The Greek conqueror Alexander
the Great went to the sages of
Israel to request the secret of life.
Their answer was simple and to
the point. Imagine that every
moment you live is your last. It is a
profound insight. Every moment is
holy because every moment can
be made special to be cherished
and sanctified.

There is a popular saying “the past is history; the future
is a mystery.” Today is a gift, that is why it is called the
present. That is what the sages of Israel taught
Alexander the Great. Hold onto every moment. Don’t
miss that child's first step, the moment the child takes off
on a bicycle, the first hit at the baseball game, their first
Hebrew word, or that first moment of uttering the words
“Shema Yisrael**.”. It is there. and then it is gone.
Nothing lasts forever. We must fight to remain balanced
and relaxed as time passes. As we age, we try to
maintain dignity and grow in wisdom, even as our
physical selves change and age. In the process we must
prepare another generation for its responsibility. The
wonderful Rabbi Avi Weiss wrote, "the greatest test of
success can be seen in how well we foster transition of
responsibility and control to the next generation.” It is the
paradoxical teaching to hold with open arms. We must
teach and prepare a new generation, and let them take
over. That too is the teaching of the sages.

We must appreciate the beauty of the moment and know
that it is fleeting. It is a gift on loan from God. There is a
prayer in the musaf service of Rosh Hashanah and Yom
Kippur called Hayom. Today may we be strengthened,
today let us be blessed. Eight times it repeats the word
Hayom—today. Today captures that understanding of
living in the moment, appreciating it, and knowing that it
is a gift from God. We don't own it. It is simply given to
us on loan and for that we must be grateful.

My colleague Rabbi Weiss tells the following description
of his Hayom moment: "My Hayom moment for this year
found me sitting with my wonderful siblings around my
father’s bed as he passed from this world. Breathing
heavily in those final days, saying our names individually,
he mouthed with deep emotion what I believe were his
final words: I love you. Even as we held him tight he was
slipping away. And when I saw my father just a moment
after he died, I broke out in uncontrollable tears—I did
not want to let him go. It had taken me weeks to live the
message of embracing with open arms—of holding on to
the moment while also recognizing that as Abba died, he
was "placed in God’s trust." Rabbi Weiss reminds us that
the greatest teaching of the high holidays is the one that
heightens our sensitivity to the present while
appreciating its fleeting nature.

State of the President
Notes ...from the Cantor
Have I got a committee for you!
I am very excited to be Tifereth
Israel’s new president. The past
presidents have done a fantastic
job, and I want to continue the
trend. I NEED YOU!
I have always been taken with the
importance of light in Judaism. We
begin the formal part of our
Shacharit services with a blessing
about light, and continue with a
blessing thanking G-d for the
Torah, which is our spiritual
source of light. Shabbat, the most
important day of the week, is
surrounded by light. We welcome
Shabbat with the lighting of
candles and bid Shabbat farewell with the lighting of the
Havdalah candle.
I am very proud to be Jewish, and
basically, that is why I accepted this
presidency. I want our synagogue
to flourish more. We offer a lot of
different things, such as Friday
night beach services (what a peaceful way to usher in
Shabbat). The Rabbi has held joint classes with the
church in Mattapoissett, and is continuing them this fall.
Plus Adult Ed classes for everyone. We also offer well
known speakers. And if you never had a Bar/Bat Mitzvah
ceremony, the Cantor has a class for that, too.
There is so much that TI offers. But we need you to help
it all be a success. We are the Chosen People; we all
know that comes with a “price”. There is so much in the
world that needs our help, but our synagogue could use
it, too. I have been working on encouraging people to
join some of our committees, and have been told more
than once that I am relentless and could be like a pit bull,
never giving up (no offense to pit bulls), but it’s only
because I like TI. It is a big part of my life, and I want it to
continue to thrive.
In Judaism, light is portrayed and used in its physical
and spiritual sense. With this in mind, I challenge the
members of Tifereth Israel Congregation to begin doing
a new mitzvah on a regular basis and bring Jewish light
into your homes. Following are a list of possible
suggestions. I have material available to teach you how
to do any of the following mitzvot:.
•
•
•
•
•
If you’ve never been on a committee before or if it’s been
a while, think about joining one * or two. We have many
to choose from. From the Beautification Committee (if
you have an artistic side), to Programming, to
Investment, there is a committee for you at TI. The
satisfaction of knowing you did something to help our
community is well worth the time.

