The Daily LinkUp - The Links, Incorporated
The Daily LinkUp Orlando, Florida Friday, July 6, 2012 | Volume 1, Issue V Legacies in Linkdom Celebrated I t was a celebration of Heir-o-Links and Link mothers at Saturday’s Legacy Luncheon with the theme played out as mother-daughter teams directed and conducted the event. National Legacy Affairs Committee Chair and 9th National President, Regina Jollivette Frazier—herself an Heir-o-Link— was introduced by daughter, Rozalynn S. Frazier of the MetroManhattan (NY) Chapter, co-chair of the National Communications Committee. The 14th National President, Gwendolyn B. Lee, was joined in stating the occasion by daughter Michelle Lee-Murrah of the South Suburban Chicago (IL) Chapter. A prayer of invocation was offered by the Rev. Kimberly Copeland of the Metro-Manhattan (NY) Chapter, daughter of National President Margot James Copeland. After the meal, 8th National President Dolly Desselle Adams and her Link daughter, Madelyn Adams of the Dogwood City (GA) Chapter, prepared the audience for rousing rounds of “Links Legacy Jeopardy.” Three teams of randomly selected Links were given the answers, and in Jeopardy style, had to provide the corresponding questions – flexing their Links history muscles. “We wanted it to be fun and we hope it was. This was an opportunity to inform and ignite. It allowed us to engage the audience in the activity and we think they enjoyed it,” said past President Frazier. “The Legacy Luncheon was fun, enriching and extremely educational. I think we should definitely do this again,” said Tonya Canto-Cockfield of the Greater Queens (NY) Chapter. The winning Links team was made up of Link members, including Valita Luckett, Deidre Johnson, Roslyn Smith, Crystal August and Marilyn Jean Ruis. White Rose continue to raise the bar. It is now the time, “ Wemy sisters, that we begin to soar. We are no longer planning. We are delivering. If you will continue to stand tall, rise to the occasion, serve as role models and powerhouses of programing, we will soar. ” BANQUET 15th National President Margot James Copeland 2 Daily LinkUp - 38th National Assembly www.linksinc.org The Heart of Linkdom Central Area Breakfast National President Margot James Copeland began her tour of Saturday morning Area Breakfasts at home, with the Central Area—an event filled with tributes to the past and a call to action for the future. Copeland shared a moment of reflection in recognition of National Communications Chair Cassandra Webster, on the sudden loss of her beloved husband, Connecting Link Amos Webster. The 16th and 17th Central Area Directors, Jeannine Quick-Frasier and Teree Caldwell-Johnson, set the stage for the continuation of the Central Area HBCU legacy - the HBCU Heart of Linkdom Endowed Scholarship Initiative. Area Director Alice Strong Simmons urged members to support the 17 HBCU’s located in the Central Area as either a Pulse, at a minimum donation of $75; a Beat, with a minimum contribution of $85; or a Heart with a donation of $100 or more. The 10 platinum members in attendance received a custom-made pin in recognition of their commitment to friendship and service. Eastern Area gets Scientific for STEM “The time is now to vigorously promote STEM education and the HBCU Initiative. The time is now,” said Eastern Area Director Dianne S. Hardison. Eastern Area Breakfast Keynote speaker, Victor R. McCrary, Jr., Ph.D., who is manager of Emerging Technology and Innovation at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, said it’s important to build a cadre of people of color who are skilled in science and technology. “If you are training a person in science and technology, you are really training a leader,” said McCrary. He encouraged working together in support of the STEM disciplines. In her invocation, Lynn Johnson of the South Jersey (NJ) Chapter said, “We are winding down from the Assembly, but gearing up for the work and programming that has to be done. This is a time for remembering, reenergizing, reaffirming. We celebrate where we have been as we reflect on where we are going.” 3 Daily LinkUp - 38th National Assembly www.linksinc.org Southern Area Stiches STEM & Arts, to “Mentor with a Twist” The new signature program, “Connecting Threads,” integrates STEM into arts education. Under the Area’s banner, “Mentoring with a Twist,” Southern Area Director Eneid Francis rolled out a program that joins the old with the new—as the ancient art of quilting is used to teach middle school students the mathematics needed for a next-generation STEM education. Southern Area Breakfast Guest speaker, award-winning Florida-based fabric artist Billie McCray, used a colorful PowerPoint presentation to demonstrate how quilting can be used to teach geometry as well as mathematics. “Quilting is so educational,” said McCray. “It teaches history, mathematics, art appreciation—the approach has limitless potential.” Southern Area Diamonds were also presented to new platinum and 50-year members. WESTERN AREA “STEM-U-LATES” FOR STEM EDUCATION Western Area Breakfast The theme song to Mission Impossible set the scene as eight “secret agents” entered the breakfast. “The Mission, if you choose to accept it, is incorporating STEM within all chapter programming,” said Western Area Director Constance Fitzgerald Smith. She was backed by Argentina James, national director of Services to Youth, and breakfast co-chair. Western Area Fund Development Director and Breakfast Chair, Viner Manfoot-Greene, said “Our theme is STEM-U-LATING because of the urgent call to ready ourselves and our young for employment in the STEM fields.” Keynote speaker, Crystal E. Ashby, executive VP for Government & Public Affairs at BP America, Inc. said the company supports STEM education as well as students, and that “BP is there to fuel their dreams.” The San Antonio (TX) Chapter kicked-off the Area’s HBCU initiative with a pledge of $25,000. Platinum and 50-year members were honored. 4 Daily LinkUp - 38th National Assembly www.linksinc.org The Links, Incorporated Salutes its Platinum and 50-Year Members National President Margot James Copeland thanks Harry Rosen, owner of Rosen Shingle Creek, the site of the 38th National Assembly for hosting members of The Links, Incorporated. 5 Daily LinkUp - 38th National Assembly www.linksinc.org Links Legacy Jeopardy LINKS LEGACY JEOPARDY How Well w Category Legacy 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
