We’re part of the TRI-State
The Dearborn County Economic Development Initiative (DCEDI),
in cooperation with the Dearborn County Convention & Visitor’s
Bureau, and the Dearborn County Chamber has ramped up efforts to
market our county in the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Area.
If the University of Cincinnati football program knows anything, it
knows how to recharge its batteries. After losing their third head
coach (Mark Dantonio, Brian Kelly and Butch Jones) in the last six
years, they hired Tommy Tuberville. Coach Tuberville has local ties,
with his wife being from Guilford, IN, and he is looking to add stability to the football program as well as re-energizing the fan base. That’s
why he is our guest speaker at this year’s Get Energized luncheon.
“It is called the Tri-State area and we want people to know that we
are part of it,” Said DCEDI Executive Director Michael Rozow, Jr.
“Marketing ourselves on 700WLW with Jim Scott definitely gets the
exposure we are looking for.”
Jim Scott, 700WLW, has been running commercials on air since the
start of the new year. Jim is a Dearborn County resident and is passionate about our community. This is a year long campaign and the
content of the commercials will change periodically to keep fresh and
new.

Firewater Grill, Willie’s Sports Café, Top Shelf Sports Bar, and
wrapping up at Boogie Nights at Hollywood Casino. We’re
pretty sure everybody had a blast judging from the photographic evidence.

Collaborative Effort
Having a redevelopment person is a huge benefit to any community. When they work well with other entities and municipalities, the sky is the limit. That is what we have here in Dearborn County. Al Abdon, City of Greendale, Grant Hughes,
City of Lawrenceburg and Jeff Stratman, City of Aurora, have
been working tirelessly since taking their positions. They have
been collaborating on many of the counties needs to have us
ready when called upon by potential businesses.

Recently, they all attended the Ball State, Building Better Communities 2013 Indiana Economic Development Course. Also
in attendance was Kelli Boiman from the Dearborn County
Economic Development Initiative. This course taught them
new techniques and gave them new ideas for luring businesses
into Dearborn County. It also gave them a chance to get to
know each other outside the office. The time spent will be
invaluable to the future success of Dearborn County.
Economic development efforts in Dearborn County took a
another giant step forward last month when the Dearborn
County Economic Development Initiative (DCEDI) purchased
42± acres of land in the West
Harrison TIF (Tax Increment
Financing) District. The land,
known as the Stone farm, is on
the north side of U.S. 52 and
close to Interstate 74. 26± acres
was deeded to the Dearborn
County Redevelopment Commission and the remaining 15
acres is still with the DCEDI.
With the 40 acres purchased
in 2010, there is now over 80
acres to use to lure business to
Dearborn County.

VISION: Dearborn County ... where the business community
works collaboratively with others to make the community the
“perfect place” to live, play, work and do business.
The important element in this story is all the people and resources it took to get this deal finalized. The Dearborn County
Council, Dearborn County Commissioners, Dearborn County
Economic Development Initiative, Dearborn County Redevelopment Commission and the City of Lawrenceburg all played
crucial roles in this land acquisition.
PURPOSE: The Dearborn County Chamber of Commerce is
a business-to-business networking partnership, consisting of
individuals (interested citizens), businesses, government and
community organizations. Membership provides the opportunity for businesses and people to share products, services,
ideas and experiences that guide our community to a better
quality of life for all.
The land in question is “shovel ready,” and those are two critical words in the economic development world. Once a company that is looking to locate or relocate a business or operation
makes a decision to move forward, the company wants to make
the move as quickly as possible. The fewer the infrastructure
and governmental challenges, the more desirable the property
becomes.
MISSION: The Dearborn County Chamber’s mission is to
promote, inform, educate and assist members to improve and
grow their business success, thus making our community a
vital part of the local, state and regional economy.
The Redevelopment Commission will consider other land
purchases in the future, but for now this step allows us to put
“product on the shelf.” Lack of product has been the biggest
challenge for the Dearborn County Economic Development
Initiative in attracting new investment to the area. This begins
to change that, and we’ll step up our marketing efforts to get
out the word. We’ll also continue to work with property owners who are interested in selling their land at a competitive
price directly to relocating businesses.
GOAL: To enhance the economic vitality and quality of life in
Dearborn County through economic development, advocacy
and services that help businesses prosper and grow.

Much of the Chamber’s work is planned and carried out by
volunteers who serve on Chamber committees and task forces.

