Historic Town
Wexford’s Monuments
Wexford town, Loch Garman, has its origins in
early Celtic legend. Christianised by St. Ibar, a
contemporary of St. Patrick, it was established
as a Viking Settlement in the 9th Century.
The Normans, who captured the town in 1169,
extended it to include Selskar Abbey, built
circa1190, and enclosed it with a
stone wall ( 2/3 extant).
Once the venue for the sport of bull-baiting,
introduced in 1621 by the town’s butcher guild.
Baiting took place on August 24th and
November 21st each year, with the hide of the
beast being presented to the mayor and the meat
given to feed the poor.
Ireland’s first declaration as a Republic was made
here in 1798. Today, the Bullring features the
Sheppard statue of the Pikeman, unveiled in
August 1905 to commemorate the rising of 1798.
Wexford was to the forefront of two major
rebellions against the English Crown. The first
from 1641 to 1649 brought the retribution of
Cromwell and the destruction of the town.
The second, in 1798, was swiftly ended by
General Lake.
The age of sail brought prosperity to the town
in the 19th century. The twin churches were
built at this time.
The laying of the railway and the age of steam
marked the end of Wexford’s importance as a
port. Early in the 20th century Wexford’s
factory workers endured a “lock out” for 6 mths.
A Wexford man, John Redmond, became the
leader of the Irish Home Rule party and in 1951
the internationally recognised Wexford Opera
Festival was founded by Dr Tom Walsh.
Present day Wexford has a population of
20,000 people, a purpose built opera house
and a new marina.

This medieval parish Church now in ruins dates back to at
least 1420 when a vicar of St. Patricks was mentioned in
chronicles. The graveyard contains the remains of many
who died in the rebellions of 1641 and 1798.
Church of The Assumption Bride Street
This Church of the Assumption at Bride Street, Wexford, opened its doors on April 18th, 1858 - one week
ahead of its twin, the Church of the Immaculate Conception at Rowe Street. The twin churches were
designed by Richard Pierce (c1801-1854) from Tenacre, Co. Wexford, who was clerk-of-works in Ireland for
the nineteenth-century neo-Gothic architect, Augustus Welby Pugin. Alongside the church building is the
Convent of the Sisters of Perpetual Adoration.

The imposing facade of the headquarters
of Wexford Borough Council owes much
of its origin as a gaol. The gaol was built in
1812, enclosing 58 cells and 16 exercising
yards. Public executions took place on a
green in front of the gaol until 1860.
The Franciscans were the oldest established religious
order in Wexford, having first arrived c. 1240. For many
years, theirs was the only Catholic church in Wexford
town. Friars are reputed to have been among the victims
of Cromwellian soldiers in 1649. The grounds of the Church
were the venue of huge Temperance rallies in the 1840s.

Friends Meeting House
Selskar Abbey
This is said to be one of the oldest sites of worship in Wexford.
According to tradition, an abbey was built on the site by Alexander
Roche. This abbey, the tower of which still stands, was the scene of
synods and parliaments over the centuries.

Wexford Arts Centre
St Iberius Church
Established by the Quakers’ as a meeting house in
1842, the House is now used as a bandroom. 11
This is Wexford’s Church of Ireland
place of worship and is traditionally
said to stand on an ecclesiastical site
dating back to the time of St. Patrick.
Wexford Opera House

Built in 1775 as a market house originally
the ground floor was an open arched are a
for traders. This building has always provided
entertainment and culture for visitors and
local people. It was here the Protestants of
Wexford formed the Brunswick Club in 1828
and John Wesley, Founder of the Methodists
is said to have preached here. Also known
as the Assembly Rooms, lectures, dances
and musical evenings were popular.

Church of the Immaculate
Conception Rowe Street
A very special feature of this church - like its
twin at Bride Street - is the magnificent threemanual Telford organ built in Dublin at the time
the church was built.
Wesleyan Methodist Chapel
The Wesleyan Methodist Church in Rowe Street was opened in 1835. It was
extended in 1880 to cater for an increased attendance. It no longer functions
as a church. Its facade however is protected through the interest taken by the
Local Authority in historical buildings.
A fine statue of Father Roche by sculptor Thomas
Farrell can be seen in the church grounds. This
church at Rowe Street is further distinguished
by its full peal of ten bells, used on special
occasions. The church records, the oldest extant
Catholic registers in Ireland, date from 1672.
This Church dates from the 1840s. It now
serves both the Presbyterian and
Methodist communities.
