Queen Anne High School continues to undergo changes. Across
the street from the school, the old
Queen Anne gym, built in 1961, was
sold last year to Lorig Associates to
be demolished and developed into
30 town homes. The 1.1-acre site
will include some school parking
space for teachers at the new John
Hay School, across the street on the
site of the old Luther Field. Lorig
did the conversion of West Queen
Anne School as well as QAHS.
Our old school, which closed in
1981, became apartments in 1986,
and was converted to 137 condominiums in 2006. The building is
still a handsome and commanding
structure and is on the National
Register of Historic Places as well
as a designated Seattle Landmark.
Today, 14 of the condo units are

If being a Queen Anne Grizzly means living the values of sportsmanship,
friendship, generosity and devotion, then Bruce Bowe ’62 had the loudest roar
of them all. Bruce passed away Oct. 20, 2008 at age 64. His family and his
many friends have chosen to honor his memory by establishing a Bruce Bowe
’62 Memorial Scholarship as part of the
Queen Anne High
School Alumni Association Scholarship
Program.

Elementary
and
Queen Anne High
School, graduating in
1962. He was an AllCity basketball player

Pacific University and
the University of Washington, Bruce joined the Navy, serving tours in Vietnam
aboard the USS Kearsarge. After returning, he completed his BA degree at the

From Our QAHSAA President
Well, it’s here! 2009, centennial year of the opening of Queen Anne High School, and the first
Seattle “world’s fair,” the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition. The latter is being taken care of by
local historical societies and historians. The former - it’s up to us to celebrate the existence of
Queen Anne High School. We are hoping to put on some kind of commemorative gathering in
Auguts at the picnic. Anyone who is interested in working on this project please contact me via email or snail mail at: QAHSAA, Box 9128, Seattle, WA 98109.
The recent snow reminded me of the Blizzard of 1950, which many of you who attended
school here during that winter will remember. The MOQA luncheon on Dec. 30 celebrated the
camaraderie of Grizzly men, with the added pleasure of the two gracious ladies who took orders
for the 2009 calendar, but also took time to celebrate the end of the snows of 2008! Sometime later this winter (or
early spring) I will be moving to Port Orchard, but will continue to work at the Downtown Library.
More champions at Queen Anne than many of you may have thought. Unbeaten streaks in sports other than
football and basketball graced our years at Queen Anne. We may have lost a number of games, but we won in most
sports more often than we lost. Some games will always stand out: in 1912 we beat Ballard in football 78-0, and in
1961 beat Rainier Beach 69-6. We had a few “bad” losses ourselves, losing to Broadway in 1916 by 75-0, for example.
That was our worst loss in first team football. The 1959 second basketball game against West Seattle brought us a 9065 win, with 50 of those points coming from Bob Hawkins, a record which would stand for more than 20 years. 72
years of history; 72 years of notable grads: captains of industry, writers, doctors, statesmen, sports stars, debate
champions, actors, singers, musicians, bankers, attorneys, parents, grandparents, and beyond. I doubt that there is any
area of achievement in which a Grizzly has not appeared, with the possible exception of space pioneer. We are
creative and caring, protective and gifted. We shall carry our achievements and records into the future, as well as a
fondness for the building on the Hilltop! Happy New Year, everyone!

1930s
Ann Stoneback sent us a copy of her
father’s obituary, per his instructions. Thomas Robert Faragher ’30, died at the age
of 96 in December in Arizona. He had a
successful career in banking with banks
from New York to Washington, including People’s, Bank of California, and the
National Bank of Commerce, which became Rainier Bank. He retired in 1977. He
was actively involved with United Way for
many years, and among other memberships he was a member of the International Monetary Conference. His career is
an example of a “Notable Queen Anne
Alum.”
Perhaps we are doing better than we think:
when the photo of Bertha (Hansen)
Davis ’32 appeared in the last issue, it drew
the attention of Sharyl Smith ’60, who,
along with Bertha, had taught at Webster
Elementary School in Ballard during the
1970s. We put them in touch with each
other, and received another note from
Sharyl telling of a pleasant phone call they
shared.
We received data regarding the death of
Joanne Rose Hoskin, a.k.a. Melba
Rose Barth ’33, from her son George.
She died last August in Sequim. Her son
notes that her brother Perry Barth ’43
and several cousins all graduated from
Queen Anne.
Bert Pound ’34 sends greetings and
thanks to all who prepare the KUAY and
put on the events during the year. He says
he stopped by the picnic at Gas Works
Park, “I enjoyed visiting with many grads,
but was disappointed that Jerry Munro
’34 was not there. He and I were friends
from Warren Avenue Grade School,
where we were the first street crossing
guards for the school, and were friends at
QA High. My favorite teacher was Nada
Overland – English. At Queen Anne I was
in band along with Ed Krenz ’34, and
after graduation we were in the UW
Husky Concert and Marching Bands. Ed
is no longer with us, but I fortunately am
still able to perform playing my snare
drum in the Husky Marching Alumni
Band.”
We just lost George Henry Bartell Jr.
’34, another of our notable grads. His firm
is the longest family-owned drugstore
chain in the nation.
1940s
Iras (Remington) Gabryelewicz ’40,
sends a note recalling a bicycling tour to
Whidbey Island, which she, along with
Marjorie Dennis, Teenie Prater, Edith
McDougall, Judy Smythe, Mar y
Randle, Dorothy Wilson, Roberta Wilson and Sally Sue Rogers, all ’40, took
in July of 1939. Iras writes: “Once upon a
time in an age long past we all planned on
hostelling in Europe the summer of 1940.
However, it never happened and somehow we all scattered and never got together again.”
Patrick O’Brien, son of a QA alum (name
not given), sent us the note that after his
father’s death he found a letter describing
the WWII death of Lt. Calvin Ide ’41.
This is apparently an account of the heroic death which was written by one of
Ide’s surviving crew members. We have
not seen a copy of the letter yet, but will
try to include it in the next issue of the
KUAY.
Glo (Gleason) Holcomb ’46, was the
recipient of a surprise birthday party on
Jan. 11 at the Blue Ridge Club House. She
had been told that it was to be a tea party
for the grandchildren; instead, family and
fellow alums showed up to surprise her.