Can You Afford Not To?
Blayr Barnard – So many times, I hear my clients say, “I need
a secretary (or line worker or sales person, etc.) so badly, but I
just can’t afford them.” My reaction is usually to tell them that
we should go through their financials and see if they have the
financial ability to hire. Recently though, I have run into many
owners that my reaction is, “Can you afford not to?”
I highly suggest looking at all of your options, decided whether you can afford an additional staff member and determining
if one is necessary, but in some cases, that hire could be key to
your business.

For example: I had a client that was looking at using Sales
Reps. The owner did not want to pay the “exorbitant” amount
of commission she had been quoted from various potential
channels. She felt it would cut into her profit too significantly
and would erode her firm base of customers. When I delved
deeper into the company information, I found that they were
currently breaking even at 60% of purchase price, but that volume was far too low to make any significant gains on market
share. At that point, my response to the client was a resounding, “Can you afford not to?”

If you are in this situation, take a moment to do a quick analysis of the positions you are considering. Here are a few tips I
would consider:

If it is a commission position:
o What is your breakeven point?
o What is the commission position percentage
based on?
o Consider a 3 month trial phase before making a
final decision.
•
If it is an administrative position:
o Do a one week time study. Keep track of tasks
you do all week long and how much time it takes
you.
o Then divide these tasks up into the categories you
would like to hire someone to complete.
o See how many hours this would take and estimate a wage amount to see if you can afford the
position.
o If so, consider hiring someone on a temporary
basis or through a talent agency.
In this situation, the client needed to increase their sales
significantly in order to get any real market share and turn a
profit for the company. Since they were breaking even at 60%
of the price of the product, that still left 10% for the owner and
30% for commissions. Yes, this is a bit simplified so that I can
explain it easily, but in essence, this was the situation.
This is not the only case I have run into where hiring right
now instead of waiting made sense. In another client situation I ran into, it was an office manager position that was
being weighed. Many businesses can run effectively with lower
administrative support, but in this case, the situation needed
addressing… and quickly. I asked the client to tell me about
his sales process and found that he was both answering the
calls, bidding the jobs and trying to manage the back office
staff. When I heard him answer a call with exasperation from
stress and leave someone on hold for 6 minutes, my response
was a resounding, “Can you afford not to?”
While I am an advocate of strategic thinking and strategic
hiring, in these two cases the owner was almost the enemy of
growth for the business. In one, the company was only going
to grow as far as one person could handle. In the other situation, the customer service was suffering because the owner
was taking on too much work.

Sometimes it makes sense to hire an additional staff member
instead of waiting for all of the financial pieces to fall into
place. Don’t grow haphazardly, think strategically, but always
ask the question, “Can I afford not to?”

In their February 2013 issue, Cincy Magazine named their
Power 100 naming the Tri-State’s most influential CEO’s, Politicians and Civic Leaders. Included with those listed above,
is our very own Michael Rozow, Jr. As the Executive Director
of the Dearborn County Economic Development Initiative,
Rozow has been influential in our county, creating jobs and
working with companies to bring capital investment and tax
base to our area.
Rozow also serves in many other capacities in the Dearborn
County and Tri-State community. He is the President of the
Chamber, Administrative Manager for the Dearborn County
Redevelopment Commission, and President of the Dearborn
County Hospital Foundation. Rozow also serves on the Community Council for United Way of Dearborn/Ohio Counties,
the OKI Regional Council of Governments board, the advisory
board for Christ College of Nursing Health Services, Cincinnati Ballet emeritus and the Cincinnatus Association.

maintain successful programs.
Tuberville began his collegiate coaching career at Arkansas
State in 1980, coaching various segments of the Indians’ defense over the next five seasons. He began his coaching career
at Hermitage (Ark.) High School where he spent two years as
an assistant and two as a head coach.
“What an amazing honor, to be recognized with such incredible people,” said Rozow. “These are people that work hard to
make their communities and businesses successful, and I am
honored to be part of that group.”
A 1976 graduate of Southern Arkansas University, Tuberville
was a letterman at free safety and a two-year member of the
golf team at SAU. He is a 1972 graduate of Harmony Grove
High School in Camden, Ark. Tuberville is married to the
former Suzanne Fette of Guilford, Ind. They are the parents of
two sons, Thomas Tucker and Troy Allen.
