Chronicle, while the company is always looking to expand its headcount, wannabe Google employees
will first have to get past a rigorous interview process. Some of the tricky interview questions which a
candidate might face during a job interview at the tech giant include:

• A man pushed his car to a hotel and lost his fortune. What happened?
• How many golf balls can fit in a school bus?

Dealing with criticism the best way possible
The best jobs for 2011 revealed
Global - Nobody likes being criticized, especially at work. But when
criticism comes your way, whether it is from your colleague or
superior, how can you deal with it calmly?
Global - Are you a historian, dental hygienist or an audiologist? If
so, your job was recently said to be one of the best jobs for the year,
according to Careercast.com.
1. Listen to what the person is saying. Instead of going on the
defense immediately, try to take a step back and see if there is
any grain of truth to the criticism. Remind yourself that certain
critiques, especially from superiors, are meant to help you improve
in your work.
The top professions were rated as positions which give the
best overall experience for workers. These positions also offer a
comfortable work environment, few intense physical demands,
better than average income and had comparatively low stress.
2. Don’t shoot your mouth off. Sometimes in the heat of the
moment, you might feel like you need to criticize your critic. But
doing so won’t help you, as it would just make you sound defensive
while escalating the exchange. Instead, take a deep breaths and
count to ten before trying to explain your actions in a calm and
rational manner.
At the top of the list is the position of dental hygienist, a dental
professional who specialises in preventative oral health. Another job
in healthcare is the position of an audiologist, a person who works
with ear problems.
Historians, biologists and meteorologists also made the list, with
computer systems analysts, statisticians, mathematicians and
software engineers rounding out the list as well.
3. Take responsibility for your mistakes. If you were truly in
the wrong, it would be best if you admit responsibility for your
mistakes. Show your critic that you’ve learnt something from the
mistake and talk about how you would rectify your mistake. This
shows a willingness to ownership of your actions.

many choose to rely on phone interviews to get a gauge of
the person’s personality before deciding whether they should invite
them into the office for a longer chat.
So how can you excel during a phone interview?
1. Know the basics. Before the phone interview, you should know
what the company does, its industry, as well as details of your job.
What are some of the general duties and responsibilities of the
position you are applying for? You should not seem clueless about
the job because that makes you seem as ill-prepared and not
sincere about the application
2. Be aware of your tone. Because the interviewer is unable to
gauge your body language over the phone, it is important that you
sound upbeat, engaged and interested.
3. Put away the distractions. If you’re watching television, turn
it off. If you are driving, ask if you can call them back, then pull
over into a safe spot and take the call. Trying to multi-task while
you’re taking the phone call will make you seem distracted to the
interviewer.

wasn’t the right fit for me. Should I include this job in my CV or am I better to leave a gap? If I do include it, will the shortness of my

because the role or organisation were not
what they thought they would be.
Sorry to hear that your last role didn’t
work out. As tempting as it may be to
forget this experience and leave it off your
CV, I advise against this. If you leave gaps
in your CV, potential employers usually
suspect the worst.
In fact, in a recent survey we conducted
in Hong Kong and China, 28 percent of
respondents said the reality of working
for their organisation is nothing like they
were expecting.
When we receive a CV with a gap in work
experience, we’ll contact the candidate
for an explanation and often discover
they carried out a temporary assignment,
travelled for a few months, took a few
months to find their next role or, like you,
left a role they had only recently started
But while I do advise you to include
this role in your CV, there is no need
to elaborate upon your reasons for
leaving. You may still harbour distress
over the whole experience, but do not
go into detail in your CV. Instead you
should simply list your commencement
and departure dates, state that you left
of your own accord, and of course list
your responsibilities and one or two
achievements while you were in the role.
Then move on.
Good luck.
Stating the years, rather than the months
you started or finished the role is not the
answer either. For example, writing “2010
– 2011” when you were in fact employed
from November 2010 to February 2011.
It’s best to be honest in your CV.
For you, your career objective becomes
even more important. Use it to emphasise
that you are looking for a role in a