Light Shabbat candles on Friday night
Make Havdalah at the end of Shabbat
Bless your children on Friday evening
Make Kiddush and Motzi at your Friday evening
meal
Have a Friday evening meal together with family
and friends
Say Grace After Meals
Learn to lead a weekday service
Say Shema before you go to sleep
There is one other mitzvah that I would like to suggest;
one for which I need your help. I am speaking of
chanting from the Torah or chanting a Haftarah. Over
the years, several people with these skills have moved
from our community. I am looking for people who would
like to learn the ancient art of chanting from the Tanach.
I would like to build a group of individuals who will be
able to chant from the Torah when I am away. I would
also like to increase the number of individuals who can
chant a Haftarah. If you have these abilities or would
like to learn them, please contact me. It’s not as difficult
a process as you might imagine.
I am very enthusiastic about the next two years. I want to
have many successful events. AND yes, that can only
happen with your help. We can all work together to
achieve this dream.
Please either call the office (508-997-3171) or email me
at [email protected] and we can help you find the
right committee.
I look forward to seeing us succeed as a flourishing
community.
Nothing would make me happier than to sit with you and
teach one of the above mentioned skills. I look forward
to hearing from each of you!
Dani and I wish you all a Happy and Healthy New Year.
Always a time for good news!
Simmon Tov u'Mazal Tov!!
We'd love to share your simcha
with the congregation ~
your news is very welcome!

Educationally Speaking
From the Executive Director’s Desk
School is just about ready to begin,
and I begin my third year as the
Educational Director at the Ziskind
School of Judaism. It has been
wonderful for me to teach and work
in such a caring and warm
community. I really feel that the
families here have a strong
connection.
One of my roles in overseeing
operations for Tifereth Israel is the
care and maintenance of our
building. Being in a 50-year old
building means that there are many
items that need to be taken care of,
both on an ongoing basis, and as
one-time projects. With that in mind,
I’d like to update the congregation on
some of the recent and near-term
work going on in the building.
We have some new activities
planned for this year. One of our themes is Kesher—
building bonds with our families. First is our Chevrah
Potluck Shabbat. (Chevrah is a close-knit group.) The
classes will get together for a Friday night Shabbat meal
at a classmate's home; each family will bring a potluck
item. My goal is that through sharing food and talk, these
families will form a bond that will grow as their children
continue to grow at the Ziskind School. This idea was
suggested by one of our new Tifereth Israel families. I
thought it was a wonderful idea and am so happy we are
able to implement it. I am looking forward to being with
the families in this informal and inviting setting.
As Stan Sherman had reported, we planned to transform
a room in the Sanctuary balcony into a new classroom
(which can also double as an extra meeting room). This
was necessitated by the rental of our school wing over
the last few years to Our Sisters School. Our Ziskind
School of Judaism has been squeezed for space over
these last years, and this new classroom will help
alleviate that problem. The room, previously used
primarily as a document storage room, has now been
cleaned out, and as of this writing, floor washing, wall
painting, and the placement of a room-sized rug are
imminent. Also in the works is the creation of an
extension to raise the height of the balcony railing, and
the purchase of classroom furnishings. Our goal is to
have this room ready for use before the start of the new
school year.
The second activity involves our sixth and seventh grade
students. Not only are they busy preparing for their B’Nai
Mitzvah, but they also will be volunteering in the
community. Once a month, they will be going to the New
Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home and Gifts to Give.
At the convalescent home, the students will be engaging
in activities with the residents there. Whether it is
creating a Jewish holiday art project or reading to the
resident, they will be bringing joy. At Gifts to Give, the
students will learn what it is like to give back to the
community. In the past, we have helped clean the toys
and check items to make sure they work and all the
game pieces are there. We will also be collecting items
to donate. Gifts to Give is a beautiful asset to our
community. It helps families in need, not just with
clothes, but also books and toys for every child. There is
even a birthday project where each child receives a new
age-appropriate toy and wrapping paper that is
decorated by the younger students. I am looking forward
to taking the students there and continuing a relationship
between the Ziskind School and Gifts to Give.
We welcome three new Madrichim to our school:
Spencer Perez-Dormitzer, Jackie Mindlin, and Julia
Rosenberg will be joining our strong team. Our
Madrichim have always been instrumental in supporting
the students and teachers in their studies. They are
positive role models for the students and serve as
mentors. They assist teachers with materials
preparation, record keeping, and tutoring. They
participate and encourage student participation during
music, dance or t’filah sessions with great energy. They
help involve students in the lesson and help keep
individual students on task. Many times, they will work
The late spring and early summer were dedicated to a
significant clean-out effort in the building. The creation of
a “document retention policy”, detailing how long
different types of information need to be saved, gave us
the guidelines for cleaning out the document storage
room. Most of the paper in that room was sent to a
shredding company; more recent documents were
carefully stored elsewhere. And posters (both
commercially made and home-made collections of TI
pictures) were carefully culled, sorted, and stored
elsewhere, as relevant.
Beyond the paper-based objects, many other objects
were sorted, and two full commercial-grade dumpsters
were filled with trash. Though most of this is behind the
scenes to congregants, it makes a big difference for our
operations and our space flexibility.
As we cleared out corners of the synagogue, we
gathered up many pieces of art that have found their way
here over the years. Much of it had previously been
taken down to make room for other pieces or to give a
cleaner look to the building. Other items had never been
hung. We recently reconstituted a Beautification
Committee (and thank you to those who have
volunteered to serve on it). The committee reviewed the
stock of artwork and available wall space, and made
recommendations on placement of the pieces. We
should soon see these going up on the walls.

