Take measures now to insulate your business
from rises in energy costs
As a small business owner, you meticulously budget for overhead expenses each year, including utility expenses. It can be difficult to
budget and anticipate these costs with the fluctuations and increases in gas and electric rates.
As days have become shorter and your morning commutes colder, you may have noticed your natural gas costs rise. That is because during
the cold season, natural gas prices rise to their highest point for the year.
You may find your natural gas bills are costly now, but prices are slated to increase at over 12% this winter. So what does that mean for
you? Increasing rates will impact your bottom line, but there are several measures you can take to insulate against rising utility costs.
• Lock-in a low natural gas rate. In Ohio, you have the right to shop for the best market rate. If you have never done this, you are
likely paying a higher rate than you need to, and could be saving as much as 15% on your monthly bills.

Solomon”, or, “ someone might
quote a passage from a book
in the Bible, such as Proverbs
27:17 “As Iron Sharpens Iron, so

The principle behind this wise
saying is this. There is mutual
benefit in the rubbing of two
iron blades together; the edges
become sharper, making the
knives more efficient in their
task to cut and slice. Left on
their own, over time, they get
dull and less efficient.
Likewise, there is mutual benefit in two lives, organizations,
companies, coming together to
share knowledge, expertise, and
energy in order to become more
efficient. Why else would we
hire mentors and coaches in our
businesses if we already had all

taking a step back
into time, an old
neighborhood that is
warm and welcoming.
Much different than most assisted living and memory care units, Svayus is a 38,700-square-foot Alzheimer’s and dementia care
unit that is more than just a program — it is a lifestyle.
Along with a regular routine, proper nutrition, and an environment that stimulates all five senses, the Svayus unit takes clients to

The Painesville Area and the Madison/Perry Area Chambers of
Commerce are bringing Maia Beatty back to Lake County for
a ½ day seminar on March 20, 2014. Details will be in our next

County area, Lake Kidz Biz is perfect for you. Entering its fourth
year, this local organization brings together a variety of companies focused on children’s products and services. Members, who
are kid-oriented businesses, join together monthly in the spirit of

promotion and marketing efforts.
Meetings are held from 8:15am-9:30am on the first Wednesday
of the month, with the exception of skipping July. The meeting
location varies from month to month offering the opportunity to
showcase businesses across Lake County. Meetings are structured
networking opportunities and informative speakers with the primary goal of increasing your business. Lake Kidz Biz serves as an
organization under the Lake County Chambers of Commerce which
is comprised of the Madison/Perry Chamber, Mentor Area Chamber,

THE Y IS FOR…
When most of us think of the
Y, we think of things like swimming, fitness, and child care,
but the Y is so much more. Did
you know that the first-ever
English as a Second Language
class was held at a YMCA in
Cincinnati to help integrate
the thousands of German immigrants? Have you ever heard
about the YMCA in Belfast that
served as a safe-haven for children of both IRA and protestant
families? For 148 years the Lake
County YMCA has strengthened
the foundation of our community with programs that meet
our community’s ever-changing
needs. Those needs led to the
development of such programs
as child care, exercise classes,
swimming classes, and many
of the programs that we are familiar with. As changing demographics, the diabetes epidemic,
and a widening gap between
middle and lower class students
have changed our community,
the Y has changed to meet our
needs. The future of the YMCA
movement has caused the Y to
shift its focus to Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social
Responsibility.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
The issue: The achievement gap
between privileged students and
students from low-income families is constantly discussed, studied, and analyzed by educators all
over the country. The consensus
is that students from low-income
families learn at the same rate as
privileged students in the classroom, but fall behind during the
summer and after-school hours.
The Y’s Response: The Summer Learning Loss Prevention
Program piloted in the summer
of 2013 at Chestnut Elementary.
The program provided literacy
education and enrichment opportunities to students who
were identified as being at-risk
of falling behind. Instead of falling behind their peers, students
in the program ended the summer with test scores indicating a
slight advantage.
HEALTHY LIVING
The issue: Type 2 Diabetes is an
epidemic affecting ten percent
of everyone in both Lake County
and the rest of the United States.
The Y’s Response: The Y’s
Diabetes Prevention Program is
an innovative, collaborative approach to engage with pre-diabetics to make lifestyle changes
impacting diet and exercise. The
program is being piloted all over
the country including Cleveland,
Toledo, Columbus, and Cincinnati,
and has yielded amazing results.
The Lake County Y is scheduled to
kick off the program by 2015.

because of societal changes including generational differences,

$100K Grant from the Cleveland
Foundation’s Lake-Geauga Fund
Elevates Plan for Lake Metroparks Observation Tower
Lake Metroparks has been
awarded a $100,000 grant from
the Cleveland Foundation for
the construction of an impressive observation tower at the
agency’s newest park – Lake
Erie Bluffs in Perry Township.
The new park provides visitors with access to almost two
miles of undeveloped Lake Erie
through two access points off of
Lane Road and Clark Road.
“Thanks to the generosity of
the Cleveland Foundation, the
addition of this 50-foot coastal
observation tower will serve
as a cornerstone of this amaz-
ing 600-acre Lake Erie Bluffs
Park,” said Paul Palagyi, executive director of Lake Metroparks.
“This tower will give visitors
an impressive panoramic view
of Lake Erie, the shoreline and
the landscape of central Lake
County.”
The 50-foot observation tower
will be situated overlooking the
lakeshore with multiple viewing platforms along a staircase
that will culminate in a deck
featuring 360-degree views.
The height and location of the
tower will provide visitors with
a unique view of the lake and
the surrounding woods, fields
and wetlands along with the associated wide-range of wildlife
– particularly the large number
of bald eagles that are regularly
safety concerns, and lack of opportunities.
The Y’s Response: The Y’s
Member-Led Community Service
Program is an exciting way to
create volunteer opportunities
in the community for those who
want to give back. Volunteers
receive the mental, physical, and
spiritual benefits of volunteerism,
and the community is strengthened through their service. The
Lake County Y is currently searching for churches, schools, municipalities, and organizations to
partner with who are in need of
volunteers.
As we face the many challenges
that face our community, we
know the Y is a powerful resource
that can be counted on to meet
our needs. Whether our needs
are physical, emotional, or spiritual we can rest assured that the
Y will be there to strengthen the
foundation of our community.

Construction of the observation
tower is scheduled to begin next
spring. Total cost of the project
is estimated to be approximately $200,000 to $250,000.
