Mission Statement
It is the purpose of the Calgary APTA Festival to bring together
piano enthusiasts of all levels and in all styles of playing to share
and enjoy music. It is for this reason that classes are noncompetitive.
It is the commitment of this festival that each performer will
receive an adjudication by a leading clinician in piano music to
aid them in moving forward in their learning experience.
It is the hope of this festival that students, teachers and music
lovers enrich their musical skills and knowledge each time they
participate.

Classes will be held all day except as shown.
May 2, May 3, May 4 (morning only), May 7, and May 9.
The Showcase Concert will be May 14.
The continued goal of the festival is to provide an opportunity for
students to play in a performance atmosphere that is encouraging
and constructive. All participants will receive a certificate and a
written adjudication.

About Our Adjudicators
Dr. Bianca Baciu
Dr. Bianca Baciu has led an active career as soloist, chamber musician and pedagogue. She has
performed throughout Europe and North America and has collaborated with distinguished artists such as
Serban Lupu, Vagram Saradjian and Tanya Prochazka. After establishing her early career in Europe, at
age 24, Dr. Baciu moved to Canada, where she has received numerous awards including the Marusia
Yaworska Scholarship for the most talented musician in Canada, and the prestigious Izaak Walton Killam
PhD Scholarship for research at the University of Alberta. Her performances have been generously
supported by organizations such as the Auslandgesselschaft Nordrhein-Westfalen in Germany, the Banff
Centre for the Arts, the Winspear Fund in Edmonton and the Mannes School of Music in New York.
Dr. Baciu received her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance (2000) and a Diploma in
Advanced Pedagogy (1999) from Transylvania University in Romania. She earned her Master’s in Piano
Performance from the University of Western Ontario (2002), and her Doctorate in Piano Performance
from the University of Alberta (2006) in Canada, and has worked under the guidance of pianists such as
Radu Lupu, Angela Cheng, Nelita True, Jane Coop, Evgeni Moguilevsky, Jacques Despres and Victor
Rosenbaum.
Dr. Baciu’s live performances have been broadcast on CBC Radio 2 and CKUA (Canada), WDR
(Koln, Germany), and Radio Romania Tineret (Romania). In 1998, she recorded her first CD featuring
works by Beethoven, Brahms and Ravel, released under the patronage of the Auslandgesselschaft
Nordrhein-Westfalen and The Romanian Embassy in Bonn, Germany. After moving to Canada in 2000,
she completed a series of recording projects featuring solo and chamber music works by Canadian
composers, and in 2006 she participated in a music residency program at the Banff Centre for the Arts,
where she recorded a world premiere CD featuring piano solo works by Canadian composer Jack
Behrens. Her CD presenting Behrens’s Homages for piano solo was released by Centaur Records in 2008.
Dr. Baciu’s book “Death of the Author – A Tribute,” discussing postmodernism in Jack Behrens’s piano
music was also released in 2008 by VDM Publishing in Germany.
Dr. Baciu has served on the ARMTA Edmonton Executive as the Artistic Director of the Northern
Alberta Concerto Competition and currently, as the Young Artist liaison. She has offered numerous
traveling workshops for ARMTA and APTA. In addition to her administrative and performance
engagements, Dr. Baciu is a dedicated teacher and a sought-after clinician and adjudicator. She has taught
at Transylvania University in Romania, the University of Western Ontario in London and the University
of Alberta in Edmonton. She currently teaches piano and piano literature at Alberta College, Grant
MacEwan University, and also maintains a full private teaching studio in Edmonton. Her students have
been CMC finalists and have received numerous awards and scholarships from the University of Western
Ontario, Victoria School for the Arts in Edmonton, Edmonton Community Foundation, Conservatory
Canada, ARMTA, APTA, Alberta College, CMC, the Kiwanis Festival and the Fall Festival in Edmonton.