An Interview With AJ Anderson
Hong Kong based athlete AJ Anderson tells of his first forays into the sport of triathlon and how he motivates himself and those around him in the pursuit
of excellence.
Beginnings
My first ever triathlon was a sprint distance race located in Cairns Australia, where I won my age group wearing a pair of red speedos and riding a matching red bike! The taste of
success and a new found passion prompted my premature retirement from the Royal Australian Navy to pursue my dream of becoming a professional triathlete. I took an opportunity
to train alongside the National Swiss team in Australia and Switzerland and then moved to Thailand to train with another squad of professional athletes. Since then I have competed in
triathlon races all over the world from Sprints to Ironman.
What are your motivations and aspirations?
As an athlete knowing that I have the opportunity and ability to achieve a high level in triathlon motivates me to develop the necessary skills. I continue to strive to fulfill my ambitions
and achieve my potential. As a coach I want to pass on the benefit of my own triathlon knowledge as well as the experience gained from training with the world’s elite. Seeing my
athletes achieve their individual goals is so rewarding, particularly those that juggle demanding careers and families.
What is your biggest challenge in a busy city such as Hong Kong?
As a full time student at Hong Kong University, as a coach and an athlete I find time management plays a major role if you want to be successful in anything. I try to get my training
done in the morning before classes’ start, which eliminates any stress of trying to fit in sessions later in the day. Avoiding the traffic by getting out early is the key to riding in Hong Kong
it also sets you up for the day making you feel energized.
What is your most memorable/favourite race?
My very first Ironman holds some fond memories, forgetting my race number in a port-a-loo and running back to find an outstretched arm holding it! The Laguna Phuket Triathlon is
also a favorite, which takes place in December, this is an end of the season race and has one of the best after party’s in Asia and plus you get to run down the finishers chute with
an elephant!
As a coach do you have any advice for those taking up the sport?
Keep it simple, learn the basics and filter what you hear and read. Consistency is the key, training week in, week out improving and developing as an athlete takes time. For those
high achievers, I always relate their triathlon goals to the climbing of the corporate ladder and ask, ‘how much hard work and how long did it take you to get to the position you are in
now?’ 10,000 hours is a good starting point. Hong Kong is such an amazing city with lots of distractions and temptations. Surrounding yourself with others in the sport will help you to
focus and stay motivated. Ultimately being healthy and active outside of the office can have such a positive impact on your performance in the workplace too, which can only be a
good thing.

Make the Case
for a HR Business Partnership
As HR departments start to shrink, here’s how HR professionals like yourself can
become a better business partner in the workplace.

