From the Driver’s Seat
I’d like to sincerely thank everyone who supported me through
a difficult couple months. I heard from current members,
former SAACNW newsletter editors, past presidents and other
former club officers who voiced their strong support of what I
have been doing with the newsletter and events I have coordinated. You, collectively, kept me from quitting.
Thanks especially to webmaster Tim Grubb for taking the time
to get pictures for me from the Ice Cream Cruise. The photo
montage on page 14 is his fine work. We had to buy a
SmartMedia card, but it was worth it.
Thanks to Rick Sattler and Baskin & Robbins for another fine
Ice Cream Cruise. Great to have everyone who brought their
cars out for that mini show. Thanks to my buddy Dave
Lennartz for helping with the set-up.
Sorry we had to cancel the Dyno Day #2, if you people don’t
reserve spots when we announce events then they just cannot
happen. We’ve got to have firm commitments for things like
that, it won’t work to “just show up unscheduled.” If you are
interested in running on the dyno then step up and make a
commitment to do it. Otherwise these kinds of events just are
not going to continue.

August Meeting Minutes
Minutes of the SAAC NW meeting 15 August 2004
Vice President’s Report
Vice President Dan Patching brought the meeting to order at 6:15 P.M. Dan mentioned
that our President Gary Kelley was helping his son John to install a motor in his Mustang at the shop of Mark Pendergrass, his reason for not being present at tonight’s
meeting. Dan talked about Hot August Nights in Reno Nevada, said that it was a great
time. This year they had the truckers parade, over 60 diesel trucks all chromed to the
hilt with lights and horns, quite a sight and sound! Dan mentioned that at some point in
the future we could get enough members together to tour to Hot August Nights as a
club.
Dan asked the club secretary to read the minutes of the July 18th meeting.
Secretary’s Report
Paul Blanchard read the minutes and then asked if there were any additions or corrections to the July meeting minutes as read. There weren’t any, the minutes stand as
read.
A general discussion followed, with Dave Lennartz expressing the opinion that we
need to relax more and not let issues become personal attacks toward one another.
Ann Clack reiterated that we are an organization of volunteers that we depend upon
for the success of our club. Ann mentioned that if a mistake is made, apologize and
move on. Dan Jones made the comment that we need to be less critical and more
supportive of each other for the good of the club. Brian Bogdon made mention of the
need for greater charitable contributions, he would like to see us give to the Shelby
Children’s Foundation.
Ann Clack mentioned that the flyer for the Baskin & Robbins Ice Cream cruise was the
same as last year, if there were any changes that needed to have been made they
should have been expressed at that time. Gayle Gehring said she and Fred were in
Idaho last year and didn’t have the opportunity to preview the flyer before it was published. Dan Patching said that it is the wishes of our current e-board that all items that
carry the club logo be previewed before they are published to lessen the possibility of
being controversial.
Thanks to Rick Sattler and Baskin & Robbins for hosting us!

Maryhill Loops Car Show and Hill Climb Info
Sat. 10/9/2004 (Car Show)
and Sun. 10/10/2004 (Hill Climb)
August Meeting Minutes -cont. from pg.3
Treasurer’s Report
Ann Clack gave the report, gave the beginning and ending balance. Ann gave us a
listing of our expenses as well as income. Our balance is reconciled with the August
Bank Statement.
Hello SAAC Northwest enthusiasts,
Just a F.Y.I. Maryhill Loops Cars Show and Hill Climb is fast approaching.
Newsletter Editor
Brent was concerned as to whether or not he should stay on as editor, whether he had
the confidence of the e-board and if he would be able to continue as editor without
micro-management.
Dan Patching said that he would be willing to do whatever is necessary to ensure that
Brent stays as newsletter editor. Bob Parker also commented that he appreciated all of
the work and effort that Brent has put in on behalf of the club, felt that he had done a
good job as newsletter editor.
New member Jack Greene expressed his appreciation to Brent for the research that
he did on his car that was featured in this month’s newsletter.
SAAC NW Webmaster
Tim Grubb said that he is working on our home page making changes as required at
the first of each week. Tim asked about the membership form, it seems to have been
lost, Ann said that she had been looking for the name and address of a couple of
members. She has the information needed for the members so that they will receive
their newsletters, this is something that will need further work.
MHRC Report
Paul Blanchard as alternate rep gave the report for Ray Clack while he was on vacation and unable to attend the meeting. A motion was made to approve the new MHRC
by-law changes as a club take back, motion seconded, vote taken motion passed. Big
Don Van Dinter, Portland Roadster Show Chairman received a contract for his services
voted by the reps and accepted unanimously. The Portland Roadster Show Budget
was approved by vote of the member club reps.
The MHRC summer picnic will be held at Council member Bob Paeth’s place on the
19th of September 1 P.M. to 7 P.M. at Shadow Brook Mobile Court in Clackamas. The
Council will provide the burgers and hot dogs and pop, members are asked to bring in
salad and desert. All members and their families are welcome.

