The Saxon Tigers took a 1-0 lead into the break in what was a physical first half where they created the majority of attacking play. The early action did not set the tone for the rest of the half and whilst the Tigers pushed forward, the Pumas defense did well to clear up any danger. The Tigers found their opening on the 26th minute when Ben Bernard‟s shot was fired into the roof of the net to give his side the lead. The Pumas set themselves up with a couple of opportunities to cancel out the goal shortly after, the first of which fell in the 29th minute when Joe Dawley put a powerful pass across the face of the goal, which was not converted. In the 42nd minute the ball broke to Mark Galloway on the edge of the Tigers circle and with a good first touch he created the space to flash a powerful reverse stick strike, which flew narrowly over the top. The effort began five minutes of Pumas pressure as the Tigers repeatedly failed to clear their lines and the intensity of the game crept up. It was perhaps slightly surprising in that case that the first goal, when it came, went to the Saxon Tigers as a bouncing ball into the circle took several small deflections before George At this time the call from the Tigers‟ bench was “push, push, push” and they did exactly that – winning a corner from a free hit around the circle. A Pumas equaliser nearly came in the 57th minute when Will Byas‟ volley four yards out flew over the bar with incredible pace but failing to trouble Diccon Stubbings who had replaced Whitfield in goal at half time. The Tigers missed another penalty corner effort moments later and the Pumas‟ Paul Warwick just could not find the vital final touch in a melee around the Tigers front post. A second goal for the Saxon Tigers sealed the trophy in the 62nd minute. Tom Marshall, the Pumas goalkeeper, had already made a good save from Harry Wilder but in a continuation of targeted teammate. Jane Nockolds, England Hockeys National Officiating Manager was at the tournament and later commented on the officials work: “The NYUPL umpires performed to a very high standard at the England Hockey Futures Cup last week. We are genuinely thrilled with the progress that each and every one of them is making.” Two Umpires, Ben Mills and Tim Whale, who are part of the South Region Young Umpire Action Group attended both the Saxon Tiger Tier 1 JRPC competition and Futures Cup as Umpire Officials . The two were selected to be on the young umpire promise list over the summer which is a fantastic achievement for any young umpire, so well done to you both.
