7th GRADE VISION AND DENTAL SCREENINGS
Friday, May 1st
Vision and Dental Screenings will take place for all 7th graders on Friday, May 1st. Please remind your student to wear or bring their glasses on that day! In honor of Dental Screening Day, here are some tidbits for you to chew on…. The average American eats over 147 pounds of sugar each year. Sweets taste good, but eating too many is not healthy for our bodies and can harm teeth. Bacteria living in the mouth form a sticky substance called “plaque”. Each time we eat something that contains sugar the plaque uses it to make acids that eat away at the protective enamel. This creates tiny holes that grow into CAVITIES!! Natural sugars in fresh fruits and juices, honey, molasses and corn syrup have the same effect as do starchy foods like bread, chips and potatoes that break down into sugars in your mouth. Brushing every time you eat is the best way to fight cavities but since that is not always possible try:  




Offering sweets only as desserts instead of between meals. The more often teeth are ex
posed to sugar the greater the damage. Having your child rinse his mouth with water after eating. Choosing snacks wisely. Sticky foods are harmful as they stay on teeth longer. Dairy foods like milk, cheese and yogurt are a great source of calcium and help protect teeth. Raw veg‐
gies and fruit are great choices too. Discouraging constant nibbling. The more often one eats, the more those decay causing bac‐
teria eat too. Making soft drinks only occasional treats. A 12 ounce pop contains the equivalent of 10 tea‐
spoons of sugar!! Colas have harmful acids and non‐colas contain additives and organic acids that leave teeth susceptible to decay. Use a straw‐ there is less contact with teeth. To beware of sports drinks, commercially prepared teas and lemonades that are loaded with sugar and may be more harmful than pop. Better choices are water, milk or 100% fruit juices. REMIND YOUR CHILD TO:
BRUSH with a soft toothbrush at least twice a day FLOSS DAILY—Floss reaches many areas a toothbrush can’t EAT HEALTHY FOODS— limit sugary snacks in between meals SCHEDULE at least a YEARLY DENTAL CHECKUP—Professional cleaning removes debris on teeth that builds up despite the best tooth brushing efforts at home **If you do not have dental insurance, please see your school nurse for resources.
Gladstone schools to begin Smarter Balanced testing What is Smarter Balanced? This spring, Gladstone students will be taking the state-‐required Smarter Balanced tests in English and math. The new tests replace Oregon’s OAKS tests in English and math, required for many years. Smarter Balanced is the same test that will be given in 17 other states. A similar test, PARCC, will be offered in a dozen other states. How are the new tests different than the OAKS tests? Aligned to our Common Core Curriculum, The Smarter Balanced tests include writing at every grade level, new question types, and performance tasks that allow students to demonstrate research, writing, critical thinking, and problem-‐solving skills. Test questions come in many forms, and allow students to interact with graphs and to type their own responses in addition to selecting answers in a multiple-‐choice format. Essay questions give students the opportunity to use evidence from multiple sources to build arguments and explain their reasoning. The tests will given in sections over a few days. These tests are not timed, and students will be allotted the time they need to complete the test. While the test takes longer than the OAKS tests used previously, students will be tested only one time at each designated grade level. After we have test results next fall, we will determine how to share those results with parents. Who will take the tests? The tests will be given in both English and in math at grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 11. At John Wetten and Kraxberger, the tests will be given after Spring Break. At Gladstone High, the tests will start May 11. Any questions? If you have questions about the Smarter Balanced tests, please email [email protected] and our education team will provide a response in the new Frequently Asked Questions section of our website. If you have a question about your student’s unique needs or participation in the test, please contact your school principal. Community Clothes Closet

By Thomas Nashe
Spring, the sweet spring,
is the year’s pleasant king,
Then blooms each thing,
then maids dance in a ring,
Cold doth not sting,
the pretty birds do sing:
Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we,
to-witta-woo!
The palm and may make
country houses gay,
Lambs frisk and play,
the shepherds pipe all day,
And we hear aye birds
tune this merry lay:
Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we,
to-witta-woo!
The fields breathe sweet,
the daisies kiss our feet,
Young lovers meet,
old wives a-sunning sit,
In every street these
tunes our ears do greet:
Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we,
to witta-woo!
Spring, the sweet spring
