BiP_HOp is a webzine, a radio show, organizing live events
every month, and above all a label documenting the state of modern
electronic art and sound design, unconventional sound adventures,
contemporary electronica that is challenging the ears and the mind.
DJ/[email protected] = philippe petit who started Djing,
animating radio shows and editing zines in the mid-80s. In the 9Ts
founded the experimental label Pandemonium Rdz.

41 records later, he needed to rejuvenate and started a new
label. BiP_HOp was physically born in 2000 and will document
avant electro for the century to come...

Philippe has chosen to use his e-mail address, [email protected], as his "live" alias to keep it easy, and avoid
pretentiousness too often encountered among DJ circles…
According to him a DJ is not only an instrument for dancing
but as a living musical library he should also take his audience to a
new cultural trip / discovery. Philippe wants to entertain listeners
and to open new "doors of perception", to create a virtual world to
enable them to forget about their own existence for a short while.
Philippe tries to tell us a story, with a beginning and an end.
The content of the mix is obviously of critical importance,
but the DJ's technique should never overflow its creative aspect
(inspiration); however, it must bring the live touch to the fluid
sequence music to give birth in the end, to a unique, playful and
truly lively performance.
DJ [email protected] is specialised in mixing electronica,
ambientism, avant-hip-hop, dubby playful rythmic "electroclashics"
and minimal-techno in a plunderphonic way, essential part of
different songs all mixed together to keep the rythmn alive. Using
Pioneer MK II CD players allowing to manipulate/carress sounds +
a laptop to add sci-fi, prepaired guitar chords, various clicks &
electro-acoustic or field recordings in the background forming a
tapestry of sound, running up to 6 different sources altogether to
create a deep sound assemblage. Topping it all he surfes thru the
waves of his mobile radio player, improvising through radio
frequencies and waves. It's a great depth that he creates.

Guitar-heroic documenting the contemporary ways of playing guitar in opposition to the oldfashioned myth of guitar-heroes… prepaired, detuned, melancholic, panoramic, free-pickin,
feedbacking, droning, beautiful a la Fennesz, GYBE!, Fonica, Myrah, Twine, Grubs, David Sylvian,
Loren Mazzacane Connors, Do Make Say Think, Mike Cooper, Slint, Talk Talk … etc…mixed into
drones, , various clicks & electro-acoustic or field recordings forming a tapestry of sound, running up
to 6 different sources altogether to create a deep sound assemblage.
Space is the Place = using only sources, extracts from B-Movies, sci-fi soundtracks, a very cinematic

Avant hip-hop = morphing weird hip-hop a la Mush / Anticon into digitalia, grain upon beats…
Disco riot grrls = mixing only music composed, sung by women, very electro and fun, people dance
and girls scream listening to the likes of Adult., Kittin, X-Ray-Spex bootlegged with Legowelt, Juan
Mac Lean, Kit Builders, Atomizer, Gd Luxxe w/ Steffi, Peaches... etc… An electroFLASH !
Jazz = a meeting between classical free 60 and modern, Sun Ra, Miles Davis, Pharoah Sanders,
Coltrane, Coleman meet Cinematic Orchestra, Manitoba, Spaceheads, Fleischmann…
Stop Beatin' around the Bush = vs. The american pro-war imperialismachinee. Politically engaged,
using voices from bush, rumsfeld & co mixed into hits from US musical history.
His mixes are enhanced by the beautiful and futuristic videomixes of Ric Hudgins, aka Phase4 –
from Ohio - a member of Twine and Coldcut’s Pirate TV.

phase04 is what a tv programme would look like if one hooked up a car battery to its input and poured
electro-juice in its picture tube and then kicked it for good measure. hyper-speed feedback and
everyday turned future-strange-way: video so confused and mixed up that it forgets how to retrace and
self-implodes into a pixel storm of static waves. the medium of the massage has been asking for it.
phase04 deconstructs video to its basic parts, to then be re-assembled into a visualized battle between
the living world and the ways of men with their machines. but in phase 04, one is free to wander and
dream... the programmer's spell can't distort your mind.
