Old log finds new home at
Holt & Balcom Logging Camp
(L-R) Jon Marsh, Jeff Radish, Bob Brown and Bruce
Beno are all smiles as the historic log rests comfortably in its new
home at the Holt & Balcom Logging Camp Museum in Lakewood.
A 130 year old log rescued from Reservoir Pond
in Townsend is now safely ensconced in its new home at
the Holt & Balcom Logging Camp Museum in Lakewood.
Donated by Debbie and Kyle Roeser of Green Bay, the log
has a U and a D clearly marked in two places, identifying it
as an original log from the [Uri] Balcom and [Devillo] Holt
Lumber Company. The log was taken down with a twoman crosscut saw, indicating it was cut after 1880 when
that tool was introduced to the logging industry. It was
most likely cut prior to 1887 when Holt bought out Balcom
and use of this blaze (stamp) was discontinued.
“When I called Jeff Radish, owner of Radish
Crane Company, Townsend, he quickly agreed to
transport and position the log,” said Camp Curator
Kathleen Marsh. “We are so grateful to Jeff for donating his
services. He expertly loaded the log, hauled it out to the
Museum, and carefully inched it into place.”
Marsh added: “What is now our oldest artifact sits
on a stand built by one of our most faithful volunteers,
Bruce Beno. Bruce, my husband Jon, and Camp Manager
Bob Brown assisted in positioning the log. Bob
immediately took charge of the preservation process.”
Former Camp Manager Norb Langer is also
doing research on the log itself. He has asked Forest
Service personnel in the Lakewood office to verify the
species and determine the age of the tree when it was cut.
“We know it will be of great interest to future visitors,
especially the hundreds of area fourth graders who tour
the Museum each spring as part of their study of
Wisconsin history,” Norb said. “This is truly a precious and
rare relic of Nineteenth Century northwoods history, and it
is exciting for us to be able to add it to our collection."
The first large group to view the log will be
members of the Wisconsin Woodlands Association. Their
visit on September 19 is part of an optional tour offered to
those attending the WWA Convention at the Potawatomi
Casino and Hotel in Carter. Later that evening the Museum
is also providing the after-dinner entertainment, “Letters
from the Logging Camp.” The play is an original
dramatization written by Kathleen Marie Marsh. Narrated
by Shirley Ashbeck, it chronicles four years (1892-95) in
the lives of Holt Lumber Company owner W.A. Holt and his
wife Lucy (Kathleen Marsh) as well as fictitious characters
Foreman Harold Hooker and his wife Henrietta (Beth
Hartman), and Camp Cook Henry Hauser and his wife
Hannah (Cindy Jonet).
The final Holt & Balcom Logging Camp Museum
event of 2014 is the third annual Red Light Saloon to be
held October 4 at the Townsend Town Hall at 2:00 and 7:00
p.m. This year’s show, “The Homesteader’s Fraulein”,
pays tribute to the hardy immigrants who settled in
northern Oconto County during the final decade of the
19th Century.
Special Note: Tours of the camp are offered
summer Saturdays from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The
Museum, which is located one and a half miles east of
Lakewood on Highway F, is closed for the season, but
private tours can be arranged by calling Bob Brown (715276-3505) or Kathleen Marsh (715-276-6515).

