A View From the Bridge
Volume 30 BLAST 3 www.marinyachtclub.com March 2013 A View From the Bridge The 2013 Homeport Cruise will be behind us when you get this. Assuming things went according to plans (don’t they always?) we should have some nice memories of a great weekend filled with fun, fellowship, good food, and unseasonably great weather. Let’s see how prophetic I can be. Possibly requiring a little more effort but certainly very effective is to get placed on the agenda for a Board Meeting and address the Board directly. The meetings are announced in a variety of ways but typically will be convened on the fourth Monday at 5pm. If you have never attended a meeting, I would encourage it whether you have any issues or not. It will give you tremendous insight into the workings of the club and the things we are dealing with. You will absolutely be welcome. On the subject of being prophetic though or being able to look into the minds of the membership…I have to admit that in many cases it is not only a struggle for me but also for our Board of Directors. There are only certain things we can know or even make a good guess at. There may be other issues that are brewing that have the potential for blindsiding us. To that end, we are in the process of creating a couple of ways to gather your inputs. One of these is a survey of the membership in an attempt to identify new issues as well as get a good handle on those that we really don’t know if they are big deals for us or not. Be looking for that in the next month or two and please participate. Now…please take some time to read the various contributions in this edition of the Bugle. Many people have taken the time to write articles in a number of areas that you should have an interest in. Also, this is our official communication with the membership. Who knows? Maybe you might even see your name and/or picture. More importantly, if you would like to contribute something yourself that you think would capture the general interest of the membership, please get in touch with our Editor-in Chief Holly Olsen, and she will get you all set up. If you really have an issue with something though, I hope you know you don’t have to wait for a survey or some other questionnaire to express yourself. The quick and easy way to get our attention regarding an issue is talk to me or anyone else on YOUR Board of Directors. The conversation can be confidential and/or anonymous if you wish but it won’t be ignored. You don’t even have to have a real conversation (i.e. face to face or on the phone)…you can simply write a letter or email. Looking forward to a great summer and boating season… Mike Sale, Commodore Starting next month on Sunday March 10th we are starting a “Buddies Table” for the young crowd ages 4 and up from 5-6 pm featuring kid friendly family style food and coloring contest. Come on down and take advantage of the chance to socialize with other parents, grandparents and members while the kids have fun together at their own table making new friends. We hope to have one every month. So if you can’t make it on the 10th watch the calendar for April’s date. ON the HOUSE All hands on deck! Work Weekend is coming up on April 13th & 14th and your help is needed. We have lots of projects to tackle this year. As always it’s time to spruce up the landscaping. While at the club, note the new exit signs & emergency lighting. Paul Descalso is responsible for installing them; we can’t thank him enough for all the work he does! Also working in the background is SC Don Lesley who has prepared specs for replacing the upstairs deck and is getting bids with help from Jack Barr. Bill Minahen has been busy at work too in the galley. But in addition, the following projects are on our list: 1.) updating the upstairs bar including a new hand-washing sink The House Committee is in the process of specifying new paint colors, lighting and window covering for the dining room and hopes to have it finalized by next month. 