Sensational champion
Callaho‘s Benicio
Bundeschampionate are always good for surprises. There are always champions that
one talkes about after they have performed in Warendorf. Callaho’s Benicio with his
rider Anna-Sophie Fiebelkorn created a stir as Bundeschampion of six-year old
dressage horses.

he final qualification of the six-year old dressage horses in Warendorf insinuated an exciting final. The day’s winner, Damon Jerome from
the Rhineland was in the lead with rider Uta Gräf
by only one-tenth of a point ahead of Callaho’s
Benicio. On Saturday Anna-Sophie Fiebelkorn rode
the liver chestnut with sovereignty and admirably
strong nerves with just as little of a lead to win the
championship title.
The strikingly marked stallion impressed from the
beginning with his almost silent and light-footed
movement with optimum mechanics and strong
expression in all three basic gaits that earned this
son of Belissimo M/Velten Third a 10,0 for his walk
and for his trot. Commentator Christoph Hess
talked of an ‘auspicious hour’. The score for the
canter with its highlights in the extensions and in
the flying changes appeared to be almost too modest. His toughest rival and reserve champion Damon Jerome by Damon Hill/Guy Laroche impressed
greatly with the quality of his training that had already earned him the reserve championship title at
the World Championships in Verden.
Three out of the four additional Hanoverians that
had qualified for the final placed in the end. The
chestnut sire Hightime by Hochadel/Walt Disney
with rider Annemarie Finger finished on an excellent sixth place after placing second in the small
final. The very noble Soliman de Hus by Sandro Hit/
Donnerhall finished in ninth position in Warendorf
after rider Christian Flamm had a convincing ride
in the qualification receiving three 9s for trot, canter and overall impression. After a victory in the
small final Christoph Kleimeyer had a solid and
very balanced performance with the chestnut gelding Diamonds Head by Don Schufro/Dalheim
which placed this pair also in ninth position. A total of 44 horses participated in the qualification
including 16 Hanoverians. Six of them placed.
Three entered the final directly. Two of three Hanoverians placed in the top five in the small final
which allowed them the participation in the final,
too.
The vintages of 2005 and 2006 of all German
breeds impressed in an outstanding manner. Compared to previous years the question why one or
the other horse was here never arose. The form on
that day is always of utmost importance with the
young, highly talented, top-quality dressage aspirants. The environmental factors are of a special
nature. The backdrop in Warendorf with its full
grandstands places an added burden on the horses nerves. The skillfulness of all riders must be
emphasized. Most riders and almost exclusively in
the final the riders demonstrated rides in accordance with the training scale, how to reach and
show suppleness. A few horses were tight at times
and especially some stallions did not handle the
change of scenery from the warm-up area to the
competition ring well at all.
Good success record in the
five-year old division
The weather suddenly became a huge burden during the final for the five-year olds. The last five
competitors had to warm-up and ride in a downpour. It affected all the favorite rides. Leading the
way was the unchallenged winner with a score of
9,4, the Oldenburg sire Fürstenball by Fürst Heinrich/Donnerhall. Ines Westendarp had already won
the qualification for the final with this sire. The
score difference to the reserve champion (9,2), the
Westphalian sire Florentinus by Florestan/London-

derry with his rider Jennifer Hoffmann had shrunk
by 0,2 points. Both defied the terrible weather
conditions and the flood of umbrellas. The last
competitor Showtime by Sandro Hit/Rotspon with
rider Dorothee Schneider appeared to be affected
by the circumstances. Even though the trot mechanics were beautiful the other gaits lacked brilliance
and the pair was unable to link up with their performance in the qualification (5th place). On the
other hand Flynch PCH by Falsterbo/Walt Disney
with rider Marcus Hermes performed as if everything was as it usually was except the somewhat
tucked tail carriage. The pair finished again in 6th
place.

Tessa Frank on Simply Nymphenburg by Sir Donnerhall/Weltmeyer set out to improve her standings. With a ninth place in the qualification the
pair just made it into the final. There they competed in third position. They received a score of 8,9
which meant the bronze medal. With a second
place in the small final champion rider Anna-Sophie Fiebelkorn earned with her second mount,
Hofliebe by Hofrat/Wie Weltmeyer, a spot in the
final on Sunday. The pair would have needed a
more powerful performance to have placed in the
top group though. The pair was in good company

Callaho’s Benicio descends from Belissimo
M a highly decorated and much desired
dressage horse producer out of the Boleroline which was Bundeschampion of four-year old stallions in 2003. We find Velten xx a
producer of exceptional competition horses
in the sixties In the sire-line of the dam’s sire
Welten Third. Benicio’s breeder Wilhelm
Stadtlander remembers, “I always believed
in the horse and was convinced of his quality from the beginning.” Benicio’s dam St. Pr.
mare Valencia is of excellent quality, too.
She was show champion in Lilienthal twice,
earned an Ib-prize on the Ratje-Niebuhr
Show in 2002 and represented the Hanoverian Association at the Federal Mare Show
in Neustadt the same year. She proved her
exceptional riding horse qualities in the
mare performance test where she received
8s and 9s. The damline of Feldland comes
from the breeding farm Tedenburg in Stellenfelde and produced the full-brothers
World Cup I to IV as well as Sini Spirit by
Espri who is a successful Grand Prix competitor with his rider Emma Kanerva from Finland.