Dates: Saturday, Oct. 9th (car show) and Sunday, Oct. 10th (hill climb race).
We are all anticipating these dates will bring us warm "Indian Summer" weather where we
can drive our club cars to the event without spray, crud and grime. There's much "Powered By
Ford" to cheer for blasting through the Hillclimb traps. So, here's what you need to do if you
are interested.
#1. Call us or Email us at (503) 657-5595 or [email protected] We have the official
entry form and can FAX it to you.
#2. Have your pre-registration and $12.00 per car submitted to Goldendale Motorsports
Association by October 1st, 2004. You can enter your car for the show the day you drive in (10/
9/04) unannounced for a higher price ($15.00). If the organizers know in advance what cars are
committed to show up they can adjust awards accordingly.
#3. The Open Event Car Show is popular ballot amongst registered participants Sat. Oct. 9,
10 AM - 4 PM. Awards at 3:30 PM. The optional Buffet Dinner @ $15.00 per person starts @
4:00 PM.
#4. The next day Oct. 10th, is hill climb race day. Many of us will be laying over on Saturday night at Goldendale, WA or Biggs, OR motels so we can take in the race.
#5. Plan on side excursions like a wine tasting event on Saturday evening and checking out
the art and Native American relics any time during the two days at Marryhill Museum. There's
extra fees for these of course.
Thanks for your attention,

August Meeting Minutes -cont. from pg.4
Fred Gehring made reference to an e-mail message that he had received from a link
from the MHRC, his virus scan wouldn’t allow it to be opened. Members are encouraged to not open any questionable e-mails, just erase them and be sure to keep your
anti-virus software up to date.
National SAAC Rep
Fred Gehring talked about the recent unveiling of a prototype of the new Shelby GR-1
sports car at the Pebble Beach Councours. Fred commented on a program on the
Speed Channel called Behind the Headlights, it was a real good presentation of
Shelby American History. Dan Gurney was interviewed a lot as well as several other
Shelby American employees of the era. Fred said that he is still investigating the
procedure necessary to acquire the program on tape or CD.
Fred said that he hasn’t received any new correspondence from SAAC National.
Track Steward’s Report
2004 Track Day #2 - Thursday Sept. 9
Preliminary Report
According to unofficial sources we had good turnout
at the recent Track Day #2. There were somewhere between 30 and 45 cars. The novice group was well
looked after by more experienced drivers/riders. Only
a couple incidents with fluids on the track which
caused a continuation of the run groups through
lunch to make up for the approx. 30 min. lost during
clean up. Thanks to all track workers and organizers.
12
Brent Passmore said that he had passed out over 800 flyers was still looking for
participants to send in their application. Brent said that an invitation had been extended to Allen Grant, Allen said that he may attend for a test and tune to get ready
for the Mary Hill, hill climb. Allen said that he plans on taking it all this year!
Brian Bogdon said that he has taken flyers to Mustang events, tours and cruise-ins to
help get the word out. Bob Parker told of his participation at an Alpha Club Track Day,
it went real smooth, they are a lot more lenient as far as clothing requirements and
tech inspections are concerned. A general discussion followed with regard to track
day expenses and dates, should we have two dates instead of three? Brian mentioned that Pro Drive has the track on Fridays, from now on we will be eligible for
weekdays only.
Brian mentioned that he had talked with the WASAAC members about the possibility
of their attendance at our track days as well as possibly having Pete Brock and Allen
Grant come to one of our track days.
Old Business
Ann Clack said that Sandy Bauer from the Portland Historics at PIR wanted some
feedback about the Car Corral being held in the infield. She wanted to know if people
were for the new arrangement or if there was a need for improvement. All members
who had participated said that it was difficult to enter and exit the corral by crossing

