MORE FOOD FOR PEOPLE IN NEED
2
The new Morgan & Morgan, P.A. Hunger Relief Center sets a standard in the
nation for innovative design, efficiencies, and program possibilities for food banks.
The 100,000-square-foot distribution center’s greatly expanded overall capacity
sets the stage for millions more pounds of food per year to be provided to people
in need and also helps ensure our mission can move forward for at least the next
two decades.

Our Mission :
To Fight Hunger
in Central Florida
Providing access to food and other grocery products
to meet the need.
Promoting and supporting the development of our
partner agencies’ ability to fulfill their missions.
Mobilizing leaders and communities by bringing visibility
to the invisible problem of hunger and poverty.
Developing more holistic and county-specific solutions
to hunger in Central Florida.

e look to the future with hope because of the phenomenal year we just experienced. However, our work
is bittersweet. While we succeeded in distributing more food than ever before, the mere fact that we
needed to do so is a reflection of the plight of thousands of our neighbors.
Incredible opportunities existed this past year, and we saw so much come to fruition. The single biggest
accomplishment was the completion of the new Morgan & Morgan, P.A. Hunger Relief Center. The 100,000square-foot, state-of-the-art facility was finished on time and on budget. As the Center’s lead investor,
Morgan & Morgan helped make this project a reality by rallying the community. Significant financial support
was also provided by the Darden Foundation, Walt Disney World, Dr. Phillips Charities, the Elizabeth Morse
Genius Foundation, Bank of America, Publix and ABC Fine Wine & Spirits. And, right at the beginning of this
effort, the Second Harvest Board of Directors stepped up and invested in the cause, showing their personal
commitment. For the full list of our capital campaign supporters, please see page 13 of this report. We feel
a sense of deep gratitude for the generosity that’s helping Central Floridians on a daily basis.
The new facility will provide a significant return on investment in terms of over a billion dollars’ worth of food
during the next 20 years. Since our capacity to provide more food has significantly increased, all six counties
have benefited from the enhanced infrastructure. Large amounts of fresh, nutritious foods are being distributed –
thanks to a 450 percent increase in cooler and freezer space. We’re seeing significant progress: a spike in
community involvement through the Walt Disney World Volunteer areas; improved and increased service to
our partner feeding programs in the Dr. Phillips Charities Agency Mart; and the changing of lives through
our culinary training program, which takes place in both the Darden Foundation Community Kitchen and
Morgridge Family Foundation Classroom.
We appreciate the incredible service and dedication of our 550-plus partner agencies, as well as the local food
pantries, shelters, soup kitchens and feeding programs. They are doing heroic work day in and day out.
Although we’re glad to have the opportunity to tell you what we do, it’s equally important that you know
how we do it. Second Harvest is Central Florida’s hunger relief network – we multiply the power of giving and
distribute $9 worth of groceries for every dollar donated. Charity Navigator, the foremost charity watchdog
in the nation, has once again awarded us its highest rating of Four Stars.
With your support, we continue to close the gap between people in need and the millions of pounds of food
that is wasted each year. Thank you!