Learning in Retirement classes
start Sept. 15 at Nicolet College
Northwoods retirees seeking just-for-the-fun-of-it
learning opportunities and the chance to make new friends
are encouraged to attend any of the upcoming offerings in
the Learning in Retirement program at Nicolet College.
Fall Session classes start Monday, September 15
and include more than 40 topics. These include the everpopular Ced Vig Nature Series, travelogues to the high
Arctic and South Africa, Return to Pearl Harbor,
Wisconsin’s Changing Climate, a Fall Hike at Treehaven,
along with many others.
The upcoming session will also include tours of
many local businesses. These include Trig’s Smokehouse,
WXPR, George W. Brown Jr. Ojibwe Museum and Cultural
Center, WJFW Ch. 12, and the Packaging Corporation of
America Mill.
“Any of these offerings is a great way for active
retirees to learn new things and meet new people,” said
Nancy Brissee, Nicolet LIR community representative.
“The whole point is to have fun and stay active and every
class offers the opportunity to do exactly that.”
Classes will be held throughout the Northwoods
in Rhinelander, Tomahawk, Crandon, Three Lakes and
Wabeno. Some classes will meet just once while others are
held once a week over the course of months.
About 300 Northwoods retirees belong to the
organization.
The LIR membership is $35. Members can take as
many or as few classes as they desire. There are no tests or
grades in any class - only learning just for the fun of it. For
more information about the LIR or a complete class list, visit
nicoletcollege.edu and type Learning in Retirement in the
search box. Interested individuals can also contact the
Nicolet College Learning in Retirement Office at (715) 3654491 or 1-800-544-3039, ext. 4491: TDD 711 or 1-800-9473529.

The weekend's big winner was the #99 Monster Energy
Ford PRO 4 driven by Kyle LeDuc. Leading both land rush starts into
Crandon's legendary Forest County Potowatomi Turn One (top), the
California veteran pounded his way through the race's PRO 2 field
and was first to the checkered flag for the 5th Annual Amsoil
Challenge Cup. The exuberant driver not only won a record $45,000
win, but also will have his name forever engraved in the beautiful

earning a special place in history. Bolstered by the largest single race purse in Midwest
short-course racing and a weekend crowd that reached record-setting levels on Sunday,
the 2014 Off-Road World Championships at Crandon International Raceway will reinforce
the event’s legendary status even further.
With a record 2,000 camping spots pre-sold and thousands more spectators
filing through the tracks entrances for three days of racing, the 400 acre Crandon
International Raceways once again lived up to it's reputation as the "Big House." And while
rain on Saturday lowered the overall weekend attendance slightly from previous years,
Sunday's epic day of PRO class racing and the 5th Annual Amsoil Challenge Cup finale
drew a Crandon single-day record crowd of just over 20,000 enthusiastic fans.
For those that missed being there, this Saturday, Sept. 6, the NBC Sports Network
is airing the final PRO races of the year in all their glory starting at 3:30 p.m. EDT. At 5 p.m.
EDT, the 5th annual Amsoil Challenge Cup race will be run in its entirety.
After the traditional Labor Day weekend parade in downtown Crandon, the rains
came on Friday night, and continued through Saturday. While the 1.5-mile dirt track was a
muddy mess, astonishingly the hearty crowds either enjoyed hanging by their campfires
or just watching dirt being moved from spectator hill. Thanks to lots of hard work and the
track’s rather effective drainage system, by the afternoon there was just enough surface to
slog through several MORR classes and allow some racers to claim their classes’ Crandon
World Championship title. By the end of the day the track surface came-in just enough to
provide an incredible Super Buggy race, which was won by west coast competitor Kevin
McCullough.
By weekend’s end the racers managed to claim all 14 of Crandon International’s
“World Champion” crowns, including two for the youngsters via the highly popular running
of the Midwest-bases Short Course Karts and west coast-based Modified Karts.
With the loss of track time, all TORC Pro racing was scheduled for Sunday, with
double points racing in PRO 2WD and PRO 4x4. The PRO Lights racers would run for two
separate rounds, while all of the MORR Sportsmen would round out a packed schedule
leading up to the all-important Amsoil Challenge Cup finale.
The early proceedings saw Chad Hord take the PRO 2 class win, but losing the
2014 championship to CJ Greaves. The young Greaves, however, would claim the top-ofthe-box spot in the first PRO Light race, a preview of things to come. The biggest battle
came in the 2014 TORC PRO 4 finale, with Kyle LeDuc, Johnny Greaves and class
newcomer CJ Greaves banging doors all the way until LeDuc took a well-earned victory.
The performance gave Johnny Greaves the 2014 championship; while talented son CJ
became the first driver in short course history to podium in each of the sport’s top three
categories!
The weekend finale saw TORC’s PRO 2WD and PRO 4x4 classes let loose for the
5th Annual Amsoil Cup Challenge race. In a new Midwest off-road motorsports record, the
field was racing for a payday of $45,000 in cash plus additional prizes from MasterCraft
Safety and Lincoln Welders from a total purse of just over $56,000.

