THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME: BEAUMONT HAMEL July 1, 1916 On July 1st, 1916 Newfoundland faced one of its greatest tragedies in its history. July 1st was the first day of what became known as the Battle of the Somme. Initially envisioned to bring the German Army to its knees the first day ended in a colossal failure for the British Empire. Newfoundland played a small role on that day, but also suffered her greatest one day loss of the entire war. The Newfoundlander’s role that morning was especially tragic amongst a day of calamity. They were scheduled to attack one hour and 20 minutes after the battle was launched at 7:30 a.m. Unable to attack from the firing line the Newfoundlanders assaulted from their support trench 250 yards behind. The communication trenches and front line were choked with hundreds of wounded and dead. Eager to test their courage the soldiers climbed out of the support trench. They came into full view of the enemy silhouetted against the skyline with the sun in their faces. The 1st Newfoundland Regiment was the only battalion to attack in this heavily fortified sector. The enemy’s guns had only one focus. There was not one man amongst the Newfoundland Regiment that did not think they were about to draw their last breath. As our soldiers plodded down the slope towards Y-Ravine, encumbered by heavily laden ruck sacks, their chins tucked into their chest as if they were fighting the headwind of a blizzard, the Germans opened up with their machine guns and artillery cutting down the Newfoundlanders in a murderous crossfire. Our men began dying before they reached their own front line. Those that were fortunate enough to escape the early carnage became bottle-necked in gaps in the wire leading to no man’s land. One gap, which today is revered by the symbol of the Danger Tree had nearly 90 bodies piled up. In thirty minutes the entire battalion was wiped out in its first real test of the war. There were many tales of heroism and sorrow, suffering and pain, but to the country who asked these brave men to fight it was devastating. Every officer that led our men forward were either killed or wounded. Overall, the pride of Newfoundland lay strewn in broken bloody heaps throughout the battlefield - 310 were killed, another 374 wounded. Of those wounded, twelve more would die while countless others returned home, physically and mentally shattered, to a mourning country. Hardly a family was left untouched by the tragedy that befell the Newfoundland Regiment and the people who so proudly volunteered and supported them. Of the approximately 800 soldiers that climbed out of the trench that morning there were only 68 to answer the roll call by the next morning. Many of those counted had not gone over the top as they were designated for ration parties helplessly watching the unfolding carnage from their front line position. With no rations to carry as the assault had failed, most of them spent the rest of the day trying to bring in their wounded comrades. Victor Carew, a witness to the butchery that day wrote home to his mother and had this to say: ”It’s quite lonesome here now, all me chums are gone… I don’t much care. I am satisfied to die for my King and Country.” Victor Carew’s life was spared at Beaumont-Hamel only to fall to a sniper’s bullet at the Battle of Cambrai in November, 1917. Afterwards the Divisional Commander wrote of the Newfoundland effort: “It was a magnificent display of trained and disciplined valor, and its assault failed of success because dead men can advance no further.” Lest We Forget - Volume 15 Contents – Lest We Forget – Volume 15 World War I Baker, John . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .5 Bishop, Nathaniel . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .5 Cake, Alfred E. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .5 Chaisson, Lawrence . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .7 Christopher, William . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .7 Cobb, Christopher Theodore . . . . . . . . .7 Collier, William . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .9 Cooper, George . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .9 Dawe, Heber . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .9 Dove, Edgar . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .11 Hamen, Richard . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .11 Hammond, Arthur . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .11 Hann, Eloil . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .13 Hannon, Frank . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .13 Harbin, Wilfred . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .13 Hardy, John . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .15 Hardy, William Frank . . . . . . . . . . . . . .15 Harvey, Gerald . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .15 Head, Horatio . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .17 Head, Lewis . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .17 Herder, Arthur . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .17 Herder, Hubert . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .19 Herder, Wallace Lance . . . . . . . . . . . . .19 Hiscock, George Craniford . . . . . . . . . .19 Hoare, Edward . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .21 Holden, Patrick . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .21 Hollahan, Joseph . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .21 Holland, Michael John . . . . . . . . . . . . .23 Hollett, Levi . