Dear Member, In an effort to continue upgrading your membership experience, the Club has created decals (enclosed) for your automobile that will identify you as a member of Bayview Yacht Club. These decals are static-cling rather than sticky to avoid tedious installation and peel off. The decals are numbered, which will help staff members quickly identify the owners of the vehicle in a time of need. The numbers are random and do not correspond with account numbers. Each member is provided with two decals automatically on an annual basis. If you require more than two, please contact Colleen Hathaway in the Accounting Office at [email protected] and she will be happy to print additional decals. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected] or call me at (313) 822-1853. Sincerely, Aaron K. Wagner General Manager 100 Clairpointe St., Detroit, Michigan 48215 Telephone 313-822-1853 www.byc.com You are invited to become a Friend of the 2016 Detroit Cup One of four events on the 2016 US Grand Slam match racing series, the Detroit Cup has in the past few years increased its global reach, attracting top-ranked teams from Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, Ireland, Denmark, France, Switzerland, Finland, and the US Virgin Islands, as well as throughout the US and Canada. The excellence of race management, venue, hospitality and points offered on the International Sailing Federation’s Match Race Ranking List have all contributed to the popularity and competitiveness of this high-level sailing event. The series winner receives an invitation to the 2017 Congressional Cup, held in Long Beach, CA. This year marks the 9th year that this highly regarded match race has been held at Bayview Yacht Club. Last year the ISAF sanctioned World Match Racing Tour (WMRT) added the Detroit Cup to its World Tour events. The Detroit Cup is one of only five WMRT events conducted in the U.S. Finally the US Grand Slam Series Champion will be crowned at the Detroit Cup in Bayview Yacht Club’s fleet of Ultimate 20’s. The Detroit Cup depends on the support of its sponsors and Friends. Show your support for this year’s race, which will be held August 25-28, with a donation of $100. For your donation you will receive one 2016 Detroit Cup cap, which is exclusive to Friends and will not be for sale, and recognition as an official “Friend” on the Detroit Cup website, Facebook page and in the event program. What happened to spring?!” This year is truly flying by for me. There has been a lot happening at the Club over the last month. It has been hopping! June started out strong with the Bayview One Design Regatta. The weather was great, and we got in a lot of racing. Thank you to Cindy Ross for being our Regatta Chair for this event. Everything went great, mostly because she assembled a great team to make it all happen. The Club owes all of the BOD volunteers – as well as our staff -- a lot of praise for making it such a premier event. On June 7th, we hosted our annual Press Conference for the Bell’s Beer Bayview to Mackinac Race. It was the biggest turnout that I have seen in years. Big props to all those involved in making it happen. The highlight of the day for me was getting my picture taken with Ken Kal, Rick Mahorn, Jim Brandstatter and Willy Horton. What a thrill! It is great to have them come down to our Club to be a part of the Sports Team Challenge. On June 19th, we had our Father’s Day Brunch and Fleet Review. Our Fleet Captain Chuck Bayer Jr. did a great job getting members out on their boats, and there were close to 50 boats participating. That is a huge increase over the past few years. We also had a water display by the Detroit Fire Boat that was set up by Randy Semmler. Pretty cool! Victoria Armenio, daughter of Rear Commodore Brad Kimmel, did a beautiful job singing our National Anthem. Monsignor Halfpenny Blessed our Fleet. Kyle and Tom Burleson passed out the participation packages, and Com. Greg Thomas did some colorful commentary as the boats paraded around the river. Thank you to all of you for making it such a great day. Finally, I want to thank Lance and Trish Smotherman for allowing us to use their Santa Cruz 70 Details for the Board of Governors viewing platform. Having been involved with the boat since they purchased it, it meant a lot to me to use it. Our Board appreciates it too because it would have been pretty crowded for all of us on my Cal 25! Well, that’s all I have for this month. Time to start preparing for Mackinac Month! I look forward to seeing you all down at the View and on the Island! The weather has been fantastic for our major events including the BOD and Summer