2.) new countertops & shelving and flooring 3.) the Boyd patio windbreak needs repair Kathleen Barr, Vice Commodore 4.) closets need a spring cleaning 5.) the galley needs a bit of touch up It’s a large list, but we are hoping that a lot can get done that weekend. So please sign up! Let us know what you would like to work on. We have project managers for each of the areas, and they will be happy to have you aboard. Make it a family day; we will have lots of things that our younger members can help with. March Highlights Fri. Mar. 15: St. Patrick’s Day Party Wed. Mar. 20: Mariners Luncheon Lunch on Saturday of pizza and salad will be hosted by Papa Murphy’s Pizza. If you can’t participate that weekend but want to contribute time, let me know. Many of the projects will be ongoing. Fri. Mar. 22: Cruise to Emery Cove Mon. Mar. 25: Board Meeting at 5 PM Also starting in March, your dining bill will include a comment card. Please take the time to fill it out and let us know how we are doing - good and bad. Your input is important to us! 2 2.) Replace the batteries in your smoke detectors. You can also buy combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors at most hardware or home improvement stores; make sure these meet UL standard 217 and 2034. Check the manufacture date as they lose sensitivity over time. Batteries used for replacement should be relatively new. Cruise News & Safety Tips This past weekend, the 1st through 3rd, was our annual Homeport Cruise. We hope all enjoyed Friday's and Saturday's festivities at our Club, culminated by the 27th annual Mariners' Service at St. Luke's Presbyterian Church. 3.) Vehicle Safety: Walk around your car, checking for leaks (liquids on the ground), tires appearance (full, flat, tread wear, etc.), anything broken (glass, etc.) Check to see your lights work, including head and tail lights, turn indicators, and low and high beams. Do you have an emergency kit, including first aid kit, jack and lug wrench, flashlight (that works), your vehicle registration and insurance certificates, and cell phone and emergency numbers to call. Our 2013 cruising schedule has had a few hiccups: Our February Cruise to the San Francisco Yacht Club was cancelled; Martinez, scheduled for September, has been postponed until 2014; and, the dates for Pittsburg have been changed to October 18 - 20, so to not conflict with the Quad (four Club) Cruise and our Spaghetti Feed. Please make adjustments to your calendars. 4.) Water (a gallon per day per person); food (at least 3 days worth of nonperishable); battery powered radio (new batteries); flashlights (new batteries); first aid kit; manual can opener, tools (wrenches, pliers, etc. to turn off utilities); Towelettes, garbage bags, twist ties, etc. for personal sanitation; and a charged cell phone and maybe a solar charger or inverter. Remember to join Bill and Holly Olsen March 22 - 24 at the "Pupas and Puka Cruise” to the Emery Cove Yacht Harbor. Please read about this cruise in WUOTD and see the flyer in this issue. And, sign up. You'll have fun! And, the Hinkles have a great Cruise in the works for Benecia on April 19 - 21. See the Flyer and WUOTD. Now, another few things that come to mind: Safety is something we don't think about until something bad happens. None of us leaves our homes thinking about the potential bad things that could happen. 5.) And, create and familiarize yourself and family with an emergency plan. Your local Red Cross has printed materials on making your plan. So, here's a check list that could help: 1.) Service or replace your fire extinguishers (hopefully you've done this at the Homeport Cruise). Most home and boat owners should have combination fire extinguishers those suitable for putting out wood, paper, flammable liquid, or electrical fires. Hopefully, you'll never have the need and nothing bad will happen. But, we should all be aware and be prepared. Bruce Fairey, Rear Commodore 3 It is absolutely unacceptable to pump your holding tank out into the bay. There is no excuse whatsoever for not using one of the multitude of pump out stations strategically located at most marinas in our region. We even have one in our own harbor. If you need help moving your boat to the pump out station, feel free to ask Dave or myself. Port Captain’s Report I'd like to set a crystal clear expectation: If you intentionally pump your holding tank into our harbor, you will be asked by yours truly to remove your boat from the harbor for a period of 30 days. No exceptions. There are only 33 days and a wake up until the start of the 2013 Salmon Season folks. Start sharpening your hooks now! Now... on to far more pleasant topics. The subcommittees working on small boat handling, dredging and C Dock repairs continue to make excellent progress towards their respective goals. I expect to be able to present our preliminary findings on the small boat handling initiative at the APR board meeting. The board meetings continue to be well attended by engaged members. I've noticed over the years that this club has a very active rumor mill. Unfortunately, most of the rumors I hear on the docks are false, incomplete or inaccurate. A great way to obtain reliable information about what's happening at the club is to attend a board meeting or any of the various Committee meetings. Read The Bugle, too! The club will be upgrading several