From the Chair of the Board of Directors
Letter from the President

I am delighted to share some wonderful news with you about student
scholarships at WCC. The Board of Directors voted to increase the
amount awarded to each student who receives a scholarship. In recent
years, the maximum scholarship award was $800 per term. For the
current Fall term, the maximum award is $1,000. This increase will help
each awardee to meet the financial obligations of their education.
The WCC Foundation plays a very special part in this process, and for
that, we cannot thank you enough.
It is gratifying to see students who come to WCC succeed in their chosen
area of study, and earn a certificate or degree. And it’s even more fulfilling
to know that donors support the students through gifts to the Foundation. Your dollars are more than just money – they support childcare, tuition,
scholarships, a chance for a career change, books, and life enrichment
opportunities -- I could go on and on. But what lies beneath all of your
efforts is the chance to make a difference in a student’s life. And that’s
exactly what you’re doing – making a difference, one student at a time.
s a lifelong member of the community, I have attended local schools
and supported public education. While I had family support
for my educational journey, not all students are as fortunate. At
Washtenaw Community College, many students receive support through
WCC Foundation scholarships. As chair of the Board of Directors of the
WCC Foundation, I am honored to represent the volunteers who help to
provide support to deserving students.
For 30 years, we have helped WCC students achieve their dreams. Thank
you for your support!
Sincerely,
Betsy Petoskey
Chair, WCC Foundation Board of Directors
his school year marks the 50th anniversary of Washtenaw Community
College. It is an important milestone, and we will celebrate it with
events and gatherings throughout the year and into 2016.
Many things have changed over the last 50 years, but our mission has
not. We remain an affordable college where students come first. We are a
valued resource in this region, opening our doors and providing a lifetime
of learning opportunities to more than 20,000 students a year.
With your gifts to the Foundation, you are changing lives. You couldn’t ask
for a more noble cause. The dollars you contribute provide the stepping
stones needed for our students to achieve their hopes and dreams.
With gratitude,
Dr. Rose B. Bellanca, Ed.D.
President, Washtenaw Community College

H
olly Munker, a mother of two, was tending bar two nights a week
when she was admitted to Washtenaw Community College’s
radiography program in 2011.
She was also pregnant. "Taking a full class load and taking care of the family
was a lot of work,” she said, “but WCC has a well-known radiography
program, and my education here will help open doors for me.”
Holly persevered and graduated last June. She is continuing her education
at WCC in an advanced certificate program focused on CT scans.
She will complete the program in April 2016.
Holly is looking forward to working in radiography, and she attributes
her success in part to scholarships from the WCC Foundation, which she
received the past four years. “I didn’t have time to work while taking a full
load of classes and clinicals,” Holly said. "All of my spare time has been
spent studying. Without the help from the Foundation, I wouldn’t have
made it this far.”

A
s a social worker for the State of Michigan, Martha McClatchey
worked in specialized adoptions with a goal of finding homes
for permanent wards moving through the foster care system.
Through her work, she met and cared for hundreds of children. Her love
and compassion for children led her to create the McClatchey Family
Scholarship Fund. Per her request, the McClatchey Scholarship will be
awarded each year to former or current foster children.
When asked why she chose Washtenaw Community College for the
scholarship, McClatchey said, “WCC provides educational opportunities
for everyone whether seeking the basics of a formal academic start or the
technical training necessary for an immediate job.”
After her social work career, McClatchey joined the Department of
Student Services in the College of Literature Science and Arts at the
University of Michigan, and worked with incoming and continuing
students. She has high praise for the students who transferred into
U-M from WCC. “I met with students who came to Michigan from
community colleges all over the state,” McClatchey said. “The bestprepared students came from WCC.”
W
hen Sally Adler began teaching
at Washtenaw Community
College more than 20 years ago,
she discovered the job she always wanted.
Over the years, she’s learned that building
relationships with students is not only an
important aspect of her job but it’s also the
most rewarding. “I spend a lot of time with
my students, and I know their problems,” she
said.
There have been times when students have confided in Adler about their difficulties in making ends
meet – an issue Adler encountered during her own college experience. “I know what it’s like to be
hungry and barely scraping by,” she said. She felt the need to do something to help, so she established
the Sally Adler Childcare Scholarship Endowment Fund.
As an instructor, Adler teaches her students about child care, development and education. According
to Adler, she’s not the only one who is teaching in her classroom. “I’ve learned so much from my
students,” she said. “They’re amazing!”
WCC provides educational
“opportunities
for everyone.