Our Book Club continues to thrive. Amid the wackiest
presidential race ever and worldwide news of terrorists,
it’s good to meet monthly at Sisterhood Book Club to
discuss national and global events, with a Jewish
perspective. Many of these books present historical
background to provide context and help us to understand
the challenges these characters face. Recently, we read
Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a true story of a woman
raised in a strict Muslim family who escaped a forced
marriage to eventually become a champion for women’s
rights. The Museum of Extraordinary Things by Alice
Hoffman took us back to the New York Coney Island freak
shows and the Manhattan Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire
in the early 1900s, two distinct types of tragedies. Saving
Sophie by Ronald H. Balson offered a twisting tale of
a widowed Jewish father who tries to rescue his beloved
daughter after her Muslim grandparents have kidnapped
her. So many themes relate to our world today and
provide great discussions.

(Executive’s Director’s Desk continued from page 4)
(The Rabbi’s Study from page 2)
Another project we’ve been working on for a while has
been the repair of the rear wall of the Sanctuary. The
panels of the wall have been getting increasingly out of
alignment over the years, making it difficult to open and
close the rear doors at times, and sometimes making it
difficult to keep some doors closed. The wall, which is
designed to fully open and fold up into two alcoves at the
rear of the Sanctuary, has not been opened in over a
decade. Unfortunately, it needs to be at least partially
opened in order to properly align the panels. Portions of
the back corners of the carpeting have now been
removed, allowing for the opening of the wall, and the
wall alignment exercise will be proceeding shortly.
The great sage Ibn Ezra said, "A person is concerned
about the loss of money and not the loss of days. Money
can be replenished; days cannot. That is the true
meaning of Hayom. It is to realize that that our time is
limited and we must be a steward of time, never allowing
it to sweep us along. We must not sleepwalk our way in
the world. We must live in the consciousness of Hayom.
Ultimately, this is a call to take control of our lives and
destiny, and live it on our terms, with an authentic
sensibility. Those who live life fully never lose interest in
the world. That is the teaching of Hayom, and may we be
privileged to live our lives in such a manner.
Cindy, Rebecca, Eli, and Micah join me in wishing you
and your family a warm and lovely new year, 5777.
Air quality can deteriorate with a 50-year old building. For
both health and general usability reasons, we had the air
quality in the building tested. I’m happy to say that the
report came back indicating that tested levels of
humidity, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, volatile
organic compounds and mold “do not pose a health risk”.
We’ll continue to make improvements for all our comfort.
(Educationally Speaking from page 4)
with students one-to-one or in small groups as directed
by the teacher. And they stay involved in our school
community, through high school. I have enjoyed seeing
our Madrichim grow and mature and become great
teachers. I've known them since before their B’Nai
Mitzvah, and it has been a privilege and a joy to see
them blossom.
The compressors on the air conditioning systems that
serve the Chapel and the Small Hall are both nearing the
end of their operational lives. Replacing them with
compressors of identical size is expensive and overkill
for the size of those rooms. Replacing them with ones of
smaller size present some compatibility problems with
the rest of the air handling system. We are now
embarking on a formal engineering study which will
present us with options and recommendations. The goal
