President’s Remarks
Welcome to the Pride in Art Festival 2009 “Faerie Tales; telling our stories.” This year’s
festival will be an exciting one with a diverse mixture of culture that will enrich our

Visual Art Exhibition
July 28th to August 14th
The Roundhouse Exhibition Hall
With our 2009 theme Faerie Tales, the Pride in Art Festival invited
Queer artists to explore the myths and legends that have
shaped us, and our community. Light or dark, strange or
powerful, these whimsical and sometimes political fables can
have far-reaching effects upon our collective psyche. PiAF
challenged artists to look back — into our childhoods, into our
histories, into the mists of time — and explore the symbols and
archetypes that have helped us to build Queer identities. The
juried Visual Art Exhibition features works in many different artistic
disciplines, and pairs established and emerging artists from
across BC and Canada.
Jurors: Valerie Arntzen, Martin Borden and Glenn Alteen

No Hate is an evening of antihomophobia films created by
youth 19 and under who are
passionate
about
promoting
diverse
schools,
free
from
homophobia & bullying.
Madonna, the most famous
woman alive, has become more
than just a pop megastar. She has
become part of global culture and redefined Woman forever. Her
influence is so powerful that it
extends deep into the subconscious world of imagination,
fantasy and dreams. Madonna in
My Mind is a new ensemble theatrical exploration for the live stage
that takes us to people’s most
intimate and astonishing dreams
about Madonna — friend, lover
and life force — inspiring many to
take control of their own destinies
and desires. Concept and direction by Terry Costa, from real life
dreams, fantasies and tales written
by folk from around the planet.
Presented in partnership with
Mirateca Arts.
tickets: $10
The films were created during a 5
day filmmaking bootcamp, hosted
by Out in Schools, a unique
program
which
brings
Gay,
Lesbian, Bisexual & Trans themed
films to BC schools and facilitates
anti-homophobia workshops with
students, and Reel Youth, a notfor-profit, media empowerment
program supporting young people
to create and distribute films about
their visions for a better world. A
co-production with Vancouver
Queer Film Festival, this screening
of emerging filmmakers will close
the Pride in Art Festival and open
the Vancouver Queer Film Festival.

With a background in dance and music and a formal education in
engineering, my art practice is informed by my diverse life experiences. As a

sexual autonomy, while attempting to maintain humour and joy in my work.

moving out west in 2000. While only an emerging artist, he's worked in abstract
acrylic on canvas to photography and digital painting. His subject matter

Sebastian De Line
There’s No Time for Sentiment - acrylic on canvas - 65 x 50cm
Sebastian De Line (1977) is a Vancouver-born artist living in Amsterdam, The
Netherlands. His work deals with spaces occupied by an ambiguity, the
conflictive nature of duality and how the tension of this 'space in between'
decentralizes this hegemonic polarity. His practice emphasizes process, with
an emphasis on questioning and serial experimentation through crossing
traditional media, painting, photography and drawing, to create
hybrid-mediums.

Coyote, and “musical genius”
(Xtra) Lyndell Montgomery
recently started talking about
resurrecting the kind of
magical collaboration that
Taste This was. For the
premiere of So The Story Goes
—an original interdisciplinary
performance— they’ll be
joined by Leslie Peters whose
video works, akin to “abstract
colour-field paintings (Globe
and Mail),” have screened
internationally from Buenos
Aries to Australia. Home
stories. Queer tales. True,
except when they’re not.
Stories that swell and implode
the spaces between cultural
institutions
and
queer
landscapes; between female
and male; between tightly
produced performance and
kitchen table talk.

Sugarbeach & Friends
9:00pm
A must-see showcase of some of
Vancouver’s top Gay and Lesbian
performers, hosted by Marlee &
Tully of Sugarbeach.
Currently celebrating its tenth season,
Synergy was formed in October 1998 as
a small ensemble of the Vancouver
Men's Chorus, under the direction of
the VMC's resident accompanist,
Stephen Smith. Over the last decade,
the select 12-voice a cappella group
has earned a reputation for great
singing in a variety of styles ranging
from renaissance to jazz, and from
motets to Motown! In addition to their
regular appearances in VMC mainstage concerts, Synergy has performed
at festivals in Vancouver, Chicago, San
Jose, Toronto, Montreal, and London,
England; in self-produced concerts and
as guests of other ensembles; in
benefits for gay and lesbian organizations in Vancouver, Victoria, and Kamloops; and at scores of parties,
weddings, and community events. In
2008 they released their first CD, entitled
Synergy: Songs of Nature, Love, and
Celebration.
Under the direction of our music director, Steve Ng, each singer brings his own
considerable musical talent to the
group – averaging over 15 years of
musical experience – creating a natural
harmony and easy camaraderie that
comes across in our performances.
Colla Voce is a member of GALA
Choruses (Gay and Lesbian Association
of Choruses).
Original music and performances
from acoustic singer-songwriter to
electro-disco-pop that will have
you dancing in your seats.
