Our existing providers were the successful low bidders. • The Annual Audit Report was approved and distributed to the membership. • Completed the bi-annual certification that our community qualifies as “housing for older persons” under the Federal Housing Act. • The Reserve Study was accepted and reserve information was distributed to the membership. • The Board wants to insure that we are maintaining sufficient, but not excessive reserves. We have tasked the Finance Committee to review the latest Reserve Study in detail to determine if the replacement cost and useful life used by our consultant accurately reflects our assets. The first phase has been completed and the Board was able to significantly reduce reserve contributions. The second phase of the review is still in progress but should be completed prior to the approval of the Reserve Study for 2016-2017. • Our Lodge and other facilities have been in service for slightly over seven years and we have started approving expenditures of our reserves to keep our facilities in good shape. Twelve expenditures totaling approximately $70,000 were approved during the last twelve months. • Starting with the 2014-2015 budget, the Board has included funding for capital improvements. As part of that funding, the Board approved the proposal for construction on the Emergency Preparedness Advisory Committee storage building and surrounding landscaping, the contract for the library bookshelves, the Active Network event registration program and a third pool table and covers. • Approved a new Procurement Policy to establish guidelines for purchases. • We continue replacing pool and landscape lights with significantly more energy efficient LED lights. • Approved updated Design Review Guidelines after responding to Homeowner’s comments. • Heard six appeals of Design Review Committee decisions, upholding three of the decisions and overturning three including two for artificial turf that the Design Guideline as written required the Committee to deny. • Approved the appointments of 16 people to committees. • Approved formation of the “Solera Veteran’s and Friends Chartered Club,” the “SDV Tennis Anyone? Chartered Club,” and the “Pickle Ball Chartered Club.” • Approved fundraising projects for the Emergency Preparedness Advisory Committee and the Veterans and Friends Chartered Club. • Starting with the Emergency Preparedness Advisory Committee Charter, the Board is revising the committee charters to allow outgoing committee members to participate in the selection process for replacement members. • Through the Association’s landscape maintenance contractor we continued to offer tree trimming services to residents at a reduced rate in the spring and the fall. • Approved personal trainer rule addition to the Association’s Rules and Regulations. The View | December 2015 15 Ninth Annual Veteran’s day Celebration By Suzanne Wade, Resident Once again the community came forward to honor our veterans. The volunteer group did a fantastic job of serving up the luncheon provided through the generosity of the Hemet Valley Mortuary, with Tom Bloom at the grill. The dessert was furnished by Café DJ and included four flavors of cake, cookies and brownie bites. But the focus has always been on thanking our men and women for the service they have done for 16 The View | December 2015 our country, through entertainment, sharing of experiences and the highlight is the giving of the Quilts of Valor by the Quilt Club ‘Quilting Angels’. There were raffle items and happy winners as well. A couple of surprise quilts were awarded and with 18 veterans going home with a new quilt, the day was once again deemed a success in the expression of gratitude. The winners of the Raffle Quilt were Jim and Donna Quibodeaux. They are new SDV residents. Jim is a veteran and served in the Korean War. Also, the Quibodeaux's just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. They were thrilled to be the winners!! So sure enough, when I told native Southern Californians that “The Hat – World Famous Pastrami” was opening in Murrieta, they literally jumped for joy! You see, this iconic eatery started in 1951 with its original restaurant located in Alhambra in the San Gabriel Valley. Over the years restaurants were established in towns like Glendora, Pasadena and Simi Valley. Murrieta is the eleventh location. Don’t bother to dress up to come to The Hat because it is casual all of the way. The Murrieta restaurant is new and spacious with ample booth seating indoors. Outdoor seating is also available. You order and pay at one counter and pick up at another counter when your number is called. Huge bins of condiments, napkins and plastic utensils line the counter as this is truly a “serve yourself operation.” Everything comes wrapped in paper and served in brown paper bags but you can ask for paper plates to facilitate eating at a table. The menu centers on traditional drive-in choices such as burgers, dogs and chili. The leader, of course, is the item that made them famous, the pastrami dip sandwich for $8.99. However, the health conscious can eat here too. One of my lunch partners tried the turkey burger ($4.99) and claimed that it was the best she had ever had! Another ordered a turkey sandwich on rye with lettuce, tomato and avocado ($6.89) and marveled at the freshness of the ingredients. Traditional or light, So Cal native or transplant from another state, our entire party agreed that “The Hat” is a welcome addition to our local dining options. Players from both Solera and Four Seasons converged on our courts for friendly competition. Some family members and friends came to ooh, aah, laugh, and cheer on the participants. A total of 22 players were spread out among men's, women's, and mixed doubles. The entrants played four games before switching partners, and then repeated the process several times. During the tourney, everyone enjoyed meeting others. In addition, all satisfied their palates and stomachs with sandwiches, fruits, and drinks. The time needed to complete all three categories, 7:30 am to 1:30 pm, is evidence of the close and highly competitive nature of many of the matches. That having been said, all participants were winners as each walked away with a special tennis weather ball plaque, compliments of our own Mayrene Bickmore. All had a good time. Winners of the three categories are as follows: Women's doubles . . .Judy Bailey - Mary Ellen Brogdon Runners-up . . . . . . .Cheryl Robinson - Terry Potts Men's doubles . . . . .Dennis Ulhken - Job Victoria Runners-up . . . . . . .Chuck Williams - Chuck Sims Mixed doubles . . . . .Mark DeSautel - Carol Ferber \ Jerry Giambeluca - Mary Ellen Brogdon MEN’S GOLF GROUP The Mens Golf Group completed a 2 day Club championship round at Soboba Country Club on Nov 12. Just finished the Craft Fair, the Veteran’s Day Celebration where our Quilts of Valor were awarded and now we have the holidays ahead of us. Oh, and then we flip the calendar to a whole new year and there’s the Valley Quilter’s Guild Quilt Show. Some of our local Quilters will be entering their quilts, so plan on coming out in February 12th and 13th for the show.
