Saint
From the President
Dear Saint Mary’s Hall Community,
We are on the final lap of the I AM
Saint Mary’s Hall campaign. Construction
is complete. Students are enjoying the
transformation in facilities at their school.
Faculty and staff are utilizing new and
upgraded facilities that they could only
dream about just two years ago. The
wonderful generosity of our SMH school family has gotten
us very close to our goal of $25 million.
As SMH parents, grandparents, alumni, friends, faculty
and staff, now is the time for you to step up and be a part of
the I AM Saint Mary’s Hall campaign. Closing out a capital
campaign is the most difficult part of the process. We need
your help!
Every gift, at every level makes an impact, and every
dollar gets us closer to the goal of providing facilities and an
endowment to maintain newly constructed buildings for
decades to come. Pledges can be paid over five years, making
a gift possible for every family in our school.
With The Brown Foundation Challenge (details are in
the adjacent article), your gift will go even further towards
meeting our goal. This generous challenge increases the value of
your gift by half. Simply put, your $100,000 gift would become
a $150,000 gift, your $50,000 gift would become a $75,000 gift,
your $10,000 gift would become a $15,000 gift, and your $1,000
gift would become a $1,500 addition to the campaign. What an
amazingly impactful offer from The Brown Foundation.
Please step up and help us meet the challenge of finishing
our campaign. By giving today, you will multiply the impact of
your gift. If you have already made a gift, we thank you for
standing with us and supporting the transformative efforts of
the I AM Saint Mary’s Hall campaign! You are now a part of
something meaningful to the present and future children of
Saint Mary’s Hall.
Sincerely,
Bob Windham
The Brown Foundation.
Rise to the Challenge!
Thanks to the early support of donors, our campaign is going to
be completed in half the time we originally planned! We have almost
reached our goal of $25 million, and through The Brown Foundation,
our community has been presented with an opportunity to increase the
impact of each of our personal gifts.
The Brown Foundation has challenged our school community to
raise the final $1 million needed for the I AM Saint Mary’s Hall campaign by May 2013. If we meet this challenge, The Brown Foundation
will make a donation of $500,000 to the campaign in recognition of our
community’s commitment to the future of our beloved school.
The Brown Foundation, founded in July 1951 by Herman and
Margaret Root Brown and George R. and Alice Pratt Brown, has an
extensive history with Saint
Mary’s Hall. Numerous
members of the Brown
Family have attended and
graduated from our school
over the generations,
beginning with Nancy
Brown Negley (Class
of 1946). Her sisters,
Alice Maconda Brown
O’Connor (Class of
1948) and Isabel
Brown Wilson (Class of
1949) attended as well. Today, the family
legacy continues with many extended family members
of the Brown Family enrolled at Saint Mary’s Hall.
The Brown Foundation distributes funds supporting education,
the arts, and community service. Throughout the years the foundation

Alonso Ancira
Gives $2.5 Million
Alonso Ancira has been involved in philanthropy for years, with projects such as the Ancira
Tower at the University of the Incarnate Word. Earlier this year, Mr. Ancira’s generosity reached the
Saint Mary’s Hall campus. He presented the school with a $2.5 million gift for a new event center,
which will aptly be named the Alonso Ancira Event Center. The 26,000 square foot facility will host
special events including Passport and graduation. It houses two competition size basketball courts with
spectator seating, locker rooms, staff offices, a concession area, and a large covered patio with a dramatic
view of the Salado Creek Basin.
Alonso and his wife Susana are the parents of Sofia, a Form 10 student. Sofia’s education at
Saint Mary’s Hall began in Form 1 and will be broadened with her attendance at a school in Switzerland
for the 2012-2013 school year.
Alonso Ancira is the chairman of the board of Altos Hornos de Mexico San Antonio International,
Inc. (AHMSA), and since 2004 has served as President of the Mexican Industrial Consortium of the
AHMSA and its affiliates. As chairman of the board of Mexicans and Americans Thinking Together
(MATT), one of the most serious and recognized Mexican American Associations, he is strongly
committed to furthering the prosperity of both nations and influencing policy to improve US/Mexico
relations. Alonso was recognized as “International Executive of the Year” in 1992 by the San Antonio
Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Ancira is a member of various board of directors of several
universities and was awarded a Doctorate in Human Letters Honoris Causa from the University of
the Incarnate Word in recognition of his contribution to bilateral relations.
We are proud to have the Ancira Family as part of our community. With their gift, to the
I AM Saint Mary’s Hall campaign, they are making an impact that will affect the Saint Mary’s Hall
community for years to come.
$2.5 Million Donated
By Kim & Rod Lewis
“Deliver big and don’t put on airs” describes a typical Rod Lewis moment. This year,
Kim and Rod Lewis delivered big for Saint Mary’s Hall with a gift totaling $2.5 million. The
Kim & Rod Lewis Track & Field was one of the final projects in the last phase of the I AM
Saint Mary’s Hall campaign. This project included the Ruth Bowman Russell Field House,
a concession stand, press box, stadium seating for nearly 500, restrooms, and a beautiful stone
patio overlooking the field.
The Lewis’ have four adult children, Amanda Rae Lewis (Class of 2005), Nicole Elizabeth
Lewis (Class of 2000), Jessica Lewis Worth (Class of 2000), and Ryan Lewis. They believe strongly
in the importance of education, and the idea that it can help young adults achieve anything in
the world they desire. This idea is evident in the successes of the Lewis children. Amanda played
volleyball and tennis at SMH before joining the Blue Jays at Johns Hopkins University where she
majored in political science with a minor in entrepreneurship and management. Twins Jessica and
Nicole, have also each found success. Jessica will complete her physician assistant studies at The
University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2013. Nicole received a J.D. from St.
Mary’s University and is the in-house corporate counsel for Lewis Energy. This year, we are excited
to welcome Nicole as the newest member of the Saint Mary’s Hall Board of Trustees.
We are grateful to the Lewis Family for their investment in Saint Mary’s Hall, and look
forward to current and future generations of students and families enjoying the Kim & Rod
Lewis Track & Field.

(The Brown Foundation, continued from front cover)
has generously funded many programs that create the margin of excellence that is
Saint Mary’s Hall. Our students have directly benefitted from both designated and
undesignated gifts in support of scholarships, financial aid, and campus improvements;
and our deserving faculty has been compensated annually through the endowment that
funds our “Recognition for Excellence in Teaching” program.
Whenever called upon in the past, The Brown Foundation has answered. The
current I AM Saint Mary’s Hall campaign is no exception. Earlier this year, The
Brown Foundation agreed to participate in the campaign, by asking our community
to rise to a challenge . . . The Brown Foundation Challenge. If successful, The Brown
Foundation will grant Saint Mary’s Hall $500,000. These funds will help ensure the
successful completion of the largest and most comprehensive campus improvement
project since the construction of our Starcrest campus in 1968.
We are deeply appreciative to The Brown Foundation and Brown Family for
both their past generosity, and for this exciting new opportunity which allows SMH
parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends to increase the impact of
their personal gifts.
For more information on The Brown Foundation Challenge, and how
you can help, contact the Office of Advancement at (210) 483-9136 or visit
