Our theme is “Dream Big” as we want to encourage girls to stretch their minds, envision future careers, create businesses, challenge society’s standard of beauty, and find their voice. We would like to encourage our girls to reach for the stars and focus on their gifts, talents and skills that can elevate themselves and humanity. Your commitment to celebrate this momentous occasion is going to be life changing! Our motto is "Empower a Girl, Empower the World!", so we want to highlight girls and women in our communities that embody this message. Whether it is through academics, business, entrepreneurship or community engagement. During International Pretty Brown Girl Day 2015, we have three primary goals that are a part of our club mission; 1. Confidence 2. Courage 3. Character Join us at we create a healthy balance for our girls between fostering leadership and encouraging them to feeling confident in the skin they’re in. We encourage every girl to nurture a generous heart, courage of mind and a boldness of spirit and of course to Dream BIG! Within this guide we will seek to provide you with tips and tools to create an experience that can be remembered and repeated for many years to come. God’s Abundant Blessings, Sheri Crawley Sheri Crawley Founder, Pretty Brown Girl ABOUT PBG Founded in 2010 by the Crawley family, the mission of Pretty Brown Girl was an answered prayer from God, to encourage girls to “celebrate” the beautiful shades of brown all over the world; while inspiring positive self esteem and confidence. Pretty Brown Girl (PBG) encourages families, schools, universities, youth mentoring groups, churches and Sheri and Corey Crawley with daughters Aliya (l) and Laila (r) civic organizations locally and nationally to embrace the differences among their youth. It is important for girls to understand that no matter what their skin tone they are beautiful inside and out. The Pretty Brown Girl collection includes the Pretty Brown Girl Doll “Laila”, PBG T-shirts for girls and women, book bags, totes, and books. To date, there are 150 Pretty Brown Girls Clubs within communities and schools. PBG is the fastest growing girls organization in the country, focused on the wellbeing of girls of color. The belief is that by developing positive self-esteem and confidence while giving the gift of self-love, girls will be inspired to dream their biggest dreams! Established in 2012, by Sheri and Corey Crawley Pretty Brown Girl Day was a vision that God gave the couple, inspired by their two daughters Laila and Aliya Crawley. This is a day that embodies the mission of the Pretty Brown Girl Movement to celebrate the shades of brown all over the world, while inspiring positive self-esteem and confidence. This celebratory event takes place each year on the fourth Saturday of February. This is a day of camaraderie for all pretty brown girls around the world to reflect on our mission and empowering, inspiring and encouraging girls of color to love the skin they’re in. This is our honorary day to honor the beautiful shades of brown all over the world; while inspiring positive self-esteem and confidence. The International Pretty Brown Girl Day celebration is an independently hosted celebration that follows the official guidelines provided by Pretty Brown Girl. Anyone desiring to empower girls through a fun and memorable experience can be a host. Whether you’re a PBG Club Leader, a mom or dad, student, mentor or community leader, International Pretty Brown Girl Day offers you an opportunity to empower girls! How much does it cost? The cost for your independent celebration will vary depending on the experience you want to create. Remember, celebrations don’t have to be expensive to be enjoyable and fun! We suggest that you consider the ages of your guests when deciding the details. Our official guide includes budget-friendly and easy-to-use resources to help make your experience special and worry-free. Who should attend and how many guests should I have? PBGs of all ages can attend, but we recommend girls between the ages of 4-18. There is no required number of guests; you can have a mommy and daughter outing or create an event that includes an entire group of girls. Where should I host my International Pretty Brown Girl Day Celebration? Find a place that will allow you to create a “celebratory” environment and provide ample seating that allows . Suggested locations include your home or a facility in your community (i.e. community center, restaurant, church, school, etc.). International Pretty Brown Girl Day 2015 CELEBRATION CHECKLIST Prepare your guest list and send invitations Use the official invitation included in this guide. Shop for Celebration supplies Make sure that each guest has their PBG T-Shirts. Look for decorations and party favors; you may also want to pick-up some girly accessories for your guests. Decide on your menu The food can include small sandwiches, pastries, cupcakes, cakes, cookies, fruit, etc. Should you have cupcakes, be sure to order our signature PBG cupcake wrappers. Prepare for your crafts and activities Each Official PBG celebration includes crafts and activities. We suggest that you prepare crafts ahead of time. You can also add other fun activities to your Celebration. Choose a team of volunteers to help facilitate your Celebration You should assign helpers before the Celebration, so they will be prepared to assist with each activity during your celebration. Choose a volunteer photographer and videographer You will need both! Choose a great CD for music that is empowering to girls and women. Try to include girl-themed songs! Choose a clean-up committee You will probably be tired, so plan ahead to have help at the end of your day. International Pretty Brown Girl Day 2015 PREPARING FOR YOUR CELEBRATION As Your Guest Arrive... You could provide a variety of Ice Breakers that the guests can participate in when they arrive at the Celebration. The girls will love this! Officially Welcoming Your Guests Provide an overview of PBG and the importance of the “International Pretty Brown Girl Day”. Dream Big (Empowerment Activities) “What Pretty Brown Girl Means” to ME* Have a discussion around what it means to be a Pretty Brown Girl. Go around the room and let each girl provide her own description of what it means to be a Pretty Brown Girl. Dream Big Activity* Take some time to talk about what dreaming big is and how your guests can dream big in everyday life! All Celebrations should include a lesson on leadership. It can be as simple as teaching about professional