FOOD DISTRIBUTION
Kids café
A healthy snack and meal service program
providing food to needy children in the
greater Orlando area during afterschool
hours.
In fiscal year 2012/2013, Second
Harvest provided food to 13 afterschool
Kids Café sites in three Central Florida
counties. A total of 215,544 meals were
served to an average of 1,140 children
daily. Since the program’s inception
in 1993, more than 1.5 million meals
have been served. This program also
offers enrichment activities in a safe,
accessible environment.
summer food
program
Provides lunches and snacks to children
18 and under during summer recess.
During 50 operational days last summer
(a time when children in needy areas
lack access to school lunch programs),
70,641 meals were served at 23 sites
in four counties. With support from
generous funders, we were also able to
provide over 15,000 take-home, shelfstable food packs for the weekends.
Since the program commenced in 2008,
Second Harvest has provided more than
304,400 summer meals.
hi-five kids
pack program
A weekend food program designed to
bridge the nutritional gap that exists when
elementary school children lack access to
school cafeterias.
Students who rely on school lunch and
breakfast programs are identified by
educators who then distribute kidfriendly, shelf-stable packs on Fridays
in a non-stigmatizing manner. Last year,
42,917 food packs were provided to
needy children at 27 elementary schools.
Since 2006, more than 221,000 packs
have been distributed – the equivalent
of 661,677 meals. The Hi-Five Kids Pack
Program has been made possible by
funding from Darden Restaurants, Winter
Park Health Foundation, Health Central,
Junior League of Greater Orlando,
Target, Kohl’s Department Stores, and
Food Lion, Inc., as well as many other
generous partners.
community
food drives
grocery alliance
An amazing 1,013,840 pounds of
non-perishable grocery products were
collected in fiscal 2012/2013 through
Community Food Drives:
• Boy Scouts of America/Scouting
for Food
• National Association of Letter
Carriers Food Drive
• WESH News Channel 2’s “Share Your
Christmas” Food Drive
• Rollins Helping Hands Campaign Drive
• CANstruction
• Local church, school and workplace
drives
This expansive food recovery program
collects wholesome, unsold food from
more than 300 participating retail store
locations throughout Central Florida.
The Grocery Alliance product mix –
which includes meat, produce, dairy,
bakery and dry goods – offers a wide
range of nutritious and sought-after
foods. In 2012/2013, 17,049,188 pounds
of food was distributed through this
program – 43 percent of our overall
distribution. Thanks to these retail
partnerships, Grocery Alliance has
distributed over 47 million pounds of
food, to date, to our neighbors in need.
tefap distribution
Mobile Food Drops
The Florida Department of Agriculture
awarded distribution contracts for
Orange, Seminole, Lake, Brevard,
Volusia and Marion counties to Second
Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida for
its distribution program of government
food commodities. In fiscal year
2012/2013, a total of 6,773,581 pounds
of these wholesome products were
made available to Central Floridians
in need.
A mobile drop is a unique and effective
approach to distributing food in
underserved communities by providing
fresh produce and other nutritious food
directly to partner agencies. With each
delivery, the truck transports at least
10,000 pounds of fruit, vegetables and
dry goods directly to the communities
where low-income individuals live.
PRODUCE PROGRAM
Amid growing awareness of the link
between nutrition and health, Second
Harvest has committed to increasing
the amount of fresh fruit and vegetables
available to clients year-round. Our
Produce Program works with the
agriculture and produce industry, as well
as organizations such as the Society of
St. Andrew and the Florida Association
of Food Banks – distributing 3,274,061
pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables
in fiscal year 2012/2013.
Second helpings
This prepared-food rescue program
collects and delivers donations from
local restaurants, hotels and resorts.
The program distributed 1,048,910
pounds of food in fiscal
2012/2013 to agencies
that provide on-site
meals for clients.
This program prevents millions of
pounds of produce from being
destroyed while those in need face
another day without food. In 2012/2013,
Second Harvest distributed more than
1,052,000 pounds of critically needed
food through monthly mobile drops in
four of the counties we serve: Lake,
Seminole, Orange and Osceola.
Other Food
Industry Partners
In addition to our programs, Second
Harvest was able to distribute over
6 million pounds of donated food and
non-food products to Central Florida
thanks to more than 1,000 local and
national food companies. These food
donors are vital to our hunger
relief efforts.
7
E
ducating children in our community
about healthy eating is a priority for
Second Harvest. We partnered with
Universal Orlando and the Universal
Orlando Foundation to bring “Bites,
Camera, Action!” to middle-school
children in Orlando. “Bites, Camera,
Action!” is a mobile nutrition program
with three components that work
together to address hunger in our
community: a mobile pantry, food
truck and nutrition education. Weekly,
children are encouraged and inspired to
make healthier choices by participating
in nutrition activities and a cooking
demonstration, while receiving a
hearty helping of the nutritious and
filling recipe of the week. At the end
of the program, each child receives
a family food bag to take home.
By engaging students in these
activities, we provide a nutritionbased multi-sensory learning
experience, while addressing
barriers to needy students
receiving food.
8
A total of 950 children participated
in nutrition education through “Bites,
Camera, Action!” and over 2,000 food
packs and family food boxes were
distributed to children and families
in need.
In addition to “Bites, Camera,
Action!”, over 700 children and
adults participated in nutrition
education activities through a variety
of other programs including cooking
demonstrations, grocery store tours,
and education sessions for children
and adults.

COMMUNITY KITCHEN
A
t Second Harvest Food Bank, our
mission is to fight hunger in our
community and change lives. One
of the innovative ways we’re doing
this is through the Darden Foundation
Community Kitchen – a 2,000-squarefoot commercial kitchen space designed
as an integral part of a holistic approach
to fighting hunger and poverty. In this
dynamic space, the Food Bank offers:
•A 14-week culinary program focused
on foodservice-based technical,
life and employability skills training
for adults
•In-house full-service catering
with affordable space for events,
meetings and seminars
•Bulk and disaster-relief food
partnerships with state and
community organizations
In addition, we work closely with local
growers and farmers to gather and
transform surplus produce. The donated
product is cooked, flash-frozen and ready
to nourish those in need. We also offer
nutrition classes, cooking classes, and
special events throughout the year such
as our Guest Chef Night series.
When organizations book meetings or
events at Second Harvest, they become
part of our mission to fight hunger in our
community and change lives. Revenue
generated through catering and event
sales is invested directly back into our
Community Kitchen programs, allowing
us to support more Central Floridians
needing food assistance or job training
through our Culinary Training Program.
Our food
philosophy
When it comes to catering, our food
philosophy is simple: fresh, local
whenever possible and simply prepared
to bring out the best flavors. Most
everything we serve is made from
scratch in our Darden Foundation
Community Kitchen – pastries, breads,
pickles, pastas, and even our mayo,
ketchup and mustard.
Menu OPTIONS
We offer a variety of menu selections
to enhance daytime meetings and
events, including:
•Beverage service
•Break enhancements and snacks
•Breakfast
•Buffet and boxed lunches
•Holiday and special events
Catering Availability:
We offer morning, afternoon and early evening
in-house catering for meetings and events