It was one year ago this weekend that the family scored their biggest victory yet
as C.J. crossed the Crandon finish line just ahead of his father to claim the Amsoil Cup
Challenge – the richest payday in the sport. The race pitted TORC’s PRO 2WD and PRO
4x4 on the track at the same time after receiving staggered starts.
Not surprisingly, the land rush-style starts that are Crandon’s trademark were
thrilling for the crowd and the drivers in both classes. With Chad Hord and Kyle LeDuc
getting the hole shots, the race was shaping up well until a big crash by PRO 4’s Mark
Kvamme going into the track’s Polaris RZR “Gravel Pit” corner forced a red flag stoppage.
It took rescue and medical crews awhile to extract the moderately injured driver, with all
the trucks stopped in formation.
Insuring another shot at a great race, the two classes were realigned for a
second land rush starts for both classes, with Hord and LeDuc again on point coming into
a packed Crandon infield. While some had thought Hord’s lead insurmountable, there
was no denying a flying LeDuc, who was hounded by both Greaves Motorsports Monster
Energy Toyotas. The PRO 4s crushed their way through all the PRO 2s except for one – the
Polaris/Monster Energy sponsored truck of RJ Anderson.
In the end, CJ Greaves suffered a late-race DNF, handing a welcome third place
podium finish to an elated Anderson. Johnny Greaves took the runner-up spot as Kyle
LeDuc’s flying Ford was untouchable.
Holding a check for $45,000, a specially made gold plated “Top Gun” Henry Rifle
commissioned by Crandon International Raceway and the huge Amsoil Challenge Cup
trophy, young LeDuc had come east and made the ultimate statement. He proved once
again how powerful the idea of one all-out “World Championship” race at Crandon pitting
the best versus the best continues to be as the iconic track heads towards its 50th
Anniversary celebration in 2019.
I
t was also the culmination of a 2014 Crandon sweep by Monster Energy
company, a staunch supporter of short course off-road racing. fans, the good folks at
Monster Energy also set up two of their huge, state-of-the-art hospitality stages to
entertain the Crandon International crowds and make sure they too were having a
"Monster" of a weekend at Crandon.
"This race weekend was a tough one in many ways, but without a doubt we have
the best fans in the world," explained Crandon President Cliff Flannery. "The best part is
that racers in all classes put on a show that many of us won't forget. Our management
team has already met to discuss making improvements for 2015 so we can better
accommodate our racers, fans and sponsors for next year and beyond."

Deer Advisory Cont. from pg. 1
Council meetings will develop
recommendations to the DNR regarding deer population
objectives in their respective county, antlerless quotas,
and season structure options. Through their
participation, CDAC members and meeting participants
will be given a direct stake in managing Wisconsin’s deer
herd.
Three meetings will be held this fall, as will
happen every three years, to develop deer herd
population objective recommendations to the
department. Councils will meet each spring to develop
antlerless deer harvest quotas for deer hunting seasons
and consider various strategies to meet population
objectives.
Local department staff will be on hand to
present information and answer any questions and
discuss possible strategies for managing the local deer
herd.
Anyone interested in making a statement at the
meeting must pre-register by contacting Alan Harrison,
Forest County CDAC chair at 715-473-3921. In order to
accommodate all who wish to speak, statements will be
limited to three minutes.
Those unable to attend a local meeting will be
able to view meeting agendas and minutes on the
department’s website.
Deer hunters and those interested in helping
manage their local deer herd are encouraged to check
out the frequently asked questions document featured
on the department’s CDAC page for any questions
regarding councils. To view a more general FAQ page,