Party and it seems to be here to stay. The Patio flowers are in full bloom (thank you Governor Gordon and Donna Smith) and I would like to invite all members to stop by and enjoy lunch or dinner with the sights and sounds of the River. Make sure to try the Chef’s new Signature Clubhouse Burger. Word on the street is it is the “best burger in town”! Check your calendar for the Music and a View Series as well. I am looking forward to seeing all of you up on Mackinac Island in the coming weeks. Good luck to all competitors. We wish you a safe and fun journey. Smooth Sailing, Aaron Wagner General Manager Mackinac Race Authority Fellow Members, The past few months have been very busy for the Mackinac Race Authority (MRA). As you know, the Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race is just about upon us. I wanted you to know that the MRA along with Race Chairman Kyle Burleson, Administrator Melissa Wenzler and the entire race committee are nearly ready to have another fantastic race and event. We on the MRA are committed to providing a safe, fair, and fun race for every participant and their families. This year’s changes in rating system for the Cove Island Course has been well received. We’ve had some challenges in getting the ORR ratings out, but we are assured that every boat will have their ratings very soon. We are operating within our budget and face some financial challenges that we are not going to let get in the way of us putting on the best race and event. The class splits are being developed and our goal is to have fair and competitive classes. It isn’t easy to take 230 boats, most unlike each other and group them for competitive classes. Important Dates to Remember Bell’s Beer Bayview Yacht Club Mackinac Race July 16, 2016 Rating/Handicap Deadline June 15, 2016 Race Committee Appreciation Party, Bayview Yacht Club June 26, 2016 - 6pm Registration at BYC July 13, 2016 - 12-7:00pm Registration at Port Huron July 15, 2015 - 9am-4pm Awards Party at Woodfill Park, Mackinac Island July 19, 2016 - 12-3pm Awards Dinner, The Roostertail October 22, 2016 Bob Declercq’s two-year term on the MRA expires on July 31st. We are grateful for Bob’s contributions and service on the MRA in support of our Bayview Mackinac Race. I am pleased to announce that our esteemed member and America’s Cup veteran, Stu Argo has accepted an appointment by the MRA Board to fill the vacancy. We are looking forward to Stu joining us as he will bring a great amount of experience and technical assistance in assuring that we continue developing our race to fit the new advances in racing sailboats. This year our awards dinner will be held at the Roostertail on October 22. We feel that this will be a much more enjoyable event. More to come about the dinner next month. We want to thank all the members at Bayview for supporting the MRA. We know it is difficult in making everyone happy, but we will continue to try. Let’s remember, the winners like their ratings, the class splits, and the race course…the losers, maybe not so much. So, we’ll see some of you in Port Huron and on Mackinac Island and some we’ll see around the club. Safe sailing for all, Tommy Meier From the Treasurer: BYC MON THLY N ET I N COME By: Sammy Barbour Through April 2016, the club’s finances are in good shape. While the results in February and March fell behind prior years, I believe much of the difference is timing, and the improvement in April compared to the previous months as well as prior years supports that. In particular, food costs have trended down toward our target percentage recently. This has been a key issue and I look forward to Chef Jared and his staff continuing to focus on improvement in the area. The Operating Fund is actually generally ahead of the past couple of years, no doubt due to the efforts of Aaron and his staff keeping a close watch on spending through the first six months of our fiscal year. As you might expect, a yacht club generates most of its income during the summer, and Bayview is no different. The last quarter of our fiscal year will determine the final result for the year, and it is dependent on positive results from all the different club activities during the summer. The best way you can help is to use your club. Enjoy the new menu, the bar, and host your next event at the club. More revenue helps our bottom line, and more action at the club makes it more fun for all of us. If you are a volunteer, thank you for your service, as well as your patience and understanding as we institute the purchasing system. Please continue to serve the club with enthusiasm and passion as always, as you really do make a difference.
