Nope! this is not music theory
This book will help inspire and improve your songwriting.
You’ll gain knowledge of how music works, and it will open
up new possibilities for your creative power. It will be a great
asset to understand the craftsmanship behind songs that
have inspired you. We’ve purposely omitted musical topics
that are less relevant for the songwriter. We don’t like the
”theory” in ”music theory” – it’s all about doing!
Writing songs is easier if you know how to get creative,
get yourself in a good mood and be inspired. Therefore, we
have devoted several chapters to tactics and practical tips.
Writing lyrics is not just about the art of forging words, how
to rhyme and how to create form and development. It is also
great to know about things like conceptual thinking, the
perspective of the narrative and connotations. Also, music
production is more than just technology; you can give a
chorus more punch by rethinking chords, placing the vocals in
the right register, introducing a key change etcetera.
Authors Jan Sparby and Johan Christoffersson
are songwriters, music producers and educators, both with degrees from the Royal
College of Music in Sweden.