dress, public speaking, entrepreneurism, career-readiness, etc. You might consider looking for a local Pretty Brown Girl role model in these areas that can come in and speak to the girls or that will allow you to come and take a tour. Remember to incorporate the theme of: Confidence– A feeling of trust in one’s abilities, qualities and judgment Courage– The quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty without fear Character– The way a person thinks, feels, and behaves; The mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual Let’s Celebrate! International Pretty Brown Girl Day 2015 2015 International Pretty Brown Girl Day Sample Agenda Date: Saturday, February 28th, 2015 Time: Your Choice Guests Arrive & Sign In Officially Welcome Guests PBG Ice Breaker Show PBG International Day Video (see website) Dream Big Activities Take the Pledge International Pretty Brown Girl Day 2015 Dream Big Ice Breaker Pretty Brown Girl Dream Big Icebreaker Materials needed: Pink rubber ball Step 1: Gather a group of Pretty Brown Girls into a circle. Step 2: Talk to the girls about what it means to Dream big (You can strive to do and be anything that is in your heart). Step 3: Explain to the girls that when the ball is tossed to them, the following statement should be recited: “I am a Pretty Brown Girl who Dreams Big by _______________________________ (For example, Getting A’s on my math homework because I want to be an Engineer). Dream Big Activity 1 Pretty Brown Girl Dream Jar Building Confidence by Goal Setting Although it can be challenging to Dream Big in today’s society, it is not impossible. It simply means that finding our inner-most dreams requires some concentrated effort. Pretty Brown Girls know that even in the presence of other people’s perceptions about success, they can still Dream Big. What is Confidence? A feeling of trust in one’s abilities, qualities and judgment. By setting your goals How do you build Confidence? You can build confidence in numerous ways such as identifying your talents, thinking positively and always believing in yourself! Building Confidence Activity: The Pretty Brown Girl Dream Jar What is a Dream Jar? Dream jars are a unique and fun idea for Pretty Brown Girls to Dream Big. It is a mason jar filled with different items or notes which identify your hopes and goals for the year. You can put it in a safe, special place where you will always be reminded to continue to dream big. Dream Big Activity 1 Pretty Brown Girl Dream Jar The Official Pretty Brown Girl Dream Jar Activity This is the Official Pretty Brown Girl Dream Jar Activity. The instructions are as follows. Supplies: Mason jar (one for each girl) Pretty Brown Girl Dream Jar Logo Sequins/ decorations Elmers clear glue Scissors, Foam paint brushes, Strips of pink construction paper, Acrylic clear/colored stones Instructions: 1. Print the Pretty Brown Girl Dream Jar Logo. The logo will go on the front of each dream jar being created. 2. Gather a foam paint brush and the clear glue. Cover half of the foam brush with the glue. Carefully, spread the glue inside of the jar. Once you finish, the inside of the jar should be filled with glue. 3. Gather your sequins and any other decorations that were provided. You can add as many sequins and decorations as you would like, but be sure to place it on the glue. 4. After you finish decorating your jar, carefully pick it up. Turn the jar sideways and move it in a circular motion. This will allow any sequins and decorations to fall onto the glue. 5. Carefully, set your dream jar down in front of you. Grab a handful of acrylic stones and gently lay them down in the bottom of the jar. 6. Gather a few strips of pink construction paper. Be sure to grab enough for all the dreams you have and goals you want to achieve. On each strip of paper, write down your hopes, goals, and dreams. Once you are done, fold each strip of paper and place it inside your jar. You can also add small items that help identify your goals. 7. You have just created the official Pretty Brown Girl Dream Jar! Dream Big Activity 2 Pretty Brown Girl “Girl Talk” Be Courageous! What is Courage? The quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty without fear. How can a Pretty Brown Girl have Courage? As a Pretty Brown Girl, you already have courage, but one of the biggest ways you can have courage is by always following what’s in your heart. Courage is not just about being fearless, but it is standing up for what’s right and speaking your mind no matter what people may think, feel, or say. Having Courage Activity: The Pretty Brown Girl “Girl Talk” It’s time to have Girl Talk with other Pretty Brown Girls around you! This discussion will focus on courage. The girls should discuss what they think courage means, how they have courage and its importance.in their lives. Instructions: 1. Gather a group of Pretty Brown Girls into a circle. 2. Each girl should be open and able to share something with the group. 3. Have the girls share an experience or situation that involved something they feared, and how they had courage to overcome that fear. Also, have them share something that they are still afraid of, but would like to have the courage and overcome that fear as well. 4. Encourage the girls to inspire the others. If they have ideas on how to overcome their fears, be sure to let them share with the group. Dream Big Activity 3 Pretty Brown Girl Wax Museum The strong character of your heritage Dream Big Activity 3 Pretty Brown Girl Wax Museum The strong character of your heritage Explain to the girls the following. You are to be a figure in a wax museum. In order to do this, you will choose a Pretty Brown Girl of the past or present whose confidence, courage and character interest you. Research this person, using biographies, encyclopedias, and/or the internet. On Pretty Brown Girl Day, you will “become” this Pretty Brown Girl. You will dress up as this person, use a few appropriate props, and give a 1-2-minute presentation on your leader’s life, speaking as if you were that person. Your presentation must include the following: • The reasons why this Pretty Brown Girl is a leader • A description of leadership traits this Pretty Brown Girl has. How this person displayed confidence, courage, strong character and how they Dream Big! Here is a small listing of various Pretty Brown Girls who Dream Big and have demonstrated confidence, courage and character. Your girls may choose anyone from this list. If they have other suggestions that’s great let them be creative and have fun!
