Sefton guide to charity shops and services 2013-14 CHOOSE CHARITY SHOPS This directory has been produced by: - Sefton Council for Voluntary Service: Registered Charity No: 1024546, Company Limited by Guarantee Registered No: 2832920 Sefton Pensioners’ Advocacy Centre: Registered charity no: 1055951 Volunteer Centre Sefton Volunteer Centre Sefton works with individuals and organisations from within the borough of Sefton in order to promote, deliver and develop high-quality voluntary opportunities. The Centre supports the increasing number of people engaged in volunteering in Sefton by referring potential volunteers to voluntary opportunities within the voluntary and statutory sector via a variety of methods including one-to-one interviews, newsletters, website registration and via www.do-it.org.uk. The Centre also supports accreditation and recognition of volunteers by providing certificates of achievement. The Volunteer Centre is part of the sub-regional and North West network of volunteer centres and is quality assured with Volunteering England. The project is proud to retain the MATRIX award for Information, Advice and Guidance. CVS’s role is to promote and assist the borough’s voluntary, community and faith (VCF) sector by providing a wide range of services including information and advice, training, organisational development support and advice on key issues including funding, charity and company registration, board development, business planning and equality and diversity. “Advocacy is taking action to help people say what they want, secure their rights, represent their interests and obtain services they need. Advocates and advocacy schemes work in partnership with the people they support and take their side. Advocacy promotes social inclusion, equality and social justice.” Our purpose is to support older people in Sefton to get their voices heard in decisions affecting their lives. We provide free, independent and confidential advocacy services and promote self-advocacy through our Older People’s Forum. For more information on Sefton Pensioners’ Advocacy Centre, please visit www.spac-advocacy.org.uk or contact on 01704 538411. Whilst every effort is made to ensure that accurate information is provided in this directory, neither Volunteer Centre Sefton, Sefton CVS, Sefton Pensioners’ Advocacy Centre, the board of directors and Management Committee, the editors or contributors undertake any liability for any error or omission. As part of this role, Sefton CVS maintains a database of the details of around 1,300 VCF sector organisations, services and projects in the borough which can be used to signpost residents to the groups that can help them. CVS can access the information on this database by a variety of criteria including area, type of support or theme (for example advocacy or community safety) and potential service users (for example groups that specialise in supporting older people or exservice personnel). For more information on this and other services provided by Sefton CVS ring 0151-920 0726 or visit www.seftoncvs.org.uk. Sefton Helping Hand Services Sefton Helping Hand collects donations of good quality furniture and redistributes them to residents in need in the borough. This service can be crucial to families on a limited income, helping to improve their quality of life and reduce stress. Redistributing furniture is also good for the environment, preventing usable items from going to landfill. 4 5 In addition, the service only currently operates in the following postcode areas: L10, L20, L21, L22, L23, L30, L31, L37 and L38. Parenting 2000 School Uniform Bank (Sub) Parenting 2000 has a large selection of pre-loved and outgrown school uniform available free to all parents and carers of children at the following schools: English Martyrs, Hatton Hill, Litherland Moss, Our Lady Queen of Peace, St Philip’s and Litherland High. If you need furniture, or you want to arrange a collection, ring 0151 932 9008. It’s really easy to access the SUB – just pop along to Parenting 2000 at Alexandra Mount and fill in a form. However, only furniture in good condition can be accepted, and upholstered items must have a label attached showing their compliance to fire safety regulations. Sefton Foodbanks Every day people in Sefton go hungry for reasons that range from being made redundant to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. Sefton’s Foodbanks – run in partnership with national charity the Trussell Trust – provide a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people in this sort of crisis situation. Care professionals such as doctors, health visitors and social workers identify people who are in difficulties and issue them with a voucher which can be exchanged for food at one of a number of distribution centres. The food at these centres comes from foodbank collection points which are located in a number of supermarkets in the borough where volunteers encourage customers to buy and donate items. As this directory went to press foodbanks were operating successfully in Southport, South Sefton and Crosby and plans were in the pipeline to open a further foodbank in Maghull in autumn 2013. For more information contact Southport Foodbank on 01704 544419, Crosby Foodbank on 07580 156311, South Sefton Foodbank on 0151 933 1300 or Sefton CVS on 0151 920 0726. 6 Parenting 2000 is also pleased to receive donations of uniform for these schools that can be reused by other families. Ring 0151 920 7137 if you can help. Citizens Advice Sefton Citizens Advice Sefton provides free, independent, confidential and impartial advice on rights and responsibilities to residents throughout the borough, as it has been doing since 1939.