is to have updated AC systems for these rooms fully in
place before the summer of 2017.
Our last project is a favorite of mine. It is called Hiddur
Mitzvah. Hiddur Mitzvah is the mitzvah to make a
beautiful object. I also believe that when we create
beautiful objects, we should make them a part of home
and our surroundings. Each class will be bringing their
creativeness to the synagogue by making stepping
stones. The classes will make one group stepping stone
representing their class and one smaller stepping stone
to take home.
Lastly, I’d like to report on a project that has nothing to
do with the age of the building, but really is a necessity
based on the evolution of our society. As each year goes
by, security becomes an increasing concern. We have
now engaged with a contractor to install 11 security
cameras around the synagogue (10 outside, including at
all doors, and one inside at the juncture between the
portion of the building that Our Sisters School uses, and
the rest of the building). Live video will be available in our
offices (and, among other things, will give us a view of
who is at each door, and not just the front door, as we
have today), and will be stored for a period of time on a
Digital Video Recorder.
Please come to see what our school is doing. We are
very active, and it is truly wonderful.

Other cleanup and improvement projects in the building
are in the works, as well. I will report on those, when they

is ready to have a great time! We are prepared to
increase our local, regional, and international
participation in order to ensure that our very own New

community, connections, and long-lasting memories. We
have some new and creative ideas that we plan to
execute this year, and we want as many people as
possible to take part in them! To learn more about USY

Men’s Club
A joyous occasion
The Men’s Club held its first Hearing Men’s Voices
session on May 17 at Stan Sherman’s house. The next
one is scheduled for September 15 at Ray Aghai’s
house. Hearing Men’s Voices (HMV) is a program that
engages men in Jewish life by building male
relationships and extending Jewish community.
Hearing Men’s Voices facilitates intimacy among men
through dialogue. Men meet in groups to discuss
common issues. The quality of dialogue can be rich
and enjoyable.
Join us to celebrate the end and

who don’t feel comfortable or conversant with
certain aspects of their Judaism.
The course is also designed for members of the
greater New Bedford/Dartmouth community, both
Jewish and non-Jewish, who would like to get a
better understanding of the Jewish religion, culture,
and history.
(l-r): VP Macy Korolnek, VP Eve Sky, Treasurer Stan Sherman,
Financial Secretary Sue Levin, Recording Secretary Pam
Lewis, VP Liz Ackerman, President Cheryl Zeoli, and Rabbi
Raphael Kanter
This course, provided at no charge, will meet for
eight one-hour sessions per semester, starting on
Monday evenings at 7:00 pm, for a total of 32
sessions. All sessions will be held at Tifereth Israel
Congregation.
Ahavath Achim Yahrzheit Plaque Dedication
After Ahavath Achim closed its doors, Tifereth Israel
received their yahrzeit plaques, in order to continue the
tradition of keeping that congregation’s loved ones in our
community memories. We will be mounting them on a
new display in our sanctuary, to match our own yahrzeit
display.
Semester 1: Spring 2016
Semester 2: Fall 2016
Semester 3: Spring 2017
Semester 4: Fall 2017
We will dedicate this installation in a brief ceremony on
Sunday, September 18, at 11:45 am. The community is
invited to join us as we honor the memories of our loved
ones in such a fitting manner.
The first semester is already complete, but students
are welcome to join at any time.
DEDICATION
The list of instructors for this class includes: Manya
Bark, Wendy Garf-Lipp, Rabbi Raphael Kanter,
