CANNON In Celebration of their 50th Wedding Anniversary on December 18. Love is not as simple as candlelight and roses. Love is day-to-day living, taking time, making time to be there, with open arms and a giving heart. Love is the special life we will always share. “So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them.” 1 John 4:16 1945-2015 Theme: "HONORING OUR LEGACY, RESETTING OUR FUTURE” “So let’s do it—full of belief, confident that we’re presentable inside and out. Let’s keep a firm grip on the promises that keep us going. He always keeps his word. Let’s see how inventive we can be in encouraging love and helping out, not avoiding worshiping together as some do but spurring each other on, especially as we see the big Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:22-25 (THE MESSAGE) 1 WORSHIP CELEBRATION “But Jesus called the children to him and said, ‘Let the little children come to me.’” Luke 18:16 (NIV) Church School begins at 8 AM (Children and Youth) and 11 am (Children) in the Love Educ. Bldg. Please sign your child in before you go to the Sanctuary and sign them out when you leave! Thank you. Take time and make space for peace and prepare the way for the Lord. ________________________ * Congregation rise as you are able. *** Worshipers may enter. 2 Reader 2: All: Though the road to peace is a long walk to freedom, as peacemakers we work together. We light this fourth candle of Advent to affirm our collective commitment to peace though justice. Lord of Peace, we await your coming with great expectation. In the midst of terror, allow our lives to be marked by peace, even when our circumstance might prove to the contrary. We proclaim the coming of the Christ – whose birth and impact we prepare to celebrate once again. We prepare for, and participate in the coming of Christ – who comes continually in Word and Spirit – through our living and serving. In anticipation of Christ's final victory, the season invites us to be and become ambassadors of God's love, hope, peace, and joy" WORDS OF APPRECIATION Rev. Sauls and the Jazz for the Soul Worship team offer thanks to all who gave to help the Kid City Band from the Urban Foundation reach their end-of-year $3000 goal! With your help, we collected $500 to help these talented young people grow in their gift to bring joy to the world’ through music. You are truly “I Will” Christians!! HOLMAN FACTOID Fifteen Glendale families drove south to the West Adams Community. It was the first time some had come to Los Angeles and/or actually spoke to and shook hands with people of color. During the meeting in the Education Building, a couple of them were surprised to see such affluence among Negroes shooting down the stereotype that all blacks were poor. An honest discussion on both sides dissolved long-held beliefs and established lasting friendships. Black and white members went on field trips to find that quality of goods and services varied depending on the zip code. Food bought at two different chain markets were compared in a demonstration in the Glendale FM community room and verified that black communities were being given inferior merchandise. Over a few months, Members United in Saving and Improving our Community brought the disparity to the media and changes were made to correct the inconsistencies throughout California. A Holmanite wrote and published "The Sound is M.U.S.I.C." for Harper's magazine, and the venture had a national audience. A few original committee members are still at Holman today. Submitted by Don A. Norman, Historian and an original M.U.S.I.C. Convention Center – Kenshaw Hall (South Hall) GUEST SPEAKER: REV. OLIVER BUIE 11 Worship Celebration 8:00 A.M. & 11:00 A.M. SERMON NOTES “PREGNANT WITH POSSIBILITY” SCRIPTURE LUKE 1:46-55 Rev. Kelvin Sauls SCRIPTURE REFLECTION Advent reaches its completion in gathered worship today. We stand, on this day, with Mary, pregnant with the age to come. Some of the coming age is already here, still in development. Much awaits a further revealing. Mary was pregnant with possibility! But there is much about the coming age, the fulfillment of all things in Christ, we do know. And this is the day we join the voices of women and prophets to proclaim and rejoice in it. In Mary’s Song, also known as “Magnificat,” the extent and content of Mary’s belief and hope are made clear. And so, likewise, the extent and content of the hope of the church are made clear. Mary’s Song is a song of praise and rejoicing. Like most such songs in the Bible, particularly in the Psalms, the song begins by announcing that Mary is in a state of praising God, followed by the reasons for her praise. Her song rejoices in a pregnancy filled with possibility. "My soul magnifies the Lord . . . for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant." The lowliness of Mary recapitulates the lowliness of Bethlehem in the prophecy from Micah. The "strength of God's arm" acts as both defender against oppressors (the proud, the mighty, the rich) and provider for the oppressed (the lowly, the hungry). Mary’s song translates her pregnancy as one filled with possibility.