as the second competitor with a deduction of 0,2
points for riding a wrong line. This happened more
often in the walk patterns (with the first rider it
remained unnoticed amazingly enough) and with
the five-year olds even in the trot.
57 horses were nominated and 44 actually participated in the division for six-year olds while 74
were nominated and only 59 participated in the
five-year old division. The share of Hanoverian horses was equal in both divisions. 21 horses each;
the outcome however was better: In the final qualification eight placed including Royal Classic by
Royal Highness/Florestan with Yvonne Reiser in
third place. This pair performed much better in the
qualification than in the actual final (9th place).
And so did Fiderstar by Fidertanz/De Vito with
Anne Lauterbach who seemed tired at the end of
the exhausting days in Warendorf and finished the
final in 13th place. Klarissa-Alexandra Liss rode
Dirty Dancing by Don Frederico/Rodgau into third
position in the small final which opened the door
for the final. The expressive dark bay made some
excusable mistakes which greatly influenced his
score for throughness – 9th place. He was one of
four Hanoverians that qualified for the grand final
via the small final. n
Benicio’s first public appearance was on
Verden’s stallion licensing in 2007. Licensing committee member Hans-Heinrich
Meyer zu Strohen remembers him clearly,
“His moving mechanics were even then incredibly impressive. As a two-year old he
was not quite capable of developing the
carrying power and the uphill tendency in
his movement that he shows today. This
horse is able to focus really well and is extremely rideable.”
Ian Callender from South Africa bought the
horse on the stallion sales. He operates his
facility Callaho near Christiana a sport horse
breeding centre with an emphasis on the
Hanoverian breed. He decided to bring the
youngster home first to continue raising him
and start him in his first basic training program. Last summer the stallion returned to
Germany and since then has been in training with Anna-Sophie Fiebelkorn. “This
victory is a huge surprise. It is amazing how
the stallion has developed in less than a
year with Anna as his rider and how quickly
he has learned. Anna liked Benicio from the
beginning. They developed a special relationship – and that makes all the difference,”
so Ian Callender. The former auction rider
Fiebelkorn only raves about the stallion,
“This horse is just fascinating – seven days
a week. He has such a thirst for knowledge.”
Benicio still needs to complete the 30- or
the 70-day performance test to become fully
licensed and the right to breed without restrictions but that is not the present goal.
“Benicio is not for sale and is not to be
breed either. It is our goal to achieve an unrestricted breeding license through performance. Therefore he needs 5 placings at the
S-level which we will try to achieve next
year.”n

his fellow competitors look less good. He left the show as the highest scored horse
overall.

or three-year olds the performance in Warendorf is often considered the first major stepping stone in their competition career. The focus
lies mainly on three-year old stallions. The Hanoverian Association nominated four athletes that competed as a quartet. Every time Lemony’s Nicket by
Londonderry/Weltmeyer entered the ring he was
brilliant. In the first qualification Thomas Scholz
had already presented the dark bay stallion beautifully and the judges had shown their recognition
with giving the pair top scores. The pair entered
the final with a score of 9,0, a first place-ribbon
and a buffer of 0,33 to the second-placed horse.
Conen by Chequille/Landclassic was another ath-
letic highlight with rider Karin Schulze-Topphoff.
The bay was licensed in Verden in 2010. He was
one of the spectators’ favorites in Verden and sold
to a competition barn in Hamburg. “The sire showed almost unlimited moving potential and impressed with his sovereign approach,” so the
words of breeding manager Dr. Werner Schade
about a year ago. The judges now viewed the
stallion’s performance similarly. Conen qualified
for the final with a final score of 8,42. Con Primero
by Conteur/Don Primero with rider Mette Samuli
finished the first qualification in eighth place with

mance appearing to be quite impressed by the
spectators and his surroundings. Commentator Dr.
Dietrich Plewa explained, “A three-year old horse
is still allowed to show some awareness of his surroundings. It impressed us how quickly he came
back and focused on his rider being completely on
the aids.” The jurors awarded the presentation
with 55,5 points. The guest riders Emma Karnerva
and Banjamin Werndl added 17,5 points. Lemony’s
Nicket became Bundeschampion with a total of 73
points. A German Sporthorse DSP Quatergold by
Quaterback earned silver with rider Lukas Fischer
and bronze went to the Oldenburg Daktylius OLD
by Don Romantic/De Niro with rider Katrin Burger.
Conen finished in forth place with 50,5 points in
the final part A. Dr. Dietrich Plewa commended
him, “Especially in the trot work Conen demonstrated an elasticity that has no equal.”

The judges Peter Holler, Dr. Carsten Munk and
Reinhard Richenhagen awarded the three-year old
top scores: 9,5 for his elastic trot, 9,0 for a groundcovering canter, 9,5 for his productive and relaxed
walk, 8,5 for fulfilling the criteria of the training
scale age-appropriately, 9,5 for his almost immaculate conformation and 9,5 for the harmony of
the presentation. He created uneasiness in the
grandstands at the very beginning of his perfor-

“This is how a three-year old horse is supposed
to look and how it should present itself!” You
heard this sentence in Warendorf almost every
time in context with Lemony‘s Nicket. Thomas
Scholz presented this correct and harmoniously
muscled horse with great finesse and empathy.
Breeder Dietmar Eckardt from Burgwedel did not
leave anything to chance with this dark bay. “I
wanted to breed a dressage horse with my state’s
premium mare Wildflower by Weltmeyer which is
a good jumper as well. So I selected Londonderry.” Daughter Julia successfully competed in the
jumper division at the German Championships
for Juniors with half-brother Amadeus by As Di
Villagana. Now the pair competes at the S-level.
“Lemony’s Nicket was special from the beginning,” the breeder who used to compete in eventing up to the S-level says about the colt. “He
grew up with us. He is a good jumper. We started
him under saddle at the beginning of the year.

