Australind Skate Park Inc.
The mission of the Australind Skate Park is to serve as a safe, drug-free environment where the local youth are
encouraged to practice their sport, grow as individuals and connect with the community.
Australind has a resident population of 15,000 which is expected to almost double in the next 15 years. It is the
fastest growing area within the Shire of Harvey as many young families are moving into the area to take advantage
of the lifestyle that Australind affords.
Currently the Australind skate park is the only one provided in Australind. It is a relatively basic skate park consisting
of a flat concrete pad with portable skate ramps. Built in 1997 with assistance from the Shire and Harvey, Lotteries
Commission and the community of Australind, it contains a large concrete area, quarter pipe, bank, fun box and
grind rails.
In recent years the Australind community lobbied the local Council
for improved skate park facilities.
This included a petition initiated by two young local skaters that
attracted over 400 signatures.
Endorsement for this necessary upgrade was given by the Shire of
Harvey in 2013.
The proposed upgrade plans were devised by Convic, a global leader in skate park solutions. The plan comprises a
world class venue with a 3 metre bowl, making it the largest and deepest in South West Australia. (Please see
appendix for photos.)
A funding proposal for the $1.1 million upgrade was endorsed by the Harvey Shire Council at its meeting in May
2013. It was endorsed on the condition of government funding from the Department of Sport and Recreation,
Department of Regional Development and Lands, Royalties for Regions and Lotterywest. In addition to the
government funding, a contribution of $50,000 by the Australind community was also required.
Australind Skate Park Inc. was subsequently formed to spearhead the fundraising drive to obtain the community
contribution.
Australind Skate Park Inc. president and committee members are calling on businesses to assist in the achievement
of the required sum of funds to demonstrate the community’s level of support for the project.

Opportunity for Businesses
On average, two skate parks per week have been built in Australia since 2005 indicating growing demand. Between
2003 and 2013 the Australind population has increased by 41%, according to recent statistics.
The proposed Australind Skate Park will cater for all ages, stages and genders. There are two opportunities for local
businesses to assist in the achievement of the $50,000 community contribution.
(1) Corporate Advertising at the new venue
There is a limited opportunity to purchase advertising space at the proposed $1.1 million venue. This space refers to
an advertising board measuring 3mx1m. This opportunity is for a 5 year period at an annual cost of $1,600 equating
to $8,000 for the entire period.
By purchasing advertising at the venue your company creates instant connection from the skate park, to your
business and your new customer.
(2) Corporate capital sponsorship of build of new venue
There is an opportunity to donate a financial sum of money through the official Australian Sports Foundation
fundraising account which has been set up by the Shire of Harvey on behalf of Australind Skate Park Inc.
By making this tax deductible donation to the Australian Sports Foundation account, your business will be seen to be
supporting community development.
Why your Business should avail of this opportunity to
advertise at the Australind Skate Park
In general, Skate Park related sports are the most participated sports at a participation rate of 49% in 2010 and
growing. Soccer has a participation rate of 21%, all water related sports including swimming, surfing, diving has a
participation rate of 17% to 21%.
Department for Sport and Recreations, Strategic Directions 5, 2011-2015 identified that the current affordability that
is preventing many young people from low socio-economic families participating in sport and recreation must be
overcome. Skate parks provide families and individuals with a fun and affordable physical activity.
According to Senior Constable Tony Strang from the South West Crime Prevention Office a Skate park is an affordable
venue for people of all ages to socialize and exercise in a very popular and growing sport.
In addition to being a popular informal and social activity, action sports are also becoming more organised and formal
competitions are becoming more common. This is leading to more demand for facilities that can cater for both
informal use and for organised competitions.

The objectives of the new upgraded Australind Skate Park are:
 Goal #1: To provide the south west with a world class venue that would host state and national and international
skate, scooter and BMX competitions
 Goal #2: To facilitate state and national workshops and jams
 Goal #3: To provide the local community with a venue offering outdoor events such as movies, concert nights
and more
Support for the upgrade
Support for these goals has been received from local dignitaries:

Hon. Adele Farina MLC,

Hon John Castrilli Member for Bunbury

Murray Cowper MLA

Nola Marino MP
Hon. Adele Farina is noted as saying “The added possibility that the new skate park could be used for State, National
and International events would bring tourism and publicity to the area...”
Therefore your business will be supporting a venue that will be unique in the south west. A venue that will attract
visitors from the shire of Harvey, the greater Bunbury area and further afield.
In 2010 it was established that 49% of children aged 5-14 years participate regularly and for extended periods each
week, in skateboarding, BMX, rollerblading or riding scooters. Support for the Australind Skate Park upgrade has
been given by representatives of schools in the Australind area:
Geographe Grammar School
Rob Devenish, Principal
“Skate parks are good to have in the community for young people.”
Australind Senior High School
Tim Platt, Student Services Manager
“The Treendale/Kingston area is growing rapidly and is a good area for a skate park.”

Market Analysis
The official population of the Shire of Harvey as of the 30th June 2013, was 25,924 according to statistics. Since
2003 the residential population has increased by more than 30%.

Located between the two fast growing communities of Treendale and Kingston and in the heart of the recreational
area, the new skate park site is easily accessible and visible from the bustling main artery, Paris Road. Latest traffic
counter data for Paris Road in Australind show that approximately 9,000 vehicles per day utilize the road. With
Kingston and Treendale still rapidly growing, this number will increase significantly over time.
This offers an attractive audience potential for your business should it choose to advertise at the Australind Skate
Park.
According to a study in the Journal of Services Marketing, marketers have noted that advertising at sport venues is
becoming more and more desirable. “In some situations consumers spend extended time, almost as captives, in a
particular setting and, therefore, businesses have been using these extended situations as a means for exposing
these consumers to advertising messages.”
