 How did the Shoshone Indians adapt to their environment in order to
survive?

customs, and crafts and weapons of the Shoshone Indians.
BACKGROUND & LANGUAGE
 The Shoshone Indians were located in the Great Basin such as the west
region
 “ Shoshone “ means Valley Dwellers
 They spoke Shoshone language.

LIVE?
 Lived in cooler mountain areas
during summer
 Traveled in groups of 2-20
 Lived on the move
 Lived in what is now known as,
California, Oregon, Nevada, Idaho,
Utah and Wyoming

SHELTER?

buffalo, rabbits, prairie
dogs, root of camos
 Things gathered
roots, seeds, berries,
grasshoppers,
sunflower seeds, wild
plants , nuts, insects,
pine nuts , grasses ,
flour, trout, dried food
for the winter, and
some other things.
A family of four need
around one thousand
pine nuts a year!
FAMILY LIFE OF THE SHOSHONE
INDIANS
The family life of the Shoshone Indians. The chores for the Shoshone Indian
girls is that they did chores made the teepee and cleaned and took care of their
home. The boys were supposed to hunt and get food for the tribe. When babies
were born they were pasted in clay to protect there skin from sun.

MEN -BREECH CLOTHES MADE FROM MILK WEED PLANTS
WOMEN- APRONS FOR THE WINTER, WARM ROBES OUT OF RABBITS AND OTHER
FURS, HATS, SKIRTS
BOYS AND GIRLS- RABBIT SKIN BLANKETS, POLES, BUFFALO SKINS, BEADED
CLOTHING FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS, BAGS, WOVEN GRASSES AND SOFT TREE BARK
TO MAKE SKIRTS, ANIMAL HIDES, CAPES FROM RABBIT SKINS, DRESSES AND PANTS
FROM CLOTH WOVEN FROM GRASSES.
TRADITIONS AND CUSTOMS
Some Shoshone Indians traditions are the Sun Dance, the Round Dance, and
Ghost Dance. They played games and sang songs whiled they danced and had a
barbecue. Usually traditions lasted for 3 to 4 days, but some traditions can last
for over two to three weeks.
SHOSHONE CRAFTS AND WEAPONS
 Women made leather bags called parfleches
 Used materials from resources around them
 Used mineral paints to decorate the parfleches
 Western & northern Shoshone were different because of lacking water
and wood supplies
 Hunters use bow and arrows
 Buffalo hide shield
 Fishermen use spear traps
ANSWER TO THE ESSENTIAL
QUESTION:
They had to use all the things around there tribe.
They lived in wickiups for their shelter. They had to
use willow tree branches for their shelter. They also
had to use rabbit skin for their blankets. The
Shoshone tribe had to keep moving to different
places because of the climate change. Shoshonis had
to speak Shoshone language so they could
communicate with each other in the tribe.