earned 52 points after the second part of the final.
She received 16,5 points from the guest riders and
finished winning the bronze medal. De Luxe by
Don Crusador/Weltruhm was the third Hanoverian.
Lena Berwe rode the mighty black mare. The pair
missed the entrance into the second round by only
0,5 points and had to be content with a forth
place. The Rhineland mare Cassiopaya by Cassini
Boy Junior/Lanciano won gold with Jana Freund
and Star von Afrika OLD by San Amour/Harvard
won silver with rider Andrea Müller-Kersten.
Four-year old stallions
Three out of five candidates in the final of fouryear old stallions carried the Hanoverian foal
brand. All were licensed. Hofmarschall V by
Hotline/D’accord with rider Jennifer Hofmann finished the qualification with a score of 8,67, which
remained unsurpassed by fellow competitors. The
experts rewarded his exquisite and rhythmical
walk with the top score of 10,0 in the second part.
His trot work and his fulfillment of the criteria of
the training scale in accordance with his age as
well as the harmony of his presentation received a
9,0 each. The dapper black was in the lead again
with a total of 54 points. The guest riders judge the
feeling the horse gives to a rider. It is a decisive
criterion for a medal.
Hofmarschall V did not measure up to the competition pressure. He quit several times under guest
rider Emma Karneva. Only 15 points from the
guestriders led to a bronze medal for Hofmarschall
V. Celle’s state stud sire Don Darius by Don Frederico/Markus Deak xx was one of the final three with
his rider Mike Habermann. The bay shining star
completed his performances with concentration
and great ease. The judges awarded him 52,5
points, the guest riders additional 17,5 points
which earned him the silver medal. Dantander Hit
by Dancier/Sandro Hit collected a total of 50
points. Fifth place for him and his rider Sandra
Frieling. Catoo by Con Air/Caletto won gold with
rider Marcus Suchalla.
Nine riding horses qualified for the first part of the
final for four-year old mares and geldings. Heartbeat by Hotline/Wolkentanz with rider Jan-Dirk
Giesselmann was one of the three finalists with 52
points. The gelding that will also be a participant in
the 125th elite auction impressed with his elastic
and supple trot movement. The guest riders had
added 18 points: bronze for Heartbeat. Dark Legend by Duino/Londonderry with rider Anna-Sophie Fiebelkorn finished in forth position with 51,5
points. Sandra Frieling rode Saphir by Samarant/
Werlindo into eighth position with a total of 49,5
points. Saphir will also be available at Verden’s elite auction. The Westphalian Sungai by Sorento became Bundeschampion with his rider Ann-Christin
Wienkamp; silver was awarded to the Westphalian
mare Damon’s Delorange by Damon Hill with rider
Helen Langehanenberg. n

Top scores for

he overall statistics reflect a much more encouraging result for Germany’s largest Warmblood
breed association though. The Hanoverians entered the last day of the Bundeschampionate with
much hope. After all nine out of 32 horses carried
the Hanoverian brand in the final test for five-year
olds. Eva Bitter had the largest share in this as she
managed to qualified all four horses for the finals.
Only two horses qualified for the second round after the first round of the decisive special jumper
class on Sunday morning. She received the top
score of the day with Argelith Squid by Salito/Gibraltar, 9,2. Earlier on the pair had won the final
qualification with a score of 8,8. The gelding that
jumped with extreme light-footedness while maintaining an outstanding overview earned the bronze medal with a score of 8,6 in the first round on
Sunday. Cornet’s Balou by Cornet Obolensky/Con-
tinue out of Paul Schockemöhle’s breeding program won the Bundeschampionate for five-year
olds with his rider Patrick Stühlmeyer who presented the stallion very skillfully. A 9,1 in the first and
a 9,0 in the second round gave him the well-deserved winning score of 18,1. Henrik von Eckermann
rode the Westphalian stallion Forchello into second place. With scores of 9,1 and 8,9, the reserve
champion also impressed with very consistent performances. This son of For Pleasure/Collin L (breeder: Alexander Onischenko) appeared rather lightfooted and adroit in spite of his considerable size.
Compliments to the rider
The stallion Stakko by Stakkato/Embassy was the
second best Hanoverian finishing in ninth place
with rider Maurice Tebbel. He convinced with a
most beautiful and secure first round (8,7). A knocked down rail in the second round reduced the
score to 7,8. A compliment to the rider: Even
though he is still young Maurice Tebbel proven in
Warendorf numerous times that he is able to present young horse very well. We also want to mention the sire Stalido by Stakkato/Calido finishing
tenth. He had a very pleasing first round under his
rider Eva Bitter that was scored with only an 8,4,
which denied the pair the participation in the second round. One of the very few results many
spectators did not agree with! We still need to add
the fate of the winner of this year’s Hanoverian
Jumper Horse Championships. Celle’s state stud
sire Stanley by Stakkato/Loredo with rider Eva Bitter had an excellent round in the small final on
Saturday which meant the victory in this class.
With a score of 9,5 they qualified for the final. Two
rails down in the first final round on Sunday prevented the pair from placing any better than in
28th position.
The success of Hanoverians in the division for sixyear olds was rather moderate. The best representative of the breed was Singapore by Stakkato/
Glenfiddich finishing on eleventh place with rider
Tobias Meyer. The gelding just missed the entrance
into the all-deciding second round with a score of
8,5. The mare Toulouse became the new Bundeschampion with rider Henrik von Eckermann after
a well-received jump-off. Representing the Jumper
Horse Breed Association Oldenburg-International
Toulouse by Toulon only just qualified for the second round with a score of 8,7. Toulouse was able
to play out all her strengths in the jump-off with
her skillful rider. She did not only please Paul
Schockemöhle with a faultless round in 41.24 seconds. He was able to celebrate his second title as
breeder on this day. Hanoverian genes also influenced this victory through Ganymed, the dam’s
sire. The mare had already attracted attention at

last year’s Bundeschampionate finishing in ninth
place in the division for five-year olds. The Westphalian Comme il faut by Cornet Obolensky/Ramiro became reserve champion. The son of legendary
Ratina Z received the absolute highest score of the
day, 9,4 for his first round with Franz-Josef Dahlmann who is a very skillful rider. The stallion (breeder: Ludger Beerbaum and the deceased Dietrich
Schulze) had to give precedence to the championess in the jump-off who led by more than a second. With a score of 8,6 the Holstein Cashew by
Casal/Sandro just made it into the jump-off with
his skilled rider Johannes Ehning who showed off
Cashew’s talent in the jump-off riding the third
fastest and faultless round and finishing in third
place. Looking at the event through Hanoverian
eyes the performances of Elton by Embassy/Graf
Grannus (14th place) and Graf’s Stakkato by Graf
Top/Stakkato (22nd place) are worth mentioning,
too. Especially the Hanoverian Lemwerder by
Lordanos/Goldfever had bad luck. The state stud
sire from Moritzburg attracted attention last year
as a five-year old when he finished in sixth place.
This year the stallion won two qualifying classes in
Warendorf and then had two rails down in the first
final round which dropped him and rider Philipp
Schober down to the 25th position. A trend that
reaches far beyond the borders of individual breed
associations was once again clearly visible in Warendorf. The times of seeing only Holstein horses in
the lead of jumper competitions seem over. All big
breed associations today are able to produce excellent jumpers in larger numbers. Competition stimulates business. An analysis of the overall results for
Hanoverian horses produces a more positive picture than the statistics of medals alone. 10 out of
27 five-year old Hanoverians that participated in
Warendorf qualified for the final. A success relation
that no other breed association had! We saw five
out of 22 six-year olds on Sunday afternoon. An
interpretation from a breeding standpoint reflects
an even more positive result for Stakkato: No other
sire saw so many descendants participate. In the
five-year old division no less than 15 participated;
nine of which qualified for the final. In the six-year
old division ten descendants participated and six
qualified for the final. The 1998 Bundeschampion
and the 1999 Reserve Champion can be called the
dominating jumper horse producer of this year’s
Bundeschampions. n

