BG CN The (Adrenal) Fatigue Solution Date Night: “Let’s go for a bike ride on ‘the Goose’!” “Ughh, I’ve been feeling pretty worn out and can’t get out of this funk. You go ahead.” Sound all too familiar? I About the Burnside Gorge Community Association Your community association is your link to the City of Victoria on neighbourhood ideas and concerns. We welcome residents to participate in our committees and we host regular meetings to bring neighbours together to ensure your voices are heard. The Burnside Gorge Community Association operates the Burnside Gorge Community Centre. The community centre is both a neighbourhood house and a recreation centre. We provide family resource programs and services that respond to the needs of families in the area such as family outreach, parent & child programs, childcare, a youth centre and special events. We offer educational and recreational activities such as yoga, dance and language courses. We also provide a number of popular special events, including the Selkirk Waterfront Festival, the Gorge Waterway Cleanup, the Halloween Monster Mash, the Magic of Christmas Gift Fair, Santa's Pancake Breakfast and the Community Christmas Dinner. Adrenal Fatigue is a hormone dysfunction that is caused from either an alteration in the endocrine, glandular, sympathetic nervous system, or methylation pathway. The bottom line is that an experienced physician will be able to provide a thorough medical history, 4 point salivary cortisol assessment, urinary neurotransmitter test, and the ability to rule out other factors so to confirm the primary root cause(s). Once the diagnosis is made, a customized treatment protocol is designed to restore hormones back to proper balance by supporting the body systems and adrenal gland, addressing dietary needs that are influencing the adrenal fatigue, and treating any contributing outliers, such as thyroid or candida imbalances. Enjoying that date together on the Galloping Goose Trail, playing with the grandkids, waking up with renewed energy, finding happiness in the hobbies that were once put aside are all small pieces of the overall quality of life that can be experienced with proper functioning health. With knowledge comes power, and an easy investigation into finding the root cause of dysfunction could make all the difference. After all, we only have one vehicle to ride through this wonderful life in. Drs. By Erin Gallagher Volunteer Administrator, Victoria Cool Aid Society T he Rock Bay Landing Boulevard Garden is an initiative of the Good Neighbour Committee. Members of local businesses, residents, police, shelter clients and staff joined together to beautify the boulevard across the street from the Rock Bay Landing shelter. Chew Excavating installed a sprinkler system and initially cleared the land. Residents of the Rock Bay Landing shelter donated their time weeding and preparing the ground for planting. April 10th was a collective group effort to plant the boulevard – police officers, members of council, city staff, shelter staff and many shelter clients donated their time and completed the boulevard planting. Thanks to all who helped out, especially… • Landscapers Rob Degros of Sidney Island Blue and Kerry Steinemann for providing their expertise to this project • the folks at Chew Excavating for preparing the space and installing the irrigation system • Rock Bay Landing residents for getting out to weed the site • David, Allison and Kathi of the Victoria Police Department for keeping the fire burning when it looked like it might go out • Ian Laing for making the arrangements for the plants • Victoria Cool Aid Society and Ian for providing the funding to buy the plants and other supplies • Victoria City Council for approving the Boulevard Gardening Guidelines BG CN T he City of Victoria and PlaceSpeak offer the public a way to find out what’s happening in their neighbourhood or community at large regarding rezoning applications. BG CN Burnside Gorge Community News: July-August 2015 7 Bugs And Yuck By Shauna Eiriksson, Tillicum Out-of-School-Care Manager D uring the month of May, the children in out of school care were given the opportunity to learn about the process of metamorphosis and to witness the process first hand. We received our bucket of eight wiggling caterpillars and eagerly watched them over the next few weeks as they first became huge and fuzzy caterpillars and then one Monday morning - we thought they all escaped! Much to our surprise and delight, they had all cocooned in the top of our bug house. Again, we had to be patient and wait. On May 25, our first butterflies began to emerge from the cocoon. The children were excited to see the butterflies but surprised to learn that butterflies bleed when they emerge. The children were eager to release them but we soon realized that a newly emerged butterfly cannot fly right away! Instead they start with wet and weak wings which must dry, then the butterfly will build its strength flapping its wings before it will fly. BG CN Soon our Painted Lady butterflies were ready to take to the sky. Since they emerged over three days, we released them in stages, as they began to flutter around the bug house. All eight of our caterpillars became butterflies and were all released into nature. Paint-out kits are now available and community members are invited to “Own the Block” by picking up a kit and painting out the BC Hydro poles in their neighbourhood with the appropriate colour pallet. The kits themselves contain 2 quart size cans of paint, gloves, stir stick, scraper, opener, and a 3.5 inch brush. They are much easier and lighter to carry than your standard gallon bucket, and the goal is to simply paint over a tag on a telephone pole in the same colour as the pole itself: • Green for pressure treated poles • Beige for newer non pressure treated poles • Dark Brown for older creosote poles 250-384-6424 | [email protected] 650 Hillside Ave Victoria BC, V8T 1Z2 Guaranteed service since 1959 250-384-4722 Fax 250-384-8860 [email protected] www.russhays.com Finlayson St Dodd’s Furniture 715Call 388-6663 across from Mayfair shopping centre • Gray for concrete poles If you are interested in participating in this program and Owning Your Block, please contact Rachel O’Neill at the Burnside Gorge Community Association, 250-388-5251.