common area hose reels to the new commercial standard in the coming weeks. You can read about them at http:// www.rapidreel.com. An example can be seen on C Dock at Seafarer's slip. Members who wish to upgrade the hose reels at their own slips may do so by paying directly for the upgrade (as was the case on C Dock.) The total cost of each system (installed) will be in the neighborhood of $300, including 150' of 5/8" commercial-grade hose. We already have several members signed up for the program. If you're interested in upgrading your hose reel and hose, please send an email to: [email protected]. Once the final costs are determined, I'll confirm your interest before implementing the upgrade. Split the cost with a neighbor! This past weekend was the Homeport Cruise. It was fun to see so many people enjoying themselves at the club. I was only able to attend dinner on Friday night, but I really enjoyed the seafood meal that Cheryl and her crew put out. Great job! The process of changing the main gate over to "both sides open" mode is complete. We can now open either (or both) sides of the gate programmatically. This will facilitate the smooth flow of traffic in both directions during events. Next project: Harbor WiFi! We recently had an incident in the harbor that bothered me quite a lot. It occurred on the evening of Friday, 01MAR13... right at the start of the Homeport Cruise weekend. Somebody apparently pumped out his holding tank directly into the harbor. The evidence was strongest on A Dock. The odor was so offensive that some members elected to go home after dinner instead of staying on their boats. Dave Watson was investigating the situation at 2230, long after he should have been enjoying a relaxing evening with his family. Respectfully, Gary M. Root, Port Captain 4 Membership Committee Report There may be other events as well. The Marin Yacht Club has many positive features, and we will be showing them off. And don't hesitate to share your ideas and friends with the MYC. Working together, we can bring our membership rolls back up to historic heights. While the club started out the year with two new Regular memberships, the gain has been offset recently with a number of resignations. The reasons vary from moving to a new area to lifestyle decisions. I'm told that the first quarter is historically a time when we might expect a few resignations, so we're not alarmed, and we're enthused about our new and prospective members. Bob Repke, Membership Chair March BIRTHDAYS Our membership is as follows through February 28th: Boating Related Social 169 20 Total Memberships Joseph Alderson 189 The Membership Committee is putting a few of our ideas to increase membership into action. In the coming months, you can look forward to: Stephen Astle Hugh Chatham Paul Descalso Seeing a stronger emphasis on our great harbor facilities. Sylvia Edwards Frank Ruderman Even Forsberg Lisa Salvas Chris Halberstadt Richard Schmidt Jacqueline Lamb Monroe Wingate A summer picnic for present and potential members Ann Laurence Robert Woodward A "reunion" open house for less active members Donald Lesley Mentoring new members to insure they get to know the club well Letters to new Marin County homeowners, inviting them to get to know our club Claire McBride A family event to highlight our tennis and sailing programs Laura Motzer Joanne Murray Increased interaction with the youth sailing summer camps 5 Fuel Committee Entertainment Update The first Fuel Day of 2013 went smoothly on Saturday, February 23. Fourteen member boats got diesel or gasoline at our great member-only non-profit prices. Diesel was $4.10 per gallon and mid-grade gasoline was $4.37 per gallon. Check the MYC website under "Fuel" for the monthly survey of prices at local fuel docks (Surveys thanks to Lee Cordner). The next Fuel Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 13. Because of low tides that morning, we will start fueling at 11:00. Please remember, no topping off (takes too much time and there is a risk of spills), and 100 gallon minimum purchase for diesel and 50 gallon minimum for gasoline. To sign up contact Harold Kleiderman at [email protected]. Harold Kleiderman, Fuel Chair February kicked off with the Super Bowl Party and Chili Cook Off. Although our 49ers didn’t win, we enjoyed the game, great chili, cornbread and wonderful appetizers provided by our members. We had 8 chili entries in the cook off. Much to my surprise I won first place with my primal bison chili. VC Kathleen Barr took second place. The primal bison chili is from the Primal Blue Print Cookbook, by Mark Sisson. If anyone would like the recipe, let me know. It is delicious and