It rained medals for the German team at the European Championships for Event Riders in Luhmühlen:
team gold in front of France and Great Britain and all three individual medals! The team members were

he Westphalian Priemus by Primeur’s As/Foxiland xx became Bundeschampion of the fiveyear olds. His only 17-year old rider Nils Trebbe
presented him skillfully. The mare Cavallandra
FBW by Cavallieri xx/Rainbow from Württemberg
with rider Michael Jung, the dual European Champion, finished in second place and the Holstein
mare Chica mia by Clearway/Cassini with Dirk
Schade was third.

Latego S by Laptop/Pinkus with Stephanie Böhe
was the best Hanoverian finishing in 15th place. A
rather meager result considering the fact that
eight Hanoverians were amidst 47 participants in
the introductory class on Thursday and some of
them looked very promising! For instance Nexxus,
a son of Celle’s state stud sire Nobre xx and out of
a dam by Ramiro won with the deserved score of
8,8 the second division with his rider Johann-Philipp Bechstein. The stallion was eliminated a day
later because of stops in the qualification round.
Another favorite experienced the same fate: Chracker Jack by Concinales xx/Esculdo II with Andreas
Dibowski was in third place in the first division on
Thursday but was eliminated on Friday because of
a fall at the water.
The result for Hanover was slightly better in the
six-year old division. Seven horses represented the
breed association being more than 25 percent of
the 26 participants. Three of them finished in the
final day in the top ten. They were however unable
to do anything against the champion Rocana by
Ituango xx/Carismo, a German Sport Horse with a
competitive edge. This rather small but very sympathetic mare convinced in all three disciplines with
her rider Michael Jung. Royal Sun by Rocket Star/
Esprit from the Rhineland followed in second place
with his rider Kai-Steffen Meier. The Bavarian mare
Lena by Seigneur d’Alleray xx/Landprinz finished in
third place with Malin Petersen from Sweden.
Second place after cross-country
Bad luck for Andreas Dibowski who had falls with
-two horses at the water which led to their elimination! He placed forth with Eskadia by Eskudo/
Groom Dancer xx. It was the best result for the
Hanoverian breed. In addition to good performances in dressage and jumping Eskadia attracted attention placing second on the cross-country
course. High Speedy by High Spirits/Rebell Z III finished in sixth place with rider Harald Engelberth.
The mare won the dressage part with a remarkable score of 9,0. Nadine Marzahl rode Eclair
d’Amour by Escudo/Natiello xx into tenth position.
There are some exciting trends visible in the sport
of eventing even though Hanoverian event horses
did not bring home many medals compared to
other years. The field of competitors was rather homogeneous because the qualification demands
were raised for five-year old horses. The large number of extremely beautiful horses in this division
was remarkable. Event horses “made in Germany”
have secretly become a hot sales commodity because of the numerous international successes of
German event riders during the past years. Spectacular foreign sales over the past weeks like Euroriding Butts Leon from Andreas Dibowski or SaatenUnions Charlie Weld from Kai Rüder are not the
only proof. Top rising event horses were high in
demand in Warendorf, too. n

in a World Cup-jumper class after one time

Oebisfelde) into third position in the first
qualification of the SML-Tour in Paderborn/
Germany. The pair finished fifth in a twophase jumper class.

Evelyne Blatonfrom from Belgium is one of
the best and most accomplished female competitors. She rode Haruba by Acord II/Grannus (breeder: Wilhelm Schwierking, Barver)
into second place in the Grand Prix at the CSI
in Maisons-Laffitte, France. The pair had already placed third in the qualification.
Caresse Caresse by Cento/Sandro (breeder: Dietrich
Schulze, Wedemark) flawlessly finished the
first qualification of the Youngster Tour at the
CHIO in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The sevenyear old placed second with her rider Ludger

Magic Man (VA)
The show ‘Champions Welcome’ took place
one week prior to the traditional ‘Masters’ in
Calgary, Canada. Ben Asselin rode Magic

Emmendorf) into fifth position in a speed
class. The pair finished an opening jumper
class in third place at the Masters the following week.

Brigitte Wittig rode Blind Date by Breitling W/
Donnerhall (breeder: Margarethe Klare, Maasen) to victory in the Grand Prix at Leudelange/Luxembourg. The nine-year old chestnut
mare has not been beat at the highest dressage level yet.
Desperados (VA)
In addition to the European Championships
the horse show in Rotterdam/The Netherlands offered classes for riders U25 where
Desperados by De Niro/Wolkenstein II (breeder: Herbert Schütt, Hemmoor) and Kristina
Sprehe perforemed brilliantly. The pair won
Intermediaire II and with that laid the foundation for Germany’s team victory. The privately owned sire won the following Grand Prix
unchallenged.
Diva Royal (VA)
Diva Royal by Don Frederico/Warkant (breeder: Heinz Braul, Lehrte) and rider StellaCharlott Roth were members of the German
team of riders U25 in Rotterdam. The pair finished in fifth place in Intermediaire II. As
team members they won gold. They placed
third in the Grand Prix for riders between 16
and 25 years of age.

by Tinne Vilhelmson from Sweden was the
shining star of the Grand Prix freestyle in

The horse show in Breslau offered classes for
young riders. Donna Romma by Don Frederico/Warkant (breeder: Hans-Joachim Quirling,
Neustadt) with her rider Elin Aspnas from
Sweden won the freestyle. The pair came in
forth in the individual test and third in the
team test.

finished in forth place amidst a prominent
group of participants at the next event, a
CIC** in Langenhagen.