the track, and many participants commented that the parade laps were to slow.
Brent Soo Hoo had some posters from the Ice Cream Cruise available to give away,
took the opportunity to thank Dave Lennartz for all of his help with set up for the
Cruise.
HURRY! MHMF needs your registration soon!
Register before September 20th
New Business
Brent Soo Hoo said he would probably cancel the Dyno Day for the 28th of August due
to a lack of interest.
Ann Clack said that she had received an email from a “Mad Max” inviting us to participate in a road rally, an all out event similar to what they have in Europe. Ann said that
Mt. Hood Mustang and Fords has extended an invitation to our club to attend a poker
rally called “A River Runs Through It” on Sunday the 26th of September. Participants
are to meet at 12:00 Noon at Lewis and Clark State Park off of I-84 near Troutdale, the
cost is $10.00/car. It is a 100 mile rally, with time/distance, rally questions and poker
hand to determine the winner. Pre-registration is required before September 20th, there
will be no same day registration, it will take about 3 hours to complete the rally.
Dan Patching said that the Tom Jones Barbecue after the Redmond High Desert Swap
Meet was still on, all participants who wish to attend can follow Dan out to his place
after the Swap Meet.
Brian Bogdon commented on the National Sunni Meet that he attended, a national
Sunbeam meet. Among the cars that were in attendance were Sunbeam Tigers, Brian
and Lisa trailered their Tiger to the event thanks to the loan of the enclosed trailer from
Dave Lennartz. Brian and Lisa had a great time, Brian brought a disc for us to look at,
passed out copies for several enthusiasts to take home and enjoy. Brian talked about
going to Kirkham body shop in Utah, they make the bodies for Cobra replicas as
manufactured by Shelby American as well as rollers that Kirkham sells on their own.
Fred Gehring took a phone call from Gary Kelley thanking Dan Patching for chairing
tonight’s meeting, said that they got the engine installed and running in John’s Mustang.
Dan Jones talked about a Cruise-In coming up soon at the park in Lake Oswego, Dan
will have a report at next months meeting.

Shelby introduces the new GR-1
PEBBLE BEACH, CA, August 13, 2004 - Carroll Shelby is following up the codename
“Daisy” award winning concept show car with this new model called theFord Shelby GR-1.
The GR stands for Group Racing. From the official Ford press release, “Racing inspired and
wholly modern in design, the Ford Shelby GR-1 builds on the success of the Ford Shelby
Cobra (“Daisy”) concept--the 2004 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) “Best
in Show” winner--and reinforces Ford’s on-going commitment to performance excellence.
“The Ford Shelby Cobra concept was a small step in our plans for the Ford GT supercar
architecture and our relationship with Carroll Shelby,” says J Mays, Ford Motor Company
group vice president of Global Design. “And the Ford Shelby GR-1 is a giant leap toward the
future.” Auto Week (8/13) wrotethe same day, “Built on the Shelby Cobra concept’s chassis,
the GR-1 went from paper to Pebble Beach in six months. This example is crafted in fiberglass, though aluminum or composite bodywork would likely be used in any production
version. Beneath the soul-stealing exterior, which Ford design vice president J Mays calls,
“one of the nicest we’ve done in the last five or six years,” the Cobra concept’s aluminum
spaceframe remains virtually unchanged.
What I see here is
some smart thinking
on Ford’s part, to make
not one but potentially
THREE supercars
based on the Ford GT
basic structure and
underpinnings. Think
of all the tooling that
could be leveraged to
make similar butt
different supercars!
Saving on tooling
investments will mean
the prices can be more
competitive.
Auto Week (8/13) continues, “Like the Cobra, the GR-1 shares its suspension, rear suspension
mounts, extruded aluminum chassis rails, rack and pinion steering gear, steering column and
four-piston Brembo brakes with the Ford GT. We know from experience that the GT’s underpinnings provide world-class ride and handling, and should easily cope with the GR-1’s extra
power. The 6.4-liter V10, which might not survive if production goes ahead, began its life in
the 427 sedan concept shown at Detroit in 2003. The engine makes 605-hp at 6750 rpm and
501 lb.-ft. at 5500, the same output Ford boasted for the Cobra and enough to run from 0 to 60
mph in less than 4 seconds. The six-speed transaxle (also lifted from the GT), wheelbase, and
track are also unchanged from the roadster, as it, according to Mays, the 52-48 (front/rear)
weight distribution. The car rides on the same 275/40 R18 front, 345/35 R19 rear tires, with
the rubber mounted on unique, 12-spoke alloys rather than the Cobra’s seven-spokers.”
This car looks like a cross between a Ford GT and a vintage Cobra Daytona Coupe. Since
there are so many crossover parts between the three cars it seems like Ford could actually
build all three as production vehicles if they really want to. The question that everyone is
asking is WILL THEY BUILD IT??? Auto Week (8/13) speculates that “With the GT unlikely
to continue past the 2007 model year (depending on who you ask, Ford still has not decided
when it will cease building the car), would not that be the logical, ideal time to launch a
production GR-1?” Perhaps we will see all three supercars produced in series. Can’t wait!