n a time when improving work productivity is everything, it comes as no surprise that HR
departments are shrinking in size. While the old HR departments were staffed with personnel administrators tasked to perform administrative tasks, companies are now outsourcing these
tasks to cheaper locations, cheaper vendors or simply making them more efficient through the use of
information technology systems.
So what are some ways to become more effective and strategic in your job?
1) Get an outsider’s take
Take the time to understand how the company and
how the senior managers perceive HR and its business
value. To obtain a 360-degree view of how the HR
function is perceived, request for time with decisionmakers, such as the CEO, CFO and other heads of
departments to understand their job priorities, work
and manpower-related challenges. These conversations
will enable you to get a deeper understanding of
how the HR function can improve to provide better
business value to the company.
2) Save your (company’s) time and money Reduce your amount of administrative HR clutter.
You can do this either by buying an information
technology system, building upon an existing one
or outsourcing the process out to a vendor. Some of
the usual time-consuming functions companies often
manage include payroll, attendance and pay leave.
Automating certain HR processes can empower line
managers as well. Instead of paper leave systems where
employees fill out paper forms stating their reasons for
leave, an online e-leave application system that gives
approval control to managers will increase managers’
say and control over their departments. It also speeds
up the leave approval process too.
Due to the economies of scale, bigger companies
obviously stand to gain greater benefits from
outsourcing. But that is not to say that small
companies will not benefit at all. An American
survey conducted by the Society of Human Resource
Management found 89 percent of HR practitioners
customers reporting that outsourcing helped
significantly reduced the time it took to for HR
practitioners to perform HR transactions. Companies
with less than nine employees said they saved seven
hours on HR transactions per week saved, while
organisations with more than 100 employees saw the
greatest benefits with savings of more than 48 hours
each week.
3) Generate higher retention levels
In the current war for talent, one of HR’s most
valuable service to the business is helping raise
employees’ retention rates. Replacing an exiting
employee can be expensive, costing anywhere from 30
to 250 percent of an employee’s annual compensation
after one takes factors in figures such as a loss in
business performance, customer satisfaction and the
cost of recruitment and staff on-boarding.
When developing retention plans, one trap HR
practitioners and business partners fall into a trap
thinking that employees are solely driven by money.
Although it is true that money ranks as a high priority,
many are also driven by other factors such as a
fulfilling job, work-life flexibility, job autonomy and
having a good supervisor.
In order to develop a retention programme that works,
one must first get to the bottom of what really appeals
to the employees. If you have a company full of young
Gen Y workers, introducing flexi-work hour scheme
may not appeal to their needs and goals. Similarly,
subsidizing gym or club benefits may not sit well with
the more mature workers in your company.

4) Talent development is in your hands
As companies struggle to fill their leadership gaps, HR practitioners
should take active steps in engaging high-potentials, while carving out
a long-term succession pipeline for the company.
A good talent management programme first needs a benchmark on
which companies can choose future leaders and high-potentials.
By examining the common traits and values of the company’s bestperforming employees, HR practitioners can help use this to create
a blueprint for the high-potential selection process. By seeking out
potential leaders and managers, and investing more time, effort
and training dollars in this group of people, it helps highly-driven
employees define a career path for them within the company while
engaging them at the same time.
HR practitioners can also use information system tools to help in their
talent management role, making it easier for them to automate and
streamline talent management processes such as applicant tracking
and goals management. The use of performance management tools
can also help line managers execute performance reviews, career and
succession plans, while aligning employees’ career goals.
Coaching and mentoring leaders and middle-managers is also an
effective way of raising the organisations’ leadership capabilities. As the
business landscape becomes more complex, helping leaders improve
on their soft skills and navigate through tricky work decisions will
become an valuable HR service to the business.

5) Improve your HR skills
Becoming a successful business partner may entail strategic
thinking on issues such as change management and organisational
development. For some HR practitioners, the ability to perform at a
management level would require an upgrade in their business skills
and proficiencies.
One good way is to attend short business classes or undertake
Executive MBA courses where you can learn more about the business
undertakings that go beyond the HR cubicle. Another way would
be to improve on your soft skills such as negotiation tactics and
presentation skills.
Conclusion
When trying to win top management buy-in, always keep in mind
that any value HR brings to the table should always have a tangible
benefit to the business. Keep in mind the perennial question lodged in
the back of your senior management’s minds: “What’s in it for us?”.
Whether it is a lower attrition rate, a higher employee engagement
rate or a higher level of customer service, always sell your proposals
and ideas as something which would help your company achieve its
organisational goals.
But becoming a strategic HR business partner is not something that
can be achieved overnight. Rather, it is a long and hard-won journey
in winning the support and validation of your company’s senior
management and employees alike.

With a background in credit risk and special asset
management, you will review policies and procedures,
and make key recommendations for improvements.
Your credit approval experience in corporate banking,
with a solid understanding of debt products, will allow
you to take ownership of the analysis and evaluation
of a diverse loan portfolio.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years
experience across loan condition sheets, impairment
allowance & loss calculation, reporting on recovery
and charge offs /discrepancy investigations, and
cash flow/liquidity calculation reporting. Excellent
communication skills will be vital in this role.