eth Gannon devoted her life to improving children’s lives. A mother to 23—eight her own and
15 from troubled families—she was a caretaker for children well into her 80s. She and her husband Pat, a self-employed builder, worked hard to support those 23 children.
Beth also worked afternoons and evenings at the Ypsilanti Post Office as a mail sorter for 12 years
when Pat was unable to work due to illness.
Pat passed away in 1978 and Beth in 2002. Her devotion to the next generation is cemented in her
children’s minds, and they are continuing her legacy with an endowment in Beth’s name.
Since 2006, the B eth G annon E ndowment has supported single parents who are students at
Washtenaw Community College. Her daughter, Jill Beauchamp, a former faculty member at WCC,
was moved to donate to the WCC Foundation after learning a student’s financial difficulties caused
her to drop out. After Jill and her husband Dan funded five scholarships, they decided to fund an
endowment with the support of extended members of the Gannon family. They initiated a variety of
ways to raise money, including a family fun run.
M
any high school students have their senior pictures taken before
the start of their last year of school. They spend time finding the
right clothing and the right settings for the photos. They also
spend money on the photographer. When Danny Friedman learned how
much senior pictures would cost, he balked and said that the money could
be better spent helping a student pay for community college. Danny asked
that his photo fees, together with his savings from work and Bar Mitzvah
gifts, be given to the Washtenaw Community College Foundation for a
student scholarship. His parents, Rich and Joanna Friedman, agreed and
offered to match his gift amount. Together they created the Friedman
Family Scholarship.
“As he approached college, Danny became increasingly uncomfortable
with the realization that he could afford to go to any school that admits
him, while other kids couldn’t afford any higher education,” said his
mother Joanna. “He wanted to do what he could to make a difference
rather than simply ignoring such a glaring problem.”
This fall, the WCC Foundation will award the first Friedman Family
Scholarship and it will definitely make a difference for a WCC student.
He wanted to do what he could to

a difference…

In 1997, when Beth Gannon was 80. The Ann
Arbor News featured a story about her, and noted
that she was mothering her last child, then a
sophomore at Ypsilanti High School. She told
reporter Robert L. Romaker that she stayed busy
with gardening and plants when her child was at
school. “I’ve devoted my life to nurturing God’s
creations,” she is quoted. “I started with kids and I
will end up with plants.” Little did she know that
her legacy would help enrich and grow the lives of
countless students to come. Little did she know

WCC is an amazing
resource in the community.
We think it’s a great place
to put our support.
”
–Roddy Wares
Roddy Wares and her husband Allen Newman are
devotees of the Peace Neighborhood Center. Allen
served as president of the board and is currently
on the advisory board, while Roddy worked as
the development director and still coordinates the
annual fundraiser. For them, supporting Washtenaw
Community College students seemed a natural
fit with Peace’s mission of providing community
services, and so the Roddy Wares and Allen
Newman Scholarship Fund was created.
“I see WCC as a critical link for so many people,”
Roddy said. “It really is an interface for people who
need training and support. They can go from a place
where they’re stuck, to a place where their potential
can really grow.” “Perhaps the biggest similarity Peace and WCC
share is access”, Roddy added. Just like Peace, the
College gives people without privilege ways to
succeed. It fits into our personal mission of caring
for the community.” Overall, “I think WCC does a fabulous job,” Roddy
said. “It’s the answer for so many, for those who
want to get into the workforce or go to a four-year
college or university. It’s just an amazing resource in
the community, and we really love it. We think it’s a
great place to put our support.” They felt strongly about providing educational
“opportunities
for their children.
”
–Michael Finney
M
ichael Finney is well-known as the first president and CEO of Ann Arbor SPARK, an
organization dedicated to economic development, the growth of companies and the creation
of jobs in the local community. Finney has also contributed to Washtenaw Community
College’s growth and development by serving as a member of the Foundation Board of Directors.
Michael attributes his success and dedication to community to his parents, Arthur and Laura Finney.
Arthur worked in an automotive manufacturing plant in Flint, which was home to General Motors’
Buick and Chevrolet divisions and Laura was a homemaker. While neither of them were high school
graduates, they felt strongly about providing educational opportunities for their children. To honor his
parents and their belief in the power of education and to help students at WCC, Michael created the
Arthur and Laura Finney Endowment Fund.
W
ashtenaw Community College President Rose Bellanca
is living proof of the life-changing experiences that
can happen at a community college. As a high school
student, Bellanca had her heart set on being a teacher, but she
was tracked into going to secretarial school upon graduation.
Determined to become a teacher, she pursued an associate degree
at Macomb Community College (MCC) which led her to get
her bachelor’s degree and eventually propelled her into a teaching
career. She taught at Chippewa Valley Schools, MCC and Wayne
State University, where she also earned her doctorate in education.
“A community college experience changes lives,” Bellanca said.
“Educational dreams are realized, businesses are started, skills are
refined, new languages are learned, and the list goes on. As I’ve said on many occasions, there are no
dead ends at a community college—only paths of opportunity to follow, which weave into the fabric of
healthy and vibrant communities.”
Belief in the life-changing effect of the community college experience inspired Bellanca and her husband
to create the Rose and Joe Bellanca Scholarship Fund. “To me, community colleges are a very
special place because they helped make my dream come true,” Bellanca said.