Lapitho
The competition was tough at the CIC* in
Langenhagen. Lisette Ahrens rode Lapitho by
Laptop/Eisenherz (breeder: Heinrich Katt,
Gnarrenberg) into forth place of the first division. Before going into the stadium the pair
was in a promising second position but four
penalty points in stadium dropped them
down to forth place.
Leo M (VA)
The event in Bad Harzburg has a good reputation which is reflected by the number and
the caliber of competitors. Leo M by Le Primeur/Weltmeyer (breeder: Günter Möhring,
Bad Driburg) with rider Anna Nilsson from
Sweden placed second behind Ingrid Klimke
at the CIC*. The pair finished in forth place at
a two-star competition in Breda/The Netherlands.

Das Finale des Tesch Inkasso Cups in Münster
wurde zum Hannoveraner Triumph. Siegerinnen dieser renommierten Prüfung für Grand
Prix-Nachwuchspferde waren Diva Royal v.
Don Frederico/Warkant (Z.: Heinz Braul, Lehrte) und Dorothee Schneider. Zweite wurde
die Breitling W/Donnerhall-Tochter Blind
Date (Z.: Margarethe Klar, Maasen) mit Brigitte Wittig, gefolgt von Floris v. Fürstenreich/
Drosselklang (Z.: Martin Otten-Willers, Kutenholz), der von Oliver Oelrich geritten wurde. Während Diva Royal von der Elite-Auktion
im Frühjahr 2006 stammt, wurde der neunjährige Hengst Floris auf dem Hengstmarkt
entdeckt. „Diva Royal ist immer ein Genuss“,
strahlte Dorothee Schneider nach ihrem Sieg.
Para-Equestrians
Im Juni 2009 hatte Familie Roth die Stute für
Tochter Stella-Charlott gekauft. Seitdem bildet Dorothee Schneider die Schwarzbraune
aus und trainiert auch Stella Charlott Roth.
2010 gehörte die Junge Reiterin zur siegreichen deutschen Europameisterschafts-Equipe. In Zukunft wird die Stute wieder von Stella Charlott Roth geritten. Das nächste Ziel
der beiden ist das Piaff-Förderpreis-Finale in
Stuttgart. Es wird spannend zu beobachten,
wie sich die Finalisten des Tesch Inkasso
Cups weiter entwickeln. In den vergangenen
Jahren sind bereits einige internationale
Stars dieser Nachwuchs-Serie entsprungen,
darunter der Sieger von 2009, Dablino v. De
Niro/Wanderbursch II (Z.: Weert-Arnold
Sweers, Krummhörn), der mit Anabel Balkenhol bei den Weltreiterspielen in Kentucky zum
deutschen Bronze-Team gehörte. n

Moorsele/Belgium. The pair placed second in
the freestyle. Together with the German team
they got the bronze medal behind the team
from Great Britain and the Danish team. Dr.
Angelika Trabert was another German team
member with her Hessian mount Ariva-Avanti by Alabaster/Florestan (breeder: ZG Engel,
Pepo Puch from Austria was successful, too.
He became the individual European Champion in grade Ib and won silver in the freestyle
with Good Boy’s Feeling by Grand Cru/World
Cup (breeder: Dr. Sönke Tobaben, Eschborn).
Jose Letartre from France enjoyed earning
the bronze medal in the individual competition grade III with his ten-year old mount Warina by Weltruhm/Latent (breeder: Klaus Kubelke, Hittbergen). The Cadre Noir from
Saumur bought the horse on Verden’s November auction in 2005. n

(breeder: Hans Brüning, Garbsen) celebrated
her second two-star victory of the year in Bad
Harzburg/Germany. It was a start-to-finish
victory for the seven-year old with her rider
Sara Algotsson Ostholt in the first event. The
pair unfortunately had one rail down on the
stadium course in Harzburg which cost them
the victory: 2nd place at the CIC**.
Neuburg
The international event competition in Langenhagen was a feast for Hanoverian horses.
Neuburg by Newcomer/Grand Cru (breeder:
Hans-Heinrich Philipps, Wunstorf) and Christin Tidow placed third finishing the event on
their dressage score in the second division of
the CIC*.
Phyllis (VA)
Phyllis by Pius Paccelli/Natiello xx (breeder:
Werner Kaiser, Luesen) won the first division
of the CIC* in Langenhagen with rider Julia
Savonlathi from Finnland. The pair was in
eighth position after dressage. They did not
add any penalty points to their dressage
score of 50. n

The foal with the name Figo V and head number 312 sold for Euro 71,000.00 being the
highest price of the 37 th Elite Foal- and Broodmare Auction in August.

T
he powerfully moving liver chestnut Figo V by
Fidertanz/De Vito (breeder: Gerd Pigge,
Lastrup) was one of the favorites right from the
beginning. He has a very prominent pedigree and
also exceptionally high overall quality with respect
to conformation and movement. Three right brothers with the names Figo I, II and III have already
been sold on Verden’s foal auctions for top prices.
Figo I is now an licensed sire and is called Fiderstar. Another right brother is also licensed: Foundation creates a sensation at the stallion station of
Schockemöhle. He charmed the German/French
group of buyers from the Lake Geneva at the stallion licensing in 2010. Ariane Pourtavaf who looks
after the interests of the buying group, remarks:
“The group of buyers, some being successful at the
Grand-Prix level, have had positive experiences
with former auction foals that now are very successful competitors.” Satisfied customers that have
learned to place their trust in the quality of the
foals that are sold on Verden’s auctions over the
years have now bought the highest priced foal – it
can not get any better!
The overall auction result however was mixed. The
auction started off slowly on Friday. A large number of foals did not receive a bid at all. The entire
process was altogether satisfactory on Saturday.
Sunday ended with a strong finish after a slow beginning. The statistics reveal that 291 foals were
offered for sale and 261 were actually sold. These
obtained an average price of Euro 6,908.00 – almost the same average as last year when the average price was Euro 6,885.00 and 2009 with Euro
6,913.00. This development can only be viewed in
connection with the entire economy. For three years now the financial crisis has determined the
headlines and if the stock market drops to an all
time low right on the day when the foal auction is
about to begin it does not encourage possible prospective buyers. On the other hand this auction has
shown that especially during critical times quality

