Conference Overview
Dear Friends,
The Farm Credit Council (FCC) and this year’s hosting bank, Farm Credit Bank of Texas, invite you to attend the
2012 National Directors Conference (NDC).
This year’s NDC will be held September 16-18, 2012, at the Grapevine Texan Resort in Grapevine, Texas (Dallas area).
As in recent years, the FCC board is encouraging all association board chairs and CEOs to attend, in addition to bank
CEOs and bank board members. Association representatives on the FCC board and the Presidents Planning
Committee (PPC) from each district should also attend.
The NDC continues to be an important forum for discussion, debate and consensus-building on key issues and the
strategic direction of the Farm Credit System. In 2011, the conference focused on assessing and managing risks in areas
such as adverse credits, the U.S. government debt rating, Farm Credit’s GSE status and the likelihood of a farm bill in 2012.
There are old and new risks and uncertainty for both Farm Credit customers and System institutions in 2012. The world
financial markets continue to be stressed; we continue to see significant restructuring of the financial sector; and there is
a “fiscal cliff ” looming due to substantial unfinished business in Congress. Last year, we saw one rating downgrade of U.S.
government debt, and the failure of Congress to get the nation’s fiscal house in order could lead to another downgrade
which may have consequences for our cost of funds. The NDC provides an important opportunity to address the key
issues facing Farm Credit.
Based on input from the FCC board, the PPC and the System Coordinating Committee, the 2012 conference will be used
as a forum to discuss strategic issues affecting Farm Credit. Strong leadership is essential for the System to be positioned for
success in the future, so we based the theme, Leadership Summit on Managing Farm Credit’s Future, around that concept.
The meeting’s agenda will include updates on the global economy, address the outlook for agriculture, and help bring into
focus some of the changes that may be coming as the result of the election and a possible new farm bill.
The PPC and the FCC board are committed to making this year’s NDC a valuable opportunity for leaders across Farm
Credit to come together and discuss issues that have implications for all organizations in the System individually and
for the System as a whole. A compelling and informative agenda has been planned, and we hope you will attend.

Welcome to Grapevine!
Grapevine,
named for its location on the Grape Vine Prairie near
Grape Vine Springs, is the oldest settlement in Tarrant County,
originating in 1844. Historic downtown Grapevine offers shops,
art galleries, more than 200 restaurants, winery tasting rooms,
outdoor recreational activities, award-winning festivals and events.
Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World has served outdoor enthusiasts
since the 1970s, when a young Johnny Morris started collecting
all the newest, premium fishing tackle he could find. He soon
introduced the first professionally rigged boat, motor and trailer
fish-ready package. The Bass Tracker boat “package” revolutionized
the marine industry. But Bass Pro Shops isn’t just about fishing —
it’s an outdoor retail leader in hunting, camping, nature gifts,
outdoor cooking and much more.
Cowboys Golf Club is the world’s first and only NFL-themed golf
club. It features a collection of Cowboys merchandise, memorabilia
and Super Bowl trophies. Stone markers highlighting historical
achievements of the team can be found around the 18-hole resortstyle course. Golf clinics are available and instructed by PGA
professionals. The club also hosts numerous social events and
conferences, and can accommodate more than 200 guests.
Grapevine Historical Museum, located in the Cotton Belt Depot
on Main Street, preserves a collection of documents and artifacts
from prehistoric people, Indians and emigrants who have passed
through the Grapevine area. The museum is run by the Grapevine
Historical Society, which is dedicated to preserving Grapevine’s
rich history.
Grapevine Mills Mall, minutes from the Dallas–Fort Worth
(DFW) International Airport, has 1.6 million square feet of
shopping, entertainment and restaurants. With 180 stores to
choose from — including Last Call by Neiman Marcus, the Saks
Fifth Avenue Off 5th outlet store, an indoor ice skating rink and
a 30-screen movie theatre — there’s something for everyone,
including Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World across from the mall.

Lake Grapevine, an 8,000-acre freshwater lake adjacent to the
Gaylord Texan, was impounded by the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers in 1952 when they dammed Denton Creek. It has
become a recreational destination for boaters, water skiers, wind
surfers and fishing enthusiasts. In addition, hiking and biking
aficionados love the miles of scenic trails that surround the lake.
Nash Farm, dating back to 1859, is the oldest operating farmstead in Tarrant County. The Nash family had a very productive
farm, which included milk cows, cattle, sheep, hogs and chickens.
They harvested cotton, wheat, hay, corn, oats and potatoes, and
produced butter and molasses. Their property consisted of the
farmhouse, a kitchen garden, a chicken coop, a smokehouse, a
barn and fruit orchards. The Grapevine Heritage Foundation plans
to completely restore the house and make it an interactive educational facility.
Sea Life Grapevine Aquarium offers an interactive, hands-on
experience and provides knowledgeable staff to answer questions
and offer facts about the sea creatures that live in the more than
200,000 gallons of water. Come see the amazing 360-degree
underwater ocean tunnel; take the shark walk; enjoy the 30 incredible displays; and observe more than 5,000 sea creatures. Get
close-up views of starfish, seahorses, stingrays, sharks and more.
Texas Motor Speedway, located in Fort Worth, is the second
largest racing venue in the country. Home to NASCAR and
IndyCar, the speedway also offers visitors the driving experience
of a lifetime! Take a ride around the track in a 450-horsepower
Corvette or stock car with a professional instructor, or take a
class and drive yourself around the 1-mile lap, which has been
driven by some of the world’s greatest drivers.
Wineries are abundant in the Grapevine area (including two in
DFW International Airport). Many can be found in historic
downtown, where these shops also offer wine-related gifts and
appetizers. You can enjoy their tasting rooms and learn winemaking techniques and food pairings. By 2005, Texas was the
fifth largest wine-producing state behind California, Washington,
New York and Oregon, with wine production of approximately
1.5 million gallons.

musical ensemble, Days of Grace. Singer Kathy Prather, who has
performed with the well-known Hash Brown Blues Band, is
accompanied by Leslie Blum on piano. Blum is an accomplished
worship leader who also performs with the Grapevine Opry. Our
very own Jimmy Dodson, chairman of the Farm Credit Bank of
Texas, will lead the service.

