Cross Country - Women
A HISTORY OF EXCELLENCE
Prior to 1998, the Sun Devil women had not competed as a team at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. That year, however, Arizona State was selected to compete and the
Sun Devils have continued to be a fixture of the national meet ever since. Arizona State’s
women competed at the NCAA Cross Country Championships for 12 consecutive years at
that point, which stands as the third-longest active streak in the nation and the eighth-best
all-time in NCAA history (see below).

Cross Country - Men
GROWING TRADITION
Similar to the women’s program, the Arizona State men had not been a mainstay of the
NCAA Championships until recent years with their first appearance coming at the 1999
meet held in Bloomington, Ind. Since then, the Sun Devil men have been in the national
field five other times, including four times under current head coach Louie Quintana. While
ASU might not have had teams in the NCAA field every year, they were represented by
strong individuals, including Aaron Aguayo, who placed ninth overall in 2006.

On the Track - Mid-Distance
SPEEDY DEVILS
Since taking over the mid-distance and distance program, Quintana’s athletes have continued to post some of the top times in the nation and the program’s history. In recent years at the mid-distances, Mason McHenry ran 1:47.76 to lead the collegiate ranks while 17
men have run faster than 3:50.50 in the 1,500m run. In addition, Darius Terry became the first Sun Devil in school history to earn an
All-American honor in the 1,500m. The men and women both have also qualified teams to compete at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field
Championships in the distance medley relay where the men finished as national runners-up in 2008.

While the entire distance program has experienced continued growth and improvement under Quintana, perhaps no area has been more
productive on the track than the steeplechase where ASU athletes have won Pac-10, NCAA and USATF Championships while also making history with one American record run and another becoming the only four-time Pac-10 Champion in the steeplechase.

twice)... the men won five in a row under Quintana, including Aaron Aguayo winning four in a row (2004-07), making him the only man in Pac-10 history to win the steeplechase four times in a career... Kyle Alcorn also won the title in 2008 as the first half of an impressive double that saw him also
win the 5,000m run... Alcorn later went on to win the NCAA title a few weeks later in Des Moines, Iowa... outside of collegiate competition, the Sun
Devils have still found success with Aguilera winning two USATF Championships (2006, 2010) and also setting the American record (9:28.02)... the
trio of Aguilera (17th in 2005), Aguayo (20th in 2007) and Alcorn (DNF in 2009) have all represented Team USA at the three most recent IAAF World
Championship events in Helsinki (Finland), Osaka (Japan) and Berlin (Germany), respectively.
On the Track - Distance
Budding Tradition
Heading into the 2006 track season, Arizona State had just one national champion at a distance over 400m as Alex Henderson won the
2-mile run in 1959. Starting in 2006, the women captured a pair of distance titles and one man won a pair as well (both in 2008). In 2006,
Amy Hastings won the indoor 5,000m run before Victoria Jackson took the outdoor 10,000m run. Alcorn won the indoor 3,000m run and
the outdoor steeplechase in 2008.

DID YOU KNOW?
• When counting honors from cross country, indoor
track and outdoor track, Amy Hastings ranks as
the second-most decorated woman in program
history with 10 career honors (3 in cross country
/ 5 in indoor track / 2 in outdoor track). Hastings
also ranks third overall (including men’s honors).
• Prior to Coach Quintana taking over the distance
program, the best team finish at the NCAA Cross
Country Championships for the men was 20th
and the women 23rd (twice). Since 2002, the
men have finished 8th, 17th and 19th while the
women have finished better than 14th six times,
including fourth place twice.
• Before 2002, a Sun Devil team (cross country
and both track & field) had earned a national
trophy (Top 4) seven total times. Since 2002,
the Sun Devils have earned 10 trophies, including four national titles (women’s indoor in 2007,
2008 / men’s indoor 2008 / women’s outdoor
2008). Two of those 10 trophies came in cross
country with the women placing fourth in both
2005 and 2007.

The men also have found great success in the world of academics as 40 different Sun Devils since 2002 have collected at least one Academic All-Pac-10 honor. All told, those men
have combined to earn 114 total honors, including 48 in cross country and 66 in track and
field, with 17 of those cross country honors and 21 track & field honors coming as selections to the first team. Recently graduated Ben Engelhardt made eight All-Academic teams
in his career, include four first-team track and field honors
Seven men have earned U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association National
All-Academic honors, including Brandon Bethke, the first man to earn the honor in cross
country and also the recipient of the 2009 Pac-10 Scholar Athlete of the Year for men’s
cross country. Three men also have earned Academic All-District honors, which is the first
step to becoming an Academic All-American.

