Hello!
Thank you for opening Saddleback Educational Publishing’s newest
catalog and joining us in our mission to meet the needs of ALL students.
Saddleback has been committed to helping struggling readers since it opened its doors
in 1982. As the premier publisher of hi-lo materials, the company has been an important
resource for special education teachers from the very beginning.
This commitment to literacy and the company’s passion for publishing high-quality books
at accessible levels is what drew me to join the team. My own work in the field of special
education has been focused on literacy for over 20 years. I am a proud author of both the
PCI Reading Program and the Teen Emergent Reader Libraries (included in this catalog)
and also a very proud parent of a child with autism. I am delighted to share with you this
collection of research-based, highly effective literacy programs and supplemental materials.

Five-Step Lesson Cycle
Turning Nonreaders into Readers
• Level
One Goal: Learn Five Words and Read a Book
• Level
Two Goal: Learn Ten Words and Read a Book
The five-step lesson cycle is easy to learn and establishes a routine that promotes student focus and addresses regression. Using a combination
of visual discrimination, tactile reinforcement, guided practice, and independent activities, students learn to automatically recognize and correctly
pronounce each word. Every word is practiced and reviewed more than 100 times, promoting both short- and long-term retention, but activities are
varied enough to maintain student focus and interest.

Esther Minskoff
Teaching Reading to Struggling Learners
Objective
The student will understand that every letter has an upper- and lowercase form.
Materials
• several sets of objects, each containing two objects that are the same
and one that is different (e.g., two paperclips and one pencil)
Materials
• lowercase alphabet flash cards
• a computer keyboard
Method
Place the first set on the table. Ask the student, “Which one is different?”
Repeat this activity several times with different sets of objects. Some students
may benefit from doing this activity daily for several days.
Method
Place the keyboard in front of the student. Hold up a lowercase alphabet flash
card, and say the name of the letter shown (e.g., g). Then ask the student to
touch the key with the matching uppercase letter and simultaneously say the
name of the letter (e.g., G).
Variations
1. Repeat the method, but reverse the question. Instead ask, “Which two
objects are the same?”
Variations
2. Increase the difficulty by selecting objects that have one attribute in
common. For example, you might select three empty boxes. Two of the
boxes might be gelatin boxes, and the other box might be an oatmeal
box. Ask the student, “Which one is different?”
1. Allow the student to type the upper- and lowercase letter pairs using a
computer and a word processing program. Ask the student to say the
name of each letter as he or she presses the letter key on the keyboard.
2. Write an uppercase letter on the chalkboard, and say its name. Have the
student find the matching lowercase letter in a deck of alphabet flash cards.
Then ask the student to hold up the lowercase letter and say its name.
3. Create sets that include three objects that are almost exactly alike. For
example, you might gather three index cards and cut off the corner of one
index card. Or you might select three toothbrushes, two of the same color
and one of a different color. Then, place all three objects on the table. Ask
the student, “Which one is different?”
3. Search for web sites that allow the student to practice matching upperand lowercase letters. Many sites contain interactive games for the student
to enjoy while practicing this important skill.

Building Print Recognition Using Upper- and Lowercase Letters
“At the least, we need to be more alert to print awareness, as well as all the
other factors that influence a child’s complex journey toward becoming a reader,
and understand why exposure to many types of print enhances this journey.”
“The ability to perceive visual stimuli as being the same or different is necessary

Van and his dad went to the lake for the weekend.
They made their food over a small pit, and each of
them had a cot to sleep on. They had a lot of fun
because both of them like to be outside.
This is one of the foods I like best. But this kind of
food has a shell that people should not eat. I have
to open the shell and take it off so I can eat the
good food that is inside.

A New Level of Accessible
Text for Teens
“One-fifth of high school
graduates can’t read
their diplomas.”
The Teen Emergent Reader Libraries® have been developed to solve the issue of
motivating the most struggling teen readers to pick up a book and start reading. Written
at the emergent and beginning reader levels, the books offer mature, teen-centric
storylines that entice teens to read. Formatted as 48- to 64-page books, these fiction
and nonfiction selections look similar to other teen novels and feature photographs to
reflect a contemporary, age-appropriate tone. In addition, each book is supported by
a lesson plan, guided reading questions, a reproducible comprehension activity, and a
quiz. The books, combined with the instructional support, provide the perfect solution for
today’s teacher who has to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners while
teaching on-grade-level concepts.