healthy! By the time you read this, our annual Table Decorating Luncheon will have taken place. Lee Essayan and Mary Beth Wheeler did a great job of coordinating. We had 8 beautifully decorated tables! A large group of women enjoyed the choice of two wonderful salads and fabulous desserts. A big thanks to our volunteer bartenders too. Look for a full article and photos in the next month’s Bugle. Our next event is St. Patrick’s Day dinner on March 15. Make certain to make your reservations early for this wonderful Irish dinner with an Irish dancing school performance. Thanks to Charlie and Claire McBride for continuing this annual tradition at MYC. Eight Bells Floyd White, Staff Commodore (1994), member since 1989 One new event has been added to the May calendar thanks to Katie Taggart. Katie has arranged a tour of Guide Dogs California campus in San Rafael on May 14. After the tour, we’ll lunch at La Toscana’s. Sign up early for this fun event. We promise you’ll see some great dogs and adorable puppies! Roger Garhardt, member since 1991 See you at the Club! Donna Purvis, Entertainment Chair 6 Yacht Club History When the sun went down and the evening breeze came down the creek, one soon learned that the dress code called for a heavy jacket. Lighting was provided by a few 100 watt light bulbs. The only furniture was wooden picnic tables. There are still two of the old tables on the lawn. Try to imagine climbing over the bench, paper plate with food in one hand, plastic cup, filled with strong drink in the other and all of this in semi-darkness. The Cabana didn’t offer fine dining, but it served a very important purpose. THE CABANA Nineteen sixty-nine was a busy, exciting year. Beale Island was raised well above the highest tides by the dredging spoils from the new harbor. There were restrooms, showers and storage lockers at the “A” Dock head. The perimeter of the Island was ringed with newly planted trees. One could drive from Summit Ave. across the causeway to a huge parking lot and then walk down to wide, stable concrete floats. Oh, the wonder of it all! The first was the rekindling of the team spirit. The whole Club pulled together to build something. The monthly newsletter, “The Scuttle Butt” continued to extol the membership to show up for the next work day. Some members contributed cash or materials, others worked weekends, and some did both. Robert Severin’s cabana fell short of being the Club house we needed, but it had a concrete slab and footings that supported walls and posts with trussed roof beams to hold up those areas that were covered. All of these parts would be useful in the future. Members quickly moved their boats to their new berths. The Club House was towed up river. Other structures were torn down leaving only the foundations. Our home for forty years was abandoned and there were other changes. Social life became centered on individual boats. Gone were the gala costume parties and the pot luck dinners. The Board of Directors held their meetings either at another Yacht Club or at a local restaurant. The annual meetings were held at the Peacock Gap Country Club. There was something missing. Beginning in March, a floor plan of the original Cabana will be displayed in the dining room. Don Lesley, Staff Commodore History Chair There was a void that needed filling, and The Board engaged a local architect, who was also a member, to design a building. Robert Severin designed a "summer place.” It was a lovely place on sunny days with shade and open areas for sunlight to reach the trees and plants. The handsome brick barbecue was the center piece for parties and the only warm place in the building. 7 As the tennis season begins, we are looking for new recruits that are interested in playing social tennis. If you are a ‘closet’ tennis player or played once way back in college (you know, when racquets were still made of wood)…it’s time to dust off your racquet (or maybe buy a new one), put on your non-black soled shoes, and join us for some tennis! The Pirates Locker The Pirates Locker (formerly Jade’s Corner) will bring you news and adventures from the tennis committee and tennis team. Our first bit of news is that we now have a full tennis committee along with a new Chair Paul Clark and Vice-Chair Mike Chaddick. Secondly, the Committee wants everyone to understand what our purpose is: TENNIS COMMITTEE PURPOSES To facilitate the enjoyment of MYC tennis clubhouse, courts and pool by the broadest possible spectrum of MYC members To foster opportunities for members to play “social” tennis and take full advantage of MYC courts in conjunction with tennis team matches, tournaments, lessons, youth programs