Sun Angel Stadium - Tempe
Sun Angel Stadium has served as
the home of Sun Devil Track & Field/
Cross Country since its opening prior
to the start of the 1976 track and field
season. The Sun Devils have not only
held countless training sessions on the
nine-lane oval, but also have played
host to numerous home meets that
rank among the best in the nation yearin and year-out, including the Sun Angel Track Classic, which has attracted
many of the best in the world, including Olympians, national champions
and the future of the sport. Sun Angel
Stadium has been the home of all five
NCAA Championship teams
ASU has produced, including
the 2008 NCAA Men’s and
Women’s Indoor Champions,
while also fostering the growth
of the cross country program
that has seen the women
advance to the NCAA Cross
Country Championships 12
years in a row and bring home
a pair of Top 4 finishes (fourth
place in both 2005 and 2007),
while the men have competed
in each of the last two NCAA
Championship events.
Kiwanis Park - Tempe
Kiwanis Park is located just south of
the Arizona State campus at Baseline
Road and All-America Way in Tempe
has served as the venue for many of
the Sun Devils’ home meets, as well
as the race location for several other
local junior college meets. Measuring
125 acres, Kiwanis Park is a large,
grassy park that last hosted the ASU
Invitational during the 2008 season
and still serves as training location
for the Sun Devils with various running terrains, including flat paths and
rolling hills with grass, dirt and hard
(concrete/blacktop) surfaces. Created
in 1972 after the area was
selected by Tempe in 1969
and purchased when the Kiwanis Club donated funds for
the park’s development. The
park also includes numerous
covered picnic areas, fishing
locations and various athletic areas, including a batting
cage, soccer fields and baseball/softball diamonds, among
other venues.
Papago Park - Phoenix
Located on the north side of Tempe
Town Lake (around 2.0 miles from Sun
Angel Stadium), Papago Park in neighboring Phoenix offers numerous trails
for runners, walkers and bikers to explore. The red rocks of the park add to
the scenery surrounding the paths that
also afford views of downtown Phoenix, Tempe and the Arizona State campus and other noticeable locales of the
landscape that make up the Valley of
the Sun. Today, the park covers 1,200
acres and has numerous amenities, including picnic sites, ramadas and grills.
The park also contains fishing lagoons,
the Phoenix Zoo, the Phoenix Botanical Gardens, a fire
museum and several other
athletic facilities, including the
spring training home of Major
League Baseball’s Oakland
A’s and a golf course (Papago Golf Course). Two of east
Phoenix’s best known landmarks also are in the park,
including Hole-In-The-Rock (a
natural geological formation)
and Hunt’s Tomb, a white pyramid burial place of Arizona’s
first governor, George Wiley
Paul Hunt.
Toka Sticks Golf Course - Mesa
The newest member of the list of running locations utilized by the Sun Devils
is Toka Sticks Golf Course in Mesa. Located just outside the main entrance of
the Arizona State Polytechnic Campus,
the Sun Devils first ran at Toka Sticks
when they played host to the ASU Invitational in 2009 as part of the Desert
Twilight Cross Country Festival, which
included a single-loop, 5,000m course
that was used for eight high school
races, two collegiate races and one
community race. The course, formerly
known as Williams Air Force Base Golf
Course, originally opened in the 1940s
as a nine-hole course for Air
Force personnel before nine
more holes were added in
the mid-1980s. The course
opened to the public in December 1993 and has been
used for local high school
events in recent years.
South Mountain - Phoenix
Located 10 miles to the southwest of
the Arizona State University campus,
South Mountain covers 16,000 acres
inside the Phoenix city limits. Similar to
Papago Park, South Mountain affords
numerous trails for runners to utilize
as they traverse picturesque scenery
throughout the foothills of the mountain
range. The elevation climbs as high
as 2,330 feet on the accessible trails
and gives visitors views of much of the
Valley of the Sun, including downtown
Phoenix and Tempe. South Mountain
Park/Preserve, which annually enjoys
more than 3 million visitors for such activities as running, hiking, bicycling and horseback riding,
first opened in 1924 when local citizens purchased 13,000
acres of land for $17,000.
Since then, the Civilian Conservation Corps has built facilities in the park and continues to help maintain the land
based on the original master
plan put forth in 1935 by the
National Park Service.
Town Lake - Tempe
Located on the north side of the Arizona State University campus is Tempe
Town Lake, a 220-surface acre lake
that was first envisioned by ASU in
1966 and officially opened on November 7, 1999. Tempe Town Lake, which
sits between campus and Papago
Park, is surrounded by more than five
miles of paths that are used for running, skating, bicycling and walking.
Those paths also provide gateways
to other areas used by the Sun Devils, including the Scottsdale Greenbelt.
Many groups and organizations, including many of the Sun Devil varsity
teams, utilize the paths for
events, including the main
loop on the lake’s edge for
5k and 10k competitions. The
Lake also several amenities
surrounding it, including boat
docks and launches, picnic areas and Tempe Beach
Park, which hosts numerous events, including concerts, fairs and various other
events.
Summer Camp Site - Pinetop
Nearly 180 miles to the northeast of the
Valley of the Sun is the Pinetop-Lakeside area of Arizona that has served as
a summer training getaway for the Sun
Devil distance corps for the past few
years. Pinetop sits at an elevation of
7,200 feet (compared to 1,170 in Tempe) and has an average temperature in
the mid-80s in August. Add to that the
countless trails and paths throughout
the surrounding countryside doted with
rolling meadows and pine trees and the
Sun Devils have a very diverse location
to escape the summer heat in the Valley and being their training toward another successful season not
only in cross country, but also
on the track during the indoor
and outdoor seasons.