Home to the famous NFL Dallas Cowboys, the Cowboys Stadium
is the largest retractable-domed stadium in the world. It seats more
than 80,000 and includes more than 3,000 LCD screens, including
the largest high-definition television screen in the world. Besides
hosting the 2011 Super Bowl XLV, the Big 12 Championship
Game and the Cotton Bowl Classic, it also hosts a variety of other
college and sporting events.
Note: The Cowboys Stadium has the discretion to cancel tours
at any time; should this occur, another venue will be provided.
Lunch at Joe T. Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant in Fort Worth
Mr. and Mrs. Joe T. Garcia started their restaurant on July 4, 1935.
Customers would wait for hours just to sample their delicious
enchiladas. Word spread quickly, and over the years the
restaurant’s original 16-seat capacity has grown to accommodate
more than 1,000 people. The restaurant is internationally famous
and a winner of the James Beard Foundation Award for
Excellence. The Garcia family also owns and operates a
small bakery and café, and produces many varieties of salsa.
Cattle Raisers Museum in Fort Worth
The 10,000-square-foot Cattle Raisers Museum was established
to enhance the public’s awareness and appreciation of ranching
history. It follows stories from the past 150 years of challenges
and accomplishments in cattle commerce. Exhibits include a
wide range of saddles, 52 pairs of spurs and 1,014 branding irons,
including the 1819 J Cross W brand, the oldest iron continually
used by a single Texas family.

This original Neiman Marcus store was opened in 1907 by
Texans A.L. and Carrie Marcus Neiman and Herbert Marcus.
The trio had success with a sales-promotion firm, which
brought them two offers for their business: One was a
franchise with a certain new soft drink company, and the
other was $25,000 in cash. They turned down the soda
company, saying “They’ll never make it!” That company,
of course, was Coca-Cola! Instead, they took the cash and
established Neiman Marcus, which became a landmark in
retail history. Experience the epitome of Neiman Marcus
luxury and an exclusive fashion show, with lunch at the
famous Zodiac Room. After enjoying their famous and

Andy Andrews
Speaker and Novelist
Andy Andrews is an internationally known speaker and novelist, who has been
hailed as a “modern-day Will Rogers.” His works have sold millions of copies
worldwide. Using his own personal story and research on the lives of key historic
figures as inspiration, Andrews penned “The Traveler’s Gift: Seven Decisions That
Determine Personal Success.” Andrews has been received at the White House
and has spoken at the request of four U.S. presidents.
Paul Mobley
Photographer
In his book, “American Farmer: Portraits From the Heartland,” Paul Mobley’s
intimate photographs celebrate the spirit of rural life through the faces and words
of the men and women who sustain and nurture the land. He began his training as
a photographer at Detroit’s College for Creative Studies, and apprenticed with famous photographers Annie Leibovitz and David Langley. Mobley received the
2009 Western Heritage Award for best photography book from the National
Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.
Dr. Bruce A. Scherr
Chairman of the Board and CEO, Informa Economics, Inc.
Dr. Scherr heads up Informa Economics, Inc., a world leader in broad-based
domestic and international agricultural and commodity/product market research,
analysis, evaluation and consulting. Among his many achievements, he is a former
president of Agri-Commodities, Inc., an agriculture consulting firm, and a member
of the Global Strategy Institute Advisory Council of the Center for Strategic and
International Studies. Scherr was named a 2007 Distinguished Agriculture
Alumnus from Purdue University.
Matthew Slaughter
Economist
Matthew Slaughter is the associate dean of the MBA program and the Signal
Companies professor of management at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth
College. He is a member of the Congressional Budget Office’s Panel of Economic
Advisors. From 2005 to 2007, Slaughter was a member of the Council of Economic
Advisors in the Executive Office of the President, where he advised the president
and the Cabinet on issues such as international trade and investment, currency and
energy markets, and the competitiveness of the U.S. economy.

Take the north exit out of the DFW International Airport toward highways 635/121 and take the Bass Pro

on Highway 26 West. Continue through the traffic light at Fairway Drive. Turn right into the hotel entrance
on Gaylord Trail.

Take the southwest exit out of Love Field onto Herb Kelleher Way and take a right on Mockingbird Lane. Follow Mockingbird to I-35E north. Take I-35E north to 635 West; exit 121 N/Bass Pro Drive (#36A). Keep right
at the fork in the ramp. Turn left onto Bass Pro Drive. Go straight past Embassy Suites (on your right) and at
the light go left on Highway 26 West. Continue through the traffic light at Fairway Drive. Turn right

Conference Fees
The estimated cost of the conference will be approximately $1,700 per attendee. The spouse and guest registration fee is $425 per person. The registration fee covers all meals, business meetings and the agricultural
tour. Spouse/guest tours will be priced separately on a per-tour basis. Each bank will need to determine how
it will cover the cost of its association and entity representatives’ registration fees, travel and per diem. The
banks will be billed after the conference for costs associated with attending staff and spouses/guests.
