RECORDING OF TELEPHONE CALLS
If you hear a short "beep" tone on your telephone about every 15 seconds, it meana that the person
with whom you are talking Is recording your conversation. -This signal Is provided by the telephone
company for your protection. Use of a recorder without this signal Is unlawful. If you do not want
a record made of what you are saying, ask the peraon with whom you are tall::inq to diaconnect
the recordinq machine. When he disconnects, you will no longer hear the . "beep" tone.

On the lower-priced station-to-station
call, you talk to anyone who answers at the number called. To make
a station-to-station call:
Call "Long Distance," and give the
operator the name of the town to
which you want to talk, and the telephone number, if you know it. For
example, say "Memphis, Tennessee,
9-8798," or "Memphis, Tennessee,
Mr. John Ford's residence at 197
Court Avenue."
Be sure not to specify any particular
person, or the number or location of
any private branch exchange station
(such as Room 711, Hotel Excelsior,
or Shipping Department). Such calls
take the higher person-to-person rate.
On person-to-person calls, you call
for a particular person, or a particular extension, such as "Room 711,
Hotel Excelsior." This service assures
your getting to talk to the person you
want. To make a person-to-person
call:

1. Rates are lower than on person-to-person
calls. See rate table on inside front cover of
this directory.
1. Charges begin when you star! talking with
the called person or with anyone at a called
extension telephone.
2. They are usually more quickly completed
than person-to-person calls.
2•. All Initial periods are for three minutes. The
rate for person-to-person calls Is somewhat
higher than for station-to-station calls.
3. The Initial period of conversation without
additional charge Is three minutes. Night &
Sunday rates apply from 6 P.M. to 4:30 A.M.
and all day Sunday.
4. The call Is timed from the moment the called
telephone Is answered.
Call "Long Distance," and give the
operator the town, the telephone number or address, and the name of the
person or department you want. For
example, say "Memphis, Tennessee,
9-8'198, Mr. John Ford," or "Memphis,
Tennessee, 9-8798, Extension 711."
3. We will make repeated attempts on the
same or a later day to reach the person with
whom you want to tall::, at different telephones
or even In different towns. No additional
charge Is made for this service.
COLLECT CALLS
FOR FASTER SERVICE
You may reverse charges; that is,
have them billed to the called telephone. Simply tell the operator you
want to call collect. If the called
party agrees to pay the charges, they
will be billed to his telephone.
CALL BY NUMBER ...
If you know the number of the distant telephone, give it to Long Dis-
tance. It will speed your call.
