amed for the red soil that flows through it, the Red
River begins its easterly course through Texas and
Oklahoma before turning south to join the Atchafalaya River in Louisiana. For one-third of its journey,
the Red River forms the boundary between Texas
and Oklahoma. The Red River Valley of Texas and
Oklahoma is as colorful as its namesake tributary.
Historically, this area has always been a gateway, whether
it was a gateway between the United States and New Spain,
a gateway to the great Indian Nations, or a gateway for the
cattle trails of the Old West. Today, the Red River Valley is still
a gateway – your gateway to the history, people and places
that make Texas and Oklahoma legendary.
of the Choctaw, Comanche, Kiowa, Southern Cheyenne and
Wichita Indians. See Fort Sill, Oklahoma, the only still active
Army installation of all the forts on the South Plains built during the Indian Wars. Explore communities first settled in the
days when Texas was its own country and pioneers arrived via
steamboats that traveled up the Red River.
Experience how the traditions of the Old West live on where a
network of cattle trails and stagecoach lines joined the famous
Chisholm Trail to cross over the Red River. From cattle barons to
oil field wildcatters... from the home of a 24-term Congressman
to the birthplace of a United States President... from Geronimo’s
last home to the home of “The Last Picture Show”... from heritage homes to historic downtowns – you’ll find it all in the Red
River Valley of Texas and Oklahoma.
The Red River Valley also abounds in natural beauty and opportunities for outdoor recreation. Lake Texoma is the second

largest lake in both Texas and Oklahoma, and the eleventh
largest reservoir in the United States. Numerous other lakes
scattered across the Red River Valley await avid anglers and
lovers of water sports. Some of the top-ranked golf courses in
the two-state region are found in the Red River Valley. The LBJ
National Grasslands, part of the Ouachita National Forest, the
Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, the Chickasaw
National Recreation Area and a myriad of state parks in both
Texas and Oklahoma beckon hikers, campers, bird watchers,
trail riders and stargazers. The contrasts of flatlands, rolling
prairies and rising mountains add to the natural beauty of the
Red River Valley region.
There’s always something fun to see or do in the Red River
Valley. A 125-year-old trade day, the world’s oldest blue grass
festival under original management and the country’s largest
sanctioned century bicycle ride all call the Red River Valley
region home. Then there’s the Texan-ization of a world famous

landmark – a cowboy hat topping off a 65-foot tall replica of the
Eiffel Tower! You’ll find a zoo that grew out of the heritage of a
community circus in Texas and an Oklahoma town that is the
summer home to two circuses. Where else but the Red River
Valley can you find an event that features goat barbecue or a
festival that pays tribute to watermelon? Community theaters,
art galleries and history museums throughout the region offer
a wide range of cultural and educational attractions. Antique
shops, specialty boutiques, outlet stores and unique eateries
can be found throughout north Texas and southern Oklahoma.
The Red River Valley is home to several historic ranches and
many champion reining and cutting trainers. The area is truly
a mecca for world class equine enthusiasts.
