Presidents Report – September 2013
President’s Pen
After a very busy year, a new committee has been
elected for 2013-2014. This year we have many
keen hands on deck to help perform the tasks set
for the next year to come. I would like to thank:
Jules Victor our outgoing Vice President and
would like to welcome Cath Butler to the position
of Vice President.
I would like to thank Barry Beattie for his steady
commitment to the position of Secretary and
would like to welcome new Secretary, Tracey
Hammell.
Congratulations to Steve Done for nomination to
Assistant Secretary, Congratulations to Dee
Causevic for her hard work last year on the
Treasurer position and her re-nomination to the
position for this year.
I would like to congratulate new committee
members: Paulette Steele, Roslyn Keenan, Barry
Beattie, Sylvia Zigenbien and Duncan Woolard.
Thank you to outgoing committee member Sue
Varkonyi for volunteering her time to BASEQ.
The BASEQ jam was held on Sunday at Coorparoo
RSL with the fresh faced boys from the
Melbourne band, Catfish Voodoo, hosting. They
had a great vibe and energy and entertained the
limited crowd that attended. I was disappointed
with the turn out, considering this had been
advertised for the past month. The last Sunday of
the month is the day when BASEQ hold the jam; it
would be great for more of our members to come
to the next jam on 29th September at 1.00 pm,
host band is Andrew Baxter Band. Come along
and renew your membership or you can do this
online @ www.baseqbrisbane.com and go to the
renew membership section.
We are currently organizing our Birthday Bash,
date to be announced, depending on venue
availability.
Continued…..
We will be using this day to fund the Memphis
Challenge for 2015 and will have up to 6 bands
organized to entertain the punters. It will be a
fabulous day of fun and entertainment. Venue
and date to be announced.
I have not much to say, as you all would have
received an update on last year’s business with
the announcement of the new committee via
email last week. Steve and I will be away for the
next month until the end of September, as we
will be going on holiday to Greece. If you have
any BASEQ business that needs addressing you
can email our Vice President, Cath Butler on
[email protected]
I am looking forward to finding some Rebetika to
go and listen to whilst in Crete. This is the Greek
Blues, born from specific urban circumstances. It
is all very relevant to me specifically as I had both
of my of Grandmothers exhiled from their
homeland of Alatsata, Smyrna in 1922.
Blues is music of the soul!
Desley Done - President
“The womb of rebetika was the jail and the hash
den. It was there that the early rebetes created
their songs. They sang in quiet, hoarse voices,
unforced, one after the other, each singer adding
a verse which often bore no relation to the
previous verse, and a song often went on for
hours. There was no refrain, and the melody was
simple and easy. One rebetis accompanied the
singer with a bouzouki or a baglamas (a smaller
version of the bouzouki, very portable, easy to
make in prison and easy to hide from the police),
and perhaps another, moved by the music, would
get up and dance. The early rebetika songs,
particularly the love songs, were based on Greek
folk songs and the songs of the Greeks of Smyrna
and Constantinople.”— Elias Petropoulos

Support your Club..?
I am a member, but how does this help?
The Blues Association of South East Queensland has ONE
monthly Jam session during the month. This enables us to
raise funds and memberships and continue promoting the
awareness of Blues Music, locally and nationally. Our major
sponsor “The Coorparoo RSL” provides a venue that
promotes “Live Music” and gives supporters the
opportunity to enjoy, socialise and be entertained by some
of Brisbane's best…in the end, this contributes to our
industry.
The Coorparoo RSL provides an outstanding environment
for musicians to perform and provides “paid gig”
opportunities. THAT’s RIGHT Folks! this financial year the
Coorparoo RSL will have paid out well over $50,000 to
Bands and Sponsorship support to the music industry. So
ask yourself…is one day a month going to assist the
continued growth of Live Music…YOU BET IT WILL!
NEXT BASEQ WORKSHOP
Our Blues Workshop Series continues on the second
Sunday of every month at the Royal Mail Hotel, Goodna.
Free for BASEQ members, $10 for non members.
Our next work shop will be advised via social
media , website or direct communications

SUNDAY 29TH September
COORPAROO RSL -1PM
Passionate and powerful are adjectives commonly used
to describe blues performers, however up-tempo,
positive and funky are not. This personifies Gold Coast
artist Andrew Baxter. Whether in solo mode, duo, trio,
or with his 12 piece “Blues Extravaganza” show,
Andrew’s performances draws from a wide range of
influences and are always aimed at ensuring the
audience is entertained and goes home with a smile on
their face and a song on their lips
Sunday 29th Sept – host band Andrew Baxter Band.
Back line (PA, amps and drum kit) are provided. You are
welcome to bring your own amplifier (of an appropriate
size!). Jammers MUST bring their own instrument or
drum sticks (as the case may be) unless arrangements
are made PRIOR to the day you seek to borrow
another’s instrument or sticks for your set. Note: Dba
levels are monitored at venues (95Dba Max).