Chuck Kahler ’70, writes of a connection with the late Eugene Morgan ’39,
who was a senior when Chuck’s uncle,
Charles Meredith Wilkins, a.k.a.
Meredith Kahler ’36, was killed in WW
II. Chuck, who is battalion chief for the
South King County Fire & Rescue in Federal Way, owns an old fire engine from
Seattle, which he was asked to bring to
Eugene’s memorial. Eugene was one of
the last survivors of the sinking of the
U.S.S. Indianapolis in July 1945. Thus, one
alum was honored by another who in
turn was named for a third alum.
John Marshall ’70, was given some yearbooks and other material from Dorothy
(Piksa) Davies ’30, when she was moving and wanted the items to go to a fellow Grizzly. She had seen an article about
John and his bookstore, Open Books: A
Poem Emporium, and read that John was
a grad.
In the last Who’s News, we included the
few details we had on a bicycle accident
involving a grad. We had the name of
Dal Marmion ’72, but it was his brotherin-law, Terry McMacken, Jr. ’75, who
was mortally injured in the accident. We
apologize for the confusion over the
names, and thank Dal for sending the correct information to us.

recent surgery for a recurring brain tumor.

Darcy Lynch ’81 writes that the Rhode
Island Monthly released its Best of Rhode Island list in the August 2008 issue. Under
the Health & Wellness category, Darcy is
listed for her massage therapy businesses
(for private clientele and for the performance industry, primarily rock bands).
She just received her first national tour to
accompany Metal Masters which features
Judas Priest as the headliner. When not
working, she enjoys sailing.

Reunion Recaps
Class of ’44 Met Early

The class of 1944, one of the smallest graduating classes from QAHS during the 1930s and 1940s, held its 65th reunion at the
Woodmark Hotel in Kirkland. The reunion was originally planned for sometime in 2009 but so few graduates were still around
that it was advanced to October 2008 and became a luncheon where most of the attendees were widows and widowers.
Gordy and Jan (Craigen) Sherwood and Peggy and Chad Manning were the only couples. Gudmeid Berge, Hugh Degler, Tom
Kirkman, Sheryl (Hays) Martinis, Billie (Bates) Palmer, Pauline (Hall) Roberts, Virginia (Gray) Stevens, Paul Stoms, Bev (Overton)
Taylor, and Jim Weiss attended. Sixty-five years is a long time. World War II and the Korean War took a toll on this class.
Class of ’48 Held Mellow 60th Reunion

The Queen Anne Class of ’48 enjoyed its Sixtieth Reunion at the Seattle Yacht Club on Sunday, September 21st. Response to our
invitation was overwhelming. With a limit of 120 attendees we unfortunately had to turn some away. It was terrific event, MC’d by
the inimitable Bill Knight ’48, retired Sports Editor of the Seattle Post Intelligencer, who as many of you may recall was also the
Sports Editor of the Kuay. Dottie Mace, our class songstress, led the reunion in an enthusiastic rendition of the Queen Anne Fight
Song. Continuing a special feature of the Class of ’48 reunions, each class member was called upon to say a few words to their
classmates about their lives during and since Queen Anne. Needless to say it was a wonderful opportunity to share me.mories and
catch up on our classmates’ experiences over the past six decades.
Class of ’58 was Golden
A gaggle, and then some, of the Queen Anne Class of ’58 at its
50th reunion weekend. The empty shoes, contributed by Jim
Padden, represent deceased clasmates, in attendance in spirit.

