins, at 6 foot 3 inches, also
made 34 three-pointers and made
29 of 52
free throws
for 56 percent in the
season.

Novik is the lone junior among

annual Cordova Christmas Classic
three months ago with wins over
Encina, Grant, and Wood, which
beat Cordova in the section’s
Foundation Game prior to their
second meeting in the Lancers’
tournament.
The future looks bright for
Johnson and the Lancers. Novik is
one of six juniors who are expected
to return next season. On top of
that, the Cordova junior varsity
boys basketball team posted an 8-2
record in the SVC and 21-6 overall.
Rounding out the SVC was
Liberty Ranch, which won the conference title. Isaiah Halsey was
named the conference’s MVP.
Three additional Hawk players were named to the all-SVC
squad and their head coach, Josh
Williams, was named Coach of
the Year. The Hawks finished the
regular season at 27-0 and 30-2
that included reaching the section’s D-IV semifinals and the
second round of the California
Interscholastic Federation’s State
Championships Nor-Cal D-IV
playoffs.
For the Cordova girls basketball team, which finished in
second place in the SVC at 7-3
and 13-14 overall, three players
made all-SVC. Lancer Head Coach
Raymond Bradley wanted to withhold the names of those players
until the program holds its end-ofthe-season banquet next month.H
the team, now 25-40 and thinking
about next year.
As the Jazz scored at will during the third quarter, Reynolds
remarked with exasperation,
“That’s way too easy. The fans are
not liking that kind of defense.”
You might be inclined to call it
“Matador Defense,” except that
no Kings’ defenders would waste
their breath shouting out, “Ole!,”
nor would they flash any red capes
around the rim, electing, instead,
to wave an invisible white flag of
disinterested surrender.
As the Jazz’ lead grew to 22
points (soon to peak at 25), the
fans at Sleep Train Arena awakened from their collective slumber,
momentarily, to shower a chorus
of “boos” upon their Kings as they
left the floor for a timeout.
“The word I would use,” said
Napear, “is ‘energy,’ or lack
thereof. I haven’t seen any of that
this afternoon from Sacramento.”
He later added, pointedly, “You’ve
got to come out with some professional pride and some enthusiasm.
This is what you are paid to do.”
All-Star center DeMarcus
Cousins, in his sixth season, fills
up the stat sheets with impressive
individual numbers, but can’t get
along with his coach and wouldn’t
be classified as a true team leader,
often complaining about his
personal frustrations. He just
returned from a one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to
the team, something that seems to
occur quite often but usually goes
by unpunished.
Cousins possesses undeniable
talents but, so far, is not a winning
player. He is a volume shooter
and scorer, but plays defense
when he feels up to it. He pads
his rebounding totals by oftentimes being uncommitted to team
defense and hanging around under
the basket. When he handles the
ball at the offensive end, teammates stand around watching to
see what DeMarcus will do next.
The team seemed to have put
together a better roster this season, but it turned out to be lacking
in chemistry and loaded with fractured relationships that leads to
disjointed play on the court, realized in their third-worst turnover
percentage in the league.
Perhaps things will change
when the sorry Kings move into
their new downtown arena next
season, but they just might need
a new everything else, too. Poor
Grant and Jerry are doing alright,
but they do deserve a better game
to call.
Meanwhile, there are others --besides any team that plays the
60-6 Golden State Warriors --- that
also deserve our sympathy. Every
March they are easy to spot just
after the NCAA Division I Men’s
Basketball Tournament bracket
comes out. First, feel sorry for
the members of the selection
committee, just because they can
never please everybody. Then,
feel for the snubbed --- teams like
St. Mary’s College, Monmouth,
Florida, San Diego State, South
Carolina and all of those teams
that won their conference
BY
GERRY SCHOLL
regular-season titles but fell short
in those dastardly conference tournaments and the automatic NCAA
bids.
St. Mary’s, 27-5 and regular-season co-champ of the West
Coast Conference, defeated
co-champ Gonzaga (a NCAA No.11-seed) two out of three, but fell
to the Zags in the WCC tourney
title game. The Gaels lost at Cal
(a best-ever, No.-4 seed, set to
face Hawaii) in a hotly-contested
game in the closing moments. Cal
(23-10), lost late at Virginia (a
No.-1 seed) early in the season.
How might St. Mary’s do versus
Virginia at a neutral site? We’ll
never know.
Two losses to Pepperdine and
what turned out to be a mediocre non-conference schedule hurt
the Gaels. But SMC was tops in
the nation in field-goal percentage
(50.9), seventh in 3-point accuracy
(41.3), fifth in scoring defense,
third in fewest turnovers and No.
1 in assist/turnover ratio. Those
are impressive figures against anybody --- they should’ve been in,
but have been relegated to hosting New Mexico State in the
NIT. Four teams selected over
St. Mary’s --- Wichita State,
Vanderbilt, Tulsa and Michigan
--- all had Ratings Percentage
Index (RPI) worse than the Gaels.
What’s up with that? Sorry.
You can also have a little sympathy for the fates of the No.-16
seeds in The Dance --- they surely
face a one-and-done, since no
16-seed has ever defeated a No. 1.
But you could say, “They have a
chance.”
As the Major League Baseball
season approaches, there are
some rebuilding teams --namely Philadelphia, Colorado,
Atlanta, Cincinnati, San Diego,
Milwaukee, Seattle, Minnesota
and, dare we say, Oakland --whose fans could be told that their
teams have “no chance.” Sorry.
But if you truly should feel
sorry for anybody above everyone
else, it’s all of those young Little
League players that had their
Opening Day parades and earlyseason practices rained out.