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .23 Holloway, Robert Palfrey . . . . . . . . . . .23 Holmes, Aubrey . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .25 Hooper, George . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .25 Hopkins, Thomas . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .25 Howlett, James Joseph . . . . . . . . . . . .27 Hudson, Peter James . . . . . . . . . . . . . .27 Hussey, Frank . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .27 Hutchins, Harold . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .29 Hynes, Richard . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .29 James, Cecil Stanley . . . . . . . . . . . . . .29 Janes, Albert . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .31 Jennings, Keyward . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .31 Jewer, Walter . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .31 Jones, Sidney . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .33 Keats, William . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .33 Kennedy, Michael Francis . . . . . . . . . .33 King, Albert Victor . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .35 King, William John . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .35 Knight, Francis . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .35 Knight, Harold Stephen . . . . . . . . . . . .37 Lacey, George . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .37 Langmead, George . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .37 Lannigan, James . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .39 Learning, Samuel . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .39 Ledingham, James . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .39 Leonard, James . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .41 Lewis, John Potter . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .41 Lidstone, William . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .41 Locke, Sidney . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .43 Maidment, Arthur E. She insisted we run this event in memory of out great-uncle, William Patrick Dohaney, Royal Newfoundland Regiment, #496. Uncle Will, age 24, was killed on July 1, 1916. The In Flanders Fields Marathon is a run for Remembrance. It honours the fallen and others who were deployed to the front lines during WWI. We met runners from Australia, New Zealand, England, Ireland, Scotland, France, Belgium, all commemorating a fallen family member. Uniquely, random race bib numbers included athletes’ names who were killed in the The Battle of the Somme. Over 200 Olympic athletes were killed in this region during the war. James Duffy, a Canadian marathoner who represented Canada in the 1912 Olympics, won the Boston Marathon in 1915, was killed in action in 1916, eight days before his 25th birthday. Proudly, my sister was chosen to wear a bib with his name to honour his sacrifice. The Marathon started in Nieuwpoort, a fishing village on the coast of Belgium where in 1916, the people of Nieuwpoort opened the flood gates to halt the German troop advancements. After running over these sluice gates we followed the River Yser all the way to Ypres, where the race finished in front of the Flanders Field Museum. Along the well organized 42.2 kilometre route we passed a welcoming bagpiper at the 5km mark, fields of poppies, beautiful farmlands and enjoyed the support of the local people. We passed the “Trench of Death” in Dixmude. The preserved trenches face the Front Line that the Belgians held for four years during the war. It is a serene and quiet part of nature today. The race then passed through the town of Steenstraete, with its memorial to the 6000 Belgian soldiers, the unfortunate victims of the first poison gas attack in 1915. Along the Course there are many international cemeteries. The marathon enters Ypres through the Menin Gate, which faces the front lines of the war. Inscribed on its wall are over 54 000 names of soldiers whose remains were never recovered, many who marched through the gates and never returned. Local farmers still discover bones of the missing as well as unexploded ordinance. Ypres was completely leveled by the war’s end and Winston Churchill recommended not rebuilding as a testament to the horror of war. The indomitable spirit of the Belgians prevailed and the rebuilt city serves as a memorial to all who helped preserve freedom. At the Menin Gate, every evening since 1928, there is a Last Post Ceremony to honour the war dead. After the marathon, we toured the battlefields, grave yards, the Newfoundland Memorial Park, and the Caribou Trail. We visited “Uncle Will’s” final resting place. For just four years how much was said, Of the raging battles, and the fallen dead, Of heroism of the fallen men, And the courage shown again and again. Where the trenches reeked of mud and filth, So detrimental to the health, Where the bullets whizzed, and the shells went by, And the living did wonder, who next would die. But onward they went, those khaki clad boys, As the wounded fell, and the dying died, The living screamed, they cursed, they prayed, The price was high, but it was paid. For every yard on each plain and hill, They stood they fought, they fought they fell, That righteousness might, forever shine, On the land of theirs, of yours, of mine. How much braver can any one man be, Than to lay down his life, for you and me, Like Christ on his cross, and