Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 1, 2015 Readings: Dt 18:15-20; 1 Cor 7:32-35; Mk 1:21-28 The Deacon’s Speakin’ Dear friends, In today’s gospel, Jesus acts with the authority of holiness to banish an unclean spirit – a demon – from a possessed man. Some argue that evil is everywhere and lurks over our shoulder. Others argue that evil in the form of demons and satanic creatures is non-existent and that we believers are paranoid. Seldom do we hear that holiness is pervasive and yet it is. In fact, both holiness and evil exist, as this gospel demonstrates. This gospel narrates the first of many dramatic confrontations between holiness and the evil spirit. Holiness in the person of Jesus is the greater authority, because He is “the Holy One of God.” Holiness is “of God”; evil is everything that is opposed to God. Jesus confronts evil head-on. Evil exists, but because of Jesus, it doesn’t triumph. Like Jesus, we too must confront evil head-on! Like Jesus, we, too, are armed with God’s holiness giving us the authority to banish evil. We, too have the same authority to banish evil because we have been baptized into Christ. This authority is our baptismal birthright. In the gospel, banishing evil is dramatic and instant. In our daily lives, the “battle” is more often less spectacular and more gradual. It’s a lifelong process as we truly come to believe that we are “holy and of God”. Truly, this is amazing Good News! Peace and love, Deacon John Mission Statement St. Paul Catholic Newman Center is a Catholic parish committed to serving the spiritual needs of college/university students, faculty and all other people who freely choose to be part of our parish family. Gathered together by the Spirit and seeking God’s will in our lives, we dedicate ourselves to bringing the transformative power of Christ into the world we know through worship, education, service and support.