B
ob and Jean Chapman know exactly how integral Washtenaw Community
College can be in changing students’ lives—they’ve experienced it firsthand.
T
im and Julie Kissel believe
in the power of education.
Julie is an instructor at
Washtenaw Community College
and Tim, a former teacher, works
as a school administrator. In their
roles, the Kissels touch the lives of
students every day. Three years ago,
they made the decision to support
students financially through a
scholarship fund at WCC. Around
the time they were working to
establish the scholarship, Tim’s uncle Alvin Temme passed away. The
Kissels chose to honor his memory by creating The Alvin C. Temme
Endowment Fund. Like the Kissels, Alvin was an educator; he taught
horticulture and agriculture at the Pendleton Reformatory (now the
Indiana Pendleton Correctional Facility) for forty years.
“We feel so fortunate to be able to give back and support the students at
WCC,” Julie said. “Alvin appreciated kindness and we want to remember
that always through our giving.”

”
Jean worked to support her husband as he finished college, and then she
stayed at home to raise their three boys. But in the mid-1980s, when her children
grew a little more independent and were in junior high and high school, she decided
she wanted to pursue her own education again. She hadn’t been to college in over
a decade. She thought WCC might be the right place to prepare for earning a
bachelor’s degree.
“I loved it,” Jean said. “I loved the teachers, the students I met and the education
I received. The smaller classes were warm and welcoming and I had all the support
I needed. There was a strong community atmosphere because everyone was in the
same boat, trying to pursue a goal.”
Jean eventually transferred to St. Thomas University in St. Paul, Minnesota and
earned her degree in social work. But WCC holds a special place in her heart and
for that reason, Jean established the Jean G. Chapman Endowment Fund. “I
support WCC wholeheartedly,” she
said. “I know what it did for me, and
I’ve heard testimony from others whose
experiences are very much like mine.” Bob served on the WCC Foundation
Board of Directors for two terms, and
he also served as chair. He knows the
college is a place that holds many stories
similar to his wife’s. “I really am a strong
supporter of what WCC brings to our
community, the value it brings and the
lives that it changes,” he said.

–Gunder Myran
under Myran was Washtenaw Community College’s second president, serving from 1975 to
1998. During his presidency, he considered his wife Marliss to be WCC’s first lady. “She was
my partner, my cheerleader and my supporter,” he said. “She was very involved in activities
on campus, as well as entertaining College guests in our home.” To celebrate Marliss’ contributions
to the College during his tenure as president, Myran created the Gunder and Marliss Myran
Endowment Fund.
As president, Gunder enjoyed working with the
faculty of the College. In gratitude for those
relationships, he designated the fund be used to
support technological advances and innovative
approaches to learning and teaching.
“I recognized that there were unmet needs
and that I could contribute a fund for faculty
innovation,” he said. “I wanted to thank the
faculty for their partnership during my time at
WCC.”

This year, Washtenaw Community
College celebrates its 50th
anniversary—a half century of
developing students who are able
to enrich their lives and the local
community. There is no doubt that
the college has played a crucial role
in the growth of Ann Arbor as the
thriving educational center it is
today.
As a donor to the WCC Foundation,
you are an integral part of this
story. Your choice to support WCC
students has greatly impacted
countless lives and the community
at large. The Foundation, and the
students, are deeply grateful for
your generosity and advocacy of
access, success and innovation.
This Annual Report was designed and produced by WCC Marketing.