Michelle Grégoire
Pianist and composer Michelle Grégoire’s music has been described as “ingenious”, “elegant”,
“balanced”, and “original with great depth and imagination”. She has toured across Canada with her jazz
quintet and her music is heard regularly on XM Radio and Galaxie satellite jazz programs. An active
freelance musician since 1984, Michelle Grégoire maintains a solid reputation as a sideperson and band
leader having backed up artists in all genres. She has worked regularly in the pit orchestras of local
theatre companies like Theatre Calgary, StageWest and Winnipeg’s Rainbow Stage. Grégoire holds two
jazz degrees from St. Francis Xavier University (1988, 1990), a Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies
from the Florida State University (1993) and has attended the Hugh Fraser Jazz Orchestra Residency in
Banff where she worked with Maria Schneider in 2002 and Kenny Wheeler in 2004. Ms. Grégoire has
also studied privately with world-renowned composer Bob Brookmeyer. Since the Fall 2014, she has been
on faculty at Ambrose University in Calgary teaching Jazz Piano.
Esther Bing
Esther Bing is a Branch Piano Instructor for the Conservatory at Mount Royal University
(Calgary), and has been teaching piano since she was 14 yrs old. She received a Bachelor Degree in Piano
Performance from the University of British Columbia (Henri-Paul Sicsic and Jane Coop), and a Master
Degree in Piano Performance from The Boston Conservatory (Michael Lewin).
Major accomplishments include: a full scholarship to The Boston Conservatory (TBC) from
winning their Open Scholarship Competition; Winner, TBC’s Piano Honours Competition; Runner-up and
Finalist at the UBC Concerto Competition and Richmond Gateway Competition, respectfully; Silver
medal at the Regina Conservatory of Music; and First Prize in the Regina Kiwanis Festival’s Open
Scholarship Competition.
In Calgary, Ms. Bing has performed with Soprano Stephania Romaniuk, most notably in a
preconcert program at the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. She has recorded with Chris Sales (Principal
Bassoon, CPO), and performed with CPO musicians at the Columbia Valley Chamber Music Festival. She
was also the Orchestra Pianist for both The Boston Conservatory and UBC orchestras.
Jazz music has always been a passion. Ms. Bing recently completed a Gary Burton on-line course
in Jazz Improvisation through Berklee College of Music. Her jazz piano teacher in Calgary has been
Derek Stoll. She’s performed her own compositions, Bad Cat and Crazy Cat, for the Alberta Registered
Music Teacher’s Calgary Arts Summer School’s 20th Anniversary celebration, and for a CASS fundraiser.
Ms. Bing is currently in her 2nd year as President of the Piano Diploma Association (Calgary),
after serving six years as Vice President. She is an Instructor for the Calgary Arts Summer School Piano
Association Camps, and is currently an Apprentice with RCM College of Examiners. She has also
become a regular adjudicator for music festivals in Alberta over the past few years. When studying in
Boston, she was the Assistant Coordinator for The Boston Conservatory Summer Piano Workshop and
served on the Student Government Association.
Ms. Bing is fluent in French, likes reading books, enjoys running, and cooking vegetarian foods.
She and her husband, Matt, live with a large, white, dog-like cat, named Ziggy.

Edwin Gnandt
Canadian pianist Edwin Gnandt enjoys a successful career with over five hundred appearances as
soloist, accompanist, adjudicator, and workshop clinician. He has been praised by the San Francisco
Examiner for his “consistently alluring sound,” by the Oakland Tribune for his “ear for phrasing,” and by
the Los Angeles Times for his “distinct refinement.” Mr. Gnandt’s performances have taken him
throughout Canada and the United States as well as to Russia and Scotland. Recently, he was invited as a
visiting Professor of Music at Azusa Pacific University in Los Angeles, California. He is a piano
instructor for the Mt. Royal University Conservatory Calgary Piano Institute and has participated as a
guest lecturer at the Point Loma Summer Keyboard Institute in San Diego and has been a regular
contributor to the Calgary Arts Summer School Association (CASSA). His book “The Soul of the Music:
Gifts from the Golden Age of Piano” (2014) received excellent reviews.
Mr. Gnandt presents regularly at international conferences including the annual Hawaii
International Conference on Arts and Humanities, the International Journal of Arts and Sciences
Conference in Barcelona, Spain. Upcoming presentations are scheduled for the International
IJAS conference at the Ca Foscari University of Venice, Italy.
Mr. Gnandt has studied at a number of prestigious institutions, including the University of
Washington (Randolph Hokanson), University of Edinburgh, Scotland (Canada Council Grant),
and the Juilliard School of Music (Adele Marcus). He has collaborated and recorded with various
artists of national and international stature. His piano students have participated in national and
international piano competitions and have gone on to graduate studies at recognized institutions
in Canada and the USA. He is listed in the Lexington’s Who’s Who of Professionals in North
America. Mr. Gnandt has served as faculty member at Ambrose University since 1995.
