Fourth Sunday of Lent - St. Paul Catholic Newman Center
Fourth Sunday of Lent
March 15, 2015
Readings: 1 Sm 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a; Eph 5:8-14; Jn 9:1-41
THE DEACON’S SPEAKIN’
Dear Friends,
During the season of Lent we come upon the rites that we call
the Scrutinies. The RCIA participants celebrate these rituals as a
means to reflect on the “mystery of sin, from which the whole world
and every person wishes to be freed” (RCIA #142). It is from
growing in understanding of this mystery that they seek to be filled
with Jesus’ spirit.
However, there is a footnote to all of this: The Scrutinies are
not intended only for the elect – the new Christians – if you will.
They are intended to form all of us. These public rituals for the
third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent invite every one of us to
admit our need for living water. They challenge us to examine and
acknowledge our personal “blindness” and they ask us to open our
hearts to a genuine desire for new life in Christ.
We are in the midst of the Scrutinies now and the scriptures
call us back to those founding days and what Jesus intended for his
neophyte community. We hear the founding principles of Jesus’
ministry as we acknowledge our need for living water. We
surrender to God’s graces and examine the sinfulness of our lives.
We also continue to stand in awe of Jesus’ promise of eternal life
for all who believe.
Peace & Love,
Deacon John
Mission Statement
St. Paul Catholic Newman Center is a Catholic parish committed to serving the spiritual needs of
college/university students, faculty and all other people who freely choose to be part of our parish family. Gathered
together by the Spirit and seeking God’s will in our lives, we dedicate ourselves to bringing the transformative
power of Christ into the world we know through worship, education, service and support.
Taize Prayer
Family Life Ministry
During this Lenten Season, let us be mindful of how Jesus
truly died on the Cross for our sins so that we may have
salvation. The next TAIZE prayer service at St. Anthony of
Padua will be held on Monday, March 23, from 7:30 pm to
8:30pm in the Main Church. The church is in darkness, and
candles are on the altar; it is a special and meditative hour
with song and some Scripture, VENERATION at the Cross
and periods of silence.