and related activities Pirates tennis team: (standing) Paul Clark, Caddie Grenier, Bill Minahen (mascot), Kim Minahen, Maggie Collins, Chuck Hoffmann, Jade Nguyen (Tennis Pro), Jeff Forgan, (on the court): Ellen Clark, Kim Richard, Katie Clark (the pooch and best ball retriever ever). If you are interested in playing with the Pirates please contact me at [email protected]. To provide input to BOD and General Manager regarding Tennis Facility management (budgeting, maintenance, improvements, food services, personnel, income generation and Tennis and Pool Rules) To assist Membership Committee in marketing Tennis Facility to new member candidates To collaborate with Entertainment Committee for use of Tennis Facility for member events To contribute regular articles to MYC Bugle regarding MYC Pirates tennis team and all activities related to the Tennis Facility. With the warm weather comes an increase in activity at the tennis facility. In order to maintain what’s left of the court surfaces, we have added gentle reminders to all the court entry points. I could explain, but a picture IS worth a thousand words. Committee meetings will be held monthly. Look for details about our meetings soon. Everyone is welcome! See you on the courts! “Cap’n” Kim Richard 8 The Ship’s Store Getting Ready for Spring Thank you for the presence of our burgee at the Club during the Homeport Cruise event. Commodore Mike Sale has asked that we have more of a presence in that direction at our club. He wishes that we would display our burgee more around our Club such as wearing our pocket emblems on club blazers. It is so good to see how that is coming into fruition. I thank you for helping to make this happen. The MYC Ship’s Store is truly there to benefit our members and our guests, and it is set up for everyone’s utilization. On Friday night dinners, Jesse, our delightful bartender, opens the glass doors to the Ship’s Store case which is located upstairs in the BAR so that you may check out what items we have in stock. Ben also would be happy to help you open the case anytime. We do now have the same vendors, but at better prices, so our pricing is much more reasonable. If you would ever see anything that you would like to order from the catalog, please let Ben or me know, and we will do so for you. You can email me at [email protected] or call 415-456-4265. It is such a pleasure to work with you, and if I can be helpful in any way, please let me know. Thank you so much for your participation. I have been working with our vendors to get better pricing than we have had in the past. This should contribute to providing you with whatever your needs are in furnishing your nautical items –for wearing on the boat or at the club. Ahoy matey, Dana Schaberg, Ship’s Store Chair This month The Ship’s Store is featuring the cotton/ poly flatback rib knit pullover and jacket. These items come in many colors and sizes from XS to 4 XL so take a look, and let me know if you would like to place an order. 9 Staff Commodores 21st Annual Crab Feed Fifty-One members, plus four of our staff labored over a three day period to feed 242 attendees at this year’s three-hour crab-feed. Our newer members might be interested to know that this is an annual event which serves as a fundraiser, under the auspices of the Club’s past commodores and their spouses. The net proceeds eventually fund unanticipated improvements to the Club, that, while very important, aren’t included in the Club’s general operating budget. Recent examples of these improvements include funding for the purchase of the sound system in the dining room, the widescreen television in the upstairs bar, window blinds in the upstairs bar, and most recently, the metal picnic tables next to the “Staff Commodore Jim Williams” BBQ area. Annual contributions are made to fund the maintenance of our “Memory Rose Garden,” some of the sail fleet regattas, and the junior sailing program, as a result of this Staff Commodore’s fundraiser. MYC Staff Commodores S/C Don and JoAnne Lesley deserve special mention for not only chairing the event for seven-years in the past, but for always being there from Thursday’s “setup” to Sunday’s “tear-down” and clean-up. Our Crab Feed veterans, Jim Prince and Bob Romer, while missing, were “in recovery” but didn’t miss a beat in helping, albeit in absentia. Jim and Judy Prince’s good friend from Florida, Jim Kragh, stepped in helping with the bread preparation on the morning shift, and as Captain of the Crab Deck, assured that all were served timely and with healthy portions of what I consider to be the best crab served to date. Our Port Captain, Gary Root, recognizing the need