good will to all. John Thomas White Born Sept. 12, 1916, son of Peter and Matilda (Dobbin) White, Point La Haye, St. Mary’s, NL. He died Aug. 26, 1976. He met and married Agnes Mulholland, from the Tedding , Falkirk, Scotland 1942, shortly after he was sent to India and Burma. He answered the call for Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit, and was in Inverness, Scotland. Later he joined RAF, 1942 - 1945. After WWII, like so many other veterans, returned bringing their overseas brides and children back to NL, and settled in the community of Cormack. So just for a moment, let us stand still, And gaze at the trench, that plain, that hill, There we can visualize the bravest of the brave, Where the monument was erected, On that unknown soldier’s grave. They lie in the soil, it’s theirs by right, Won by their courage, and their might, A place of freedom is ours, by yet, IT’S THEIRS BY RIGHT; LEST WE FORGET John Thomas White www.legionnl.ca 137 TAPPER’S OIL PO Box 1100 Torbay, NL A1K 1K7 (709) 437-6066 Town of New-Wes-Valley Incorporating the Communities of: - Valleyfield - Wesleyville - Badger’s Quay - Pool’s Island - Brookfield - Pound Cove - Templeman - Newtown Congratulations on your 15th annual Military Service Recognition Book honouring Newfoundland & Labrador’s Veterans. www.townofnewwesvalley.com T: (709) 536-2010 F: (709) 536-3481 E: [email protected] 227 Ville Marie Drive P.O. He hoped his shoes were shining, Just as brightly as his brass. And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God, forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears. "Step forward now, you soldier, How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To My Church have you been true?" I know I don't deserve a place, Among the people here. They never wanted me around, Except to calm their fears. The soldier squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't. Because those of us who carry guns, Can't always be a saint. If you've a place for me here, Lord, It needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don't, I'll understand. I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was tough. And sometimes I've been violent, Because the world is awfully rough. There was a silence all around the throne, Where the saints had often trod. As the soldier waited quietly, For the judgment of his God. But, I never took a penny, That wasn't mine to keep... Though I worked a lot of overtime, When the bills got just too steep. "Step forward now, you soldier, You've borne your burdens well. Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets, You've done your time in Hell." I had come down the chimney with presents to give, And to see just who in this home did live. I looked all about, a strange sight to see, No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree. No stocking by mantle, just boots filled with sand, On the wall hung pictures of far distant lands. With Medals and Badges, awards of all kinds, A sober thought came through my mind. For this house was different, it was dark and dreary, I found the home of a soldier, once I could see clearly. The soldier lay sleeping, silent, alone, Curled up on the floor in this one bedroom home. The face was so gentle, the room in disorder, Not how I pictured a Canadian Soldier. Who was this hero of whom I’d just read, Curled up on a poncho, the floor for a bed? I realized the families that I saw this night, Owed their lives to these soldiers who were willing to fight. Soon ‘round the world, the children would play, And grownups would celebrate a bright Christmas Day. They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year, Because of the soldiers, like the one lying here. I couldn’t help wonder how many lay alone, On a cold Christmas Eve, in a land far from home. The very thought brought a tear to my eye, I dropped to my knees and started to cry. The soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice, “Santa, don’t cry, this life is my choice”. I fight for my freedom, I don’t ask for more, My life is my God, my Country, My Corps. The soldier rolled over and drifted to sleep I couldn’t control it, I continued to weep. I kept watch for hours, so silent and still, And we both shivered from the cold night’s chill. I didn’t want to leave on that cold, dark night, This Guardian of Honour, so willing to fight. Then the soldier rolled over, with a voice soft and pure, Whispered, “Carry on Santa, It’s Christmas Day, All is Secure”. One look at my watch, and I knew he was right, “Merry Christmas my friend, and to all a Good Night”. They all sound like heroes as they display a scar And who doff their medals – most look like a star! Well, who cares for their medals and silly talk, And what’s so important on November 11th at eleven o’clock? When they march in silence to that flag draped rock, And bow their heads for two minutes, like sheep in a flock. If you had seen them in battle, they were young then too, Who went in large numbers and returned so few; You’d know that the prayers for the dead of their crew, Are not for “old men with medals” but for kids just like you! Their medals, scars and “silly” talk and even their prayers at that flag draped rock, Are something no one ever mock it’s the price they paid for no shackles or lock! So, maybe now, you’ll give second thought to the fact “they cared”, that’s why they fought – but even if your cares they did not earn, for they were never sought – their lives and scars are what they paid for the liberty we’ve got!