The Class of 1958 aggressively cast its net two years
ago to locate two-thirds of its 380 mates in preparation for the Golden Reunion Sept. 23, 2008 at the
Seattle Golf and Country Club. We now have 275
contacts, 45 deceased, and list about 60 missing. The
glue’s still active! We reveled at the “Grad’s-Only
Night” at Paul and Glenda Barrett’s on the South Hill,
danced until midnight the next night at the formal
dinner, honored our remaining teachers, sent cards
and “Golden Grizzly” memory books to the
homebound who couldn’t make it, and fed Tent City
from the remains of one party! Off-shoot groups
have begun meeting regularly, one a dinner club, another “girls’ club” quarterly lunch, and a tour of the
Napa Valley is planned by yet another.

’63 Holds Their 45th

The class of ’63 held its 45th reunion in August at the Yarrowood
Complex Recreation Center in Bellevue, sponsored by Mary (Larson)
Germeau ’63. About 115 classmates and guests enjoyed a casual gathering in this roomy center and the outdoor patio space. We started early
with snacks and drinks enjoying the wonderful weather and good conversation. A catered buffet was served later in the evening. We all enjoyed the good weather, food and friends. The reunion continued at the
Alumni All-Class Picnic the next day with about 30 class of ’63 attending. It poured rain but no one seemed to care. We all had a great time.

MOQA News & Events
More than 80 Grads Attended the 35th MOQA Christmas Luncheon

The Men Of Queen Anne had another fine turnout of alums at the annual luncheon at Rock Salt Steak House Dec.
30. Some 80 lads from various decades showed up. Acknowledgment was given to the deaths of Add Sewell, the
head of Young Life who had provided our invocation at the luncheon for many years, and the recent loss of Bruce
Bowe ’62, in whose honor a named scholarship is being created. Bruce was given the Edo Vanni Spirit Award posthumously, and the award was accepted by Bruce’s sons, Jeff and Jim Bowe.
The Class of ’59 golf squad from last summer’s Bob Houbregs Golf Tournament were gently razzed for its scores.
This year’s luncheon had more attendees from the late 1940s and 1950s than other decades, but they will all assure
you that the lasagna was excellent and the door prizes were delightful. As a late arrival, I got to sit at the table with the
kids from 1948 and 1949, and truly, a good time was had by all!
QA Championship Football Reunion

Players, family, and friends from the QAHS Championship team of the 1953 season held a team reunion this
past fall. The players spent time over lunch reminiscing
over Howe Field, jarring tackles, touchdowns, and remembering who to block on play T-74 Right.
After the luncheon at the RockSalt, many returned to
Seattle Memorial Stadium to watch a high school football game. In their heyday, the field was sand - not the
turf that is used today! The talk was of mud cleats, no
facemask helmets, the loyal Grizzly fans who packed the
stadium, and especially when the team lost in the Turkey
Day game against Olympia. Although some teammates

Bob Houbregs Golf Tournament Recap

Eighty golfers took to the fairways Sept. 29 to play in the Bob
Houbregs Queen Anne Golf Classic at the Everett Golf and County
Club. Beside renewing old friendships, meeting new players, and having lots of fun, the purpose was to raise scholarship money. Guys
and gals from different classes enjoyed the good weather and the
easy flow of playing golf on a very prestigious course, which is over
100 years old. Mark your calendar for Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, and
join other Grizzlies for the next tournament. Our welcome mat is
out for all golfers, regardless of skill, to come and enjoy the day. The
day is capped by an evening banquet open to anyone who wants to

Bruce was a good friend
to many Grizzlies and had
the ability to light up a room
with his presence and personality. He was one of the mainstays of the Men Of Queen Bruce Bowe ’62
Anne (MOQA), an important
part of our alumni family. He
helped found and develop the MOQA golf tournament, now named the Bob Houbregs Queen Anne
Golf Classic.
Following his death, his family and friends gathered to announce the new Bruce Bowe ’62 Memorial

2008 Annual QAHSAA Picnic Recap

The 2008 annual picnic held at Gas Works last August
was a fun affair. The picnic committee spent the better part
of the morning cleaning the area, setting up the tables, starting the charcoal grills and putting Al’s Hamburger Grill into
readiness for the hungry Grizzlies who began to arrive around
11 a.m. The area we were given was the northeast quadrant with much of the space under the shelter of the gas
works structure. This meant that, when it rained later in the
day, we were able to continue conversations and eating, with
just a few umbrellas needed to cover the grills and those who
worked them.

Unexpected, but delightful guests included Al’s daughter
and great-granddaughter. The rains did not dampen the spirits of members of the Class of ’63, who continued their 55th
reunion at the picnic. Many hands made the work light and
quickly finished. So many people to thank for making it another great success, I cannot begin to name them all, but
thanks to Jim for providing radio music, and to Ronnie for
his assistance all day long!