Wine Women &
Shoes 2013
On Saturday, May 18, 2013, Second
Harvest Food Bank held our third annual
Wine Women & Shoes fundraising event
at Ports of Call at SeaWorld, raising over
$85,000. More than 300 Central Florida
women were treated to an exciting
afternoon of scrumptious hors d’oeuvres,
delicious wine, and meet-and-greets
with four of SeaWorld’s special animal
guests. Between sips of wine, attendees
enjoyed shopping at the nine national
and local boutiques, as well as
impressive silent and live auctions.
The grand finale of Wine Women &
Shoes was the amazing fashion show
presented by Saks Fifth Avenue.

Strength’s Taste
of the Nation
Orlando 2012
On Saturday, August 25, 2012, the 23rd
annual Taste of the Nation Orlando
was held at the Orlando World Center
Marriott. Guests sampled culinary
sensations and delicious drinks prepared
by chefs from 37 of Central Florida’s
leading restaurants. Attendees also
enjoyed a silent auction, a 100-bottle
wine raffle and a cook-off judged by
Mayor Buddy Dyer. Taste of the Nation
Orlando raised nearly $250,000 to help
fight hunger in Central Florida. The local
beneficiaries for this foodie event were
Second Harvest Food Bank of Central
Florida, Coalition for the Homeless of
Central Florida and Florida Impact.
Hunger Action
Month 2012
Each September, Americans lend their
voices to the fight against hunger by
participating in Hunger Action Month,
which encourages people to learn
about hunger in their community and
help educate others. In fiscal year
2012/2013, we asked people to “Speak
Out Against Hunger” and the City of
Orlando officially proclaimed September
2013 as Hunger Action Month, lighting
the Lake Eola Fountain orange for one
week. People across the nation dressed
in orange and six local chefs participated
in a SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition
Assistance Program) Challenge. Chef’s
spent only $6.67 each on their meals
for an entire day and shared their
experience with others.
BENEFITS CONNECTION
F
or the last five years, Benefits
Connection has secured over
$72 million in unused SNAP
benefits that are now being used to put
food on the tables of tens of thousands of
Central Floridians in need. The program
is designed to help qualified candidates
overcome the challenges associated
with accessing these dollars, such as
lack of access to a computer or skills
to navigate an online application, lack
of awareness regarding these benefits,
misinformation on eligibility factors,
and language and literacy barriers.
The downturn in the economy and the
closing of local Department of Children
and Families (DCF) offices – resulting in
the loss of “face-to-face” assistance –
have been a challenge for those who have
never had to apply for benefits before.
By offering advice, support and
assistance at convenient locations,
we can extend our reach and better
facilitate the benefit process for working
families, seniors and persons with
disabilities. Our team of specialists
provides one-on-one assistance with the
application, submits support documents
to DCF, completes the interview
required by the program, and
provides SNAP education,
information and referrals to a
network of agencies.

* In June 2009, a Federal Demonstration Project was granted. At the time, it was
one of only two grants in the United States. The program allows our specialists to
perform the final interview for applicants on behalf of DCF, relieving pressure on the
clients and the agency due to increasingly large caseloads. In addition, the project
has resulted in a much higher approval rate for the applications we submit.

CAPITAL
CAMPAIGN
T
he 2012/2013 fiscal year will be
remembered in Second Harvest
Food Bank history as a year of
tremendous generosity and vision.
Having completed a lengthy design
process – and with the caring support
of many philanthropic individuals,
firm and foundations – the Food Bank
reached the milestone of 80 percent of
needed capital funds committed in
May 2012. During the following fiscal
year, construction moved forward on
the new Morgan & Morgan, P.A. Hunger
Relief Center at Second Harvest Food
Bank, which was completed in January
2013. Operations commenced at the
411 Mercy Drive location in midFebruary. The historic transfer of
inventory, equipment and staff from the
Brengle Avenue facility to Mercy Drive
took place with little to no interruption
of the flow of food to the Food Bank’s
550-plus partner feeding programs.
to help get the capital campaign closer
to the finish line. With their help and
that of a generous community, Second
Harvest Food Bank continues to look
forward to being able to complete
the “Building Solutions to Hunger”
capital campaign, which had reached
86 percent of total funds needed by
June, 2013. Finishing the campaign
will allow Second Harvest’s board and
staff to devote 100 percent of its time,
effort, and resources to feeding more
people in need going forward. For more
information or to explore naming/
dedication opportunities, please contact
Greg Higgerson at 407-295-1066 or
[email protected].
The facility was officially dedicated by
John and Ultima Morgan of Morgan
& Morgan, P.A. on March 6, 2013. In a
ceremony attended by more than 600
local contributors and partners, this
visionary couple cut the ribbon to mark
a new era of hunger relief in Central
Florida. In the months that followed,
the Morgans assisted in bringing a
number of new “investors in hope”