How do we define better quality? We must differentiate between foals bred for dressage and foals
bred for jumping. Next to Totilas whose two foals
obtained top prices, Euro 37,000.00 (sold to England) and Euro 33,000.00 (sold to Italy) there is
more than one exceptional foal producer out there
whose name as sire will pretty much guarantee a
high sale price. This is a good development as we
should not breed by names only. The emphasis
must be on trying to improve the quality. With respect to dressage horses the emphasis lies on the
movement. The trot must be developed out of an
active hind leg that is placed under the center of
gravity. Later the hind leg must be capable of carrying weight. The impulse out of the hind leg must
be carried forward upward through an elastic
back. Higher and yet rhythmical and ground-covering movement in front is in demand. Many
high-priced foals conformed with this ideal regarding the movement like Firework by Floriscount/
Lauries Crusador xx (breeder/exhibitor: Erika Lütjen, Grasberg), who sold on Friday for Euro
24,000.00 (highest sale price of the day) to Switzerland or Dior by Diamond Hit/Londonderry (breeder/exhibitor: Christian Thelker, Venne) who sold at
the beginning of day two for Euro 30,000.00 to
Bavaria or Finja by Fidertanz/Wolkentanz II (breeder/exhibitor: Heinz Lenter, Meppen) who was one
of the highest priced fillies of the collection with a
sale price of Euro 20,000.00 together with Allerfeinste by Ampere/Lauries Crusador xx (breeder/
Bakony by Balou du Rouet/Calido became the highest
priced jumper foal with a sale price of Euro 23,500.00.
exhibitor: Andrea Janssen, Neuschoo) who sold for
Euro 26,000.00 to Sweden.
Compact price-structure
Observers were under the impression that the auction process was speedier and the overall demand
higher for foals with jumper pedigrees. A total of
94 jumper foals sold at an average price of Euro
6,500.00. The price structure was more compact.
Very good prices were paid for desired qualities
but not like the top prices obtained by foals with
dressage pedigrees.
This auction has once again proven that the pedigree is of utmost importance in foals with jumping
talent. Good prices were paid as a rule if the foals
showed four generations of jumper blood, successful offspring out of the dam line were listed in the
auction catalog and the youngster moved powerfully. Bakony by Balou de Rouet/Calido (breeder:
Barbara Ivemeyer; exhibitor: Ernst Ivemeyer, Bad
Essen) complied with this ideal. He became the top
selling jumper foal. A breeder from the Bremen
area bought him for Euro 23,500.00. Another typical example was Schokolade ZH by Stakkato/Cassini II being a granddaughter of the famous state’s
premium mare April Love ZH which consistently
delivers excellent auction candidates for her breeder and owner Horst Zöllmer, Heiligenthal. She sold
for Euro 21,000.00 to Italy.
An export rate of 44 percent was once again a
support pillar for the auction. Buyers from 17 different countries were successful. The emphasis

seems to change every year. This year Russia dominated purchasing 34 foals exclusively for jumping.
18 foals found a new home in Italy, 15 in Great
Britain and 16 in Sweden. Only two foals sold to
the United States that reflects the current horse
market reports from North America. The Hanoverian Association gains from the current economical
growth in the so-called threshold countries where
horses breeding and the riding sport is being built
up while the financial crisis in many industrial
countries has a negative impact on the horse market.
Export-oriented broodmare auction
The auction for broodmares was also strongly export-oriented. Nineteen mares were offered for
sale and sold. Thirteen left Germany. The highest
priced broodmare was state’s premium mare Helena by His Highness/Weltadel (breeder: Hans-Dieter
Mindermann, Grasberg; exhibitor: Siegfried Pilz,
Lilienthal). She is in foal to Totilas. This combinati-
on was worth Euro 42,000.00 to a good customer
from the United States. The jumper mares from this
collection were high in demand as buyers from
Russia and a delegation of the Royal Guards from
Morocco pursued the same interest. Three of four
jumper mares sold for Euro 30,000.00 and more.
Manfred Schäfer the President of the Hanoverian
Association resumed, “We witnessed that the auction took very different courses throughout the
three days. The demand and sale of jumper foals
was satisfactory. The supply of dressage foals was
too high. Foals with the desired movement obtained good prices. Unfortunately we had a large
contingent of foals that did not fulfill the demands
with respect to the quality of movement. There was
hardly any interest in those.” It became clear that
at present it is not easy to market almost 300 foals
by means of an auction. “We shall reevaluate the
selection process for foals,“ said the president. n

Comment
We are able to derive very important data for the
breed and the marketing from the course and the
result of an auction. The 37th Elite Foal and Broodmare Auction delivered clear indications. First the
good news: There is high demand for high-quality
foals and the willingness to pay high prices is there, too. It becomes more difficult with the demand
for the mediocre foals. Offering such a considerable number of foals, 300 in total, is unique and with
respect to the market situation rather brave. However we tried to support the breeders and increased the number of foals for sale because of the
foal market that is becoming increasingly more
and more difficult. Even though the triangular relation between “the number of foals : the quality :
the customer demand” has to be in balance the
idea of supporting our breeders will always take
precedence.
In future however we will have to even more seriously consider the continuous trend in the behavior of prospective buyers when selecting foals. It is
understandable that buyers want the highest possible security when purchasing foals. With respect
to health attributes the quality of the conformation
becomes a very decisive factor. Correct and wellangled limbs and hooves are a must for a successful sale. Those who do not pay enough attention to
the breeding or to the care will jeopardize their
marketing chances right from the start.

balanced and powerful movement. That does not
only include a spectacular trot but also a good
canter and especially a solid walk. The conception
of buyers corresponds with the breeding guidelines of the Hanoverian Association.
He who wants to buy a foal must carefully watch
the dam. Better dams usually have better foals.
Buyers did just that this time. Foals of dams were
often preferred if the dam had received the state’s
premium award or had a good performance test
result and in addition performance records from
the damline were listed. In general this is not new
knowledge but it was clearly confirmed at this auction that it is regaining importance.
The fact that mares hold a substantial share in the
breeding success was clear to all the buyers of the
broodmares that were offered at this auction. The
price structure for mares surpassed all expectations. Foreign interest was great exclusively from
countries which work very closely with the German
Hanoverian Association. The foreign strategy of the
Hanoverian Association in this market segment of
broodmares presents impulses for the future. In
spite of difficult phases and at times unsatisfying
results for our breeders this foal and broodmare
auction overall delivered good opportunities provided that we actively adjust to the above described

Inspection tour in
North America
The inspection tour of the American Hanoverian
Society took board member Konrad Böth to very
different inspection sites. His result, “The breeders in
the United States are enthusiastic!”