DEATH NOTICES
Allen Roberts Johnson, born
January 4, 1924, son of the late James
Henry and Dorla Elizabeth (Roberts)
Johnson, passed away peacefully
with his family present on September
4, 2014, at AGI Healthcare (Crandon
Nursing Home) at the age of 90.
Allen is survived by his beloved wife of
68 years, Louise (Montgomery) of
Crandon; four children, Dorla (Melvin)
Donek of Crandon, Rebecca (Ken) Eades of Eagle River,
Jeffrey of Loveland, CO, and Leck of Crandon; eight
grandchildren, Sharla (Kelly) Kitchmaster of Laona, Mel
(Nancy) Donek of Argonne, Jerry (Debbie) Johnson of
Bemidji, MN, Robert (Chloe) Eades of Bismarck, ND, Jamie
(Michael) Karpinski of Eagle River, Ryan Johnson, Shannon
Wagoner, Jeffrey Johnson, Jr. of Longmont, CO; and 17 great
grandchildren, Kayla, Jena, Kody, and Jade Kitchmster of
Laona, Jessica and Ty Donek of Argonne, Callie, Tessa,
Serena, and Lydia Johnson of Bemidji, MN, Mariah and Zoey
Karpinski of Eagle River, Ben and Brian Eades and Megan
Kellmer of Eagle River, Sawyer Eades of Bismarck, ND, and
Isaaic, Curtis, and Vanessa Johnson of Longmont, CO. Allen
is also survived by two sisters, Dorla Pitts of Crandon, and
Jean Waalkens of Argonne; and brother, Jack of Crandon.
Preceding him in death besides his parents, James and
Dorla, were two children, Lonah Diane Johnson and Robert
Allen Johnson. Also preceding him in death were two
brothers, James and Lloyd; 6 sisters, Lorraine Zelechowski,
Phyliss Pitts, Nancy Johnson, Joyce Garbarek, Helen Mercer
and Alice Russell; numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-inlaw, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Allen was born in his home town in Argonne, WI, where he
grew up , attending Argonne grade school through the 7th
grade. He quit school to go to work with his father, James, in
woods work and logging until he joined the Navy at age 19.
He served in the navy from Nov. 7, 1943, through April 10th of
1946, with honorable discharge. His first 8 months in service
were spent in boot camp and schooling for motor machinist.
Allen said his older brother Jimmy had inspired him to go into
the service, as he (his brother) was in aviation in Air Force. He
was on board a ship named LCI772R. He was a Motor
Machinist Mate 3rd Class and served in the engine room
unless under marshal orders, of which he was many times firing 20mm anti-aircraft guns. He said he must have fired
thousands of rounds during those times he fought in World
War II. He spent 20 months (mostly aboard ship) in Honolulu
and the Gulf of Leyte of the Philippine Islands, then fought in
the two invasions in the Northwest Pacific in the Iwo Jima
battle, where the Japanese were defeated. He said the battle
in Okinawa lasted over three months, and was fought from
the ship from the east side at Buckner Bay. He said they also
spent time on the west side of the Pacific Ocean. Allen said
the ship was called LCI772 R (as the R meant it was also a
ship that fired rockets). He said he never regretted serving
his beloved United States of America. Allen married
Margaret Louise Montgomery (daughter of John and Delilah
Montgomery) June 6, 1946. They lived in Milwaukee, WI,
where Allen attended Milwaukee School of Engineering and
worked in welding. They later lived in Kentucky, and in
Nashville, WI, then moved to their home in Crandon in 1956.
Together they had 6 children. Allen had become a roofer and
had his own Crandon Lumber Supply Roofing and Siding
business for many years . He retired at age 72 in 1996. His
hobbies were playing guitar, fishing, hunting and spending
time with his family. Allen loved the Lord, his family, working
in his roofing business, and serving his country. He will be
sadly missed by all.