for help, pitched in at the last minute and helped throughout the evening. Frank Hall was also ever-present every step of the way. It should be noted that Frank and Carol Hall chaired this event for its first ten years and were closely involved with many facets of this event, including ordering the patio tent, chairs and tables and bar ticket sales. Even though Carol, who is also recovering, could not attend, the Hall family was well represented with many family members. Frank worked tirelessly selling drink chits and managing the cash flow. JoAnne Lesley, Bonnie Diefendorf, Noel Diefendorf, and Mary Beth Wheeler 10 Crab Feed continued Another special thanks to Lee Essayan for arranging the seating. It is a very complicated process due to last minute cancellations and add-ons, virtually up to the minute before the event starts. Julie Myers assisted in greeting everyone arriving and making them feel welcome. I would like to especially recognize Kay for her many hours of work and devotion to the event. Planning for this event typically starts in early November and ending with such things as the “thankyous” and the accounting reconciliation being completed in early March. There are an unbelievable number of “moving parts” that go into this event. Keeping track of them is no small feat, and they are unrecognizable to the untrained eye, unless of course, something goes wrong. Every aspect of the event ran well thanks to Kay, whose ease and grace made the event look simpler than it is. Lee and Julie Thanks to Susan Zurell, Allison Simpson, and Kay! I also would also like to thank the “cast of thousands” who helped with the event. Dana Schaberg set up the raffle display with signage provided by Susan Zurell who also ran the raffle drawing with great zeal. I offer a special thanks to the announcing talents of Allison Simpson who chose to forego a friend’s birthday party to help us with the evening. Vice Commodore Kathleen Barr 11 Crab Feed continued Thanks to the following for contributing raffle prizes: Roger Lauer: Case of Calistoga Cellars Wine San Rafael Joe’s: Two $50.00 Gift Certificates Il Davide: Two $50.00 Gift Certificates West Wind Yacht Management: $100.00 Gift Certificate West Coast Canvas: Gift Certificate (custom fender covers, $160.00 value) Lee Essayan: “Snap-On” miniature tool box and tools, a (large) bottle of Johnny Walker, carry on travel bags Jack Barr: Hand crafted Wood Box Dana Schaberg: Gift Basket and mug set Past Commodores: Samsung 19” TV and Kindle Fire Selling the raffle tickets were Betsey Baxter, Bonnie Diefendorf, Eunice Howard, Linda Doving, Amy Wooler, Sally Simpson, Joan Kurtz, and team leader Lori Lowrance. Members “picking up” and soliciting donated raffle items including myself and Kay were Rich Schmidt, Bill and Holly Olsen, Roger Lauer, Lee Essayan, Dana Schaberg, Lee Cordner, and Amy Reece. Thanksagain for a terrific job! Also, please make an effort to support the merchants and vendors that are listed above who have generously donated items to the Marin Yacht Club, not only this year, but for many years in the past. The tent and table set-up on Friday involved many members with a lot of elbow grease, and I thank the following: Team leader Don Lesley, Frank Hall, Lee Cordner, Amy Reece, Scott Baxter, Noel Diefendorf, Wib Tapscott, Ron Witzel, JoAnne Lesley, Sheila Whittemore, Sandie Yoffie, Kay Simmons, Joe and Angela Long, Lee Essayan and Kathleen Barr. Saturday morning came quickly, and the kitchen crew appeared - Paul and Kay Simmons, Jim Kragh, JoAnne Lesley, Noel and Bonnie Diefendorf, Karen Burnworth, followed by the afternoon galley and crab crews - JoAnne Lesley, Paul and Kay Simmons, Bonnie Diefendorf, Bob and Mary Beth Wheeler, Bob Schaberg, Lee Cordner and Amy Reece. Serving libations were Noel Diefendorf (team leader), S/C Lee Cordner, Richard Kurtz, John Likas, Rick Peterson, Dennis Amundson, Joe Long, Bill Minahen, Scott Sullivan, Michelle Essayan, Commodore Mike Sale and Vice Commodore Kathleen Barr. Greeting you at the door, and in charge of the seating were Lee Essayan and Julie Myers, selling refreshment tickets were Frank Hall and Bill Olsen. Connie Williams deserves a thank-you for providing the lemons that graced the table for the crab feed, and I would like to offer a special thanks to Rear Commodore Bruce Fairey and Justine for being the “lemon fetchers and to Holly Olsen for being the “chicken fetcher.” Staff Commodores who participated and/or assisted in setting up the Crab Feed were Joe Alderson (1979), Val Clayton (1984), Don Lesley (1985), Frank Hall (1992), Wilbur ”Wib” Tapscott (1993), Jack Sorensen (1996), Paul Simmons (2001 and 2007), Ron Witzel (2004), Ric Laurence (2005), Bill Olsen (2008), Bob Schaberg (2010), Noel Diefendorf (2011) and Lee Cordner (2012). Of course, the following day is “clean-up” and “teardown” - what a mess! Helping restore the Club to order and cleanliness were: Team Leader Don Lesley, Scott Baxter, Frank Hall, Paul and Kay Simmons, Lee Cordner, Amy Reece, Noel and Bonnie Diefendorf, Wib Tapscott, Val Clayton, Ric Laurence and Mike Sale. Rick Peterson and our harbormaster Dave Watson. 