I am honored to have been nominated for the position. I have been
involved with UPS for DownS since the birth of our daughter
Allie 10 years ago. My wife Lisa and I came to UPS for DownS
as the parents of a newborn child with Down syndrome. We
were looking for support and guidance on this new and unexpected turn that our journey through life had taken. We not
only found support from a group of caring people, we also
found much more.

May Meeting Re-Cap
GR A N D PA R E N T A N D E X T E N D E D FA M I LY M E E T I N G
On May 25, Diane Gould, a licensed clinical therapist, facilitated a meeting for grandparents and extended family, along
with input from parents. Ms. Gould has been involved and interested in disability-related issues since her teenage years.
She currently works for Niles Township and has a special interest in the impact that children with special needs has on the
dynamics of extended families.
Gould pointed out that it was likely that the families in attendance at the meeting
were likely not those in which great amounts of family conflict exist and that it
was more likely that those who couldn't get their extended family to participate
would be the ones who could benefit most from this type of experience.
In her experience, concerns of parents of children with special needs as it relates to
grandparents/extended family include:
•lack of appreciation of the stress of parenting a child with special needs;
•wanting more help from extended family;
•unsolicited advice or blame (e.g. if you would only parent differently, behaviors
wouldn’t occur.)
•grandparents are in denial about disability or too cheerful and unrealistic about
outcomes (parents felt that grandparents weren’t “getting it.”)
On the flip side, when Gould met with grandparents, they expressed that their concerns were:
•Grandparents felt that it was their role to be cheerful and encouraging to their kids (that they would be happy and
enthusiastic to their children, but would go home and cry - they didn’t want their kids to see their sadness/worry).
•They wanted to be strong for their kids.
•Grandparents expressed that they aren’t only worried about outcomes for their grandchild, but that they are seeing
their own baby in pain and they can’t do anything to fix it.
•Grandparents expressed that they feel like there is nothing they can do to help.

DINNER
AND
A NNUAL MEETING
The annual dinner meeting
was held on June 22, 2004 at
the Prairie Rock Brewing
Company. There was a good
turn out of forty parents. The
evening included dinner, cash
bar, great socializing and, of
course, some business.
One of our struggles this year
has been our inability to provide child care at our monthly
meetings. GiGi’s Playhouse
has been a tremendous
resource to families and people with Down syndrome. We
are fortunate to have the

Down Syndrome 101
DS101 session was a huge success! We
had a great group of siblings and cousins
who came to learn about Down syndrome. The kids all did a great job of
listening and asking questions. Some of
the tough questions we talked about
included:
What is DS?
Why do some people have DS?
Why do people with DS have a harder time doing
things?
Do people with DS grow up? and many more.
A huge THANK YOU to all who participated and
provided feedback.
Based on the positive comments received, UPS
for DownS will offer this session again. Watch
future newsletters for a date in January or
February. If you have any questions or comments, please contact Shari Andress at [email protected] or 847-891-6678.
Teen Scene
By Pat Fogarty
UPS for DownS Teen Scene continues to meet and have fun during the summer months. We’ve
got a variety of activities planned, and hope all teens (12 to 18 years of age) are able to join us.
Remember, all activities are just $5 per teen. Thank you UPS for DownS for supplementing any
remaining costs!
In May, Anita Herr taught the girls some make-up tips and gave each girl her own little make-up
case and nail polish. The boys didn’t get away without some attention, however. They all got a
hand-softening treatment despite their protests that that
stuff is for girls! Then they escaped to watch Crocodile
Dundee, with an occasional glance over at the girls to giggle. The Teens also met on May 22 at Lollipots (111 E.
Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg) and painted and decorated their own ceramic plate. The finished plates are
awesome to behold! (Note: If you made a plate and haven’t
receive it yet, you can find it at GiGi’s Playhouse).
June’s activities included miniature golfing at Congo River
Miniature Golf (1325 Barrington Road, Hoffman Estates).
The weather was perfect and the Teens had a great time!
The Teens joined GiGi’s Playhouse Shrek and Pizza Night
and the 4th of July Parade in Hoffman Estates.
Emma and Katrina had a unique method of
golfing each hole at the same time, and with the
same color ball!

P H O T O RE Q U E S T!
Thank you to those of you who have given me a picture of your child for the dinner
dance. These beautiful faces will be placed around the Cotillion as decoration and
will also be used in the program.
The deadline is August 31st . Any close up picture will do, just send it in.
These pictures and introductions really add to the evening and speak volumes about
our children. Get them in early and mark it off your to-do list.
Guidelines for picture:
1. Provide a photo or digital photo (high resolution) - any size or color.
2. Must be a head shot or close-up of your child
3. Please contact Stacy Graves to arrange delivery of photo (see below)
4. Brief introduction of your child-some examples of things to include- name, age,
accomplishments, hobbies, favorite thing to do, etc. This is intended to be a way for
you to introduce your child to those attending the dance and describe why they are
special. Keep to 150 words or less.
Submit photos or questions to Stacy Graves at [email protected] or call 847608-9781.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS - TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2004 - 7:30 P.M. AT GIGI'S PLAYHOUSE
As part of our ongoing mission to promote literacy for all children with Down syndrome, we have invited Janet Rickert to come and speak with us. She has an
exciting presentation entitled, "It's All In How You Look At It." Janet is a local
author who wrote the Russ series books. Her son Russ, has Down syndrome.
UPS For DownS has distributed her books to local area schools and
libraries during our annual book donations for Down syndrome
awareness month.
After Janet's presentation, we will be offering examples of books
that you can make for your child to help them learn to read. We
will also be offering follow-up workshops where we will help you
make your own books.
If you have any questions or comments, please contact Shari
Andress at [email protected] or 847-891-6678.

Prepare to sing, dance sneeze and even "stick together like glue" on Tuesdays when Jim Gill leads workshops in
family music play. These workshops are filled with imaginative songs and play activities that are meant to be
played by children and parents together.
Jim will sing songs from his four recordings for young children and lead games that he has developed in his work
with families over the last twenty years.
ABOUT JIM GILL
Jim Gill has led programs in family music play for the last twenty years at various family
support and therapeutic agencies in the Chicago area. His programming is based on the
idea that all children best develop and express their abilities through play. Play is also, by
nature, an inclusive activity and Jim's programming has always served a wide range of ability levels.
Jim speaks to early childhood educators throughout the country about the many benefits of
play in young children's lives. He has a Master's Degree in Child Development from the
Erikson Institute of Chicago.

Commitment to Excellence Award
Many of us who are parents, friends or family of a person with Down syndrome have had our lives
touched in many wonderful ways by others.
UPS for DownS would like to formally recognize the people or organizations that have enriched
the lives of people with Down syndrome. In an effort to do so, UPS for DownS has established
the “Commitment to Excellence” Award for recognition of those who have helped people with
Down syndrome, their families and/or this organization. We encourage you to nominate your
educators, medical professionals, organizations, coaches, or volunteers.
The awards will be presented at the UPS for DownS Fall Event on October 15, 2004. We look forward to saying “thank you” to the many wonderful people and organizations that make the world
a better place for people with Down syndrome through the gifts of their time, talent, treasure or
love.
Questions? Call Patricia Shimanek at 630-595-8147.