Wabeno Library receives a personal
remembrance of a Vietnam Vet and father
On a summer trip back to the Wabeno area where
her dad was from, and where she had lived for some years
as a child, Julie K. Weber-Torres visited the Wabeno Public
Library to donate two signed copies of her remembrance of
her father, Julius (Jerry) D. Weber:
“My Dad was truly my hero, though he struggled
with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, throughout the rest of
his life upon returning home from the war.” He served in the
U.S. Army as a Light Equipment Engineer assigned to the
557th Engineer Company, helping to build the Thunder
Road, “But that didn’t nearly describe what he did,” related
his daughter: in addition to his “normal” duties of
construction under enemy fire, he had to see, and haul the
bodies of his fallen brothers off of the fields and the sides of
the roads….he surmounted extremely adverse conditions
and served with distinction. Among his medals were the
Army Commendation Medal, The National Defense Service
Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal, 2 Bronze Stars, and a
Silver Star.”
Weber-Torres, in her personal remembrance of her
dad, speaks of his struggles with alcoholism that drove a rift
in their family, and she now spends many hours speaking
with Veterans groups and service organizations, in her
home state of Florida, and elsewhere. She presented the
library with two copies of the book in remembrance and
thanks to the many veterans of the area and the country.
The signed copies are available to be checked out, and in
her inscription, she thanks our local veterans for their
service.
She hopes to add many slides that her father took
during his war years in Vietnam, on her website which she
has created for the book: www.adaughtershero.com. She
goes on, in her afterword: “ ‘A Daughter’s Hero’ was written
to raise awareness about the long lasting effects of and
shares the unconditional love and compassion between a
daughter and father.”
In addition to adding this special item to the
collection, the Wabeno Public Library has ordered a copy of
the film, “Still the Drums,” an award-winning documentary
which chronicles the lives of four friends in Vietnam
(www.stillthedrums.com). A synopsis of the film is as
follows:
M.I.A. (missing in action), in Vietnam, for thirtynine years, the remains of Lt. Jack E. Buchannon, U.S.M.C.,
are found and identified. He is brought home and
posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor and buried as a
fallen hero.
His three childhood best friends, also ex-marines
and Vietnam veterans, have been meeting every year on
their missing buddy's birthday, but this time it's different, it's
immediately after attending his funeral. They plan to raise a
final toast, look back on their lives, their friendship and their
service to country, but some secrets have been kept.
“ We are honored to have received the generous
donation of Julie Weber-Torres' book, and we are pleased to
add to our collection materials that are dedicated to telling
the story of our Vietnam Vets,” spoke director Carol Lee
Saffioti-Hughes.
The Library invited Julie Weber-Torres to speak to
the public when she makes a return visit to this area, which
she hopes will be this spring. For more information, to
check out the book, or be on the reserve list for both the
book and the the film, contact the Wabeno Public Library at
715-473-4131.

The Townsend Flowage Association’s First Annual Golf Outing was held at the
McCauslin Golf Course in Lakewood on August 26. The event was hosted by Dawn
Herlache and Renee Kosch, co-owners of Birch Hills Resort/My Bar in Townsend.
Fourteen teams teed off in what started out as no-so-great weather that turned into
a beautiful day. Golfers thoroughly enjoyed the outing, returning to My Bar for socializing
and a delicious broasted chicken dinner catered by Hillcrest Lodge, located right next door
to the Birch Hills Resort.
A bucket raffle was a highlight of the day as lucky winners walked away with terrific
prizes, most of them donated by TFA members. The 50/50 drawing winner, Kevin Osadjan
from Pickerel Lake, donated his share ($277) of the raffle back to the TFA.
Association President Dan Coopman and TFA members in attendance were all
smiles as a total of $1195 was raised and donated to the organization for the betterment of
the Townsend Flowage.
WANTED TO BUY: Rifles,
shotguns, handguns and
misc. ammo. Call 715-8891266.