12 Crab Feed continued Thanks to Ben Yamanaka and staff for putting out the wine, cleaning up, and staying “at the ready.” Special thanks to Ben for ordering food and supply items and for supporting all of our efforts. While there was a “cast of thousands,” the event would not have been successful without your attendance. Kay and I thank-you for coming and sincerely hope that you had a great time! Next year’s Crab-Feed will be held on Saturday, February 8. Please note that we will likely be placing a maximum limit on number of guests next year due to the newly imposed fire code. Our capacity will simply be less next year and will require some modifications on attendance. Please mark your calendar for next year; same time, same place, different crab. Paul and Kay Simmons Crab-Feed Chairpersons 13 Silver Seas Yachts brought over two yachts for Homeport Cruise, 2013: Hurrah! us to tour; they also served up some mighty fine mimosas and hors d'oeuvres. There was a swap meet / flea market. We had stuff to swap or sell, but no takers. I'm not sure if trades or swaps were made, but there were some pretty nice items to be had. Some folks played dominoes in the Bar (I don't, as folks know by being I'm using toes to count). Commodore Mike Sale and Carolyn say “Welcome to the Homeport Cruise – the cruise to nowhere! “ barefoot that The day was perfect for Bocce Ball; again, no- body wants me as a partner (truly awful!). Forget the channel markers; use the top of my head, as despite the overcast, it's beacon red. This year's Homeport started off with a very "lazy" cruise in. It was so lazy and quiet, barely an engine could be heard (for that matter, most engines were quiet for the weekend). Though, we did hear some corks popping. At 1600 hours, we enjoyed terrific camaraderie at our tennis facility. Great friends, plenty of wine, cheese and crackers, good banter and ideas, and the superb view over our harbor to Mt. Tam. Fun. Official functions kicked off on Friday (3/1) at 1730 hours with cocktails at our Bar. It was festive to see all in various "MYC" attire; some old and some brand spankin' new. Staff Commodore Diefendorf included his Italian "red right returning" vest (and, he makes Uncle Guido so proud!). After just the right period of "attitude adjustment," almost 60 celebrants headed downstairs and enjoyed a wonderful Italian night dinner. After, there were a few dice games, but all seemed "winners." At 1730 hours, our evening festivities began in the Bar (duh!). It was a throw back to the late 50's. There were black on black attires, bow ties untied, and even a narrow pink tie (thanks Marty, Noel, and Bob). Cheryl's hors d’oeuvres (oysters, sliced purple and gold potatoes with beluga, and spanakopita.) Then, downstairs to the ol' Cal-Neva Club: Beautiful decorations (the Club looked sultry and beautiful; thanks, Donna), a wonderful meal (thanks, Cheryl), and ol' Blue Eyes music, thanks to Brad Bann. Great food, wonderful music, and chocolates and Port at the tables after a bit of dancing. How terrific! On Saturday, most were up early, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. There were many activities to choose from that began at 1000 hours. These included: The U.S.C.G. Auxiliary (Beni Agoustari) was there to do courtesy vessel safety checks; it was a great way to learn more about our boats and a step toward making sure we're even more safe on the water. We concluded the weekend festivities with the 27th annual Mariners' Service at St. Luke's. As I was a bit under the weather (I wish I could blame it on scotch or wine), Staff Commodore Purvis attended and proudly carried MYC's burgee. After, most trundled down the hill to the Loch Lomond Yacht Club to enjoy some spirits, banter, and a wonderful brunch. Chief Fire Protection (Jeremy Bowen) was there, providing us with a demonstration of portable fire extinguisher use; then they serviced existing extinguishers and sold new ones to all wanting. 14 Scenes from the Homeport Cruise Weekend Let's wash the boat and how 'bout a nap? A great Homeport! For those who came, thank you! For those who couldn't come, next year! And, remember: It's your Club - use and enjoy it. Trust me, you'll have fun.
