Our 2017 Southern tour starts off in Charleston, South Carolina
Our 2017 Southern tour starts off in Charleston, South Carolina, where a community’s connection to the past is evident at every turn. Here, lovingly preserved homes and gardens, the sounds of horse-drawn carriages navigating cobblestone streets, and a uniquely intimate cityscape illustrate a bygone era that once you’ve immersed yourself in, will never leave you. We continue on to Savannah, Georgia—known for its quaint cobblestone streets, majestic architecture, manicured parks, and oldSouth charm. A city draped in history, we’ll leave no stone unturned, including what is known as “Savannah Beach!” We’ll explore Tybee Island’s rich history, natural beauty, and divine cuisine. Oh, and we might want to mention, Paula Deen has a vacation home here! Our next stop brings us further south to Jacksonville, Florida, where a “whole new side of Florida,” will surely surprise us, and St. Augustine, the oldest city in our nation that waits to dazzle us with its living history, coastal tranquility, and timeless charm. DAY 1 SUNDAY, MARCH 19, 2017 CHARLESTON, SC (D) We depart from our designated locations to transfer to the airport for our flight to Charleston. We'll enjoy a relaxing dinner and our lovely Charleston accommodations. DAY 2 MONDAY, MARCH 20, 2017 CHARLESTON, SC (BL) Begin today with breakfast at the hotel. Today is a special day filled with southern charm and culture. We'll begin with a narrated, horse drawn carriage tour through Charleston's cobblestone streets, where our guide will recount the vibrant tale of three hundred years of the city's rich history. Soak it all in as you enjoy Charleston's uniquely intimate cityscape, illustrating a bygone era. Next, we are off to explore what the Garden Club of America has called “the most important and most interesting garden in America.” Middleton Place is 65 acres of a National Historic Landmark and home to America's Oldest Landscaped Gardens—where something is always blooming. Just down the road, we'll visit Drayton Hall for a delicious Lowcountry lunch and take an in-depth look at this enduring plantation and its extraordinary history. Part of the history that we'll learn about is a favorite 18th century libation, with a Madeira tasting session. This evening, explore Charleston's historic district for dinner on your own. After dinner we have a special surprise! There is no experience like walking enchanted Charleston at night while listening to supernatural stories, on a Ghost Tour. You never know what you may see, hear, or encounter! DAY 3 TUESDAY, MARCH 21, 2017 SAVANNAH, GA (BD) After breakfast, we depart for Savannah, known for its quaint cobblestone streets, majestic architecture, manicured parks, and old-South charm. Today, the city’s original 1733 colonial design has blossomed into a gracious city, whose downtown has been enhanced by more than 50 years of preservation. Twenty-two oak-canopied squares, surrounded by stately homes, churches, and broad thoroughfares gives Savannah a character all its own. Our walking tour of Savannah will leave no stone unturned. We'll enjoy lunch on our own, exploring River Street and the City Market, where century old buildings and once cotton warehouses now hold an abundance of antique shops, brew pubs, restaurants, distinctive boutiques, and spectacular galleries. Next, we'll visit the Davenport House Museum—this is essential in experiencing the history of Savannah and its historic preservation renaissance. Master builder, Isaiah Davenport, a native of New England, designed and built the home as a dwelling for his growing household, as well as a demonstration of his building skills. We'll enjoy dinner together this evening. DAY 4 WEDNESDAY, MARCH 22, 2017 SAVANNAH, GA (BL) We'll start our day with a hearty breakfast, followed by a fully narrated sightseeing trolley tour of one of the largest National Urban Historic Landmarked Districts in the United States. You’ll be guided through more than 270 years of American history as you journey through Savannah’s Historic District, riding along cobblestone paved streets beneath moss-draped oaks. Seeing the “Old South” this way, with her stately mansions, beautiful squares, romantic riverfront and abundance of artifacts is an experience not to be missed. For lunch, we’ll stop at Paula Deen's Lady & Sons restaurant, for traditional southern food! After lunch, enjoy the rest of the day to soak in the South—explore, shop, and have dinner on your own. DAY 5 THURSDAY, MARCH 23, 2017 SAVANNAH, GA (BD) This morning we board our motorcoach to depart for what is known as “Savannah Beach.” We'll visit the Tybee Island Light Station and Museum. It is one of seven surviving colonial era lighthouse towers. Tybee Island is rich in history, natural beauty, and divine cuisine. Discover lunch on your own while you delight in the Eastern seaboard. This afternoon, we'll return to Savannah for a walking tour of Homes & Gardens, offering us a rare opportunity to enter some of Savannah's finest private homes and admire the special furnishings that have been treasured by families for generations, but seldom seen by visitors! Tonight, we delight in a dinner fit for a pirate, at the Pirate House. DAY 6 FRIDAY, MARCH 24, 2017 JACKSONVILLE, FL (BL) Following breakfast this morning, we travel to Jacksonville, where we’ll learn of the Timuquan, the area's first inhabitants, French and Spanish colonization 55 years before the Pilgrims landed in the new world, "Hollywood" Jacksonville, and the Great Fire of 1901. See the one-of-a-kind Memorial Wall, the Jacksonville Football Stadium, and much more! On our city tour, our guide will present the city's history through fascinating stories and amusing anecdotes designed to give us a unique perspective on Jacksonville. After touring the downtown area, we are off to the Riverside/Avondale area. See the Park Lane Apartments, the first Florida condos. We will also see the “Bryson Residence,” also known as the “Marble House,” as it is made of marble quarried in Georgia and the “Leon Cheek Residence,” built in 1928. Mr. Cheek was head of the Cheek and Niel Coffee company, which we know today as Maxwell House coffee. Enjoy the tour and the view as we drive by several historical homes. After checking into our hotel, we'll take time to explore Florida's fantastic cuisine with dinner on our own. DAY 7 SATURDAY, MARCH 25, 2017 ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (BD) Featured today is St. Augustine, the oldest occupied city in the U.S. Enjoy the short drive and the barrier islands en route to St. Augustine. While in St. Augustine, enjoy a city tour to learn of the Fountain of Youth, Old Jail, Mission of Nombre de Dios (Shrine), where first Catholic Mass was offered, Castillo de San Marcos, our nation's oldest monument, and much more of the “Oldest City.” We'll tour the Memorial Presbyterian Church, Florida's first Presbyterian congregation, established in 1824. Next, we'll take an immersive, captivating journey through centuries of St. Augustine's rich history, brought to breathtaking life at the Colonial Quarter—the revitalized two-acre signature attraction in the heart of the downtown historic district.