SPEAK NO EVIL – MORNINGSIDE FATS
LITTLE Jonny and the GIANTS
MORNINGSIDE FATS –
“SPEAK NO EVIL”
Paul Renton has been a
fixture on the SE Qld
blues scene for many a
year. Fronting outfits
like The Juke Joint
Johnnys and Light Street
Motors, he lit up many a
venue with classic blues and RnB tunes, plus a
smattering of originals. I know, ‘cos I was there a lot of
the time.
Recent years saw the singer/ guitar-slinger adopt the
identity of Morningside Fats to showcase his original
songs. This CD is the result – an all-original ten-song
collection of blues with flavours of jazz, funk and Cajun
in the mix.
Fats’ mellow vocals and clever lyrics contrast with
stinging, swinging guitar lines. Underpinning every track
is the propulsive groove of soulmates Steve and Shelley
Robin. This trio could easily have nailed the songs by
themselves (as they do live), but a little gravy on the
steak is provided by guest ‘flavour’ on selected tracks –
Adam Owens on sax, Matt Dunn on harp, Geoff Parsons
on percussion, and John Tweed on organ.
A latin groove on the opener “First Impression” may
confound expectations, while definitely getting the toes
tapping. The chunky shuffle “The Things You Do” will
reassure you that this IS a blues album after all. The title
track is an ominous blues mambo with harp and a greasy
sax break. Other highlights include the funky “It’s Not
About You”, swampy two-steppin’ “Beautiful World”,
and the sign-off instrumental “Waiting For Megs”.
Stick these songs in your digital player of choice (sorry
no vinyl or cassette version) and make them part of your
proudly Aussie spring/summer soundtrack.
Queenslander!

The Colonel

Lauro August 2013
Before getting into this
review I took a quick stroll
through Little Jonny's
website. It was there that
I
saw a blurb from Jonny that I found
somewhat amusing.
It seemed that he was quite excited that this CD, "We
Got It Goin' On", had made Blues Junctions top 20 CDs
of 2013 (thus far, anyway). However, what impressed
him even more was the fact that The Giants were in a
group that included Duke Robillard, Finis Tasby, Kim
Wilson, Ronnie Earl, The Four Jacks, et al. Although
appreciating and admiring his humbleness, I related that
to the likes of Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris getting
excited to be in a group that included Duke Snider and
Willie Mays. Get used to it Jonny, this talented bunch
you've assembled belongs with those other guys.
"We Got It Goin' On" features Jon "Little Jonny" Lawton
on vocals and guitar, Aki Kumar on harmonica, Bob
Welsh on piano, Doug James on tenor & baritone
saxophones, Frankie Ramos on tenor sax, Kid Anderson
on B3 organ & guitar, Marty Dodson on drums, and
Vance Ehlers on bass. A pair of the tracks are older live
recordings that include Sid Morris on piano and another
pair from a previous session include Frank DeRose on
bass and Carlos Velasco on drums. The disc's fourteen
tracks are an even split of Jon's originals and covers.
Right from the opening notes of the opening track,
Howlin' Wolf's "I Didn't Know", the band immediately
slips into the tightest of grooves. With steady horn
arrangements and sharp piano highlights leading the
massive rhythm behind them, Little Jonny on lead and
Kid on rhythm guitars are absolutely awesome together.
All that, with Jon's silky, smooth vocals make this one of
the best.
You can check out Little Jonny And The Giants by going
to www.littlejonny.net. If you're a baby boomer, not
only will some of the graphics put a smile on your face,
but they'll quickly give you an idea of just how long
Jonny's been into the music scene.

BASEQ Up Close and Personal
With Ray Beadle
At this year’s 2013 Blues on Broadbeach Festival, BASEQ
President Dez Done interviewed all the artists who
appeared at the BASEQ Marquee. This series of
interviews will be presented in coming issues of Groove.
Up Close and Personal with Ray Beadle. Interviewed by
Desley Done at Blues on Broadbeach, May , 2013.
RB: I have written a few tunes… It doesn’t come easy for
me, especially lyrics… music I can write til the cows
come home. But I don’t know… years ago when I was
having a hard time I was writing a lot… I think it’s too
dam good now… LOL ..So the last three years
especially… It’s been good since I left my day job and
now just playing music full time..yeah it’s too good.
DD: When was the first time you realized you had the
drive to take your music seriously?
DD: What’s your name and where were you born?
RB: My name is Ray Beadle I was born in Fairfield west of
Sydney, out in the western suburbs. I haven’t been back
there for nearly twenty years. I live down near
Wollongong now…. been there 10 years
DD: Who first inspired you to be a musician?
RB: It would have to be my dad. He played guitar. He
taught me how to play guitar when I was about nine.
Yeah I was pretty obsessed for about 6 years …pretty
overly obsessed…. it was really bad actually.
RB: That’s easy…that was about three years ago. I was
driving interstate semi trailers for about eight years.
And I just never thought I could make a living out of
music. Until I turned thirty, and I thought, Oh.. I could
see the next thirty years in the truck… and I had a bit of
a think about it and thought…. Oh I should have a go.
LOL Otherwise I’ll always regret it .. you know..
DD: It’s a good decision for you then!! Obviously!
RB: LOL. So far so good.
DD: Who are your musical inspirations?
DD: And you’re not obsessed now??
RB: No…. No not really… I am more obsessed about cars
actually.
DD: So can you describe for us what type of music you
play?
RB: Try and do a bit of everything.. blues is always
there…. in everything I play… I can’t help it.. sort of my
favourite type of music… if I am playing rock, there is still
blues there.. if I am playing jazz there is style a bit of
blues in there.
RB: Albert King’s definitely number one for me… and …
Everything else I listen to I sort of hear Albert King in it
anyway.. he has influenced so many other artists. He is
pretty much The Man.
DD: Do you get nervous before you perform and what
do you do to overcome it.?
RB: LOL…. I do like a few rums.. LOL It helps me out a
bit… LOL.. I don’t really get nervous, just depends on the
day.
DD: So what’s happening for Ray Beadle in the future??
DD: What is your favourite song of all time?
RB: There is a good Albert King song that I like, called
‘Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to
die’. It’s a really good slow blues, great lyrics.
DD: Do you normally write original material?
RB: Mostly playing in Sydney. Just trying to do different
sort of gigs playing with different musicians and trying
to get into different scenes.
DD: That was ‘Up Close and Personal with Ray Beadle’.
What a great guy.