Happy birthday!
It's easy to hurt your back when you lift, reach
or overdo activities, especially if your muscles are
weak. Fortunately, we know a lot about relieving most
back pain.
Typically, low back pain will ease up in a few
days or weeks. Rest no more than 1 or 2 days and then
stay moderately active. It's a myth that you need to rest for
a long time (unless your health care provider tells you to
because of a serious condition, such as loss of bowel or
bladder control or fever).
Use ice and non-prescription pain relievers to
reduce inflammation. Treatment may involve easy
stretching and strengthening exercises or physical
therapy.
These back-friendly habits can help reduce
strain and everyday backache:
• Maintain good posture, especially while sitting.
No slouching.
• Sit less. Get up and move about frequently.
• Do low-impact cardio exercise to improve
circulation and strength.
• Use an exercise ball to help strengthen your
core.
• Lose excess weight, especially abdominal fat.
• Let your strong leg muscles power the effort of
lifting.
See your provider if you have persistent back
pain. Discuss lifestyle changes and exercise needs - and
find relief.

Learning in Retirement classes start Sept. 15
at Nicolet College
Northwoods retirees seeking just-for-the-fun-of-it learning opportunities and the
chance to make new friends are encouraged to attend any of the upcoming offerings in the
Learning in Retirement program at Nicolet College.
Fall Session classes start Monday, September 15 and include more than 40 topics.
These include the ever-popular Ced Vig Nature Series, travelogues to the high Arctic and
South Africa, Return to Pearl Harbor, Wisconsin’s Changing Climate, a Fall Hike at
Treehaven, along with many others.
The upcoming session will also include tours of many local businesses. These
include Trig’s Smokehouse, WXPR, George W. Brown Jr. Ojibwe Museum and Cultural
Center, WJFW Ch. 12, and the Packaging Corporation of America Mill.
“Any of these offerings is a great way for active retirees to learn new things and
meet new people,” said Nancy Brissee, Nicolet LIR community representative. “The whole
point is to have fun and stay active and every class offers the opportunity to do exactly that.”
Classes will be held throughout the Northwoods in Rhinelander, Tomahawk,
Crandon, Three Lakes and Wabeno. Some classes will meet just once while others are held
once a week over the course of months.
About 300 Northwoods retirees belong to the organization.
The LIR membership is $35. Members can take as many or as few classes as they
desire. There are no tests or grades in any class - only learning just for the fun of it. For more
information about the LIR or a complete class list, visit nicoletcollege.edu and type
Learning in Retirement in the search box. Interested individuals can also contact the Nicolet
College Learning in Retirement Office at (715) 365-4491 or 1-800-544-3039, ext. 4491: TDD

Free events featured in Nicolet College
Creative Arts and Tech Talk Series
Ann Eshelman’s volunteer work with African wildlife will be featured at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday,
Sept. 23, in the Nicolet College Theatre. Admission is free.
African wildlife, the exquisite woodcuts and prints of Gene Mecikalski, and free
office software you can carry on a flash drive are all topics of free public events that will
take place at Nicolet College in coming weeks.
African Wildlife Presentation
World traveler Ann Eshelman will return to the Nicolet College Theatre stage to present
Lending a Hand to Africa’s Wildlife at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 23.
Energized by her global volunteer work last year tending to Cambodian
elephants, Ann most recently traveled to Africa to continue working with wildlife. During
her visit to Limpopo Province, South Africa, and then to the Central Kalahari Game
Preserve, Botswana, Ann met people from all over the world committed to the well-being
and perpetuation of Africa's wildlife. Share Ann’s deep appreciation of Africa, the people,
and the animals as she describes her adventures including a wildebeest hunt (and the
subsequent meal), gathering edible wild vegetation with Bushmen, and outmaneuvering a baby rhino.
Exquisite Engravings, Lithography, and Woodcuts Art Exhibit
A printmaker since the 1950s, Gene Mecikalski has works in the permanent
collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Library of Congress,
and Pennsylvania State University. Over the years this Mequon native has won numerous
awards for lithography, woodcuts and engravings. The exhibit opens Sept. 19 and runs
through Oct. 11. The Gallery, located in the Learning Resources Center, is open 8 a.m. to
8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Tech Talk - Carry Your Office in Your Pocket
Learn how to store portable - and free - applications on a USB memory stick
that’s small enough to carry in your pocket. Applications covered will range from
graphics apps to games to complete office software packages. Presentation will take
place Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 6 p.m. in Learning Resources Center room 205.

immaculate shape for the event.
