Strong Business
Investment
The Netherlands continues to see strong growth with
significant investment by companies from around
the world. Tesla, easyJet, ExxonMobil, Michael Kors,
Forever 21 and Cipla were among the major enterprises
advancing capital to Holland and driving job growth.
With the assistance of the Netherlands Foreign
Investment Agency (NFIA) and its Invest in Holland
partners, the Netherlands attracted more than 300
new foreign investment projects in 2015 from around
the globe. Those projects represent nearly €1.87
billion in planned capital investment and the creation
and retention of 9,300 jobs. The NFIA’s efforts alone
contributed to the realization of 207 projects, worth
€1.76 billion in investment and 7,779 new jobs – an
extraordinary accomplishment.
Globally, the United States, United Kingdom, China, Japan
and Germany are fueling growth in the Netherlands by
providing thousands of jobs to the Netherland’s highly
capable workforce. Our world-class transportation and
communications infrastructure, innovative outlook and
competitive fiscal climate are also helping to attract
investments from some of the biggest names in business.
For multinational companies that want to set up and
expand operations in Europe, the Netherlands should
quite simply be at the top of the list. We encourage you
to go Dutch!
Warm Regards,
Jeroen Nijland
Commissioner
Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency
“This leading European Brainport region has developed a strong cluster of companies and knowledge
institutes in the field of sports, technology and design. By establishing ourselves in the area, we
strengthen our strategic position.”
Marc van Rooij, President, Shimano Europe Holding Group
Headquarters & Hubs
Located strategically on the continent, the Netherlands is in the center of
the three largest economies in Europe – Germany, the UK and France. This
position makes the Netherlands a perfect springboard into the European
market – with easy access to 95% of Europe’s most lucrative consumer markets
within 24 hours of Amsterdam or Rotterdam.
Foreign investors have taken note and set up headquarters and other hubs
at a steady clip in the Netherlands during the past year – from the China
Construction Bank to a recently renamed Turkish company called Faselis that
aims to radically change communication between PR agencies and the media.
easyJet Last year British easyJet, Europe’s leading
airline, celebrated the opening of its new service center
at Schiphol Airport Amsterdam and added a fourth
aircraft to its fleet at the airport. The extra aircraft
brought the total number of easyJet employees based
at the airport and employed on Dutch contracts to
about 160.
Hikvision The Chinese company Hikvision
Digital Technology, a leading supplier of digital video
surveillance products and solutions with more than
14,000 employees worldwide, built new European
headquarters in a bustling business park in Hoofddorp,
near Schiphol Airport Amsterdam. The new HQ also
handles European sales and marketing, distribution and
technical support.
HEAD Aerospace HEAD Aerospace Technology
Co. is setting up a new office in the Space Business
Innovation Center in Noordwijk in West Holland. The
Chinese company, which sells advanced space products
and technology to the commercial space market
worldwide, plans to invest €10 million in its first three
years in the Netherlands, mostly on R&D activities and
marketing and sales.
Shimano Starting in 2017, the High Tech Campus
(HTC) in Eindhoven will become home to the European
center for research and product development of
the Japanese Shimano group, the worldwide market
leader in the development and manufacture of bicycle
components, fishing rods and reels, and rowing
equipment. Shimano chose the HTC in view of the
growing importance of a global business environment,
the presence of young talent and a strong focus
on innovation. Shimano’s sales organization for the
Benelux and the European logistics center will remain
in Nunspeet in central Holland.
Fashion Distributed
Driven by world-class seaports, airports,
roads, rail and broadband, the Netherlands
has become a hub for foreign-owned
logistics and distribution operations with
two notable American investments in 2015:
“The construction of a new, innovative
distribution center is an important
and exciting step in the evolution of
Michael Kors.”
John D. Idol
Chairman and CEO
Michael Kors
Michael Kors In June, U.S.-based luxury fashion brand
Michael Kors began construction of its nearly 93,000-squaremeter European distribution center in Venlo’s Trade Port North.
The facility will be the largest of its kind in Venlo and is expected
to create 400 jobs over the next decade.
Forever 21 American fashion chain Forever 21 is
undergoing a major expansion of its European distribution
capacity in Bergen op Zoom.

Life Sciences Soar
Long known for its deep knowledge
in life sciences and healthcare, the
Netherlands continues to attract
pharmaceutical, biotech and medical
technology companies from around
the globe.
Two U.S. medical device companies,
for example, are expanding –
Medtronic and Applied Medical.
Eurofins Scientific Belgium-based Eurofins, a
global leader in food, environment and pharmaceutical
product testing services, is expanding its Laboratory
Zeeland Flanders (LZF) in Graauw, in the southwestern
Dutch province of Zeeland, to establish a European
dioxin research center that will create 60 additional jobs.
Cipla Indian pharmaceutical and biotechnology
company Cipla opened a pan-European quality control
laboratory in Utrecht in September. The lab will test
Cipla’s commercial products before they can be sold in
the European market and expects to employ up to 50
people over the next three years.
Big Business:
From Cars to Data
The Netherlands is a worldclass business destination,
whether it’s fueling the success
of global companies or fostering
entrepreneurs and start-ups.
Tesla Since opening a new factory in Tilburg in
September, Tesla has been supplying European
customers with 450 Model S luxury sport sedans each
week. The car factory is the first in Europe with its own
indoor production test track.
ExxonMobil In late October, ExxonMobil
announced it will expand the hydrocracker unit at its
Rotterdam refinery. The €900 million project will turn
ExxonMobil’s refinery in the Netherlands into one of the
most energy efficient in Europe.
Keppel T&T Keppel Telecommunications &
Transportation Ltd., which is based in Singapore, opened
a second 10,922-square-meter data center in Almere
next to its existing data center, doubling its data center
footprint in the Netherlands. Amsterdam is a first-tier
data center market in Europe with strong demand, due to
its proximity to major European trading hubs, excellent
telecommunications infrastructure and government
support.
“There’s a lot of information technology talent at TU Delft, which is at the same level as in Silicon
Valley, but without the fierce competition.”
Erik Meijer, CEO, Applied Duality
Boundless Innovation
Companies – from big to small – recognized the Netherlands as fertile ground
for innovation. To support the startup boom, New York-based WeWork
opened two workplaces for entrepreneurs, startups and freelancers in
Amsterdam during 2015.
Massachusetts-based Cambridge Innovation Center chose Rotterdam for its
first international expansion, with CIC Founder and CEO Tim Rowe noting:
“The Dutch have one of the most entrepreneurial cultures in Europe.”
Carnival Miami-based Carnival Corporation, the
world’s leading cruise company, announced it will invest
€70 million in the city of Almere for a new training
facility and hotel on its Carnival Campus and Center of
Excellence, which originally opened in the Netherlands
in 2009. The centerpiece of the campus will be a new
and larger Center for Simulator Maritime Training
(CSMART). The facility will be used by all 10 of Carnival’s
worldwide cruise brands for professional maritime
training, development and research.
StartMonday After participating in a Dutch
Startup Boot Camp, UK-based StartMonday scrapped
plans to move back to Berlin and decided to stay in
Amsterdam instead. The company offers employers a
tool to receive 15-second videos of applicants instead
of paper résumés.
Applied Duality Silicon Valley-based software
developer, Applied Duality, is opening an office in
Delft to take advantage of the region’s focus on high
tech innovation and proximity to Delft University of
Technology. Founder Erik Meijer worked as a software
architect at Microsoft prior to launching the company in
2013, and has since developed a unique programming
model, Reactive Extensions (Rx), that is already being
used by Netflix, Facebook and Google.