READING INTERVENTION
TextConnections
Reading Intervention to Build
Comprehension and Critical Reading Skills
Scaffolded Instruction
Grades: 6 to 12
This program was designed for adolescents who have mastered basic phonics and decoding but lack solid comprehension and critical thinking skills.
TextConnections focuses on comprehension strategies and skills and includes
vocabulary, fluency, writing, and independent reading. By mastering these
skills, your students may become engaged, competent readers of the kinds
of text they must understand for success in their academic, personal, and
professional lives.
All instructional approaches and learning tasks are based on seven key principles: scaffolded instruction, guided inquiry, metacognitive strategies, cooperative learning, memory connections, individualized learning, motivation
and engagement. Student performance is assessed formally through reading
passages followed by multiple-choice, short-answer, and open-response test
items. Other assessments include oral reading fluency, progress-monitoring
graphs, quick writes and writing projects, and vocabulary journals.

Differentiated Classics
Adapted Classics at Two Low Levels
RL: 1.0 to 2.0 | Grades: 5 to 12, YA | Lexile: 140L to 250L
We’ve taken our Timeless Classics and Shakespeare and made them even more
accessible. Words and phrases that may have stumped emergent readers have
been eliminated. We recognize that students in the same classroom may not have
equivalent reading skills, which is why the two levels appear virtually identical—
on the outside. Inside it’s a whole different look, with a larger font and extra white
space, making these stories visually appealing with the aim to improve reading
comprehension, fluency, and confidence. Classic fiction is 80 pages and classic
Shakespeare is 110 pages.

The Day Gets Colder
The Day Gets Colder
After Scrooge’s nephew left, two other men
came in. They now stood, with their hats off, in
Scrooge’s office. They had books and papers in
their hands, and bowed to him.
“Scrooge and Marley’s, I believe,” said
one of the gentlemen, looking at his list. “Tell
me, sir—am I addressing Mr. Scrooge or
Mr. Marley?”
“Mr. Marley has been dead these seven
years,” Scrooge said. “He died seven years ago
this very night.”
“Ah, well, Mr. Scrooge, then,” said the
gentleman, taking up a pen. “It is good to help
the poor. They suffer greatly in this festive
season. Many cannot meet their needs.
Hundreds of thousands do not have common
comforts, sir.”
“Are there no prisons?” asked Scrooge.
Scrooge took a long look at his clerk.
He was another strange fellow. He had a
large family and hardly any money. Yet
he was always cheerful.
The clerk greeted two men who came
in after Fred left. He showed them to
Scrooge’s office.
“Good afternoon!” one of the men
said.

Some expenses change.
You might spend more or
less on them.
Things like:
• clothes
• food
• gas
• fun
It is harder to fit these in

Where should you open an account?
It is your money. You must decide where
to put it.
A bank is a business. It has owners. They
want to make money.
So banks charge fees. Fees bring in
money.
Many banks are big. They have places all
over the U.S.
That is nice if you travel. Or go away to
college.

Nonfiction
Fiction
Designed to appeal to older readers, the nonfiction side
features engaging, full-color photographs of young adults in
real-world settings.
The fiction side is set up like a standard young adult novel,
but features slightly larger print and increased spacing
between lines to make the text accessible for even the most
struggling reader.

Worktexts
The 10 activity-based worktexts (8.25” x 10.75”) in this series will provide students a thorough
introduction to the “must have” multi-dimensional competencies, concepts, and vocabulary they
need to achieve independence in the twenty-first century world. Unlike the companion Handbooks, each student worktext (SW) features 16 two-page lessons. The Teacher’s Resource Guide
(TRG) for the worktexts, available only on CD-ROM, includes 60 reproducible exercises, six per
worktext, to support and extend primary instruction and includes answer keys for both the exercises and worktexts (delivered on CD-ROM).
•
Two-page lessons—16 in each worktext—focused on a particular subtopic
•
Word lists for both preview and review of essential vocabulary.
•
Preview and Review exercises introduce and wrap up each unit
•
A topic-related “Everyday Math” application in every lesson

Handbooks
Combining practical content with visual appeal, the 21st Century Lifeskills handbooks read
more like a magazine than a book. Highly readable with full-color photographs, a smaller
trim size (6” x 9”), and an eye-popping layout, these 120-page student handbooks (SH) are
great for teaching life skills to a twenty-first century population without the appearance of a
textbook. The 10 handbooks in this series will provide readers a thorough and non-threatening
introduction to the multi-dimensional competencies, concepts, and vocabulary they need to
achieve independence. Used alone or in conjunction with the activity-based 21st Century
Lifeskills worktexts, these handbooks offer students a unique and visual way to achieve realworld literacy.
School Library Journal Review
“This aptly named series is a goldmine of useful, practical
information that older teens and young adults need to live
productive and organized lives.”