2 broodmares were performance tested, 45
mare inspections took place, eleven stallions
were evaluated and 59 foals presented and registered on the inspection tour through North America. The sites and hosts were very different but they
all had one thing in common: “They all stand to
their Hanoverians,” said Konrad Böth. “The top is
not widespread but the breeders are delighted
with their horses and spend a lot of time with their
animals.”

The journey started with a visit to the renowned
Hilltop Farm where mare and stallion inspections
and a mare performance test were on the agenda.
The following stallions were licensed: Pikko del
Cerro HU by Pik L./Rohdiamant (breeder: Anne
Sparks), Eclipsed by Color by Escudo/Federalist out
of the Breeding Program of the Royal Canadian
Mounted Police and Sir James by Sir Donnerhall/
Feiner Stern (breeder: Matthias Böckermann, Damme). Summer Solstice by Sunlight xx/Daidalos
(breeder: Otto Rudolf Fuchs, Meinerzhagen) received an above average result and greatly impressed
with her excellent walk in the mare performance
test. The best mare of the show became Serenade
GGF by Sir Donnerhall/Wolkenstein II (breeder: Rachel Ehrlich; owner: Douglas and Lisa Greene).
We saw the most striking mare of the entire trip on
a small but wonderful inspection at Riverhouse in
Piermont, NH: Wait and See by Wolkentanz/Wanderbursch II (breeder: Friedrich Nehuis, Aurich)
convinced in the mare performance test as well as
in the inspection receiving above average scores.
Foals of above average quality were also presented in the modern facility of the breeding farm.
The stallion Dreammaster by Dimaggio/Dream of
Glory (owner: Dreamcatcher Meadows, Pemberton, BC) was presented for inspection at Rainbow
Equus Meadows in Lincoln, CA. This stallion was
bred in Great Britain and was licensed because of
his exterior and his basic gaits but especially because of his successful performance record in Slevel dressage classes.
The commission inspected a 15-year old Hessian
sire called Freestyle by Florestan/Parademarsch
(breeder: Heinz Acker, Bad Sassendorf) in Canada
on Dreamscape Farm. The black stallion impressed
with his beautiful face and his convincing and
elastic trot movement. His result: Licensed! His
own competition record, good offspring and a high
dressage index supported the result. 16-year old
jumper sire Novalis by Jus de Pommes/Ramiro a
successful KWPN-sire was also licensed just as the
Oldenburg sire Rubinus by Rubinstein/Rouletto. n

White Queen by World Diamond O, a halfsister to Rhineland sire For Compliment, became second. Breeder Oleg Sheiko purchased
the dam Contiga in 2006. La Conti being the
oldest of her daughters and born in Russia is
one of the top five dressage horses in this
country with her rider Nikolai Nikolaew. She
was also presented on the Hanoverian Day.

The fifth Hanoverian day at
Elitar
The breeding farm Elitar near Moscow was
the host of the Hanoverian Day for the fifth
time. Dr. Ludwig Christmann from the German Hanoverian Association had registered
seven foals beforehand. Five by Oleg Sheiko
at Elitar and two at Dmitriy Litsov in Shakhovskaya. Most foals were descendants of
Elitar’s breeding stallion World Diamond O by
Austria
First central inspection
The first central Hanoverian inspection took
place in Wallern, Austria on the breeding
farm Lindhof which is owned by Family Seifert mid August. The idea to organize this
event was born during a breeders’ meeting in
the spring. Family Seifert immediately made
White Star/Matcho AA (breeder: Matthias
Ohmen, Stinstedt). Three foals belonged to
the first vintage of the typy, dual-talented
Emporio Armani by Embassy/Don Juan (breeder: Herbert and Ute Steuber, Garstedt). A riding horse class was scheduled in addition to
a mare inspection. This class was in high demand as there are not many opportunities to
present three your olds under saddle in Russia. Eight horses participated. The spectators’
favorite was Sandro Marinero by St. Moritz/
Cordoba (breeder: Frank and Nicole Pistner,
Bad Homburg). He also impressed the com-

quality of all eleven foals presented was certainly remarkable. Dr. Ludwig Christmann
and Toni Kornes, the President of the Hanoverian Breeding Club Bavaria, represented
the German Hanoverian Association. The
question of incorporating Austrian Hanoverian breeders was heavily discussed during the
inspection trip. The idea to incorporate the
Austrian Hanoverian breeders in the breeding club of Bavaria was taken up well. There
are many activities and offers in Bavaria that
would certainly be of great interest to Austrian breeders; for instance a participation in
the foal auction in Langenau or selection sites in Bavaria for Verden’s auction program.

The quality of the presented horses matched
the magnificent ambiance. Five mares were
presented for inspection. A five-year old
daughter by Danone/Hohenstein from the
breeding farm Neumann-Ulrich, Altlengbach
received the highest scores. This mare proved

he Family Lührs-Behnke farm is situated
in Borstel near Verden. One would be
able to see the property of Lührs-Behnke
from the office of the Hanoverian Association
if the trees on the racetrack near the Niedersachsenhalle were not so tall. The agricultural
business was founded in 1654 and has remained in family ownershipsince then. Today
45 hectares of the classical feed growing
farm are being utilized, 20 hectares as arable
land, 25 hectares as green fields. There is an
indoor riding ring and more than 50 box
stalls, 20 of which Holger Schmezer leased in
a separate wing since 1979 for his own business until he took over the responsibilities as
federal trainer for Germany’s dressage riders.
Family Lührs-Behnke includes two senior
chefs being Friedrich and Jeanette and two
sons Jan and Hinni. 39-year old Hinni took
over the farm after completing his agricultural studies his profession in the feed industry
and a doctorate degree in Kiel. His father
Friedrich supports him as best he can as Hinni took on another challenge in early 2010.
He is the breeding manager for the DQHA,
the German Quarter Horse Association.
Location Advantage Verden
The dam lines that are still cherished today
moved into the facility after WWI and – as it
was custom then – were used for farming but
also as riding horses. “Riding horse attributes
were taken into serious consideration when
breeding in the vicinity of Verden because of
the closeness to the cavalry,” Dr. Hinni LührsBehnke reports. “Verden’s auctions have taken place practically in front of our front door
since 1949. Therefore the transition to breed
modern riding horses was not difficult for
us.” Mother Jeanette was employed as auction rider for several years. Friedrich LührsBehnke took on the responsibility as the first

tant president in the Regional Association
Stade and then in the entire Board of the Hanoverian Association. He rode and trained his
own horses until they were sold mostly at the
age of four. Jan Lührs-Behnke has collected
1st place-ribbons in the dressage ring. And
what about young Hinni? “I preferred playing
handball.” Breeding horses caught his interest very much though. As a teenager he
made his first move in the horse direction “
At the age of 15 I bought my first mare from
my dad with the money that I had received
for my confirmation.” Antoinette by Absatz
bred to Wenzel delivered twins: A small colt
that I called Willi Winzig (Tiny) and a larger
filly I called Waltraut Wuchtig (Heavy). Waltraut Wuchtig became his first broodmare
and delivered 18 live foals in 18 years of
breeding.
The dam lines of Family Lührs-Behnke have
been well bred over decades. They are highly
successful: The mare Goldbad by Goldfalk/
Valentino xx received a DLG-award and became Reserved Family Champion together
with her daughters Antoinette and Antonia
(both by Absatz) at the Federal Mare Show in
Münster-Handorf 1979. Antoinette and her
daughters Wenzelette and Wenette (both by
Wenzel I) became Champion Family in 1988
at the Ratje-Niebuhr Show and with that the
Best Family of the entire Hanoverian breeding area. Wenzelette was awarded the title
of 2nd Reserve Champion Mare at the Federal Mare Show in 1990. “It is our goal to
breed a riding horse of beautiful type with
supple movements that flow through the entire body; a horse with a positive attitude towards humans,” Dr. Hinni Lührs-Behnke summarizes. “ We believe to achieve this through
the use of Thoroughbred blood.” The passionate breeder-family cannot be discouraged
by prejudices. “Wenzel I greatly influenced
our lines. He had to overcome many public
opinion reservations. Many of his descendants had the reputation to be unrideable,” said the junior chef. “The bad reputation of some Thoroughbreds did not upset us.
It is important to see for yourself what fits!”
Competitions deliver the answer
Competition successes proved that the
course taken was the right one. Potomac advertises for the farm. This son of Prince Orac
xx/Wenzel I became a member of Germany’s
A-cadre for dressage riders with Susanne Lebek in 2009. The pair competed at the European Championships in Windsor, Great Britain. A bronze medal with the team was the
reward for the first championship nomination. Full-brother Princeton also placed in
dressage competitions at S-level. Half-sister
Senorita by Sugunas xx climbed up the career
ladder in Great Britain winning Grand Prix
classes in dressage. Waltraut Wuchtig delivered Muchacho by Maurice. Muchacho won
team gold at the European Championships
for Young Riders with Jan Andreas Viebrock
or Dirk Viebrock. Today he successfully competes at the S-level in dressage under Maren
Kühn. Prince of Joy by Prince Orak xx out of
Antoinette and Allernixe by Achenbach/Wenzel also won state championship titles and
the North German Championships for Young
Riders. Capriciella out of Wen-Shan by Wenzel/Cordoba participated in the European
Championships for Juniors in Broholm, Denmark with rider Anna Zibrandtsen and won
two individual bronze medals in addition to
team silver. Full-brother Cognito is victorious
in dressage classes at the S-level and placed
with Alexandra Samson-Sager in Redefin in
an Intermediaire I a few months ago. This
year Wen-Shan had a filly by Likoto xx. Antonia has not only delivered the successful jumper Leitsatz and the Bundeschampionat- finalist Lümmel (both by Leibwaechter) but
also state’s premium mare Gina by Gelria
which changed into the breed partnership
Kettelhodt/Müller as a foal as a wedding present. She not only delivered Weltino who became an licensed top auction horse and then
successfully competed at the Grand Prix-level
with rider Ellen Schulten-Baumer but also
state’s premium mare Carmina Burana by
Carbid a Bundeschampion.
Seborga xx, Prince Orac xx, Sugunas xx, Fast
Eddy xx and Likoto xx are the Thoroughbreds
that were used. “Attitude, fighting spirit and
toughness – all attributes that we hope to
get from Thoroughbreds, ” Dr. Hinni LührsBehnke explains. “The offspring are often
more sensitive. If you transmit coolness and
security without applying pressure during the
training, these horses will grow up to become
highly motivated riding partners. Many Thoroughbred sires never had enough mares to
breed to prove themselves. You cannot expect a Thoroughbred to teach s Warmblood
how to trot, however!” The breed is not geared towards marketing foals. “We therefore
we raise the five to six Hanoverians on the
farm every year. We raise them and start
them under saddle as three- or four-year
olds. „Then we sales them privately,“ said
Lührs-Behnke. “It is important that our quality mares remain on the farm. This is how my
grandparents and parents did it and today
we reap the success.” Thoroughbreds are not
exclusively the sires of choice. In 2011 descendants of Lissaro van de Helle, Don Crusador and Lorenzio were born. “I considered
taking on the responsibility of breeding manager for the German Quarter Horse Association a challenge,” the agricultural engineer

explains. “First you consider the differences
to be huge. But you realize quickly that there
are more similarities than you think.” The
breeding goals of horse breeding associations are similar: Everyone strives for a
healthy, well-balanced and rideable riding
horse. For me the horse takes center stage
whatever pedigrees they may be or owner
they may have. First the horse must convince
me then I look at the pedigree.” It is common
practice with the DQHA to evaluate horses
without any knowledge of the pedigrees or
the owners. You receive this information afterwards. “I wish this for our mare shows and
mare performance tests for example,” said
Dr. Lührs-Behnke. “We all have too many prejudices in our heads. The most important part
is the horse and its quality; everything else is
secondary.” n
